  • Rendering maps from raw SVG data in Java

    - by Lunikon
In an application of mine I have to display locations and great circle paths in a map which is rendered to PNG and then displayed on the web. For this I simply use a world map (NASA's Blue Marbel in fact) scaled to various "zoom levels" as base image and only display the a part of it matching the final image size and fitting all items to be displayed. Straight forward so far. Now I came across Wikipedia's awesome blank SVG maps which contain all the country codes for easy reference and I was wondering whether it was possible to use those to have more customized colors and to highliht countries etc. So I did a bit of googling and was looking for Java libraries which would enable me to load the blank SVG map to memory allows for easy reference/selection of certain paths do manipulations of coloring, stroke widths etc render to a buffered image as the background for the great-circle paths/nodes What I came across quite often was Batik, but it looks like a really heavy framework and I'm not quite sure whether it is what I'm looking for. I have recently played around with Raphaël a bit and I like the way it handles working with vector graphics in code. If the Java framework for my purpose would feature a similar interface, that would be a nice-to-have. Any recommendations what toolset would be approriate for my purposes?

  • Dynamically Rendering in a Scrollable Area

    - by James
What is the generic algorithm or process that is commonly used to dynamically render portions of a scrolling area? For example, in Google Maps, when the user scrolls past the bounds of the currently rendered area, a grey checkerboard pattern is displayed within the not-yet-rendered portions while the application loads and renders those areas. I'm looking specifically for the approach, or the mathematics, related to filling a graphics area in chunks based on what has just come into view. If possible, I'm looking for anything relevant to the GDI+ process of doing so.

  • "Zoom" text to be as big as possible within constraints/box

    - by stolsvik
First problem: You have 400 pixels width to go on, and need to fit some text within that constraint as large as possible (thus, the text shall use that amount of space). Throw in a new constraint: If the text is just "A", then it shall not zoom this above 100 pixels (or some specific font size). Then, a final situation: Linebreaks. Fit some text in the largest possible way within e.g. 400 x 150 pixels. An obvious way is to simply start with point 1, and then increase until you can't fit it anymore. This would work for all three problems, but would be very crude. The fitting of a single line within bounds could be done by writing it with some fixed point size, check the resulting pixel bounds of the text, and then simply scale it with a transform (the text scales properly too then, check out TransformUI). Any ideas of other ways to attack this would be greatly appreciated!

  • What is the point of heightmaps?

    - by Jake Petroules
I've been pondering this question awhile now... many 3d engines support advanced terrain rendering using quadtrees, LOD... all the features you expect. But every engine I've seen loads height data from heightmaps... grayscale bitmaps. I just can't understand how this is useful - each point in a heightmap can have one of 256 values. But what if you wanted to model Mt. Everest? with detail of 1 meter, or even greater? That's far outside the range of 256. Of course I understand that you can implement your own terrain format to achieve this, but I just can't see why heightmaps are so widely used despite their great limitations.

  • Possible iphone animation timing/rendering bug?

    - by David
Hi all, I have been working on an iphone apps for several weeks. Now I encounter an animation problem that I can't figure out how to resolve. Mayhbe you can help. Here is the details (a little long, bear with me): Basically the effect I want to achieve is, when user click a button, a loading view pops up, hiding the whole screen; and then the apps does a lot of heavy computation, which takes a few seconds. Once the computation is done, soem result views (something likes checkers on a checker board) are rendered under the loading view. Once all result views are rendered, I used animation animation to remove the loading view nand show the result views to the user. Here is what I do: when user click a button, run this code: [UIView beginAnimations:nil context:nil]; [UIView setAnimationDuration:1.0]; [UIView setAnimationBeginsFromCurrentState:YES]; [UIView setAnimationTransition:UIViewAnimationTransitionCurlDown forView:self.view cache:YES]; [UIView setAnimationDelegate:self]; [UIView setAnimationDidStopSelector:@selector(loadingViewInserted:finished:context:)]; // use a really high index number so it will always on top [self.view insertSubview:loadingViewController.view atIndex:1000]; [UIView commitAnimations]; In the "loadingViewInserted" function, it calls another function doing the heavy computation work. Once the computation is done, a lot of result views (like checkers on a checker board) are rendered under the loading view. for(int colIndex = 1; colIndex <= result.columns; colIndex++) { for(int rowIndex = 1; rowIndex <= result.rows; rowIndex++) { ResultView *rv = [ResultView resultViewWithData:results[colIndex][rowIndex]]; [self.view addSubview:rv]; } } Once all result views are added, following animation is invoked to remove the loading view: [UIView beginAnimations:nil context:nil]; [UIView setAnimationDuration:1.0]; [UIView setAnimationBeginsFromCurrentState:YES]; [UIView setAnimationTransition:UIViewAnimationTransitionCurlUp forView:self.view cache:YES]; [loadingViewController.view removeFromSuperview]; [UIView commitAnimations]; By doing this, most of the time (maybe 90%) it does exactly what I want. However, sometime I see some weird result: the loading view shows up first as expected, then before it disappears, some result views, which suppose to be under the loading view, suddenly appears on top of the loading view; and some of them are partial rendered. And then the loading view curled up, and everything looks normal again. The weird situation only lasts for less than a second, but already bad enough to screw up the UI. I have tried all different kinds of thing to fix this (using another thread to remove the loading view, make the loading view non-transparent), but none of them works. The only thing that makes a little better is, I hide all the result views first; after the last animation finished, in its call back, unhide all result views. But this loses the nice effect that when curling up the loading view, the results are already there. At this point, I really think this is a bug in iphone (I compile it with OS 3.0) OS. Or maybe you can point out what I have done wrong (or could do differently). (thanks for finishing this long post, :-) )

  • Rendering a CGPDFPage into a UIImage

    - by James Antrobus
I'm trying to render a CGPDFPage (selected from a CGPDFDocument) into a UIImage to display on a view. I have the following code in MonoTouch which gets me part way there. RectangleF PDFRectangle = new RectangleF(0, 0, UIScreen.MainScreen.Bounds.Width, UIScreen.MainScreen.Bounds.Height); public override void ViewDidLoad () { UIGraphics.BeginImageContext(new SizeF(PDFRectangle.Width, PDFRectangle.Height)); CGContext context = UIGraphics.GetCurrentContext(); context.SaveState(); CGPDFDocument pdfDoc = CGPDFDocument.FromFile("test.pdf"); CGPDFPage pdfPage = pdfDoc.GetPage(1); context.DrawPDFPage(pdfPage); UIImage testImage = UIGraphics.GetImageFromCurrentImageContext(); pdfDoc.Dispose(); context.RestoreState(); UIImageView imageView = new UIImageView(testImage); UIGraphics.EndImageContext(); View.AddSubview(imageView); } A section of the CGPDFPage is displayed but rotated back-to-front and upside down. My question is, how do I select the full pdf page and flip it round to display correctly. I have seen a few examples using ScaleCTM and TranslateCTM but couldn't seem to get them working. Any examples in ObjectiveC are fine, I'll take all the help I can get :) Thanks

  • Drupal rendering incomplete views

    - by Paul
I got tapped to do some quick maintenance on a recently migrated Drupal site. I'm pretty new to Drupal, so hopefully the problem is something that more experienced guys will figure out quick. Behavior is as follows. The public content works fine as far as I can tell. When I go to login, the login form renders correctly, but when I post the form w/ my credentials, I get back a blank page (not a 404; looks like a 200 to the /user URL, but all the gets rendered is empty Head and body tags). If i refresh the page, I get the content of my profile view, but none of the site chrome or CSS. Note that this is not an issue on the site it was migrated from, so it seems like something wasn't copied over correctly. The site's not public, so I can't provide a URL, sorry!

  • Page not rendering until BackgroundWorker.RunWorkerAsync completes

    - by brainimus
    I have an aspx page that on a button click creates a BackgroundWorker and then calls the RunWorkerAsync method. In my aspx file I have set Async='true' but when I run the application and click the button it appears as though the page waits to refresh until the processing of the BackgroundWorker is done. How do I get control to return to the page (and have the page refresh) after the BackgroundWorker is created and started? BackgroundWorker worker = new BackgroundWorker(); worker.DoWork += RunJob; worker.RunWorkerCompleted += JobCompleted; worker.RunWorkerAsync();

  • Search Engine Placement - How Anchor Text Can Improve Yours

For somewhat obvious reasons, Google and the other search engines like to keep the true nature of how exactly they rank web pages in search results a secret; letting their closely guarded secrets out would lead to search results being so manipulated by companies wishing to rank highly as to render most results irrelevant. So, not everything that goes on behind Google's curtain is fully understood, and that isn't necessarily a bad thing, but fortunately there is enough knowledge available to help give sites a gentle leg-up advantage over the competition who maybe care a little less about their ranking.

  • ASP.NET: Page HTML head rendering

    - by Fabian
I've been trying to figure out the best way to custom render the <head> element of a pag to get rid of the extra line breaks which is caused by <head runat="server">, so its properly formatted. So far the only thing i've found which works is the following: protected override void Render(HtmlTextWriter writer) { StringWriter stringWriter = new StringWriter(); HtmlTextWriter htmlTextWriter = new HtmlTextWriter(stringWriter); base.Render(htmlTextWriter); htmlTextWriter.Close(); string html = stringWriter.ToString(); string newHTML = html.Replace("\r\n\r\n<!DOCTYPE", "<!DOCTYPE") .Replace("\r\n<html", "<html") .Replace("<title>\r\n\t", "<title>") .Replace("\r\n</title>", "</title>") .Replace("</head>", "\n</head>"); writer.Write(newHTML); } I define my had tag like Now i have 2 questions: How does the above code affect the performance (so is this viable in an production environment)? Is there a better way to do this, for example a method which i can override to just custom render the <head>? Oh yeah ASP.NET MVC is not an option.

    - by Cullen2010
I have add a custom plugin that insert custom tags into my tinyMCE editor of the format: title I want the custom tags to be rendered with some styles when viewed in the WYSIWYG view. • Trouble with Canvas rendering in Safari/Opera

    - by Jon
Been banging my head against this one for a while, and figured I'd turn to the experts for some advice. I've made a jQuery snippet that grabs the values from a table and plots them in a line graph on a canvas element (also generated by the JS). All's well in Firefox and Chrome, but Safari and Opera aren't displaying the plotted points. I've reviewed in Firebug, Web Inspector debugger, JSLint, and checked the markup with the w3 validator, but still can't find anything glaringly obvious. Any chance one of you guys could help me out? Here's a page with a simplified example: http://bit.ly/aAshPQ Thanks!

  • Text Link is Hiding my Image Link

    - by icu222much
I have a image where text/link is overlayed on top. My problem is that sometimes the text in the foreground will hide the link in the image in the background. I assume this is because the text box forms an invisible rectangle around the text, thus creating a region that appears it should belong to the image but is actually being covered by the text. I am wondering if it is possible that when I mouse over this region, I will be linking to my image link as oppose to my text link (see illustration). http://jsfiddle.net/WHpMr/

  • rendering a new line in a string (\n) with drawRect

    - by Mrwolfy
    I am trying to render a string with a new line (line break \n), using drawRect. The code below renders the my string as a single line, with no line break, even though I am using the \n character. See the second to last line. UIFont *font = [UIFont fontWithName:@"HelveticaNeue-CondensedBlack" size:fontSize]; CGPoint point = CGPointMake(0,0); CGContextRef context = UIGraphicsGetCurrentContext(); CGContextSetRGBFillColor(context, 1.0, 1.0, 1.0, 1.0); CGContextSetRGBStrokeColor(context, 0.0, 0.0, 0.0, 1.0); CGContextSetLineWidth(context, 4.0); CGContextSetTextDrawingMode(context, kCGTextFillStroke); CGContextSaveGState(context); [@"test \n test" drawAtPoint:point withFont:font]; CGContextRestoreGState(context);

  • Rendering a different controller and action while keeping errors

    - by DerNalia
I have a form in one controller(A) that renders a partial from another controller(B), and stays on A's edit page during editing / updating etc. However... When the partial form form controller B has an error, the error doesn't show up on A's edit page right now, if there is an error, I am doing (in controller B's update method) redirect_to :controller => "A", :action => "edit" and then this is built in... but I don't know what to do with it... the error needs to be sent to controller A... but.. it doesn't format.xml { render :xml => @varFromB.errors, :status => :unprocessable_entity } thanks

  • Backbone: rendering syntax

    - by ksol
We're using Backbone.js in one of my team's projects, and this is the first time I use it. I've seen many times this kind of code (it's coffeescript, but clear enough I think. @ means this.) clients_view = new Homespa.Views.Orders.Clients.SectionView(collection: @options.clients) @$("#clients-section").html(clients_view.render().el) clients_search_view = new Homespa.Views.Orders.Clients.SearchView @$("#clients_search_modal").html(clients_search_view.render().el) Isn't there a better way to do this? I would expect to just call render on my view, and then everything's good, I shouldn't have to get the html and append/replace it by hand. Thanks for you time !

  • Where does ASP.Net get its rendered IDs from?

    - by NeilD
Hi, I've inherited a project with some nasty JavaScript that depends on hard coded object ids. i.e. There are lots of places where it does things like this var magazine = document.getElementById('repModuleDisplay__ctl3_chkCats_0'); When the page renders in my UAT environment, the HTML looks like this, and everything works OK. <input id="repModuleDisplay__ctl3_chkCats_0" type="checkbox" name="repModuleDisplay:_ctl3:chkCats:0" ... etc However, when I put it on my Production environment, the HTML is suddenly rending like this: <input id="repModuleDisplay_ctl03_chkCats_0" type="checkbox" name="repModuleDisplay$ctl03$chkCats$0" ... etc The difference in ids means that the JavaScript can't find the Element, and fails. In an ideal world, I'd scrap the buggy JavaScript and do it again properly, but for a quick fix, I'd like to know what is causing the difference in rendering between the two environments. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Neil

  • Hiding text under an image for SEO purposes

    - by JCHASE11
I am going to use a large image on my page with a bunch of text on it. The reason I am including body text on an image is because the text will be rotated, and there currently isn't any GREAT solution for rotating text seamlessly across all browsers. On this image, there is a lot of text, and I want it to be indexed by search engines. (but its a picture so it's content won't be indexed, obviously) If I was to include a div with all the text html and set the css to display:none, would Google still index the content that is hidden under the picture? Are their any other solid solutions here?

  • Extracting useful information from free text

    - by insta
We filter and analyse seats for events. Apparently writing a domain query language for the floor people isn't an option. I'm using C# 4.0 & .NET 4.0, and have relatively free reign to use whatever open-source tools are available. </background-info> If a request comes in for "FLOOR B", the sales people want it to show up if they've entered "FLOOR A-FLOOR F" in a filter. The only problem I have is that there's absolutely no structure to the parsed parameters. I get the string already concatenated (it actually uses a tilde instead of dash). Examples I've seen so far with matches after each: 101WC-199WC (needs to match 150WC) AAA-ZZZ (needs to match AAA, BBB, ABC but not BB) LOGE15-LOGE20 (needs to match LOGE15 but not LOGE150) At first I wanted to try just stripping off the numeric part of the lower and upper, and then incrementing through that. The problem I have is that only some entries have numbers, sometimes the numbers AND letters increment, sometimes its all letters that increment. Since I can't impose any kind of grammar to use (I really wanted [..] expansion syntax), I'm stuck using these entries. Are there any suggestions for how to approach this parsing problem?

  • Fastest Way To Format a Plain Text Using Javascript

    - by Nathan Campos
I have a huge plain text document, about 700kb which is very big for plain texts and I need to format it on cloud converting it to HTML, but the only things that I need to replace, format to HTML so it can be displayed by the browser, are bold and italic. For bold at the plain text they are like this: Not on bold... **bold text here** not bold here And italic like this: Not italic... *italic text* no italic Just like StackOverflow does for their formatting, but the problem is that I need to make it a lot faster, since the text is so big... One of my ideas was to add a page slide, so I the script just need to format some part of the text, not it all, then after the user changes the page the script would be called again, but the problem is how I can make the code for this all?

  • Type-aware rendering (and editing) of tabular data in pyqt4

    - by pihentagy
I would like to have a very short / minimal example of how to create some tabular widget with different types of item in it. In the first round let's say I'd like to render [["Hello", 12, True], ["World", 13, False]] (Hello as string, 12 as number (right-align), True as a checkbox for eg.), but it would be nice to have Dates, Colors, and other type of info. Next round: editing (integer with spinbox, maybe sometimes a combobox is handy, but that may not work out of the box). There must be a simple solution, but I couldn't find...
