• Multiple iSCSI Targets or 1 that's shared?

  On my network I have several types of files I want to save on a SAN like: SQL db's and logs Exchange data Random files Now I'm wondering if I should create one iSCSI Target with a large volume and initiate that from one of the servers. (and share it so other servers can use it too) Or I should create separate Targets to have each server use its own storage. For the record the storage could be separated because the servers aren't using the shared data. For one reason I was thinking of one storage is ease of backup. (but perhaps performance could be a problem?) What would be an advisable configuration for these type of data?

• How to extend a partition in Windows 2000 Server

  I have a Windows 2000 Server set up with RAID 5. I initially defined 2 136 GB logical disks 0 and 1. I have a small utility partition on disk 0 along with the C drive. I wish to extend the C drive to use disk 1 as well, which is now configured to drive D. I deleted drive D, but it is still in disk 1. I download partdisk.exe from MS, but am not sure how to accomplish what I want to do. I know I need to use extend, but I think I need to remove disk 1 and somehow add the unallocated space to disk zero, but am not at all confident on how to do it.

• Better urls for this internal web server?

  I've got a server that I have admin access to, but don't fully manage. (I think it's a virtual machine, but I'm not 100% sure. It's running Apache on Windows Server 2003.) I share the ip with another user, so my sites all have to use the :8080 port. This is kind of ugly. Also, AFAIK, the only access I have is through an ip address. (I'm inside a corporate firewall and don't think I have access to a DNS server or anything.) I've adjusted my hosts file so I don't have to use the ip address on my local machine, but that's not a very generic solution. Are there any options to 1) get rid of the port requirement 2) be able to use a name (maybe a machine name) instead of the ip address in a generic way? (I'm not really a network admin -- I'm a developer managing this machine. The IT folks who really manage it are a few people away from me and tough to get to do anything, so I'm looking for a light-weight solution if possible.)

• Two sites running same code and different config files?

  I have a Windows 2008R2 server with IIS, running one site (ASP.NET4.5). All the parameters are written in web.config file. I have to add a new site, that will run on the same code (same root folder) as the first one, but will read parameters like sql connection strings etc. from its own config file, not from first site web.config. How can I do that? Is it possible to run the second site in different app pool? Both sites will run the same .NET version of course. Thank you!

• How to set up multi users on dev server with git and github

  I'm working on lamp application. We have 2 servers (Debian) Live and Dev. I constantly work on dev main to add new features and fix bugs. When happy all works well I scp the relevant code to the Live system. Database (mysql) is local to each machine. Now this is pretty basic setup really and I want to improve the workflow a bit. I use git and github for version control. Admittedly I've only really used one branch. Their can be 3 different developers who work on the code at different times. We all use the same linux username to connect to the dev server and edit the code directly when needed. I usually then commit and push the code at the end of the day to github. One thing to bare in mind is it isn't easy to run this code on a local machine as there are many apache and subdomain configurations that wouldn't work on a local machine so it is important to work on the dev server not locally. I need to create a new process because we need to have a main trunk now and a branch with a big code re-write. What is the best way to do this. Should I create different unix logins for each developer and set up different working areas on the dev server for there changes? e.g. /var/www/mysite_derek /var/www/mysite_paul /var/www/mysite_mike my thinking is they can do a pull from the main branch and then create there own branch and merge it back in. I'm not sure how this will work though with git locally and with github. will i need to create different github user accounts as well. I'd like to do this the 'right' way and future proof for having lots of potential developers but I also don't want to over complicate it. I simple and elegant solution is preferred. any recommendations or suggestions?

• ubuntu 12.04 kvm virtual server network setup, can't get the machine to be connectable

  I have worked on my Ubuntu Server host for weeks now and I just can not manage to get the virtual machines into the network.... here's what I need to do: I need to be able to create virtual machines that have IP addresses that can be reached from the outside (192.168 network). I need to be able to connect to the virtual machines through ssh, ftp, http and preferably https, anything else doesn't matter that much. So far everything seems simple enough and I have a lot of leeway in terms of IP address range and server/client configuration. I have the option of taking part of a /24 net as most IPs aren't used, and if it's absolutely necessary I have the option of creating a new /24 subnet. Also have the option of reformatting and reinstalling OS on the host and recreating the virtual machines as nothing has been done other than trying to get virtual machines to work. I would prefer if the virtual machines were just part of the normal network which would be 192.168.5.0/24. The host machine has 2 network cards so I don't even necessarily need the Host to be connectable in the same /24 network. I have tried (I think) just about everything from about 5 different tutorials on bridging (giving br0 the same IP that eth0 used to have (Host is able to connect to VM and vice versa, VM doesn't have outside network access), having eth0 set up like it always was and having br0 have a different IP (same as above), NAT with port forwarding (which I would have preferred not to use but will if it works), turning off one of the hosts network cards and just using one of them, different subnets.... etc. I do know my way around iptables fairly well.... Host is 64bit Ubuntu Server 12.04, using libvirt/kvm. edits: Local network is 192.168.5.0/24, host has static ip 192.168.5.254, GW .5.1 which is also nameserver. We have a second Local network at 192.168.10.0/24 with .10.1 GW, but both hosts and VMs were supposed to go into the .5 subnet. The .10 subnet isn't required, but it wouldn't be horrible if the Host were only accessible in the .10 subnet.

  I have set up an OpenVPN server on Windows 2003, and I want to route all client traffic through the VPN, so that my clients can connect to the Internet through the VPN server. In the server configuration, I added push "redirect-gateway def1". I know the server needs to be configured to deal with the traffic somehow: for example, on Linux, I can use iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 10.8.0.0/24 -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE. The problem is, I don't know how to deal with the traffic on Windows Server 2003. Is there any way to accomplish this?

I'm trying to choose between two machines (on hetzner.de): A) intel i7-2600 3.4 GHz 16 GB DDR3 RAM B) intel i7-920 2.6 GHz 24 GB DDR3 RAM B has 50% more RAM but 30% slower clock speed. Q is: is it obvious where the bottleneck will be? Would I ever need 24GB of RAM, even with lots of concurrent users?

• Using DateTime in a SqlParameter for Stored Procedure, format error

  I'm trying to call a stored procedure (on a SQL 2005 server) from C#, .NET 2.0 using DateTime as a value to a SqlParameter. The SQL type in the stored procedure is 'datetime'. Executing the sproc from SQL Management Studio works fine. But everytime I call it from C# I get an error about the date format. When I run SQL Profiler to watch the calls, I then copy paste the exec call to see whats going on. These are my observations and notes about what I've attempted: 1) If I pass the DateTime in directly as a DateTime or converted to SqlDateTime, the field is surrounding by a PAIR of single quotes, such as @Date_Of_Birth=N''1/8/2009 8:06:17 PM'' 2) If I pass the DateTime in as a string, I only get the single quotes 3) Using SqlDateTime.ToSqlString() does not result in a UTC formatted datetime string (even after converting to universal time) 4) Using DateTime.ToString() does not result in a UTC formatted datetime string. 5) Manually setting the DbType for the SqlParameter to DateTime does not change the above observations. So, my questions then, is how on earth do I get C# to pass the properly formatted time in the SqlParameter? Surely this is a common use case, why is it so difficult to get working? Update and Success First and foremost, thank you everyone for the answers. I post this for the sake of completeness and accuracy on SO - because I certainly do not do it for my pride... I had copy/pasted the code above after the request from below. I trimmed things here and there to be concise. Turns out my problem was in the code I left out, which I'm sure any one of you would have spotted in an instant. I had wrapped my sproc calls inside a transaction. Turns out that I was simply not doing transaction.Commit()!!!!! I'm ashamed to say it, but there you have it. I still don't know what's going on with the syntax I get back from the profiler. A coworker watched with his own instance of the profiler from his computer, and it returned proper syntax. Watching the very SAME executions from my profiler showed the incorrect syntax. It acted as a red-herring, making me believe there was a query syntax problem instead of the much more simple and true answer, which was that I need to commit the transaction! I marked an answer below as correct, and threw in some up-votes on others because they did, after all, answer the question, even if they didn't fix my specific (brain lapse) issue.   I am using JDBC to connect to my microsoft access database. I get the following exception when I try to connect to the database: java.sql.SQLException: [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] The specified DSN contains an architecture mismatch between the Driver and Application I am using 64bit windows7, and I am using eclipse which is also a 64bit version My database is a microsoft access database and it seems that the driver is a 32bit driver which is causing the problem. I read somewhere that microsoft has not released a 64bit driver for microsoft access! Any help on how to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated.

  We're writing a server application that needs to use an ActiveX object that must be visible and Top-Most otherwise it doesn't render correctly. The challenge is that servers typically don't have an active desktop, and therefore the applications should not require one. Ours does. I must use this ActiveX, and I don't have access to the source code. When running from within remote-desktop everything works fine as long as the session is open. As soon as the session closes it stops working. I'm guessing this is because there is no desktop. Any ideas how I can work this out in a secure and robust way?

• Uploading image file from website on yahoo server causes 410 gone error message when trying to acces

  I have a form that lets users upload a photo of themselves. This seems to work. The photo does exist on the server once uploaded.   Hi all, so this is the scenario: I have a base class for all login-controlled pages: public class SessionControlledPage : Page { protected virtual void Page_Load(Object sender, EventArgs e) { Response.AddHeader("Refresh", Convert.ToString(Session.Timeout * 60 + 5)); if (Session.IsNewSession) { Response.Redirect("~/login.aspx"); } } } And a regularpage.aspx page that inherints from the base class: public partial class RegularPage : SessionControlledPage { override protected void Page_Load(Object sender, EventArgs e) { base.Page_Load(sender, e); Server.Transfer("~/otherpage.aspx"); } } Now let's say the original URL was http://localhost/regularpage.aspx and that Session.Timeout = 5. The problem appears when the refresh happens after the transfer takes place. I'm getting a 404 Not Found error and the URL changes for http://localhost/305. Notice that 5 * 60 + 5 = 305. Do you know why is this happening? got a solution? PD: I use transfer because I need to access some properties of regularpage.aspx on otherpage.aspx, maybe you could provide another solution for this too.

• Need help with testdisk output

  I had (note the past tense) an ubuntu 12.04 system with separate partitions for the base and /home directories. It started acting wonky, so I decided to do a reinstall with 12.10, intending just to do a reinstall to the base partition. After several seconds, I realize that the installer was repartitioning the drive and reinstalling, so I pulled the power cord. I'm now trying to recover as much as I can with testdisk, but it seems that testdisk is finding 100 unique partitions when I run it - they mostly tend to be HFS+ or solaris /home (which I think is just an ext4; I've never had solaris on the machine). I've pasted an abbreviated version of the testdisk output below (first ~100 lines, and then ~100 lines from the middle of the output). Is there a way to combine or recreate the partitions and then data recovery, or some other way maximize what I can recover (ideally as much of the file system as possible)? I really only care about what was in the /home directory - I'd rather not use photorec since I don't have another 2 TB HD lying around to recover to.   I have a blog hosted on blogspot dot com. In that blog, i want to put some data like Google search string or etc automatically. I want it to be done in this way: Just put a code (server side scripting) linking to a text file or PHP file, and the code will extract the text and output in my blogspot blog. What i DONT want is to use javascript. Beacause, if i use javascript then the output will be seen only in the users screen. I want the output to be seen by Google Bot too. Whenever any visitor visit my blogspot blog through Google, the search search string is tracked through a javascript and the search string is saved in another server (say serverX) Step (2). Now, when another visitor (human/Google Bot/Any downloader/etc..) visits my blog, he/she should be able to see the search string (Saved in ServerX) in my blog (anywhere, be it content or at the bottom of the blog....it doesn't matter) Well, I can code the javascript and can also write a php code to save the search string... but i've absolutely NO idea how to do the step (2) Please tell me how to do Step 2...   Hi, I have been trying to figure this out a while. I would like to make my app engine website use basic html and shtml whenever in order to avoid the slow warm-up phase of jsp apps on app engine. This is so that my landing pages load instantly. Basically, I am trying to include an html file into my main html file (index.html - I tried index.shtml). This is the command I try: <!-- include virtual="header.html" --> However it does not work. The server side includes to not seem to get executed in app engine. Do I need to enable these commands somewhere first - or does app engine simply not allow them?

The code is command line driven which have been great so far, but I recently decided I want to make the functionality available through web-services. Since my is complex and I'm happy with the way it's written , I don't want go through the pain of porting it to other languages. So I set out on a google journey to find out what web servers exist (on a Linux machine, though it's interesting to hear the answer without that limitation). From what I could find, it seems that there are two viable options: Apache Tomcat and Sun Java Server. What are the reason to choose one on top of the other? what are the strength of each and what are the weaknesses? Or, perhaps, there is a third one which is much easier, flexible and less cumbersome. Anyone?

I am getting the following error multiple times on the project dashboard web page on the TFS2010 project protal after creating a brand new project in the default project collection. I am not an expert with WSS, so any guidance will be greatly appreciated. After reading a few articles I understand there are some DLL that are probably not declared as safe in a web config file. But I am not sure which DLL they are and where the web config file is. I looked at IIS to determine the directory structure in IIS is quiet different to the URL path ...Thanks very much. • Sending an email with attachment from server side

  I have to create a word document in a specific format and send it as attachment to some email addresses. I have a preview screen for the report which on approval has to be send in email. This is an ASP.NET MVC 3 application. I am left with a few options here. I am creating the preview using html. I can convert this html into doc and send it, which would be a straight solution. But capturing the Response object's output is being a tough job. I thought of using Mail merge functionality of MS word, where I'll be filling the placeholders of the doc template. But the problem is conceptually, it doesn't appear to be mail merge. I have found someone suggesting to use RTF format and replace the placeholders with database values. Which is the right thing to do? What's the best solution here? Is there any other option than the three listed above?
