  • Is there any way that an export-to-Excel function can be scalable?

    - by MusiGenesis
Summary: ASP.Net website with a couple hundred users. Data is exported to Excel files which can be relatively large (~5 MB). In the pilot phase (just a few users), we are already seeing occasional errors on the server in the exporting method. Here's the stack trace: System.Web.HttpUnhandledException: Exception of type 'System.Web.HttpUnhandledException' was thrown. --- System.OutOfMemoryException: Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown. at System.IO.MemoryStream.set_Capacity(Int32 value) at System.IO.MemoryStream.EnsureCapacity(Int32 value) at System.IO.MemoryStream.Write(Byte[] buffer, Int32 offset, Int32 count) at MS.Internal.IO.Packaging.TrackingMemoryStream.Write(Byte[] buffer, Int32 offset, Int32 count) at MS.Internal.IO.Packaging.SparseMemoryStream.WriteAndCollapseBlocks(Byte[ ] buffer, Int32 offset, Int32 count) at MS.Internal.IO.Packaging.SparseMemoryStream.Write(Byte[] buffer, Int32 offset, Int32 count) at MS.Internal.IO.Packaging.CompressEmulationStream.Write(Byte[] buffer, Int32 offset, Int32 count) at MS.Internal.IO.Packaging.CompressStream.Write(Byte[] buffer, Int32 offset, Int32 count) at MS.Internal.IO.Zip.ProgressiveCrcCalculatingStream.Write(Byte[] buffer, Int32 offset, Int32 count) at MS.Internal.IO.Zip.ZipIOModeEnforcingStream.Write(Byte[] buffer, Int32 offset, Int32 count) at System.IO.StreamWriter.Flush(Boolean flushStream, Boolean flushEncoder) at System.IO.StreamWriter.Write(String value) at System.Xml.XmlTextEncoder.Write(String text) at System.Xml.XmlTextWriter.WriteString(String text) at System.Xml.XmlText.WriteTo(XmlWriter w) at System.Xml.XmlAttribute.WriteContentTo(XmlWriter w) at System.Xml.XmlAttribute.WriteTo(XmlWriter w) at System.Xml.XmlElement.WriteTo(XmlWriter w) at System.Xml.XmlElement.WriteContentTo(XmlWriter w) at System.Xml.XmlElement.WriteTo(XmlWriter w) at System.Xml.XmlElement.WriteContentTo(XmlWriter w) at System.Xml.XmlElement.WriteTo(XmlWriter w) at System.Xml.XmlElement.WriteContentTo(XmlWriter w) at System.Xml.XmlElement.WriteTo(XmlWriter w) at System.Xml.XmlDocument.WriteContentTo(XmlWriter xw) at System.Xml.XmlDocument.WriteTo(XmlWriter w) at System.Xml.XmlDocument.Save(Stream outStream) at OfficeOpenXml.ExcelWorksheet.Save() in C:\temp\XXXXXXXXXX\ExcelPackage\ExcelWorksheet.cs:line 605 at OfficeOpenXml.ExcelWorkbook.Save() in C:\temp\XXXXXXXXXX\ExcelPackage\ExcelWorkbook.cs:line 439 at OfficeOpenXml.ExcelPackage.Save() in C:\temp\XXXXXXXXXX\ExcelPackage\ExcelPackage.cs:line 348 at Framework.Exporting.Business.ExcelExport.BuildReport(HttpContext context) at WebUserControl.BtnXLS_Click(Object sender, EventArgs e) in C:\TEMP\XXXXXXXXXX\XXXXXXXXXX\OneList\UserControls\TicketReportExporter. ascx.cs:line 108 at System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button.OnClick(EventArgs e) at System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button.RaisePostBackEvent(String eventArgument) at System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button.System.Web.UI.IPostBackEventHandler.Rai sePostBackEvent(String eventArgument) at System.Web.UI.Page.RaisePostBackEvent(IPostBackEventHandler sourceControl, String eventArgument) at System.Web.UI.Page.RaisePostBackEvent(NameValueCollection postData) at System.Web.UI.Page.ProcessRequestMain(Boolean includeStagesBeforeAsyncPoint, Boolean includeStagesAfterAsyncPoint) --- End of inner exception stack trace --- at System.Web.UI.Page.HandleError(Exception e) at System.Web.UI.Page.ProcessRequestMain(Boolean includeStagesBeforeAsyncPoint, Boolean includeStagesAfterAsyncPoint) at System.Web.UI.Page.ProcessRequest(Boolean includeStagesBeforeAsyncPoint, Boolean includeStagesAfterAsyncPoint) at System.Web.UI.Page.ProcessRequest() at System.Web.UI.Page.ProcessRequestWithNoAssert(HttpContext context) at System.Web.UI.Page.ProcessRequest(HttpContext context) at ASP.XXXXXXXXXXX_aspx.ProcessRequest(HttpContext context) in c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files\XXXX\cdf32a52\d1a5eabd\App_Web_enxdwlks.1.cs:line 0 at System.Web.HttpApplication.CallHandlerExecutionStep.System.Web.HttpAppli cation.IExecutionStep.Execute() at System.Web.HttpApplication.ExecuteStep(IExecutionStep step, Boolean& completedSynchronously) Even aside from this particular problem, in general exporting to Excel requires the instantiation of huge Excel objects on the server for each request, which I've always assumed to mean disqualifies Excel for "serious" work on a highly-loaded server. Is there any general way to export to Excel in a "light-weight" manner? Would simply streaming the data into a CSV file work for this?

  • Protecting DLL's

    - by j-t-s
Hi All Quite a few people have really taken interest in the dll's ivé sent them, and they're not the type that should be given away for free too often... I was just wondering, if I were to sell my components, user controls etc, how would I go about protecting them, in terms of ownership/encrypting code (if possible) etc.. What steps have you taken to help prevent people using yours without paying for them? Thank you very much! jt

  • Working with Hibernate Queries

    - by jschoen
I am new to hibernate queries, and trying to get a grasp on how everything works. I am using Hibernate 3 with Netbeans 6.5. I have a basic project set up and have been playing around with how to do everything. I started with essentially a search query. Where the user can enter values into one or more fields. The table would be Person with the columns first_name, middle_name, last_name for the sake of the example. The first way I found was to have a method that took firstName, middleName, and lastName as parameters: Session session = HibernateUtil.getSessionFactory().getCurrentSession(); Transaction tx = session.beginTransaction(); String query = "from Person where (first_name = :firstName or :firstName is null) "+ "and (middle_name = :middleName or :middleName is null) " "and (last_name = :lastname or :lastName is null)"; Query q = session.createQuery(query); q.setString("firstName", firstName); q.setString("middleName", middleName); q.setString("lastName", lastName); List<Person> results = (List<Person>) q.list(); This did not sit well with me, since it seemed like I should not have to write that much, and well, that I was doing it wrong. So I kept digging and found another way: Session session = HibernateUtil.getSessionFactory().getCurrentSession(); Transaction tx = session.beginTransaction(); Criteria crit = session.createCriteria(Person.class); if (firstName != null) { crit.add(Expression.ge("firstName", firstName); } if (middleName != null) { crit.add(Expression.ge("middleName", middleName); } if (lastName != null) { crit.add(Expression.ge("lastName", lastName); } List<Person> results = (List<Person>) crit.list(); So what I am trying to figure out is which way is the preferred way for this type of query? Criteria or Query? Why? I am guessing that Criteria is the preferred way and you should only use Query when you need to write it by hand for performance type reasons. Am I close?

  • Delphi - Frac function losing precision.

    - by PeteDaMeat
I have a TDateTime variable which is assigned a value at runtime of 40510.416667. When I extract the time to a TTime type variable using the Frac function, it sets it to 0.41666666666. Why has it changed the precision of the value and is there a workround to retain the precision from the original value ie. to set it to 0.416667.

  • How to monitor a POP, SMTP and Exchange Server for mail activity

    - by Gerhard
We need to write a .Net (C#) application that monitors all mail activity through a POP, SMTP and Exchange Server (2007 and later) and essentially grab the mail for archiving into a document management system. I realise that the way to monitor each type of server would probably be different so I'd like to know what the best (most elegant and reliable) way is to achieve this. Thanks.

  • How to declare NSString constants for passing to NSNotificationCenter

I've got the following in my .h file: #ifndef _BALANCE_NOTIFICATION #define _BALANCE NOTIFICATION const NSString *BalanceUpdateNotification #endif and the following in my .m file: const NSString *BalanceUpdateNotification = @"BalanceUpdateNotification"; I'm using this with the following codes: [[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver:self selector:@selector(updateBalance:) name:BalanceUpdateNotification object:nil]; and [[NSNotificatoinCenter defaultCenter] postNotificationName:BalanceUpdateNotificatoin object:self userInfo:nil]; Which works, but it gives me a warning: Passing argument 1 of 'postNotificationName:object:userInfo' discards qualifiers from pointer target type So, I can cast it to (NSString *), but I'm wondering what the proper way to do this is.

  • How do you 'clone' WebControls in C# .NET ?

    - by Adz
My basic question is, in .NET, how do I clone WebControls? I would like to build a custom tag, which can produce multiple copies of its children. Ultimately I intend to build a tag similar to in JSP/Struts. But the first hurdle I have is the ability to duplicate/clone the contents of a control. Consider this rather contrived example; <custom:duplicate count="2"> <div> <p>Some html</p> <asp:TextBox id="tb1" runat="server" /> </div> </custom:duplicate> The HTML markup which is output would be something like, <div> <p>Some html</p> <input type="text" id="tb1" /> </div> <div> <p>Some html</p> <input type="text" id="tb1" /> </div> Note: I know i have the id duplicated, I can come up with a solution to that later! So what we would have is my custom control with 3 children (I think) - a literal control, a TextBox control, and another literal control. In this example I have said 'count=2' so what the control should do is output/render its children twice. What I would hope to do is write some "OnInit" code which does something like: List<WebControl> clones; for(int i=1; i<count; i++) { foreach(WebControl c in Controls) { WebControl clone = c.Clone(); clones.Add(clone); } } Controls.AddRange(clones); However, as far as I can tell, WebControls do not implement ICloneable, so its not possible to clone them in this way. Any ideas how I can clone WebControls?

  • Can I use a single DateTime field on the Entity Framework model side when the value is stored in a set of Int fields in the actual database?

    - by Ivan
The actual table in the database has separate integer fields for storing year, month, day, hour and minute values (all in UTC) (seconds and milliseconds are irrelevant for my task and considered equal to zero). Needless to say it would be of great convenience to have just one field of DateTime type on the application side and hide all the conversion under the cover of the Entity Framework model code. Any directions on how to do that? I am not very experienced with Entity Framework yet.

  • JavaScript - Why does google-maps wait until jquery finishes download?

    - by Teddyk
I'm using the following Google Maps autload (asynchronous) to load asynchronous both Google Maps v3 and JQuery, like so: <script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.google.com/jsapi?autoload={ "modules":[ {name:"maps",version:3,other_params:"sensor=false"},{"name":"jquery","version":"1.4.2"},{"name":"jqueryui","version":"1.8.1"} ]}"></script> However, looking at the network traffic, it appears that it is not downloading asynchronously. Question: Does anyone understand why the %7Bcommon (google-maps) file is being delayed from download until the jquery-ui.min file completes download first?

  • ASP.NET site sometimes freezing up and/or showing odd text at top of the page while loading, on load

    - by MGOwen
I have various servers (dev, 2 x test, 2 x prod) running the same asp.net site. The test and prod servers are in load-balanced pairs (prod1 with prod2, and test1 with test2). The test server pair is exhibiting some kind of (super) slowdown or freezing during about one in ten page loads. Sometimes a line of text appears at the very top of the page which looks something like: 00 OK Date: Thu, 01 Apr 2010 01:50:09 GMT Server: Microsoft-IIS/6.0 X-Powered_By: ASP.NET X-AspNet-Version:2.0.50727 Cache-Control:private Content-Type:text/html; charset=ut (the beginning and end are "cut off".) Has anyone seen anything like this before? Any idea what it means or what's causing it? Edit: I often see this too when clicking something - it comes up as red text on a yellow page: XML Parsing Error: not well-formed Location: http://203.111.46.211/3DSS/CompanyCompliance.aspx?cid=14 Line Number 1, Column 24:2mMTehON9OUNKySVaJ3ROpN" / -----------------------^ If I go back and click again, it works (I see the page I clicked on, not the above error message). Update: ...And, instead of the page loading, I sometimes just get a white screen with text like this in black (looks a lot like the above text): HTTP/1.1 302 Found Date: Wed, 21 Apr 2010 04:53:39 GMT Server: Microsoft-IIS/6.0 X-Powered-By: ASP.NET X-AspNet-Version: 2.0.50727 Location: /3DSS/EditSections.aspx?id=3&siteId=56&sectionId=46 Set-Cookie: .3DSS=A6CAC223D0F2517D77C7C68EEF069ABA85E9392E93417FFA4209E2621B8DCE38174AD699C9F0221D30D49E108CAB8A828408CF214549A949501DAFAF59F080375A50162361E4AA94E08874BF0945B2EF; path=/; HttpOnly Cache-Control: private Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8 Content-Length: 184 object moved here Where "here" is a link that points to a URL just like the one I'm requesting, except with an extra folder in it, meaning something like: http://123.1.2.3/MySite//MySite/Page.aspx?option=1 instead of: http://123.1.2.3/MySite/Page.aspx?option=1 Update: A colleague of mine found some info saying it might be because the test servers are running iis in 64 bit (64bit win 2003) (prod servers are 32 bit win 2003). So we tried telling IIS to use 32 bit: **cscript %SYSTEMDRIVE%\inetpub\adminscripts\adsutil.vbs SET W3SVC/AppPools/Enable32bitAppOnWin64 1 %SYSTEMROOT%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_regiis.exe -i ** (from this MS support page) But iis stopped working altogether (got "server unavailable" on a white page instead of web sites). Reversing the above (see the link) didn't work at first either. The ASP.NET tab disappeared from our IIS web site properties and we had to mess around for an hour uninstalling (aspnet_regiis.exe -u) and reinstalling 32 bit ASP.NET and adding Default.aspx manually back into default documents. We'll probably try again in a few days, if anyone has anything to add in the meantime, please do.
