• Fake Shortcuts in Windows - Is there an API? One for C#?

  I'm not sure what they call the fake shortcuts you often see in Windows now. A good example would be the link to any of the Office 2007 programs. You can tell one of these from a regular shortcut because the Target is grayed out and is not a real path. Can you access these through a .NET API? Like ask for the target? or get any of the information stored within it. I think these are somehow related to Windows Installer and Advertised programs.

  I am using an ASP.NET AJAX Masked Edit Extender to format phone numbers <asp:TextBox ID="tbPhoneNumber" runat="server" /> <ajaxToolkit:MaskedEditExtender TargetControlID="tbPhoneNumber" Mask="(999)999-9999" MaskType="Number" InputDirection="LeftToRight" ClearMaskOnLostFocus="false" ClearTextOnInvalid="false" runat="server" AutoComplete="false" /> On the page load event I am trying to populate the phone textbox as follows: protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { tbPhoneNumber.Text = "(394)456-310"; } So there is one number which is missing at the end to make it a valid phone number. When the page loads I expected the value in the textbox to be (394)456-310_ But it displays (_39)445-6310 Why is this happening?

  I am converting my database from sql server 2005 to mysql using asp .net mvc. I have bulk data in sql server(around 4 lakh records), But i am facing command timeout/wating for comand timeout error which when i search on google can be given 65535 as its highest value Or can be given 0 if someone wants that comand should wait for unlimited time untill its above command get executed. Both of these a'int working with me. I also have given any connectTimeout to 180. So shoiuld i have to change it too. Anybody who had face this problem or have any confirm knowledge please share

• CustomErrors section does not handle 404 properly on production server

  Hi, I'd like my ASP.NET MVC application to redirect failed requests to matching action methods of a certain controller. This works fine on my development machine running Windows 7, but not on my production machine running Windows 2008 R2. I set up my web.config as follows: <customErrors mode="On" defaultRedirect="/Error/ServerError/500"> <error statusCode="403" redirect="/Error/AccessDenied" /> <error statusCode="404" redirect="/Error/FileNotFound" /> </customErrors> This customErrors section works fine on both of my machines (production and development) for 500 Internal Server errors. It also works fine for 404 errors on my development machine. However, it does not properly redirect 404 errors on the production machine. Instead of /Error/FileNotFound, I get the standard 404 page that comes with IIS 7. What could be the problem here?

• Environment variables get lost between MSBuild projects

  Hi, I have a .NET solution containing following projects: web application (WAP) web deployment (WDP, .wdproj) wix setup (WIX, .wixproj) In the WDP I've used a custom MSBuild task (SetEnvVar) to set some env. variables for further use in the build process. After setting them I can use them without prob. in the WDP but in the WIX they are empty/undefined. The strange thing is that when I reference those env. vars in the WIX files (by using properties in .wxs or preproc vars in .wxi) I get the values as expected. Do you have any idea why the env. vars get lost/are undefined in .wixproj? By the way the (solution) build process is triggered from inside VS 2010.

• Give style attributes to sub-elements inside a <style> tag?

  My <style> for thumbnails currently looks like this: <style type="text/css"> img.TN { width: 100%; margin-bottom: 5.294%; cursor: pointer; } </style> This is annoying, because I have to apply this style to every single thumbnail image individually, when there could be any number of them on the screen at any given time. All of the thumbnails are inside a single <div> that groups them together, and I'd like to apply a single style to the <div> that will push the attributes I need down to all of the the <img> elements nested inside, regardless how many thumbnails there are. I'm using ASP.NET 2.0, and CSS 2.0 Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks!

• NDjango throws TypeLoadException

  Hi All, I'm just trying to get started with NDjango but am having issues running a basic test app. When running the page in either debug or release the following exception is thrown: Could not load type 'Microsoft.FSharp.Core.CompilerMessageAttribute' from assembly 'FSharp.Core, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a'. This is thrown when the NDjangoHandle is created in the HttpApplication ctor. The fsharp assemblies are definitely all there in the gac (and they seem to be distributed with NDjango too) so I'm a bit confused about this one. Googling this turns up zip. I'm using NDjango 0.9.7.0 for .NET 4.0 in vis studio 2010 Cheers

• How to handle value types when embedding IronPython in C#?

  There is a well known issue when it comes to using .NET value types in IronPython. This has recently caused me a headache when trying to use Python as an embedded scripting language in C#. The problem can be summed up as follows: Given a C# struct such as: struct Vector { public float x; public float y; } And a C# class such as: class Object { public Vector position; } The following will happen in IronPython: obj = Object() print obj.position.x # prints ‘0’ obj.position.x = 1 print obj.position.x # still prints ‘0’ As the article states, this means that value types are mostly immutable. However, this is a problem as I was planning on using a vector library that is implemented as seen above. Are there any workarounds for working with existing libraries that rely on value types? Modifying the library would be the very last resort, but I'd rather avoid that.

• Silverlight Cannot find XML data source

  Hello.. I am very new to Silverlight development. I understand that this is client side technology therefore the paradyme is differant from that of conventional ASP.NET development. Having said that, I don't understand where my server side code is deployed. I have a silver light \ MVC application. I am trying to read an XML document from within my 'Models' folder. The following peice of code is executed from within a class that is in the same location as the XML document, 'Models'. The load() results in a SystemIOFileNotFound exception. I noticed that when building the application the XML document is not laid down in the same location as the web project's assembly. I assume this is specific to the fact that this is a Silverlight project. • ASP MVC View Content as JSON

  I have a MVC app with quite a few Controller Actions that are called using Ajax (jQuery) and return partial views content which updates a part of the screen. But what I would rather do is return JSON something like this. return Json(new { Result = true, Message = "Item has been saved", Content = View("Partial") }); Where the HTML is just a property of the Json. What this means is I need to retrieve the HTML that is rendered by the View method. Is there any easy way to do this, a few examples I have seen are quite convoluted. Edit: This question was originally for ASP.NET MVC 1, but if version 2 makes it easier I would like to hear the answer.

  hello, I got a situation over here. We have a .Net application running on intranet ServerA(database/application server). Now we have also implemented the application on a other machine ServerB (application server only,windows Server 2003, IIS 6.0) database is pointed towards serverA. Everything works fine but the problem is we have some web forms where we are allowing some users to attach some files like documents , pdf etc. But the Public users are facing problem with the attachments. However, most documentation that describes how the managed heap works depicts it as a linear data structure, such as a linked list or stack. So, is the managed heap actually a heap, or is it implemented with some other data structure? If it actually does not use a heap data structure, is seems like a significant failure of terminology to overload the meaning of this word. If it is in fact a heap data structure, what is the value that satisfies the heap property: the size of the allocated memory region?

We need to build a system that maintains a local copy of the data for each client. So basically the client database will have all tables and columns except for the ClientId that is in ever server table. • Tiny MCE ImageManager Plugin, "cant create instance of plugin"

  We just bought MCImageManager and went right on to creating our own plugin. I followed http://wiki.moxiecode.com/index.php/MCI … ing_plugin from start to end but got stuck on the last step. After configuring the build.bat file (that comes along the package) it gives me no errors, i checked all paths and it should work but there just is no plugin.dll file anywhere to be found. (The bat file is also linked to the .net 1.4322, that should be changed by you at tinyMCE in my opinion) To circumvent that problem I started a new project and compiled the plugin.dll through Visual Studio. Then placed the dll in the c:..\project\plugins\plugin\bin\ folder (at the same place as the _TemplatePlugin.dll file but with the plugins name) All i get from running the application is "Could not create instance of plugin class: Moxiecode.Manager.Plugins.Plugin" What is it I'm missing? All the other plugins ain't giving this error and they follow the same structure as my custom plugin. Thanks in advance //Micael

• Setting a session variable in Global.asax causes AJAX errors

  I'm getting a very peculiar problem with my asp.net application, it took me an age to track down but I still don't know what is causing this behaviour. If I set a session variable in the Application_PreRequestHandlerExecute event, then my external JavaScript files are ignored, and therfore causing a raft of errors. I have simplified the problem below. E.g. I have file called JScript.js containing the code: function myAlert() { alert("Hi World"); } And in my Default.aspx file I reference the js with the code: <script src="JScript.js" type="text/javascript"></script> And in the body onload event I call the myAlert() function: <body onload="myAlert()"> And finally in the Global.asax file: Private Sub Application_PreRequestHandlerExecute(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs) HttpContext.Current.Session("myVar") = "MyValue" End Sub If you run the Default.aspx file you will see the js function isnt called, however, if you comment out the line of code Global.asax then the external js is called and the function executed when the page loads. Why is this?

• Control within ascx is null when ascx is added from codebehind

  I am having difficulties how to construct my question, but if I have to put it simply the situation is that I have categories of products. I have an aspx with a repeater on the left that lists the categories. And I want the products to be listed on the right. Category number is variable so I made an ascx with a DataList in it. When I try to do foreach category, ascx = new ascx(); then the DataList within this ascx control is null. ps: what I want to do is to preload all the products (thre is not much) and hide the divs and fadein fadeout them using jQuery when a category div is clicked. rightnow it is using jQuery.load(); and I don't like how the images load, cuz they download from top to bottom. • Visual Studio "Any CPU" target

  I have some confusion related to the .NET platform build options in VS 2008 Does anyone have a clear understanding what does "Any CPU" compilation target is and what sort of files it generates? I examined the output executable of this "Any CPU" build and found that they are (who would not see that coming!) the x86 executables. So, is there any the difference between targeting executable to x86 vs "Any CPU"? Another thing that I noticed, is that managed C++ projects do not have this platform as option. I'm wondering why is that. Does that mean that my suspicion about "Any CPU" executables being plain 32-bit ones is right?

• How to create Encryption Key for Encryption Algorithms?

  I want to use encryption algorithm available in .Net Security namespace, however I am trying to understand how to generate the key, for example AES algorithm needs 256 bits, that 16 bytes key, and some initialization vector, which is also few bytes. Can I use any combination of values in my Key and IV? e.g. all zeros in Key and IV are valid or not? I know the detail of algorithm which does lots of xors, so zero wont serve any good, but are there any restrictions by these algorithms? Or Do I have to generate the key using some program and save it permanently somewhere?

• Using WebParts results in blank page

  Hi, I'm developing an ASP.NET (C#) application using EPiServer CMS 5. On the startpage we have four WebPart-zones and everything works great running it through Visual Studio. When publishing it to the production-server the startpage shows as a blank page, no error what so ever... • Quickly check which part of the page lifecycle a control is in

  Is there any way to check what events have fired during the asp.net webforms page/control lifecycle? I know that I can manually add handlers for each event, but that seems a bit ... inefficient. Is there a visualiser, or a property that I can check that will tell me whether these events have fired? EDIT The reason I want to know this is that I am overriding the ViewState property of a custom control, and the viewstate disappears at some point, and I'd like to know at which point in the page lifecycle it is being overriden.
