• Can empathy be configured to stay updated will a full conversation?

  The Google Talk web app and Android app will always update themselves with all messages sent from all clients and I was wondering if Empathy can be configured to do this. For example, if I start a conversation on my phone and then change to my PC an use the web app, all the messages I sent will show up in the IM window on the PC even though I sent them when I was on my phone. Empathy does not behave this way. It only shows the IMs that occurred when using Empathy. If Empathy cannot do this, is there another client that can?

• Is it worth it to learn some programming before college?

  I'm in my last year of highschool and I am very interested in programming, the thing is I don't know if it could be worth it to start learning programming now, im afraid that when I get to college they might just teach all I might have learned in a few classes making a waste the time spent on learning that before college. Right now I'm on my last year of highschool and I know absolutely nothing about programming. There are other similar questions where people answer saying it is good to learn beforehand, but I doubt their situation might be like mine, maybe they had much more time to learn programming (as if they were not on their last year of highschool) before college so they could learn some serious skills, besides they say they already know at least the basics about a language, instead, I know nothing and I have no idea how much could I learn this year. • Wubi 12.04 boot error message

  Im having a boot problem with my Wubi 12.04 system. When Ubuntu starts to boot up, a message will appear in my screen and it's something like: T#s..... does not exist Sorry, I couldn't read all the message. Then another message pop-out after Ubuntu loading screen this time the message is this: Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems: -Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline) -check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?) -check root= (did the system wait for the right device?) -missing module (cat /proc/module: ls /dev) ALERT! /dev/disk/by/by_uuid/EODC2345DC231576 does not exist. • 12.04 on Pentium Dual Core with 1GB or ram running slow

  hey i have a Lenovo Thinkpad Laptop with Ubuntu 12.04 installed. It runs slow. I tried "System profiler and Benchmark" to test the computer. but the application quits and closes after the first few benchmark test. before it even gets to the other tests. So i tried "Hardinfo" that installed on the Puppy Linux live cd. that did the same thing (the apps look just a like). the memory usage isnt the problem on this pc. its the cpu processes. just running the "system profiler" app that comes with ubuntu uses about 34% on each core, default with nothing running its 5-10% on each core. i cant really find what the deal is other than that ubuntu is a cpu hog. so im testing unity2D at the moment to see how it goes. if you have any other suggestions, feel free to answer this question. thanks

• Faulty memtest result

  I've been a bit suspicious about my RAM lately. They seem not work like i expect them to. For instance i run a lot of Virtual Test Environments in VMware Workstation and lately Ubuntu starts to lag just running 4 virtual machines each dedicated 512 MB. BTW im having 6GB memory on my laptop. This did not use to be a problem for me on my last laptop that even had a lot lower CPU resources. So i was led to try a memtest after reading some websites about RAM testing. So i did a memtest overnight but when i woke up this morning i was just looping and i could not Exit or do anything. It was just looping the number of errors besides test 7 which you can see in the lower right part of the screenshot. Can anyone interpret this screenshot for me? Do i have a faulty set of RAMs?

• Memory Management/Embedded Management in C

  Im wondering if there is a set or a few good books/Tutorials/Etc.. that go into Memory Management/Allocation Specifically (or at least have a good dedicated section to it) when it comes to C. This is more for me learning Embedded and trying to keep Size down. I've read and Learned C fine, and the "standard" Learning books. However most of the books don't spend a huge amount of time (Understandably since C is pretty huge in general) going into the Finer details about whats going on Down Under.   Hi to every one. I have a question regarding the real value of having NCSA's certifications. Today I reach their site and I easily passed the JavaScript certification within minutes, but I never reach questions related to Literal Javascript Notation (Json), closures or browser specific apis. This facts let me to doubt a bit of the real value of the test (and the proper certification you can have if you pay them $34), but maybe Im wrong and just earned a respected certification within the States for easy questions... in wich case I can spend some time doing other certifications on the same site. Did you have an NCSA certification and think is worth having it in your resume, or you know of a better certification program? thanks in advance, and looking forward to see your considerations.

• Sound notification over SSH

  I just switched from the Konversation IRC client to the terminal based IRSSI. I'm starting IRSSI on a remote machine using GNU screen + SSH. I do not get any sound notification on new messages, which means that I've to check out IRSSI once in a while for new messages. That's not really productive, so I'm looking for an application / script that plays a sound (preferably /usr/share/sounds/KDE-Im-Irc-Event.ogg and not the annoying beep) on my machine if there is any activity. It would be great if I can disable the notification for certain channels. Or, if that's not possible, some sort of notification via libnotify, thus making it available to GNOME and KDE.

• do you still get a bounce in google analytics if all the linked pages/content is loaded dyanmicly?

  Google analytics describes a bounce as a user that visits and leaves before after their first page. But if your site is a one page site, with content loaded dynamicly using javascript you could have a user one your site go through loads of info, text images but would that still count as a bounce ? Or once they click on an a-tag even if it is <a href="#"> can google analytics see that ? (im aware of click tracking in analytics) but i was wandering if google picks up these clicks by default..

• How to to let Google know about dynamic content?

  Im looking for the best practice to let Google know about a vast number of dynamically created content. Let's say (I mean - dream) that I'm Facebook, and I want to let Google to index all the users' posts. Sitemap.xml may be the answer for this but they are limited to 50,000 URLs in each site map. I know that I can create 500 sitemaps and create a sitemap for sitemaps, but they are also limited, 25,000,000 URLS sounds quite enough at the moment, but could cause problems in the future. I.E - stackoverflow already has 3 Million posts, probably sitemap is not the solution for them. Creating a page with paging, and links to all the dynamic data. i guess this is what stackoverflow did by creating this page here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions So I think that Option 2 is the answer, but it seems to me that sitemaps might have some added value. So what should i do?

  I'm building myself a nice setup with a massive amount of screen real estate. Since I had/have problems with video drivers in the past. I'm asking for advise here first. I want to connect at least six screens. What are the best options? What are the pitfalls? I preferably would not like to use closed binary blob drivers. usecase scenario: I'm writing a piece of software that has to interact with other systems. I would like to be able to see all of those systems, my code, lots of log files and documentation without the need to swap windows/screens. To just better see what im doing.

• Are Languages pretty much "stable" for now?

  Pardon the odd question, but I looked recently at a sort of "timeline" of Programming Languages and while alot has changed in the past 5-10 years and what has grown, there are alot of languages that have pretty much "stayed" the same in their same niche/use. Like for Example C.....we don't really ever see much languages being developed (Correct me if im wrong) to try to Unseat C, however there are alot of languages that try to do Similar things (Look at all the SQL/No-SQL languages) Scripting Languages, etc... Is there a reason for this? Or is it just because C does what C does so well.....that there isn't really a need?

  sorry im absolutly linux beginner.... i bought a packhard bell netbook dots with Limpus.did not get along with limpus so wanted to install ubuntu. netbook: 2 GB RAM intel Atom N2600, intel graphics Media Accelerator 3600 I over installled ubuntu 12.10 (desktop version) like in the instruction (isofile over USB). Installation went fine. No problems. when starting after installation alot of text is coming.....starting xyz....with alot of okays at the end of line but nothing happends: ends with #Starting CPU interrups balancing daemon, stopping anachronics cron and blinking cursor... was reading in this forum, tried to do some things like #recoverymode# and nomodeset... but did not work or where do i get this graphic drivers from. Packard bell just offers windows drivers.and how do i install them? maybe its a completely diffrent cause for this? Thanks alot

• Google Places seo?

  Im familiar with seo and getting higher google listings but for allot of services google has recently been making there search results (were applicable) much more location orientated.. for instance searching for a "accountant in london" or "accountancy firm london" will through return the first half of page 1 as google places listings, then under about 6 of these you will get your normal search results so somone who used to rank #1 on page 1 now will rank effectily #7. What i was wandering is that i cant see any reasons as to why the company that rank high in the places results get there, often they are not high up in the search results. Is there a way to optimise on or offsite to rise up the google places listings in your city ?
