• Basic question about request queues in IIS / ASP.Net

  I have an ASP.Net application running under IIS 6. A simple page has two radio buttons and a submit button. If I select radio button "A" and submit the page, a lengthy PDF file is generated, which takes about a minute to build. If I select radio button "B", a small PDF is generated. (In both cases the PDF is written out to the Response object and it opens in my browser.) If I select radio button "A" and submit, then hit the red X in my browser to stop the current request, then select radio button "B" and resubmit, the page still takes a long time to process my request. No doubt my first request is still being processed on the server, but I was wondering how IIS and/or ASP.Net are queuing my requests so that fair server use is guaranteed among all users. Am I roughly correct in assuming something like this happens, and if so, how is it done?

  Hello! Recently I wrote the algorithm to quantize an RGB image. Every pixel is represented by an (R,G,B) vector, and quantization codebook is a couple of 3-dimensional vectors. Every pixel of the image needs to be mapped to (say, "replaced by") the codebook pixel closest in terms of euclidean distance (more exactly, squared euclidean).   I'm trying to figure out how to map against a simple read-only property and have that property fire when I save to the database. A contrived example should make this more clear. First, a simple table: meta = MetaData() foo_table = Table('foo', meta, Column('id', String(3), primary_key=True), Column('description', String(64), nullable=False), Column('calculated_value', Integer, nullable=False), ) What I want to do is set up a class with a read-only property that will insert into the calculated_value column for me when I call session.commit()... import datetime def Foo(object): def __init__(self, id, description): self.id = id self.description = description @property def calculated_value(self): self._calculated_value = datetime.datetime.now().second + 10 return self._calculated_value According to the sqlalchemy docs, I think I am supposed to map this like so: mapper(Foo, foo_table, properties = { 'calculated_value' : synonym('_calculated_value', map_column=True) }) The problem with this is that _calculated_value is None until you access the calculated_value property. It appears that SQLAlchemy is not calling the property on insertion into the database, so I'm getting a None value instead. What is the correct way to map this so that the result of the "calculated_value" property is inserted into the foo table's "calculated_value" column?

• How to name an event handler of a private variable in Vb.Net following FxCop rules and Vb.Net standa

  Hello, On one side, in Vb.Net when you add an event handler to an object the created method is named: <NameOfTheObject>_<NameOfTheMethod>. As I like to have consistent syntax I always follow this rule when creating event handlers by hand. On the other side when I create private variables I prefix them with m_ as this is a common thing used by the community, in C# people use to put _ at the beginning of a variable but this is no CLS compliant. At the end, when I create event handlers for events raised by private variables I end with Subs like m_myVariable_MyEvent. Code Analysis (Fx Cop) is complainig about this way of naming because the method does not start with uppercase and because the _, so the question is: What naming standards do you follow when creating event handlers by hand that follow the Fxcop rules if any? • MySQL JDBC date issues with database server in different timezone

  I have a database server in "Europe/London" time zone and my web server in "Europe/Brussels". Since it is summer time now my application server has a 2 hour difference. I created a test to reproduce my issue: Query q = JPA.em().createNativeQuery("SELECT UNIX_TIMESTAMP(startDateTime) FROM `Event` WHERE `id` =574"); BigInteger unix = (BigInteger) q.getSingleResult(); System.out.println(unix + "000 UNIX_TIMESTAMP to BigInteger"); Query q2 = JPA.em().createNativeQuery("SELECT startDateTime FROM `Event` WHERE `id` =574"); Timestamp o = (Timestamp) q2.getSingleResult(); System.out.println(o.getTime() + " Timestamp"); The startDateTime column is defined as 'datetime' (but same issue with 'timestamp') The output I am getting is this: 1340291591000 UNIX_TIMESTAMP to BigInteger 1340284391000 Timestamp Reading java date objects results in a shift in time zone, how do I fix this? I would expect the jdbc driver to just set the "unix time" value it gets from the server in the Date object. (a proper solution should work with any timezone combination, not only for db in GMT)

• Link objects as fields in UML diagram

  I'm trying to generate a diagram for a design document. I've generated a class diagram in VS. At the moment it's just a bunch of unconnected boxes as there isn't any inheritance going on. It feels like it would be more useful if I could show how the objects interact through properties and parameters. As an example, a Boy class has a method Kiss which takes a Girl object. How can I show that Boy and Girl interact by connecting this in the diagram? Is there a notation for this in UML? Or is there another type of diagram that shows this? Can I make VS draw this connection for me somehow? Or is this a silly/useless idea? It just doesn't feel like a proper diagram unless it's got some lines on it somewhere :)

• Correctly parsing an ATOM feed

  I currently have setup a Python script that uses feedparser to read a feed and parse it. However, I have recently come across a problem with the date parsing. The feed I am reading contains <modified>2010-05-05T24:17:54Z</modified> - which comes up in Python as a datetime object - 2010-05-06 00:17:54. Notice the discrepancy: the feed entry was modified on the 5th of may, while python reads it as the 6th. So the question is why this is happening. Is the ATOM feed (that is, the one who created the feed) wrong by putting the time as 24:17:54, or is my python script wrong in the way it treats it. And can I solve this?

  Hello, I'm currently working on an application where I need to load data from an SQL database and then assign the retrieved values into the properties of an object. I'm doing this by using reflection since the property names and column names are the same. However, many of the properties are using a custom struct type that is basically a currency wrapper for the decimal type. I have defined an implicit conversion in my struct: public static implicit operator Currency(decimal d) { return new Currency(d); } This works fine when I use it in code. However, when I have this: foreach (PropertyInfo p in props) { p.SetValue(this, table.Rows[0][p.Name], null); } It throws an ArgumentException stating that it cannot convert from System.Decimal to Currency. I'm confused since it works fine in any other circumstance.

• Model Binding to a List using non-sequential indexes. Can I access the index later?

  I'm following Phil's great tutorial on model binding to a list. I use input names like this: book[5804].title book[5804].author book[1234].title book[1234].author This works well and the data gets back to the model just fine, populating a list of books. What I'm looking for is a way to get access in the model to the index that was used to send the books. I'd like to get that number, "5804." This is because the index is of semantic importance. If I can access it, it saves me from setting another property on the object (book ID). Is there a way to see, either on the FormCollection or on the model after UpdateModel is called, what the index was when it was sent up?

So does this operator exist in Java just because it existed in C++?

  I'm trying to understand how to streamline the process of inserting a record if none exists or updating a record if it already exists. I'm not using stored procedures, although maybe that would be the most efficient way of doing this. The actual scenario in which this is necessary is saving a user preference/setting to my SettingsUser table. In MS Access I would typically pull a DAO recordset looking for the specified setting. If the recordset comes back empty then I know I need to add a new record which I can do with the same recordset object. On the other hand, if it isn't empty, I can just update the setting's value right away. In theory, this is only two database operations. What is the recommended way of doing this in .NET?

This quotea may be increased by changing the MaxStringContentLength property on the XmlDictionaryReaderQuotas object used when creating the XML reader" In the one of my orchestrations that consumes a wcf webservice (stacktrace indicates the receive shape is where the issue is), It is likely that the response is very large. looking at some of the other questions with this error message the solution is to change a WCF bindings setting in the configuration file. However I can't find these configuration settings when I'm using biztalk. They don't seem to be generated anywhere, should I be trying to add them to BTSNTSVc.exe.config. Any suggestions welcome.

May I know How I can manipulate Comment's properties for each row? Any help would be appreciated. I tried in my javascript that for each row rowObject.Comments.FirstName and it did not work.

• Application leaking Strings?

  My .net application does some heavy string loading/manipulation and unfortunately the memory consumption keeps rising and rising and when looking at it with a profiler I see alot of unreleased string instances. Now at one point of time or another I do need all objects t hat do have these string fields, but once done, I could get rid of e.g. the half of it and I Dispose() and set the instances to null, but the Garbage Collector does not to pick that up.. they remain in memory (even after half an hour after disposing etc). Now how do I get properly rid of unneeded strings/object instances in order to release them? They are nowhere referenced anymore (afaik) but e.g. aspose's memory profiler says their distance to the gc's root is '3'?

• AesCryptoServiceProvider not part of SymmetricAlgorithm?

  I have a quick little app that steps through the possible symmetric encryption methods. I get them with the following line: private static List<Type> GetAlgorithmTypes { get { return Assembly.GetAssembly(typeof(SymmetricAlgorithm)).GetTypes().Where( type => type.IsSubclassOf(typeof(SymmetricAlgorithm))).ToList(); } } As you can see when i run this, AesCryptoServiceProvider is not a member of this group, even though it inherits from AES, which does belong to SymmetricAlgorithm and shows up in my list. This wouldn't be so much of a problem, i can manually add the provider in the group if i have too, but then if i try to retrieve this type by its name: Type t = Type.GetType("System.Security.Cryptography.AesCryptoServiceProvider"); i get a null object for AesCryptoServiceProvider, but not for any of the other items in the group. This is really strange, and i'm wondering if anyone has any ideas. It's kinda making me need to use tripleDES because of this (since my machines are all running the FIPS compliance requirement). • Model objects versions in Django

  Hi I'm building an e-commerce website. I have a Product and Order models. It's possible that a customer order a product and then the admin change its price or other fields before the customer actually get it. A possible solution is to add a 'version' field to the Product model. When the admin update a product field I'll add a timestamp and create a new object instead of updating the old one. An Order will have a reference to a specific product version. Does this make sense? Will overriding the Product Save method be sufficient to make it work? Thanks

• How to handle JPA annotations for a pointer to a generic interface

  I have a generic class that is also a mapped super class that has a private field that holds a pointer to another object of the same type: @MappedSuperclass public abstract class MyClass<T extends MyIfc<T>> implements MyIfc<T> { @OneToOne() @JoinColumn(name = "previous", nullable = true) private T previous; ... } My problem is that Eclipse is showing an error in the file at the OneToOne "Target Entity "T" for previous is not an Entity." All of the implementations of MyIfc are, in fact, Entities. I should also add that each concrete implementation that inherit from MyClass uses a different value for T (because T is itself) so I can't use the "targetEntity" attribute. I guess if there is no answer then I'll have to move this JPA annotation to all the concrete subclasses of MyClass. It just seems like JPA/Hibernate should be smart enough to know it'll all work out at run-time. Makes me wonder if I should just ignore this error somehow.
