  How do you manage your sql server database build/deploy/migrate for visual studio projects? We have a product that includes a reasonable database part (~100 tables, ~500 procs/functions/views), so we need to be able to deploy new databases of the current version as well as upgrade older databases up to the current version. Currently we maintain separate scripts for creation of new databases and migration between versions. Clearly not ideal, but how is anyone else dealing with this? This is complicated for us by having many customers who each have their own db instance, rather than say just having dev/test/live instances on our own web servers, but the processes around managing dev/test/live for others must be similar.

• Selecting random top 3 listings per shop for a range of active advertising shops

  I’m trying to display a list of shops each with 3 random items from their shop, if they have 3 or more listings, that are actively advertising. I have 3 tables: one for the shops – “Shops”, one for the listings – “Listings” and one that tracks active advertisers – “AdShops”. Using the below statement, the listings returned are random however I’m not getting exactly 3 listings (rows) returned per shop. • Attaching catalog with SQL Authentication credentials attaches it as Read-Only

  Hello, As part of our product's installation process, a database is attached to the server. We use EXEC sp_attach_db in order to attach it to MSSQL. The problem occures when we try to attach it with "SQL Authentication" connection string - the database is attached to the server as read-only, thus preventing any write access from being performed This is driving us nuts... it's working just fine with Windows Authentication, and the only difference is the connection string... I tried googling for it but no mention for such a scenario is found. Any ideas anyone? It's important to mention that the MDF/LDF physical files are not set with "ReadOnly" attribute, so this is not the problem.

But due to initial stages and work pressure as well i m not able to implement it yet. What can i do to start using schema with default permissions as that of dbo.   I have an application that is deployed on tomcat on server A and sends queries to a huge variety of SQL Server databases on an server B. I am concerned that my application could overload this SQL Server database server and would like some way to preventing it making requests to connect to any database on that server if some arbitrary number of connections were already in existence and unclosed. I am looking at using connection pooling but am under the impression that this will only pool connections to a specific database on the SQL Server server, I want to control the total of these combined connections that will occur to many different databases (incidentally I can only find out the names of individual db's dynamically as they change day to day). Will connection pooling take care of this for me, are am I looking at this from the wrong perspective? I have no access to the configuration of the SQL Server server. Links to tutorials or working examples of your suggested solution are most welcome!

  I'm trying to create a regex that will look for french words whether a user specifies the accented characters or not. So if the the user has searched for "déclaré" but types in declare instead I would like to be able to match the text still. I'm having difficulty making this more dynamic so that it can be matched on any french word... Closest example from another user from a different post was: d[eèéê]cl[aàáâ]r[eèéê] Is it even possible to write a regex for something like this? Any advice would be much appreciated.

• Distinct or group by on some columns but not others

  I have a view that I'm trying to filter with something similar to DISTINCT on some columns but not others. I have a view like this: Name LastName Zip Street1 HouseholdID (may not be unique because it may have multiple addresses -- think of it in the logical sense as grouping persons but not physical locations; If you lookup HouseholdID 4130, you may get two rows.. or more, because the person may have mutiple mailing locations) City State I need to pull all those columns but filter on LastName,Zip, and Street1. Here's the fun part: The filter is arbitrary -- meaning I don't care which one of the duplicates goes away. This is for a mail out type thing and the other information is not used for any other reason than than to look up a specific person if needed (I have no idea why). So.. given one of the records, you can easily figure out the removed ones. As it stands now, my Sql-Fu fails me and I'm filtering in C# which is incredibly slow and is pretty much a foreach that starts with an empty list and adds the row in if the combined last name, zip, and street aren't are not in the list. I feel like I'm missing a simple / basic part of SQL that I should be understanding.

  Ok I have a table in my MSSQL database that stores comments. My desire is to be able to page though the records using [Back],[Next], page numbers & [Last] buttons in my datalist. I figured the most efficient way was to use a stored procedure that only returns a certain number of rows within a partcular range. In other words I want to return the total number of rows in my first select statement i.e WITH tmp AS ( SELECT comments.*, ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY dateposted ASC) AS Row FROM comments WHERE (comments.postid = @postid)) set @TotalRows = @@rowcount @@rowcount doesnt work and raises an error.I also cant get count.* to work either. Is there another way to get the total amount of rows or is my approach doomed.

• C# Threading and Sql Connections

  I have a method that attempts to update a sql server database in an ASP.NET application. If the update fails, it catches the exception and then queues the update in MSMQ, and then spins up a new thread that will later de-queue the pending update and try again. When the thread starts, it fails to open a database connection because it is attempting to connect using Network Service as the login. The sql connection is using Windows Authentication, and will work outside of the thread. If I put a breakpoint in the code that executes inside the new thread and check the Thread.CurrentPrincipal, it shows the Identity as being the correct user. Why is the sql connection attempting to be opened by the Network Service account? I can elaborate further is necessary. Thanks.

Now what happens is the query takes an EXTREMELY long time to execute, presumably because the subquery is being executed over each and every row in the parent query. However, I am finding no feasible means of doing this any other way. Oh great SQL wizards, please advise. I really need a way of doing this all in SQL, which I will be using in SSRS.

  There is some software I want to write a plugin for. The software includes some sample plugins. I want to create a new fresh project but I want to use one of the sample plugin vsproj's project settings as a template. It doesn't seem very clear on how to do this. If I do "New Project From Existing Code" that only imports the cpp, h, etc files into the new project. Right now the only way I can see to copy a sample projects settings is to open two instances of VS2005 next to each other and simply mimic the settings... Surely there is a built in method of doing this?

• How do I view Visual Studio BuildLog.htm files without cutting and pasting into an external browser

  This may or may not be specific to VS2005 (as that is the version I'm referring to for this question). I find often the case is that I see this in the Output panel inside Visual Studio 2>Build log was saved at "file://c:\\vsdll_example\MyExecRefsDll\Debug\BuildLog.htm" Now, since that looks and smells like a URL, I would have thought that I could simply left mouse click on it, or left mouse double-click on it, and a browser window of some sort would be displayed. No, that doesn't work. So, to view it, I have to cut and paste the "file://bla/bla/bla" part into an external window. Is there a way to set up Visual Studio to allow me to browse to that file directly, or view it inside Visual Studio IDE, or something to that effect, without the extra fiddling with cutting and pasting? Or is there some type of keybinding I'm not aware of? Thanks, bg

So I've tried this: UPDATE request SET building_id = ( SELECT bu.building_id FROM building bu INNER JOIN lot lo ON bu.lot_id=lo.lot_id WHERE lo.lot_code = request.lot_code ); But I'm getting this error: Subquery returned more than 1 value. This is not permitted when the subquery follows =, !=, <, <= , , = or when the subquery is used as an expression. Is it due to wrong syntax? The data model allows more than one building per lot but actual data doesn't contain such cases so there should be at most one building_id per lot_code.

  I have had an issue with our replication process and would like to salvage some data. I have a process in place where I will connect to each subscriber before flagging them for reinitialization and I will run the below to pull any data they may have entered in during the "dark time". I am pretty sure this will work in a vanilla palace. What I am unsure of is whether the Global Temporary Table will persist through DB Replication. To be clear, I am not trying to Replicate the TempTable, I just want to make sure it will still exist at the local DB after the Replication so I may run the INSERT from it. Thoughts?
