• Rebuilding system databases in 2008 R2

  All my attempts so far to rebuild the system databases in 2008 R2 has failed. I first tried to run setup from below path: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Release But above turns out to be the 2008 setup program, not 2008R2 setup; even though I have no 2008 instanced installed (I have only R2 instances installed). Apparently, the 2008 setup program does a version check of the instance to be rebuilt and since it is > 10.50.0, the rebuild fails. Books Online for R2 the section...(read more)

  Is there a phrase or word to describe an algorithim or programme is complete in that given any value for its arguments there is a defined outcome? i.e. all the ramifications have been considered whatever the context? A simple example would be the below function: function returns string get_item_type(int type_no) { if(type_no < 10) return "hockey stick" else if (type_no < 20) return "bulldozer" else return "unknown" } (excuse the dismal pseudo code) No matter what number is supplied all possibiblites are catered for. My question is: is there a word to fill the blank here: "get_item_type() is ______ complete" ? (The answer is not Turing Complete - that is something quite different - but I annoyingly always think of something as "Turing Complete" when I am thinking of the above).

• GZipped Images - Is It Worth?

  Most image formats are already compressed. But in fact, if I take an image and compress it [gzipping it], and then I compare the compressed one to the uncompressed one, there is a difference in size, even though not such a dramatic difference. The question is: is it worth gzipping images? the content size flushed down to the client's browser will be smaller, but there will be some client overhead when de-gzipping it. Please advise.

• Triple monitors on hybrid video system GeForce+Intel

  I use Lenovo Ideapad Z580A with hybrid video: GeForce+Intel with Ubuntu 12.10 x64 Ukrainian. It has internal display and two outputs: HDMI and VGA. When I connect third display to VGA all displays go black. Pressing alt+backspace and login causes output to two displays: internal and VGA. System Settings - Displays (or monitors - I have Ukrainian interface) shows three displays: two are on, one (DVI) is off. Turning DVI on and pressing apply causes an error: Can not set configuration of controller CRTC 65. BIOS setting is Optimus (two video cards). Driver for GeForce is Nouveau. With best regards. • Some menus are in Chinese/Japanese!

  Yesterday I shutdown my computer and today when I powered it on and logged in to 12.04, certain strings are in Japanese/Chinese (I don't know how to differentiate between the two). The strings are: Applications, places menu selector in my panel. Under 'places', the 'Home folder', 'Desktop', 'Computer'. The menus in VLC! Certain applications like 'sound converter', etc. How can I change everything back to English? I'm using Gnome classic in Ubuntu 12.04.

• What is the/Is there a right way to tell management that our code sucks?

  Our code is bad. It might not have always been considered bad, but it is bad and is only going downhill. I started fresh out of college less than a year ago, and many of the things in our code puzzle me beyond belief. At first I figured that as the new guy I should keep my mouth shut until I learned a little more about our code base, but I've seen plenty to know that it's bad. Some of the highlights: We still use frames (try getting something out of a querystring, almost impossible) VBScript Source Safe We 'use' .NET - by that I mean we have .net wrappers that call COM DLLs making it almost impossible to debug easily Everything is basically one giant function Code is not maintainable. Each page has multiple files that are created every time a new page is made. The main page basically does Response.Write() a bunch of times to render the HTML (runat="server"? no way). After that there can be a lot of logic on the client side (VBScript), and finally the page submits to itself (often time storing many things in hidden fields) where it then posts to a processing page which can do things such as save the data to the database. The specifications we get are laughable. Often times they call for things like "auto-populate field X with either field Y or field Z" with no indication of when to choose field Y or field Z. I'm sure some of this is a result of not being employed at a software company, but I feel as if people writing software should at least care about the quality of their code. I can't even imagine that if I were to bring something up that anything would be done soon, as there is a large deadline looming, but we are continuing to write bad code and use bad practices. What can I do? How do I even bring these issues up? 75% of my team agree with me and have brought up these issues in the past, yet nothing gets changed.

• dbus error on 14.04 after system is left idle for a few hours

  I did a clean install of 14.04 on a crucial M4 64gb ssd. The system boots in less than 30 seconds now! but.. when I leave it idle for a few hours and log back in nothing works .. if I do a simple command like df ..I get a dbus error message. I also have a toshiba sata disk mounted for general storage since the ssd is so small .. nothing appears to be damaged when I reboot but it is extremely annoying .. any ideas on how to correct this will be appreciated.

  I'm learning Lisp, and I've just gotten to let, which I don't quite understand (the implementation of). A common definition for it is given in terms of lambda as a macro. However, nowhere have I seen that let must be implemented as a macro or in terms of lambda. Is it possible to define let without using a macro or lambda? I know it can be implemented as a primitive, but I want to know whether it can be implemented in Lisp without creating a macro -- by creating a special form or a function.

• The system is running in low graphics mode error before ubuntu gets installed

  I am using Bootable USB for installing Ubuntu with Windows 8.1. I have put pendrive and then booting my USB. When it shows me to try Ubuntu or install Ubuntu. Then I press Try ubuntu and then it says" "The system is running in low graphics mode". Then I press Ok. Then it shows 4 options. Then again I click Ok. Then it shows a black screen and nothing happens. I have tried all possible answers provided in AU. What should I do? Please help. I am using Windows 8.1 with dedicated graphic card (Video card - AMD Radeon HD 8670M). Installing 12.04 LTS with pre-installe Windows 8.1 in a Dell Laptop 3537 inspiron.

• A* PathFinding Not Consistent

  I just started trying to implement a basic A* algorithm in my 2D tile based game. All of the nodes are tiles on the map, represented by a struct. I believe I understand A* on paper, as I've gone through some pseudo code, but I'm running into problems with the actual implementation. I've double and tripled checked my node graph, and it is correct, so I believe the issue to be with my algorithm. This issue is, that with the enemy still, and the player moving around, the path finding function will write "No Path" an astounding amount of times and only every so often write "Path Found". Which seems like its inconsistent.   I design and implement languages, that can range from object notations to markup languages. In many cases I have considered restrictions in favor of sanity (common knowledge), like in the case of control characters in identifiers. There are two consequences to consider before doing this: It takes extra computation It narrows liberty I'm interested to learn how developers think of decisions like this. As you may know Microsoft C# is very open on the contrary. If you really want to prefix your integer as Long with 'l' instead of 'L' and so risk other developers of confusing '1' and 'l', no problem. If you want to name your variables in non-latin script so they will contrast with C#'s latin keywords, no problem. Or if you want to distribute a string over multiple lines and so break a series of indentation, no problem. It is cheap to ensure consistency with restrictions and this makes it tempting to implement. But in the case of disallowing non-latin characters (concerning the second example), it means a discredit to Unicode, because one would not take full advantage of its capacity.

Instead, other terms are used, like "injection point" which don't denote the object containing the injected object. And nothing I can think of sounds right, except maybe "injection target" - but I have never read it anywhere. Is there a single word or a simple expression for it, or is it like the "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named" from a recent fantasy book series?

It sort of feels like the inverse of map. • Ubuntu 12.04 - Read only file system+computer crash/freezes after an update that got interupted

  I've run into an error with Ubuntu while I was updating it. During the update my power went out and interrupted the update. When I finally got power and booted my computer, I received an error, telling me to remount ./ and basically told me I could press S to skip or F to fix. (I forgot exactly what it said) but anyways, I originally pressed F to fix, but that didn't solve the problem, so then I went into the terminal and I tried to remount that way, but I couldn't execute because it's stuck in "file system read only." Sorry, my description of the problem is dull. I'm debating on just reinstalling, but I have a ton of files I would like to keep, about 3+ years worth of websites I've built. Is there a proper way to fix this?

• How to name a clamp function that only clamps from one side?

  Clamp() is a function that ensures that provided variable is in provided range. You can find such function in .NET, in Unity, and probably anywhere. While it is useful, I often need to clamp my value from one side only. For example, to ensure that float is always non-negative or always positive (like radius value from inspector). I used names ClampFromAbove() and ClampFromBelow(), but I wonder if such names is good or even grammatically valid in programming-English. Also, it probably make sense to distinguish non-negative case too. How'd you name such function? Something like EnsureNonNegative()? My intention is creating pair of extension methods and use them like this: var normalizedRadius = originalRadius.ClampFromBelow(0.0001); var distance = someVector.Magnitude.ClampFromAbove(maxDistance);

• Ubuntu 13.04 not detecting operating system Windows 8

  I have a Samsung NP740U3E with pre-installed Windows 8 (boots with UEFI). I installed Ubuntu 13.04 without problems. Later, Windows 8 did a BIOS update which messed up everything, nothing would boot. I recovered everything and went back to fabric settings. Now Windows 8 works fine, but when I try to install Ubuntu it does not detect any operating system, so I can`t install Ubuntu alongside Windows. I`ve googled as much as I can, ran a boot-repair, disabled fast- and secure-boot. I have a GPT disc, been looking into gdisk without luck. Here`s my boot-repair summary http://paste.ubuntu.com/5835719/ Is it necessary to convert the GPT disc to MBR? Is it possible to hard-reset the disc "even more" than fabric settings?   I have been programming for over 15 years now. I consider myself a very good programmer, but I understand (like all of us) there are things that I need to work on. One of these things is code repetition when dealing with conditions. I will give a generic sample: if(condition1) { //perform some logic if(condition2) { //perform some logic if(condition3) { //Perform logic } else { //MethodA(param) } } else { //MethodA(param) } } else { //MethodA() } Now, I cannot make it easy by doing the following: if(condition1 && condition2) { } else { } I cannot do this since I need to perform some logic if condition1 is true and before I test condition2. Is there a way to structure if...else blocks to where if you need to call a method in each else blocks, you are not repeating yourself?

  My question may look bit philosophical and nonsense! But I need to know kind of instructions those are not well suitable in high level languages even in c? Or rarely use in the development of software? Like read/write content of CPU registers may useful in debugging programs. And access to cache memory required when developing OS (maybe I am wrong at this point). Is this kind of instruction available languages like Java, Python, C? I also have a second question: And Why all high level languages not having same uniform syntax; at-least same standard library interface name? In python there is and. Or operator is almost same as && and ||. I think Python is developed after C but space indentation is compulsory in Python. Why Python does not use brackets {}. I already know this question going to be highly down-voted.

My memory is that there are some papers on the topic, perhaps for Borland's Quattro (spreadsheet) project and possibly others. • Why do System.IO.Log SequenceNumbers have variable length?

  I'm trying to use the System.IO.Log features to build a recoverable transaction system. I understand it to be implemented on top of the Common Log File System. The usual ARIES approach to write-ahead logging involves persisting log record sequence numbers in places other than the log (for example, in the header of the database page modified by the logged action). Interestingly, the documentation for CLFS says that such sequence numbers are always 64-bit integers. Confusingly, however, the .Net wrapper around those SequenceNumbers can be constructed from a byte[] but not from a UInt64. It's value can also be read as a byte[], but not as a UInt64. Inspecting the implementation of SequenceNumber.GetBytes() reveals that it can in fact return arrays of either 8 or 16 bytes. This raises a few questions: Why do the .Net sequence numbers differ in size from the CLFS sequence numbers? Why are the .Net sequence numbers variable in length? Why would you need 128 bits to represent such a sequence number? It seems like you would truncate the log well before using up a 64-bit address space (16 exbibytes, or around 10^19 bytes, more if you address longer words)? If log sequence numbers are going to be represented as 128 bit integers, why not provide a way to serialize/deserialize them as pairs of UInt64s instead of rather-pointlessly incurring heap allocations for short-lived new byte[]s every time you need to write/read one? Alternatively, why bother making SequenceNumber a value type at all? It seems an odd tradeoff to double the storage overhead of log sequence numbers just so you can have an untruncated log longer than a million terabytes, so I feel like I'm missing something here, or maybe several things. I'd much appreciate it if someone in the know could set me straight.

• Tree Node Checked behavior on a TreeView in Compact Framework 3.5 running on Windows Mobile 6.5

  I have been upgrading an existing .NET Windows Mobile application to use the 3.5 version of the compact framework and to run on Windows Mobile 6.5. I have a form with a TreeView. The TreeView.Checkboxes property is set to true so that each node has a check box. This gives no trouble in all previous versions of Windows Mobile. However, in version 6.5 when you click on a check box it appears to check and then uncheck instantaneously. But it only raises the AfterCheck event once. The only way I can get a check to stick is by double clicking it (which is the wrong behavior). Has anyone seen this behavior? Does anyone know of a workaround for it?
