• What is the best database for my needs?

  I am currently using MS SQL Server 2008 but I'm not sure it it is the best system for this particular task. I have a single table like so: PK_ptA PK_ptB DateInserted LookupColA LookupColB ... LookupColF DataCol (ntext) A common query is SELECT TOP(1000000) DataCol FROM table WHERE LookupColA=x AND LookupColD=y AND LookupColE=z ORDER BY DateInserted DESC The table has about a billion rows with 5 million inserted per day. My main problem with SQL Server is that it isn't too easy to shard or spread out the datafiles. Also, exporting seems to max out at 1000rows per second (about 1MB/s) which seems very slow. Another problem I have is, with SQL Server, if I want to add a new LookupCol the log file grows enormously requiring a large amount of rarely used free space on tap. Are there any obvious better solutions for this problem?

  I have a custom data source which pulls out data form a flat file. The flat file contains a timestamp , source and data. I can use sp_execute to execute a select query against the flat file. I'm currently using 2 stored procedures . - one which runs a select * from flat_file into a temp table - the other which does a select min/max from flat_file grouping by source into another temp file Im using the data retrieved using the stored procedures in a SSRS report Is is possible in a a single stored procedure to retrieve all the rows from the file within a date range and also identify the min/max values for each group retrieved ?e

  I'm trying to send a very long binary integer over UDP (on the order of 200 bits). When I try to use Array's pack method, it complains the string I'm trying to convert is too large.   I am sending UTF-8, japanese text, to my server. It works in Firefox. My access.log and headers are: /ajax/?q=%E6%BC%A2%E5%AD%97 Accept-Charset ISO-8859-1,utf-8;q=0.7,*;q=0.7 Content-Type application/x-www-form-urlencoded; charset=UTF-8 Howeer, in IE8, my access.log says: /ajax/?q=?? For some reason, IE8 is turning my AJAX call into question marks. Why!? I added the scriptCharset and ContentType according to some tutorials, but still no luck. • Clearquest Database Timeout

  I have a tool that is setup to query our Clearquest Database to return information to the user automatically every 9000 milliseconds. I came in today and the connection had timed out over the weekend, I found in the oSession object a "check heartbeat" function, but I'm not sure that is what I want to use to determine if i need to "re-login", I saw a db.timeoutinterval, but I can't seem to find any good reference on how to call it, since the oSession Object doesn't actually call it, and any references in the API guide mention it with regard to actually creating the db using the adminsession object. What "object" do I need to create to access the timeout interval and how? Thank you for the help! Or is it better to use the "check heartbeat function" and will it return a true or false depending on current state of login?

• LDAP filter not being considered

  Hi there. I am performing an LDAP search query in C like so; ldap_search_ext_s(ld, BASEDN, SCOPE, FILTER, attrs, 0, NULL, NULL, NULL, LDAP_NO_LIMIT, &res); My search performs fine except when I try to specify FILTER to be; #define FILTER "uid=*", that is, when I try to run a search for all LDAP entries with a uid. Unfortunately my code just returns the first entry for each result that it finds. So, my code might find 50 results, but will return the first entry 50 times. Can anyone suspect what I might be doing wrong here? EDIT: I am stepping through my results like so: for (msg = ldap_first_message(ld, res); msg != NULL; msg = ldap_next_message(ld, msg)) Any help is really appreciated. Ricky.

• checkins/recent not returning comments or even counts of comments

  My application has been using the checkins/recent endpoint to show where all the current users friends are currently at and I had included a button the user could press to comment on a checkin. The button used to have the comment count on it until recently. It seems the checkins/recent endpoint no longer returns comments or even a comment count for those checkins. I would have to query each checkin in order to get the comment count which adds to the data usage not to mention API usage counts. Is there another way to do this that I'm not seeing? Could you please at least put the comment count back? You have the photo information, why not comments? Thanks

• Why does IIS not support chunked transfer encoding?

  I am making an HTTP connection to an IIS web server and sending a POST request with the data encoded using Transfer-Encoding: chunked. When I do this, IIS simply closes the connection, with no error message or status code. According to the HTTP 1.1 spec, All HTTP/1.1 applications MUST be able to receive and decode the "chunked" transfer-coding so I don't understand why it's (a) not handling that encoding and (b) it's not sending back a status code. If I change the request to send the Content-Length rather than Transfer-Encoding, the query succeeds, but that's not always possible. When I try the same thing against Apache, I get a "411 Length required" status and a message saying "chunked Transfer-Encoding forbidden". Why do these servers not support this encoding?

  I have some data I am querying. The table is composed of two columns - a unique ID, and a value. I would like to count the number of times each unique value appears (which can easily be done with a COUNT and GROUP BY), but I then want to be able to count that. So, I would like to see how many items appear twice, three times, etc. So for the following data (ID, val)... 1, 2 2, 2 3, 1 4, 2 5, 1 6, 7 7, 1 The intermediate step would be (val, count)... 1, 3 2, 3 7, 1 And I would like to have(count_from_above, new_count)... 3, 2 -- since three appears twice in the previous table 1, 1 -- since one appears once in the previous table Is there any query which can do that? If it helps, I'm working with Postgres. Thanks!

Tables consist of: Table Movies ID Name Year Rating Runtime Table Con_MoviesToGenres MovieID GenreID Table Con_MovieToUser MovieID UserID Grade I'm trying to build a SELECT query to return 5 most recommended movies for a specific movie. Bearing in mind, I want to integrate in some way, similar genres, highest grades & movie Rating (so you want be recommended an R rated movie for a PG rated movie, unless it's really recommended in every other aspect). Also, if movie matches more than one genre, it will increase its recommendation ratio. Bonus: If a user gives a low grade to a movie - it will lose recommendation ratio.

I am hopeless with regex, I would appreciate any pointers on how to write this (lookahead parameters?) and any differences between regex on different platforms (eg the C# .NET Regex versus Grep vs Perl) that might be relevant here. • Update/Increment a single column on multiple rows at once

  I'm trying to add rows to a column, keeping the order of the newest column set to one, and all other rows counting up from there. In this case, I add a new row with order=0, then use this query to update all the rows by one. "UPDATE favorits SET order = order+1" However, what happens is that all the rows are updated to the same value. I get a stack of favorites, all with order 6 for example, when it should be one with 1, the next with 2 and so on. How do I update these rows in a way that orders them the way they should be?   Hello, I was about to develop iphone app and I want suggestion from the expert since I am totally newbie in it. I have one classified website which is written in php and mysql. What I want to create is Iphone app which can view those classifieds. There will be no complicated function at first version. It will be have different categories and query and display according to the category. And if there's new classified ad, they will get push notification. What I want to know is, what should i go with ? Native or using phonegap ? Is phonegap supports push notification ? Is native app can just get the results through mysql ? or do i need to change it to sql lite ? Any speed different between native and phone gap ? Any advantages and disadvantages ? Thanks.

• Is there any er diagram tool in Windows that I can use to connect to a MySQL 4.1 database in Unix?

  I have a few test databases in some Unix SUSE 8 servers and initially the plan was to find some tools which can directly create the ERD straight from the server until someone told me that I can find tools to connect from the Windows PC straight to the Unix MySQL database. So I saw MySQL query analyzer which can do this but unfortunately there are no options to create an ERD. So are there any tools, preferably open source or free which can do this? I've done some basic googling but didn't know what is the exact terms to use to search for this and have so far found nothing useful yet. Updates: I just found out that the latest version of workbench doesn't work MySQL 4.1 Enterprise Edition which is the version that I have! And I try to use fabFORCE DBDesigner but I can't even connect at all using that one :( What can work for this version of MySQL?

• retreving long text (CLOB) using CFQuery

  I am using CFQuery to retrieve the CLOB field from Oracle DB. If the CLOB filed contains the Data less than ~ 8000, then I can see retrieved the value ( the o/p), however If the value in CLOB field size is more than 8000 chars, then its not retrieving the value. in <cfdump> i can see the query retrieved as 'empty String' though the value exists in Oracle DB. I am using the Oracle Driver in CFadim console enabled 'Enable long text retrieval (CLOB).' and 'Enable binary large object retrieval (BLOB). ' set 'Long Text Buffer (chr)' and 'Blob Buffer(bytes) ' values to 6400000 any suggestions to retrieve the full text?

I'm currently at the stage where I have a temporary table that contains all of the records that I want to output to a text file. I have the following line at the end of my SP, it works in PHPMYAdmin's query but it does not work when part of a stored procedure the code is as follows: SELECT * into outfile '../../htdocs/VIP/Temp/temp.txt' from tmp_Menu2; note that tmp_Menu2 is a table that only includes one field of type VARCHAR(1000) Any help would be greathly appreciated.   Hi All, im doing an aplication with Lucene (im a noob with it) and im facing some problems. My aplication uses the Lucene 2.4.0 library with a custom similaraty implementation (the jar is imported) In my app im calculating doqFreq and numDocs manually (im adding the values of all indexes and then i calculate a global value in order to use it on every query) and i want to use that values on a custom similarity implementation in order to calculate a new IDF. The problem is that I dont know how to use (or send) the new doqFreq and numDocs values from my app on that new similarty implementation as I dont want to change lucene´s code apart from this extra class. Any suggestions or examples? I read the docs but i dont now how to aproach this :s Thanks

  I have the following query regarding the scheduling of process threads. a) If my process A has 3 threads then can these threads be scheduled concurrently on the different CPUs in SMP m/c or they will be given time slice on the same cpu. b) Suppose I have two processes A with 3 threads and Process B with 2 threads (all threads are of same priority) then cpu time allocated to each thread (time slice) is dependent on the number of threads in the process or not? Correct me if I am wrong is it so that cpu time is allocated to process which is then shared among its threads i.e. time slice given to process A threads is less than that of Process B threads.
