  • permutations gone wrong

    I have written code to implement an algorithm I found on string permutations. What I have is an arraylist of words ( up to 200) and I need to permutate the list in levels of 5. Basically group the string words in fives and permutated them. What I have takes the first 5 words generates the permutations and ignores the rest of the arraylist? Any ideas appreciated.   • Getting the highest owner of a ToolStripDropDownItem

    I'm currently working on a project in which at one point, the user may right click a button which brings up a contextMenuStrip. I am already able to find the owner accurately from that strip, and manipulate the button clicked as follows: Dim myItem As ToolStripMenuItem = CType(sender, ToolStripMenuItem) Dim cms As ContextMenuStrip = CType(myItem.Owner, ContextMenuStrip) Dim buttonPressed As DataButton = DirectCast(cms.SourceControl, DataButton) But now for the tricky part. Within this contextmenuStrip, I have a DropDown menu with multiple items in there. I would assume you would be able to work your way up the ladder doing casts like above in the manner of ToolStripDrowpDownItem > ToolStripDropDownMenu > ToolStripMenuItem > ContextMenuStrip Unfortunately, when I try to get the sourcecontrol from this menuStrip, it return Nothing. Any ideas on how I can get the button that was pressed from this toolStripMenuItem?   • Access Elements inside a DataTemplate... How to for more than 1 DataTemplate?

    I've got 2 DataTemplates defined for a Listbox Control. 1 Template is for the UnSelected State and the other one is for the Selected State(showing more detail than the UnSelected State). I followed the example here: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/wpfsdk/archive/2007/04/16/how-do-i-programmatically-interact-with-template-generated-elements-part-ii.aspx about how to access the Elements inside the DataTemplates from Code behind. I get it right, but it only finds and returns an element of the UnSelected DataTemplate. But when i search for an element in the Selected DataTemplate i get a NullReferenceException. What could i be doing wrong?

    Hi dear friends, I have a ListBox (MyListBox) on my screen, and a Textbox (MyTextBox). The ListBox is filled with a List(Of T), which are all custom items. Now I try to do this: The ListBox' datasource is the List(Of T). Now when an Item changes I want the textbox to be updated to a particular property of the selected item in my ListBox. In code this means: Me.MyListBox.DisplayMember = "SelectionName" Me.MyListBox.ValueMember = "Id" MyTextbox.DataBindings.Add(New Binding("Text", Me._listOfItems, "SelectedItem.Comment", True, DataSourceUpdateMode.OnPropertyChanged)) Me.MyListBox.DataSource = Me._listOfItems this does not work. But when I bind to SelectedValue instead of SelectedItem it works perfectly. The _listOfItems is declared as this: Dim _listOfItems As List(Of MyItem) = New List(Of MyItem)() Where MyItem is this: public class MyItem { public string SelectionName { get; set; } public int Id { get; set; } public string Comment { get; set; } } I tried overriding the ToString() in MyItem so that it would use that.     Is it possible to use the Clipboard class to grab all the data from the clipboard, like full skype quotes? They use some kind of metadata I think, which is how it knows when something is a quote or not. How can I access that from the Clipboard class?   • Is it too early to start designing for Task Parallel Library?

    I have been following the development of the .NET Task Parallel Library (TPL) with great interest since Microsoft first announced it. There is no doubt in my mind that we will eventually take advantage of TPL. What I am questioning is whether it makes sense to start taking advantage of TPL when Visual Studio 2010 and .NET 4.0 are released, or whether it makes sense to wait a while longer. Why Start Now? The .NET 4.0 Task Parallel Library appears to be well designed and some relatively simple tests demonstrate that it works well on today's multi-core CPUs. I have been very interested in the potential advantages of using multiple lightweight threads to speed up our software since buying my first quad processor Dell Poweredge 6400 about seven years ago. Experiments at that time indicated that it was not worth the effort, which I attributed largely to the overhead of moving data between each CPU's cache (there was no shared cache back then) and RAM. Competitive advantage - some of our customers can never get enough performance and there is no doubt that we can build a faster product using TPL today. It sounds fun. Yes, I realize that some developers would rather poke themselves in the eye with a sharp stick, but we really enjoy maximizing performance. Why Wait? Are today's Intel Nehalem CPUs representative of where we are going as multi-core support matures? You can purchase a Nehalem CPU with 4 cores which share a single level 3 cache today, and most likely a 6 core CPU sharing a single level 3 cache by the time Visual Studio 2010 / .NET 4.0 are released. Obviously, the number of cores will go up over time, but what about the architecture? As the number of cores goes up, will they still share a cache? One issue with Nehalem is the fact that, even though there is a very fast interconnect between the cores, they have non-uniform memory access (NUMA) which can lead to lower performance and less predictable results. Will future multi-core architectures be able to do away with NUMA? Similarly, will the .NET Task Parallel Library change as it matures, requiring modifications to code to fully take advantage of it? Limitations Our core engine is 100% C# and has to run without full trust, so we are limited to using .NET APIs.

  • Entity Framework 4 / POCO - Where to start?

    Hi, I've been programming for a while and have used LINQ-To-SQL and LINQ-To-Entities before (although when using entities it has been on a Entity/Table 1-1 relationship - ie not much different than L2SQL) I've been doing a lot of reading about Inversion of Control, Unit of Work, POCO and repository patterns and would like to use this methodology in my new applications. Where I'm struggling is finding a clear, concise beginners guide for EF4 which doesn't assume knowledge of EF1. The specific questions I need answered are: Code first / model first? Pros/cons in regards to EF4 (ie what happens if I do code first, change the code at a later date and need to regenerate my DB model - Does the data get preserved and transformed or dropped?) Assuming I'm going code-first (I'd like to see how EF4 converts that to a DB schema) how do I actually get started? Quite often I've seen articles with entity diagrams stating "So this is my entity model, now I'm going to ..." - Unfortunately, I'm unclear if they're created the model in the designer, saved it to generate code then stopped any further auto-code generation -or- They've coded (POCO)? classes and the somehow imported them into the deisgner view? I suppose what I really need is an understanding of where the "magic" comes from and how to add it myself if I'm not just generating an EF model directly from a DB. I'm aware the question is a little vague but I don't know what I don't know - So any input / correction / clarification appreciated. Needless to say, I don't expect anyone to sit here and teach me EF - I'd just like some good tutorials/forums/blogs/etc. for complete entity newbies Many thanks in advance

  • Possible to view T-SQL syntax of a stored proc-based SqlCommand?

    Hello! I was wondering if anybody knows of a way to retrieve the actual T-SQL that is to be executed by a SqlCommand object (with a CommandType of StoredProcedure) before it executes... My scenario involves optionally saving DB operations to a file or MSMQ before the command is actually executed. My assumption is that if you create a SqlCommand like the following: Using oCommand As New SqlCommand("sp_Foo") oCommand.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure oCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@Param1", "value1")) oCommand.ExecuteNonQuery() End Using It winds up executing some T-SQL like: EXEC sp_Foo @Param1 = 'value1' Is that assumption correct? If so, is it possible to retrieve that actual T-SQL somehow? My goal here is to get the parsing, etc. benefits of using the SqlCommand class since I'm going to be using it anyway. Is this possible? I've bound to it using an object Private Sub LoadAllCampers() Dim Os As List(Of LE.Camper) = Nothing Dim Oc As New LE.Camper_Controller Os = Oc.GetCamperData(0) With Me.dgResults .DataSource = Os End With CamperBindingSource.DataSource = Os End Sub I have a tag setup on the ID property within the Camper class. when i double click on a row in teh datagridview, i do a me.dgResults.tag and it always shows the first rows ID value. If i change the ordering within the class, it will display a different value, but it's always the first value in the datagridview. I'm missing something simple to get this working.. just don't know what it is. Hopefully someone can spare a minute.

We have protocols like Modbus and Hart to handle the request and response between the application and devices. The question is related to managing the reference count of the channel. When no device is using the channel, the channel should be closed. public class SerialPortChannel { int refCount = 0; public void AddReference() { refCount++; } public void ReleaseReference() { refCount--; if (refCount <= 0) this.ReleasePort(); //This close the serial port } } For each device connected, we create a object for the device like device = new Device(); device.Attach(channel); //this calls channel.AddReference() When the device disconnect, device.Detach(channel); //this calls channel.ReleaseReference() I am not convinced by the reference count model. Are there any better way to handle this problem in .NET World?

  • Possible Encoding Issue Reading HTM File using .Net Streamreader

    I have an HTML file with a ® (copyright) and ™ (trademark) symbol in the text. These are just two among many other symbols. When I read the html file into a literal control it converts the symbols to something else. The copyright symbol converts to ? (open box in ff) The trademark symbol converts to ™ (as expected) If (System.IO.File.Exists(FullName)) Then Dim StreamReader1 As New System.IO.StreamReader(FullName) Contents.Text = StreamReader1.ReadToEnd() StreamReader1.Close() End If Contents is a <asp:Literal runat="server" ID="Contents"></asp:Literal> and it's the only control in the aspx page. From some research I think this is related to the encoding but I don't know why it would change how to fix it. The html file does not contain any Content-Type settings in the head section.
