• How to help FGLRX detect a device

  I have HD 4850 card, Ubuntu 12.10 and installed legacy drivers using makson96 ppa. The issue is, that FGLRX can not detect my device and loads vesa bios. I had the same problem on ubuntu 11.10, 12.04 versions. I want to manually help fglrx find a matching device to load as it shoudld do. It is interesting, why does fglrx search for a device in a PCI:0@1:0:1 Bus? in xorg.cof different bus is indicated: Section "Device" Identifier "aticonfig-Device[0]-0" Driver "fglrx" BusID "PCI:1:0:0" EndSection fglrxinfo display: :0.0 screen: 0 OpenGL vendor string: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. • I accidentally hid my Gnome Panel

  I got a new tablet pc, and in attempt to hide the empathy mail icon, accidentally made the entire panel dissappear. (The one at the top that has applications/places/system, and battery life/network connections etc). I don't believe I killed it, because alt+f2, then gnome-panel does not bring it back. I've tried alt+ctrl+backspace to reset gnome, that didn't bring it back. It must just be some setting like 'hide' or something... Any tips to get it back? Thanks.

• Breaking up classes and methods into smaller units

  During code reviews a couple devs have recommended I break up my methods into smaller methods. Their justification was (1) increased readability and (2) the back trace that comes back from production showing the method name is more specific to the line of code that failed. There may have also been some colorful words about functional programming. Additionally I think I may have failed an interview a while back because I didn't give an acceptable answer about when to break things up. My inclination is that when I see a bunch of methods in a class or across a bunch of files, it isn't clear to me how they flow together, and how many times each one gets called. I don't really have a good feel for the linearity of it as quickly just by eye-balling it. The other thing is a lot of people seem to place a premium of organization over content (e.g. 'Look at how organized my sock drawer is!' Me: 'Overall, I think I can get to my socks faster if you count the time it took to organize them'). Our business requirements are not very stable. I'm afraid that if the classes/methods are very granular it will take longer to refactor to requirement changes. I'm not sure how much of a factor this should be. Anyway, computer science is part art / part science, but I'm not sure how much this applies to this issue.

  I’ve received a buch of emails from PASS Summit “First Timers” that are also somehow new to SQL Server (for “somehow” I mean people with less than 6 month experience but with some basic knowledge of SQL Server engine) or are catching up from SQL Server 2000. The common question regards the session one should not miss to have a broad view of the entire SQL Server platform have some insight into some specific areas of SQL Server Given that I’m on (semi-)vacantion and that I have more free time (not true, I have to prepare slides & demos for several conferences, PASS Summit  - Building the Agile Data Warehouse with SQL Server 2012 - and PASS 24H - Agile Data Warehousing with SQL Server 2012 - among them…but let’s pretend it to be true), I’ve decided to make a post to answer to this common questions. Of course this is my personal point of view and given the fact that the number and quality of session that will be delivered at PASS Summit is so high that is very difficoult to make a choice, fell free to jump into the discussion and leave your feedback or – even better – answer with another post. I’m sure it will be very helpful to all the SQL Server beginners out there. I’ve imposed to myself to choose 6 session at maximum for each Track. Why 6? Because it’s the maximum number of session you can follow in one day, and given that all the session will be on the Summit DVD, they are the answer to the following question: “If I have one day to spend in training, which session I should watch?”. • Estimate of Hits / Visits / Uniques in order to fall within a given Alexa Tier?

  Hi there! I was wondering if anyone could offer up rough estimates that could tell me how many hits a day move you into a given Alexa rank ? Top 5,000 Top 10,000 Top 50,000 Top 100,000 Top 500,000 Top 1,000,000 I know this is incredibly subjective and thus the broad brush strokes with the number ranges... BUT I've got a site currently ranked just over 1.2M worldwide and over 500k in the USA (http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/fstr.net) Pretty cool for something hand-built on weekends (pat self on back) I was applying to an ad-platform and was told that their program doesn't accept webmasters who have an Alexa rank of greater than 100,000. (Time to take back that pat on the back I guess). I know that my hits in the last 30 days are somewhere on the order of 15,000 uniques and 20,000 pageviews. So I'm wondering how much harder do I have to work to achieve my next "goals"? I'd like to break into the top million, then re-evaluate from there. It'd be nice to know what those targets translate into (very roughly of course). I imagine that alexa ranks and tiers become very much exponential as you move up the ranks, but even hearing annecdotal evidence from other webmasters would be really useful to me. (ie: I have a site that is ranked X and it got Y hits in the last 30 days) Thanks :) - Alex

• Windows 8.1 backlight turns off

  This is one of the strangest things I have ever seen. I have an HP Elitebook 8460p and recently updated my Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. Now when I have certain windows open and focused (it's always different, sometimes it's chrome, sometimes it's the control-panel and so on, there is no clear pattern) the backlight of the screen is completely turned off - when I take a torch and point it to the screen or hold it to a bright-light source I can see there is still a picture there you can even work (or better said you cuold if you'd see anything). When I tab to certain other windows the screen goes back to normal back light - I can then tab back to the other window and the backlight will be turned off again. I have no idea what's going on and also no idea what information you need. The display-adapter I got is the AMD Radeon HD 6400M - I tried updating to the newest driver but that didn't help.   I didn't realise how world wide the users of the site are. I am based in England and will be helping out at an International Camp for young people in Finland this summer. I will be in charge off an game where we will have 1500 young people searcing for these CD's that will be hidden all over the camp site. They will have to find them and bringing them back to base one at a time. The young people will be divided into 5 teams and the team that brings back the most gets a prize. Hope this helps and allows me to put the reequest back on the site. I have tried to source them in Finland but have had no success.

• Should Android and iPhone UI be different?

  I'm not completely new to developing apps, but I'm at a point where I'm trying to develop something and deploy it on several mobile platforms. To only concentrate on two major ones, suppose I'm developing an app for Android and iPhone and designing UI and the general user interaction architecture. Both platforms give guidelines as to how their UIs should work. For example, most iPhone apps have the Navigation Bar (the one that says Testing 1 and has a Back button) and an Icon Bar for navigating a program, while Android uses an Options Menu fetched via a Menu button and the "back" navigation is handled with the physical Back button on the device. I've seen many apps that try to force the same UI on every platform. For example, custom-building an iPhone style Icon Bar and putting it in their Android apps, but it just doesn't quite look right to me and it feels like it violates UI design guidelines somewhat. Are there any good design patters for implementing something sufficiently similar on both platforms, yet still platform-specific enough so that the user would not feel out of their comfort zone? What do people usually do in these situations?

• why doesn't my computer resume after sleeping overnight?

  i'm having a weird, weird bug that's been haunting me since 11.10. if i listen to music or watch a video and my computer automatically goes to sleep at night, it won't properly resume in the morning. otherwise, suspend and resume works just fine. what happens is that the wi-fi and bluetooth indicator (that turns from white to orange when suspending) stays orange, the display doesn't turn on, and the only option i have is to hard reset the machine. here's what i've tried so far: installing (and uninstalling and reinstalling) laptop-mode-tools switching the proprietary wireless driver (broadcom-wl) to the open source one (brcmsmac & bcma) and back unloading (and blacklisting) all bluetooth modules (rfcomm, btusb, bnep, bluetooth) and stopping (# stop bluetooth) and disabling (# echo 'manual' /etc/init/bluetooth.override) the bluetooth service creating a custom pm sleep action as suggested here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11926504 not watching youtube / any stuff that uses flash before going to sleep (i have flashblock, and i checked $ ps aux | grep flash) because i suspected flash to be the culprit trying out different versions of fglrx (the one from the repos, then installing the latest one from amd's site via generated .deb files, then back to the official ones) none of these worked. i remember back in the days of 10.04, there was a gconf key called network sleep: i thought about disabling that, since re-enabling the wireless card seems to be the problem (according to the indicator led), but the option appears to be missing from gnome 3 (unity-2d, whatever). does anyone have any ideas? thanks, bamdad

• Restore Default Appearance in Ubuntu 12.04

  I'd like the original colour scheme, icon style of 12.04. I somehow lost the Ambiance theme (possible error or upgrade error). I re-installed 'light-themes' from the terminal and got it back. But the panel on the top that shows the options of sound, battery and wi-fi has changed and I can-not get the original setting back. In the windows, the close, minimize tools have shifted to the right instead of the original left side. I had installed MyUnity and Ubuntu Tweak but deleted them. As such, I want the original setting back. Kindly help me with the commands. I have searched for solutions; there are multiple and I need to be sure if I should follow the same. Kindly bear before marking duplicate. Discoveries *. [The appearance is gray and boxy as outlined here.] Not sure same problem. *. [Similar 'gray and boxy' article here] *. Desktop forgets theme.] *. I have also tried unity --reset command. It never completes. I gave it 20 minutes.

• Ubuntu 12.10 Unity & Gnome Shell problems

  I'm experiencing some problems since I decided to upgrade Ubuntu to 12.10 version two days ago. Firstly, I cannot select the Unity environment I previously used on 12.04 without opening the terminal with Ctrl+Alt+T and typing setsid unity. When I select the Unity environment on the account page when I start the computer, it automatically switch back to Gnome and launch my session. I tried to set back Unity using the setsid unity tip, and it worked fine. But after few minutes, everything freeze and I cannot control anything anymore. The only option left is to press the Power button of my Asus EeePC and switch everything off. Question 1 : What can I do to get my Unity environment back on 12.10 from the start, without using the terminal every time? What should I do to prevent the all system to freeze once done? Secondly, and since I cannot use Unity for new, I'm using an other interface, GNOME Shell. What's bothering me is that the Activities bar (let's call it like that, 'cause I don't know the proper name) and the Internet bar (or any bar from any other window) cannot merge into one another, reducing the display of the screen I'm actually using to peanuts! Question 2 : Is there a way to merge those two bars? Or is there a way to hide the Activities bar when I'm not using it like on Unity environment?

• GUI based backup utility [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Comparison of backup tools I have read favorable reviews for 'Back In Time' for the purpose stated above. Still I am posting this question as I have some demands in my mind. Few years back I was using ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery by IBM on my Lenovo PC under Windows. That provided me nice features like compressed backups, boot time options - OS Repair, Restore entire OS, restore entire system to an older date, restore individual files etc. Out of these the feature I liked the most was compressed backups. Similar features are available in software like Norton Ghost too. In Back In Time I was surprised to see that the snapshot takes up same amount of space as that of the original contents, no compression at all. Furthermore, I was not able to find options to change the compression ratio etc. under settings. According to me compression of backups is a must have feature. Therefore, can anyone suggest me any other utility which can serve the purpose. I insist on GUI based tool since I don't want to mess up with backups!

• TraceTune: Improved Comment View

  I wanted an easier way to identify queries I’d already looked at so I could skip them.  I’ve been entering comments for each query as I review it.  These comments typically fall into three categories: a change I made, no easy fix available or something needs to be changed on the client.  TraceTune now highlights any statement with a comment in bold.  If you hover over the statement you’ll see the most recent comment for that statement. This gives me a quick way to see what’s new and identify those queries that still need work.  This is especially helpful when I come back to a server after weeks or months away.  These comments help jar my memory and remind me what I’ve worked on. I made the font slightly smaller in some of the tables.  It’s still readable but I’m able to get more of a SQL statement on the screen.  I also got to re-experience the pain of Internet Explorer, Chrome and FireFox all displaying text (and pop-up text) slightly different. Seeing the comments on a trace has been a big help to me.  I often do a round of tuning and then don’t come back to a server until months later.  Having the comments available helps me get back up to speed quickly.

• Use System Restore to rescue lost user profile in Win XP?

  Hi! My win XP account profile has recently been "reset". Many app settings are lost. For example, the "recent project" list in VS 2005 is empty. There should be lots of other stuffs that are painfully lost without me knowing! What can I do? Can I retrieve the app settings from System Restore? I don't have much confidence on this util, even tho I think restoring to a point when the profile still works, and back up away the C:\Documents and Settings (is it where all the app setting files are located?), that should work... Is it reliable to restore to a previous restore pt and then goes back to the latest RP? I've googled on System Restore, looks like what the util does is just back up some physical files, and restore them when doing System Restore. That sounds quite safe, but I am still uncomfortable to this. Thx for u guys' help in advance!
