  • How to start Ubuntu with no working video card?

    I have a laptop with broken video card. It has two operating systems installed - Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop Edition. It has GRUB to manage which operating system to boot up. Windows is default OS. And Windows fails to boot up without video card. I'm checking with ping to the ports which are shown as used by DHCP in my router. Normal boot of Ubuntu also fails and it restarts after a while. But when I choose (blindly, but checking HDD indicator and by counting button presses when GRUB menu appears) to boot second option of Ubuntu (rescue mode) it starts and I can ping it. But when I try to connect to it through SSH, I'm getting "connection refused" error from putty. I've took out HDD from my laptop already and inserted it to WD Passport case so now I can connect it to other computer to edit configuration files. How can I check if SSH server is working? How to enable it in rescue mode? Or better, how to disable video card to be required while booting Ubuntu in normal mode?

  • Overlapping text on top menu in Unity 12.04

    So I'm new to Linux but am basically blown away by Ubuntu 12.04 and could definitely see this becoming my main desktop over time One small annoyance for me is a tendency for the global menu on the top bar to partially over-write the text description of the active window in the top panel. e.g. I focus on the "Ubuntu Software Centre" window which writes out that label in the leftmost corner of the top menu bar. If I then move the cursor up to the top menu bar to access the "file menu", this will partially overwrite the window name leaving just "Ubuntu" visible. This is a little slice of ugliness I don't want to see every day! Much easier on the eye for me would be to display the active window name at the centre of the top panel, using some of that free space and then have the global menu stay where it is, just to the right of the app launcher. I've found a solution to disable the global menu but I would prefer to keep it and instead move (or disable) the active window name in the top panel. Any way to do this?

    Background: I am using Ubuntu The newer python version is not in the apt-get repository (or synaptic) I plan on keeping the old version as the default python when you call "python" from the command line I plan on calling the new python using pythonX.X (X.X is the new version). Given the background, how do you install a newer version of python and keep the older python version? I have downloaded from python.org the "install from source" *.tgz package. The readme is pretty simple and says "execute three commands: ./configure; make; make test; sudo make install;" If I do the above commands, will the installation overwrite the old version of python I have (I definitely need the old version)?

  • Python Desktop Application with the Browser as an interface?

    I want to create an application that runs on the users computer, a stand-alone application, with installation and what-not, but I want the interface to be a browser, either internal and displayed as an OS window or external accessible using the browser (i.e. some http server). The reason would be because I know a little about Python, but I think I can manage as long as I have some basic roots that I can use and manipulate, and those would be HTML, CSS, and Javascript. I've yet to find a good GUI tool which I can use, and always abandon the idea after trying to mess around and eventually not getting anything.

Right now I'm getting an empty string and I'm having trouble debugging my setup project.   • Is there anything on a local network or desktop environment that could effect JScript execution?

    I know this sounds odd. The JS on my project functions perfectly, except when the web site is accessed using computers at one specific company. To make things even more difficult, the JS fails only about 50% of the time when run from that company. The JS failure occurs with FireFox, Chrome, and IE. I have tested this myself using FF and Chrome on a thumb drive. The browsers on my thumb always display my project site perfectly, except when run from a computer on said company's network where they fail at the same rate as the installed browsers. My JS is using jQuery and making some Ajax calls. The Ajax calls are where the failure is occurring. To diagnose the problem I created a logging function for my Ajax calls and recorded success and failure. Over a one month period, there were only a handful of failures (about 1%) from all access points other than this company. Oddly enough, the Ajax calls in the logging function are not failing. There is nothing exotic there - Just Win XP SP3. I have never noticed any other unusual behavior from their network. The company is a division of a mega ISP and is on their corporate network. Any other suggestions for troubleshooting would be welcome.

    I was wondering if there is a way to make Cinnamon 1.4 the default environment upon logging in to Ubuntu 12.04. I can install Cinnamon 1.4 without any problems, but I am trying to run XRDP to log in from a Windows machine and would like it to start "Cinnamon session" instead of a Unity session by default. The question is, How can I tell XRDP to use Cinnamon instead of Unity upon logging in? XRDP seems to work much better than any VNC based servers.

  • How to start networking on a wired interface before logon in Ubuntu Desktop Edition

    Problem Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop Edition (and possibly previous versions as well, I haven't tested them) has no network connections after boot until at least 1 user logs in. This means any services that require networking (e.g. openssh-server) are not available until someone logs in locally either via gdm, kdm, or a TTY. Background Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop Edition uses the NetworkManager service to take commands from the nm-applet in Gnome (or it's equivalent in KDE). As I understand it, while NetworkManager is running at boot, it is not issued any commands to connect until you login for the first time because nm-applet isn't running until you login and your Gnome session starts (or similar for KDE). I'm not sure what prompts NetworkManager to connect to the network when you login via a TTY. There are several relevant variables involved in starting up the network connections including: Wired vs Wireless (and the resulting drivers, SSID, passwords, and priorities) Static vs DHCP Multiple interfaces Constraints Support Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala (bonus points for additional supported versions) Support wired eth0 interface Receive an IP address via DHCP Receive DNS information via DHCP (obviously the DHCP server must provide this information) Enable networking at the proper time (e.g. some time after file systems are loaded but before network services like ssh start) Switching distros or versions (e.g. to Server Edition) is not an acceptable solution Switching to a Static IP configuration is not an acceptable solution Question How to start networking on a wired interface before logon in Ubuntu Desktop Edition? What I have tried Per this guide, adding the following entry into /etc/network/interfaces so that NetworkManager won't manage the eth0 interface: auth eth0 iface inet dhcp After reboot eth0 is down. Issuing ifconfig eth0 up brings the interface up but it receives no IP address. Issuing dhclient eth0 instead Does bring up the interface and it Does receive an IP address. Completely removing the NetworkManager package in addition to the settings above. I'm a bit confused with the whole UpStart/SysVinit mangling that's going in Ubuntu currently (I'm more familiar with the CentOS world). However, directly issuing sudo /etc/init.d/networking start Or sudo start networking does not bring up the eth0 interface at all, much less get an IP address.   • Installing OpenSSL that supports SNI along with previous version of OpenSSL

    So I learned that to host multiple HTTPS websites on the same IP address you need an OpenSSL version that supports SNI (0.9.8f and higher). My RHEL5 box currently has 0.9.8e and Apache version httpd-2.2.26-2.el5. According to a same question here it's not a good idea to replace the original version of OpenSSL and instead to have a parallel installation. It however doesn't explicitly mention how to achieve this. So my questions are: How do I have an alternate installation of OpenSSL without breaking the system? How do I make Apache to use this version of OpenSSL and not the original one? A detailed guide would be extremely helpful.

  • Rhythmbox not saving the album art permanently

    I run ubuntu 10.10 and use rhythmbox (version 0.13.1) regularly with the albumartsearch plugin installed. However when I change the album art it is only temporary. On moving to the next song it automatically removes the previous song's album art cover. (I do know about banshee but would like to use rhythmbox). The cover art plugin is also installed by default however it cannot display some of the album covers since the songs are in my local language (tamil) hence it cannot retrieve the album cover from the internet. However the albumartsearch plugin seems to do the job although only temporarily. Any reason why it might be? I have tried looking for other rhythmbox plugins which might be similar to albumartsearch but in vain. Any help would be appreciated. I have filed a bug in the albumartsearch plugin's website. Waiting for the reply.

  • Install ubuntu-11.10-desktop-amd64 with Logitech diNovo Edge

    I know there are problems (and have been for quite some time) with the diNovo Edge keyboard. The solution could be found easily and often you can use the on-screen keyboard to fix it. Now I'm installing Ubuntu from scratch and the only keyboard I have is my diNovo, am I screwed? You are able to get to System Config during the install process and from there to Accessibility menu where you usually can start the on-screen keyboard. This doesn't work, no keyboard in sight... What if I can do some ninja copy-paste with the mouse?? Nope, no pasting allowed in the feilds: username, password, etc. Is there a chance I can fix this somehow within the .iso file before I create the bootable USB drive I use to install from? Or do I have to buy a keyboard to be able to install Ubuntu?

    I have installed Postgres 9.1.4 on an Ubuntu 12.04 (precise) 64-bit from here http://www.openscg.com/se/postgresql/packages.jsp, but right after installing many commands (programs) are throwing these following warnings in different combinations: /opt/postgres/9.1/lib/libxml2.so.2: no version information available /opt/postgres/9.1/lib/libcrypto.so.1.0.0: no version information available /opt/postgres/9.1/lib/libssl.so.1.0.0: no version information available Though this is not restricting anything, this is often getting very annoying. Is there a way to get rid of this without uninstalling Postgres?
