• Is 12.10 ready from prime time?

  I recently installed 12.10 - dual boot using Wubi. I had numerous stability problems: many sporadic, unaccounted for system errors, software that was installed and then seemed to disappear from App Launcher, etc. Machine is new HP quad with 4 gig memory - wonderful piece of hardware - definitely no hardware problems there. I went back to 12.04 (installed from ISO image, not Wubi) and it's rock solid - never any issues at all. Is 12.10 not ready for prime time? Are there fixes-updates in the pipe? Should I get a DVD disc and install 12.10 from ISO instead of Wubi? New to Linux/Ubuntu after 20 years on MS/Windows and loving it - I develop in C++ and Python - maybe will try Lazarus since I know Delphi. Would like to use the latest and greatest Ubuntu but I will not sacrifice stabilty. Are there known problems with 12.10? Would using the standard install instead of Wubi help? Seems a lot of users are voting down this question - not sure why since other users have confirmed problems.

• Why is Latex so big?

  On windows, MikTex comes in a DVD. It's several times bigger than a typical Linux distribution. This makes it impossible to carry Latex on a memory stick like I do with many other useful software. Why is it so big? I thought it was just a language or system, but I've never seen any programming language with gigabytes of libraries. It's just that there's a bad feeling when your Latex distribution takes up four gigabytes of space when you expect it to be more of, say, 200mb.

  I'm using the following Amazon EC2 resources in the US East (Virginia) region: 1 Running Instance 1 Elastic IP 2 EBS Volumes 100 EBS Snapshots 1 Key Pair 2 Security Groups 5 My Own AMIs (customized based on my application stack) My instance is based on Linux distribution (CentOS) and my AMIs are S3-backed. Both EBS volumes are mounted on this running instance. We're planning to migrate our deployment to US-West region. Because Amazon EC2 resources are not shared across regions, my questions are: What are all the factors that I need to consider in advance? What are all the recommended & different ways of migrating each EC2 resources from one region to the other? Are there any hidden risks involved during and/or after the migration? Experts ideas/suggestions/recommendations on this are highly appreciated.

• how to split a pcap file into a set of smaller ones

  I have a huge pcap file (generated by tcpdump). When I try to open it in wireshark, the program just gets unresponsive. Is there a way to split a file in set of smaller ones to open them one by one? The traffic captured in a file is generated by two programs on two servers, so I can't split the file using tcpdump 'host' or 'port' filters. I've also tried linux 'split' command :-) but with no luck. Wireshark wouldn't recognize the format.

  Hi, We're trialling a Asterisk Now server to take over from our ageing PBX system. One of the "nice to have" features would be the ability to pause or lower the volume on the office jukebox if an incoming call is detected. We currently run a linux jukebox which plays music out of the speakers using mpd and can be controlled by the mpc client. We can manually issue the following command to achieve this: mpc volume 20 Does anyone know how to get asterisk to execute this command or some action that we could hook into when a phone call is incoming to specific extensions?

• Cost-effective Windows BIM Server

  What is the most cost-effective Windows server licence version for a machine to be used solely as a ArchiCAD BIM Server? We only have 3-7 simultaneously working architects that will be working with the BIM Server application at the same time. Most of the features of Windows Server 2008 are really not needed. We already have a Linux-based server that handles all the required tasks. The Web Server licence would be enough, but I believe it is not allowed to run it as an application server. Is using non-server Windows OS an option for such a task?

• Steam (via Wine) crashes after login - any troubleshooting tips?

  The Steam client crashes after I login. After submitting my credentials, Steam displays a dialog box informing me the client is 'connecting'. I then see the Steam main page and news page displayed for roughly a second or so before the client crashes. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 (I think..what's the best way to verify? uname only displays Linux) which I've installed on a usb flash drive using a capser-rw file for persistence. wine-1.3.14 I'm not sure how to troubleshoot. How do I identify if the problem is with wine or steam or the video card driver, or what? • Highlights from the Oracle Customer Experience Summit @ OpenWorld

  A guest post by David Vap, Group Vice President, Oracle Applications Product Development The Oracle Customer Experience Summit was the first-ever event covering the full breadth of Oracle's CX portfolio -- Marketing, Sales, Commerce, and Service. The purpose of the Summit was to articulate the customer experience imperative and to showcase the suite of Oracle products that can help our customers create the best possible customer experience. This topic has always been a very important one, but now that there are so many alternative companies to do business with and because people have such public ways to voice their displeasure, it's necessary for vendors to have multiple listening posts in place to gauge consumer sentiment. They need to know what is going on in real time and be able to react quickly to turn negative situations into positive ones. Those can then be shared in a social manner to enhance the brand and turn the customer into a repeat customer. The Summit was focused on Oracle's portfolio of products and entirely dedicated to customers who are committed to building great customer experiences within their businesses. Rather than DBAs, the attendees were business people looking to collaborate with other like-minded experts and find out how Oracle can help in terms of technology, best practices, and expertise. The event was at the Westin St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco as part of Oracle OpenWorld. We had eight hundred people attend, which was great for the first year. Next year, there's no doubt in my mind, we can raise that number to 5,000. Alignment and Logic Oracle's Customer Experience portfolio is made up of a combination of acquired and organic products owned by many people who are new to Oracle. We include homegrown Fusion CRM, as well as RightNow, Inquira, OPA, Vitrue, ATG, Endeca, and many others. The attendees knew of the acquisitions, so naturally they wanted to see how the products all fit together and hear the logic behind the portfolio. To tell them about our alignment, we needed to be aligned. To accomplish that, a cross functional team at Oracle agreed on the messaging so that every single Oracle presenter could cover the big picture before going deep into a product or topic. Talking about the full suite of products in one session produced overflow value for other products. And even though this internal coordination was a huge effort, everyone saw the value for our customers and for our long-term cooperation and success. Keynotes, Workshops, and Tents of Innovation We scored by having Seth Godin as our keynote speaker ? always provocative and popular. The opening keynote was a session orchestrated by Mark Hurd, Anthony Lye, and me. Mark set the stage by giving real-world examples of bad customer experiences, Anthony clearly articulated the business imperative for addressing these experiences, and I brought it all to life by taking the audience around the Customer Lifecycle and showing demos and videos, with partners included at each of the stops around the lifecycle. Brian Curran, a VP for RightNow Product Strategy, presented a session that was in high demand called The Economics of Customer Experience. People loved hearing how to build a business case and justify the cost of building a better customer experience. John Kembel, another VP for RightNow Product Strategy, held a workshop that customers raved about. It was based on the journey mapping methodology he created, which is a way to talk to customers about where they want to make improvements to their customers' experiences. He divided the audience into groups led by facilitators. Each person had the opportunity to engage with experts and peers and construct some real takeaways. From left to right: Brian Curran, John Kembel, Seth Godin, and George Kembel The conference hotel was across from Union Square so we used that space to set up Innovation Tents. During the day we served lunch in the tents and partners showed their different innovative ideas. It was very interesting to see all the technologies and advancements. It also gave people a place to mix and mingle and to think about the fringe of where we could all take these ideas. Product Portfolio Plus Thought Leadership Of course there is always room for improvement, but the feedback on the format of the conference was positive. Ninety percent of the sessions had either a partner or a customer teamed with an Oracle presenter. The presentations weren't dry, one-way information dumps, but more interactive. I just followed up with a CEO who attended the conference with his Head of Marketing. He told me that they are using John Kembel's journey mapping methodology across the organization to pull people together. This sort of thought leadership in these highly competitive areas gives Oracle permission to engage around the technology. We have to differentiate ourselves and it's harder to do on the product side because everyone looks the same on paper. But on thought leadership ? we can, and did, take some really big steps. • How to merge (and not replace) folders when copying, on mac?

  There's a similar question about windows. This is the same, but for mac. If I try to copy or move a folder to somewhere it already exists, it asks to replace it. That would result in deleting the target. Rather I want to merge. There's already a aquataskforce request about this, and it's a discussion going for a lont time if it's even something that should exist on Mac, due to its whole philosophy. Discussions at apple are outdated and didn't help much as well. As usual, there are professional solutions for doing this, such as Changes and Araxis. And there is the rsync or command line alternatives. But I want a free and simple solution, something like how it is done in Windows or Linux. I won't be doing it much anyway. By the way, PathFinder don't have such option as well and FolderMerge doesn't work on Snow Leopard as far as my 1 test went.

• Error with APE Server Installation

  I was trying to install APE-Server from the .deb file at the ape-server homepage (www.ape-project.org) and I ran into an error so wanted to try removing the installation and reinstalling. I did a sudo apt-get remove ape-server which ran successfully but left ape-server folders in my /etc/ and /etc/init.d locations. Me being an idiot new comer to linux decided that manually delete those folders. Now when I reinstall the ape-server those folders don't get recreated and therefore I cannot send the /etc/init.d/ape-server [option] command because the folder is not found. When I try to sudo apt-get purge (or remove) ape-server I get the following sudo apt-get purge ape-server Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done The following packages will be REMOVED: ape-server* 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 92 not upgraded. 1 not fully installed or removed. • Graphic Card Installation Failure (NV 9600M GT)

  I wanted to switch from 7 to Ubuntu. Now, the first thing that holds me back is the installation of the driver for my Nvidia 9600M GT. Ubuntu recommends me 4 drivers from the "Additional Driver" Section. Now, whatever driver I install, there are four things happening RANDOMLY after rebooting: The pc freezes before seeing bootup splash The pc freezes while seeing bootup splash image (ubuntu logo with the 5 dots) The pc gets into login screen and freezes instantly (Thought the unity-bar is transparent now) The pc freezes right after beeing able to login. (While this is happening the unity-bar changes from transparent to ugly-flat-style) I also tried to install the official Nvidia .run file but after exiting the X-Server, it says the driver is not compatible with the kernel and exits installation. Can somebody help me? I really wanna get rid of Windows :( But Ubuntu drives me perfectly insane. Please answer as noobish as possible. I'm an expert Windows user, but Linux is absolutely new to me. My Specs: Ubuntu 11.10 installed from USB Stick (like 100 times now :/ because I dont know how to remove the driver in recovery mode) 9600M GT 4GB Ram Intel Centrino 2 Dual Core 2.26GHz Win 7 and Ubuntu running along side. I tried deleting the partition in hope that the installer would find and utilize the empty space, but it only saw the original partition. I do not have an external hard drive to use, and I cannot clear any existing partitions. Am I running the installer incorrectly, or is there a more serious problem?

• Does Ubuntu 12.04.1 come with everything I need for using virtual servers and are the tools efficient?

  I noticed that Ubuntu 12.04.1 comes with Xen, OpenStack, KVM and other virtualization-related tools. I have used VMWare in the past. If I was to use Xen for visualization, would I see considerable performance lost, since Xen is run on the host OS? Is it even run on the host OS, or is it like VMWare where it's installed below any Linux OS on the machine (embedded, I guess is the word)? Do you have any recommendations on what sort of set up to use with these built-in tools? I have 2 physical servers, side-by-side. Each will need a VM used for Postgres and a VM used as an app server. One will be a failover for the other.

  I have a humble linux server to do some stuff for me. I only have an old 16gig drive in it. df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/md1 16G 16G 0 100% / /dev/md0 121M 14M 101M 13% /boot tmpfs 502M 0 502M 0% /dev/shm but when I do: du -sh / 3.5G / So one says that my 16G drive is full. The other says only 3.5G is used. Why the discrepancy? I cannot write any new files as it says the drive is indeed full. But if I can't find the files taking up all the space on the file-system, how can I delete them to free up space?

• Setting up SVN+SSH for multiple users through one local user.

  Hi, I need to make our SVN repository accessible through the firewall - but without creating a local user for each potential external user. Instead, I would like to set-up SVN+SSH to route all external users through a single local user name. We would like each external user to authenticate with SSH the regular way but then treat their instance of svnserve as if they're all that single local user and possibly, control what parts of the repository each external user can access. I know that I will need to set my svnserve config according to the official guide. I tried, but the instructions are fuzzy and I am relatively a Linux n00b.   I tried to install yum based on http://www.wallpaperama.com/forums/how-to-install-yum-problems-installing-on-linux-redhat-fedora-commands-t471.html. my current python is 2.4.6, red hot fedora core 6, 4.1.1-28, RPM 4.4.2. I tried with the yum 3.0.1 version for my current server configuration. There is no configure file on 3.0.1 so i used make install command. All files complied without error. If I run #rpm -q yum it says "package yum is not installed". Whats the problem here on the yum installation?

• Should I list this work experience on my resume? [closed]

  I am currently working at a company. I did an internship before this job with a prestigious company and project itself was challenging but it was in the initial phases and hence there were no tight schedules and we ended up doing brainstorming for the first month and the 2nd month actually setting up our hardware, which is linux servers in lab and a cluster administrator for the servers. And then i wrote an addin task which runs on the server and uses existing API to collect some statistics from the the servers in the cluster and feeding them into another entity which is basically an algorithm that calculates how the load on the servers should be automatically balanced. Neither of these things went into production by the time I left the company and I'm not even sure of their current state. Does it make sense to include it in my resume then? I also worked as a software engineer right out of school at another prestigious company for 9 months. I was involved in some bug fixes before the product launched and I don't even recollect the exact fixes I made to the product. So, will it make sense to have these experiences on my resume ? Will people question me about them and will saying it was bug fixes and mentioning what kind of fixes suffice as enough to justify my work ex there ?

• HP Envy 14, Ubuntu 10.10 and trouble with the graphics cards

  A few days ago I bought a HP Envy 14, containing 2 graphics card: An integrated Intel graphics card, and an ATI HD 5650. I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit on the machine. Most things work fine out of the box, but the graphics cards are giving me trouble. When booting, I get the message "failed to get i915 symbols, graphics turbo disabled". Then the screen blanks out during the remaining boot period. I am able to get the display working by changing to one of the consoles, then closing and opening the laptop's lid. It seems that Ubuntu gets confused about which card to use. I've read here: http://www.andreas-demmer.de/en/2010/07/18/testbericht-linux-auf-dem-hp-envy-14 that I should be able to turn off one the cards by echoing keywords into /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch, but that path is not available on my system. The BIOS does not have any methods to switch of the ATI card. Help anyone? /Carsten

• HP Envy 14, Ubuntu 10.10 and trouble with the graphics cards

  A few days ago I bought a HP Envy 14, containing 2 graphics card: An integrated Intel graphics card, and an ATI HD 5650. I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit on the machine. Most things work fine out of the box, but the graphics cards are giving me trouble. When booting, I get the message "failed to get i915 symbols, graphics turbo disabled". Then the screen blanks out during the remaining boot period. I am able to get the display working by changing to one of the consoles, then closing and opening the laptop's lid. It seems that Ubuntu gets confused about which card to use. I've read here: http://www.andreas-demmer.de/en/2010/07/18/testbericht-linux-auf-dem-hp-envy-14 that I should be able to turn off one the cards by echoing keywords into /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch, but that path is not available on my system. The BIOS does not have any methods to switch of the ATI card. Help anyone? /Carsten

• Access Officejet Pro L7590 memory card reader

  I can't manage to access my printer's memory card reader in Nautilus. I can just access it with hp-unload.
