• How can I turn a column name into a result value in SQL Server?

  I have a table which has essentially boolean values in a legacy database. The column names are stored as string values in another table so I need to match the column names of one table to a string value in another table. I know there has to be a way to do this directly with SQL in SQL Server but it is beyond me. My initial thought was to use PIVOT but it is not enabled by default and enabling it would likely be a difficult process with pushing that change to the Production database. I would prefer to use what is enabled by default. I am considering using COALESCE to translate the boolean value to the string that value that I need. This will be a manual process. I think I will also use a table variable to insert the results of the first query into that variable and use those results to do the second query. I still have the problem that the columns are on a single row so I wish I could easily pivot the values to put the column names in the result set as strings. But if I could easily do that I could easily write the query with a sub-select. Any tips are welcome.

  I have created a sample query in sql server to parse data from xml and to display it right now. Although I will be inserting this data in my table but before that I am facing a simple problem. I want to insert NULL in datetime field ADDED_DATE="NULL" as shown in xml given below. But when I executes this query. It gives me error Conversion failed when converting datetime from character string. What mistake am i doing.   I'm writing a script that is supposed to run around a bunch of servers and select a bunch of data out of them, including the local server. The SQL needed to SELECT the data I need is pretty complicated, so I'm writing sort of an ad-hoc view, and using an OPENQUERY statement to get the data, so ultimately I end up looping over a statement like this: exec('INSERT INTO tabl SELECT * FROM OPENQUERY(@Server, @AdHocView)') However, I've heard that using OPENQUERY on the local server is frowned upon. Could someone elaborate as to why?

I'm on SecurityAdmin role and when I try to execute xp_readerrorlog I get a following error: Msg 229, Level 14, State 5, Procedure xp_readerrorlog, Line 1 The EXECUTE permission was denied on the object 'xp_readerrorlog', database 'mssqlsystemresource', schema 'sys'. What I'm missing? Can this role read error logs or not?

  I made a little WPF application with a SQL CE database. I built the following code with LINQ to get data out of the database, which was surprisingly easy. So I thought "this must be LINQ-to-SQL". Then I did "add item" and added a "LINQ-to-SQL classes" .dbml file, dragged my table onto the Object Relational Designer but it said, "The selected object uses an unsupported data provider." So then I questioned whether or not the following code actually is LINQ-to-SQL, since it indeed allows me to access data from my SQL CE database file, yet officially "LINQ-to-SQL" seems to be unsupported for SQL CE. • low performance on HPC cluster (sge) when running multiple jobs

  O know this is a long-shot but I'm clueless here. I'm running several computer simulations on High Performance Computation cluster (HPC) of oracale grid engine (sge). A single job runs at a certain speed (roughly 80 steps per second) when I add jobs to the machine, at a certain treshhold, the speed is recuded by two. On one machine (I don't know the cpu kind) the treshold is 11 jobs for 16 cpu's. On another one with the same number and kind of cpu's , the treshold is 8. I thought at first that this is a memory issue but each job takes about 60MB - 100MB and I have 16GB of ram on each of those machine. Did any of you encountered such a problem? is there any way to analyz this? Thanks.

  We have a number of machines which record data into a database at sporadic intervals. For each record, I'd like to obtain the time period between this recording and the previous recording. • MySQL Windows vs. Linux: performance, caveats, pros and cons?

  Looking for (preferrably) some hard data or at least some experienced anecdotal responses with regards to hosting a MySQL database (roughly 5k transactions a day, 60-70% more reads than writes, < 100k of data per transaction i.e. no large binary objects like images, etc.) on Windows 2003/2008 vs. a Debian-based derivative (Ubuntu/Debian, etc.). This server will function only as a database server with a separate Web server on another physical box; this server will require remote access for management (SSH for Linux, RDP for Windows). I suspect that the Linux kernel/OS will compete less than the Windows Server for resources, but for this I can't be certain. There's also security footprint: even with Windows 2008, I'm thinking that the Linux box can be locked down more easily than the Windows Server. Anyone have any experience with both configurations?

  In Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and .NET 2.0, I want to convert the current date to a string of this format: "YYYY-MM-DD". For example, December 12th 2009 would become "2009-12-20". How do I do this in SQL. The context of this SQL statement in the table definiton. In other words, this is the default value. So when a new record is created the default value of the current date is stored as a string in the above format. I'm trying: SELECT CONVERT(VARCHAR(10), GETDATE(), 102) AS [YYYY.MM.DD] But SQL server keeps converting that to: ('SELECT CONVERT(VARCHAR(10), GETDATE(), 102) AS [YYYY.MM.DD]') so the result is just: 'SELECT CONVERT(VARCHAR(10), GETDATE(), 102) AS [YYYY.MM.DD]' Here's a screen shot of what the Visual Studio server explorer, table, table definition, properties shows: These wrapper bits are being adding automatically and converting it all to literal string: (N' ') Here's the reason I'm trying to use something other than the basic DATETIME I was using previously: This is the error I get when hooking everything to an ASP.NET GridView and try to do an update via the grid view: Server Error in '/' Application. • Putting our OLTP and OLAP services on the same cluster

  We're currently in a bit of a debate about what to do with our scattered SQL environment. We are setting up a cluster for our data warehouses for sure and are now in the process of deciding if our OLTP databases should go on the same one. The cluster will be active/active with database services running on one node and reporting and analytical services on the other node. From a technical standpoint I don't see an issue here. With the services being run on different nodes they shouldn't compete too heavily for resources. The only physical resource that may be an issue would be the shared disk space. Our environment is also quite small. Our biggest OLAP database at the moment is only about 40GB and our OLTP are all under 10GB. I see a potential political issue here as different groups are involved but I'm just strictly wondering if there would be any major technical issues that could arise from this setup.

• Upgrade to 2008 R2

  I don't like it, Carruthers. It's just too quiet. Well, I've done the pre-production server, the main live server and the Reporting/BI server with remarkably little trouble. Pre-production and live were rebuilds. I failed live over to our log shipping standby for the duration, which has a gotcha I blogged about before. When I failed back to the primary live server again, it was very quick to bring the databases online. I understand the databases don't actually get upgraded until you recover them but there was no noticable delay. It's gone from 2005 Workgroup - limited to 4GB of memory - to 2008 R2 Standard so it can now use nearly all of the 30GB in the server. It's soo much faster. The reporting/BI server I upgraded in situ. This took a while but, again, went smoothly. Just watch out, because the master database was left at compatibility level 90. Also the upgrade decided to use the reporting service's credentials for database access when running reports. It didn't preserve the existing credentials and I had to go into the Reporting Configuration Manager to put them back in. Make sure you know what credentials your server is using before you upgrade. All things considered, a fairly painless experience. Now I just have to upgrade and reset our log shipping standby server again!
