• C# - Coding a nested stateflow diagram

  I have the following state diagram. I know how to make a simple state machine that transitions between non-nested states; however, I don't know how to transition between nested states. Could someone explain how to do this at an appropriately high level (i.e., you don't need to write the code for me--unless you're feeling particularly generous :P). • NHibernate, transactions and TransactionScope

  I'm trying to find the best solution to handle transaction in a web application that uses NHibernate. We use a IHttpModule and at HttpApplication.BeginRequest we open a new session and we bind it to the HttpContext with ManagedWebSessionContext.Bind(context, session); We close and unbind the session on HttpApplication.EndRequest. In our Repository base class, we always wrapped a transaction around our SaveOrUpdate, Delete, Get methods like, according to best practice: public virtual void Save(T entity) { var session = DependencyManager.Resolve<ISession>(); using (var transaction = session.BeginTransaction()) { session.SaveOrUpdate(entity); transaction.Commit(); } } But then this doesn't work, if you need to put a transaction somewhere in e.g. a Application service to include several repository calls to Save, Delete, etc.. So what we tried is to use TransactionScope (I didn't want to write my own transactionmanager). To test that this worked, I use an outer TransactionScope that doesn't call .Complete() to force a rollback: Repository Save(): public virtual void Save(T entity) { using (TransactionScope scope = new TransactionScope()) { var session = Depe.ndencyManager.Resolve<ISession>(); session.SaveOrUpdate(entity); scope.Complete(); } } The block that uses the repository: TestEntity testEntity = new TestEntity { Text = "Test1" }; ITestRepository testRepository = DependencyManager.Resolve<ITestRepository>(); testRepository.Save(testEntity); using (var scope = new TransactionScope()) { TestEntity entityToChange = testRepository.GetById(testEntity.Id); entityToChange.Text = "TestChanged"; testRepository.Save(entityToChange); } TestEntity entityChanged = testRepository.GetById(testEntity.Id); Assert.That(entityChanged.Text, Is.EqualTo("Test1")); This doesn't work. But to me if NHibernate supports TransactionScope it would! What happens is that there is no ROLLBACK at all in the database but when the testRepository.GetById(testEntity.Id); statement is executed a UPDATE with SET Text = "TestCahgned" is fired instead (It should have been fired between BEGIN TRAN and ROLLBACK TRAN). NHibernate reads the value from the level1 cache and fires a UPDATE to the database. Not expected behaviour!? From what I understand whenever a rollback is done in the scope of NHibernate you also need to close and unbind the current session. My question is: Does anyone know of a good way to do this using TransactionScope and ManagedWebSessionContext?

• IDataServiceMetadataProvider - Entities dont show up in $metadata.

  I am trying to write our own RIA services provider to expose data from a server that I access via ODBC. I follow th eguidelines set out at http://blogs.msdn.com/alexj/archive/2010/03/02/creating-a-data-service-provider-part-9-un-typed.aspx I have written our own IDataServiceMetadataProvider / IDataServiceQueryProvider pair and get no errors on what i do. I check them there in a breakpoint, and the resource set and the type is there, with all properties. • How to show server errors in Rails 2.3.5 with JSON and jQuery

  I've got in-place editing on a page in my app (using Rails 2.3.5 and jQuery). I want to know how to display an error on the page when the update fails. I'm using ajax (an XMLHttpRequest) to save an update to a Comment object. The controller has an update method like this: def update @comment = Comment.find(params[:id]) respond_to do |format| # if @comment.update_attributes!(params[:comment]) if false #deliberately forcing a fail here to see what happens format.json { render :nothing => true } else format.json { render :json => @comment.errors, :status => :unprocessable_entity } end end end In Firebug, I can see the server returns a "422" (an appropriate validation error status code). But it's a response to an XMLHttpRequest so there is no redirect to an error page. I think I actually want to do this: format.json { render :json => @comment.errors} or maybe this: format.json {render :json => { :status => :error, :message => "Could not be saved" }.to_json, :status => 400 } and trigger some Javascript function that iterates through (and displays) any errors. I'm using a rails plugin http://github.com/janv/rest_in_place/ to implement the in-place editing. It doesn't appear to have any callback function to handle a failure. What are my options? Can I write some Javascript to respond to a failure condition without hacking the plugin? Do I have to hack the rest_in_place plugin to handle a failure condition? Is there a better plugin (for Rails or jQuery) that handles in-place editing, including failure conditions? UPDATE This post from Peter Bui (http://paydrotalks.com/posts/45-standard-json-response-for-rails-and-jquery) was helpful in showing how to handle an error message from the server using XMLHttpRequest.status. I looked at his implementation of a blog using ajax (http://github.com/paydro/talks). I'm surprised at the complexity required to handle a simple error condition. Usually Rails has all the goodness baked in but it seems server errors with JSON are out of scope. Can that be? I also looked at grimen's validatious-on-rails (http://github.com/grimen/validatious-on-rails/) which accommodates models validations when ajax XMLHttpRequest is used. It's not clear to me how I'd use it to handle the general case of a "save" failing when validations succeed. P.S. Please vote me up... so I can use more than one HTML link when I ask my question :-)

It shows a list of intent recipients. But sending the text file to either Dropbox or to Gmail fails. Dropbox sends the notification "Uploading to Dropbox" followed by "Upload failed: my_file.txt". After "sending message.." Gmail sends "Couldn't send attachment". What is wrong?

• How to Practice Unix Programming in C?

  After five years of professional Java (and to a lesser extent, Python) programming and slowly feeling my CS education slip away, I decided I wanted to broaden my horizons / general usefulness to the world and do something that feels more (to me) like I really have an influence over the machine. I chose to learn C and Unix programming since I feel like that is where many of the most interesting problems are. My end goal is to be able to do this professionally, if for no other reason than the fact that I have to spend 40-50 hours per week on work that pays the bills, so it may as well also be the type of coding I want to get better at. Of course, you don't get hired to do things you haven't dont before, so for now I am ramping up on my own. To this end, I started with K&R, which was a great resource in part due to the exercises spread throughout each chapter. After that I moved on to Computer Systems: A Programmer's Perspective, followed by ten chapters of Advanced Programming in the Unix Environment. When I am done with this book, I will read Unix Network Programming. What I'm missing in the Stevens books is the lack of programming problems; they mainly document functionality and provide examples, with a few end-of-chapter questions following. I feel that I would benefit much more from being challenged to use the knowledge in each chapter ala K&R. I could write some test program for each function, but this is a less desirable method as (1) I would probably be less motivated than if I were rising to some external challenge, and (2) I will naturally only think to use the function in the ways that have already occurred to me. So, I'd like to get some recommendations on how to practice. Obviously, my first choice would be to find some resource that has Unix programming challenges. I have also considered finding and attempting to contribute to some open source C project, but this is a bit daunting as there would be some overhead in learning to use the software, then learning the codebase. The only open-source C project I can think of that I use regularly is Python, and I'm not sure how easy that would be to get started on. That said, I'm open to all kinds of suggestions as there are likely things I haven't even thought of.

• DevExpress Reporting Session Issue

  This is pretty complicated so I will explain what is going on. I have created an ASP.NET website for displaying images, the way we use our images is, we have a database table that contains the URL where the images are located, however we recently started moving them from the filesystem, and storing them directly into the database as binary, but since we don't want to break older applications, we currently store them both places till they are all updated. Alright, the website I'm working on, is just a reporting website to display images by a date range, I have created an HTTPHandler to display the image, depending if they exist in the database as binary, if the row is DBNull, I just grab the URL from the other table instead, I just read the image, convert it into a byte[] and write it to the response, so it is interpreted as an image. I have created a page to display the report using DevExpress Reporting, I just query the report, save the dataset into a session, and the report reads the session to bind the report, i also have a picturebox in the report bound to "Handler.ashx?id=ImageID", this is because I am not binding a URL to the image, since it is a byte[] Also since there could be a report with 10000+ images, I am reading the dataset from the session inside the handler and just pulling out the image from the passed in ImageID, I am doing this to prevent connecting to the database each and every row. Now the strange thing is, Report loads fine.. data is loading, I have paging on the devexpress report viewer, it is loading the images fine, however here is the issue. When I print or export, I am not getting any images, I am debugged and found out the Session.Count is 0 when it tries to print or export, which is strange since there is more than just the dataset in the session. I have also added IRequiresSessionState to allow sessions in the handler, but the session count is still 0, I have changing the Handler to an aspx page, same issue. Any ideas or suggestions on logic changes, I'm all ears.. this is a very difficult situation since I have to display the images from database as a string AND byte[] since one can be URL and other be the image bytes, but I also can't slam the database on connection calls each row either. I have also reported the issue to DevExpress and they are clueless as well, since they don't dispose the session in the exporting process.

• Search multiple datepicker on same grid

  I'm using multiple datepicker on same grid and I face the problem to get a proper result. I used 3 datepicker in 1 grid. Only the first datepicker (Order Date)is able to output proper result while the other 2 datepicker (Start Date & End Date) are not able to generate proper result. There is no problem with the query, so could you find out what's going on here?   My new phone does not recognize a phone number unless it's area code matches the incoming call. Since I live in Idaho where an area code is not needed for in-state calls, many of my contacts were saved without an area code. Since I have thousands of contacts stored in my phone, it would not be practical to manually update them. I decided to write the following PHP script to handle the problem. • Managing a difficult manager

  I have a situation here at work. We are redeveloping our basic architecture across the entire company. Currently we have the following hierarchy; SQL Database <= Stored Procs not allowed. nHibernate Classes to convert nHibernate into our own objects Web Service <= for all external and [internal] calls. Class to take objects from Web Service and back into our own objects and then… Normal nTier application architecture such as Data Transformation Layer, Business layer etc. Within the database, when we are writing a hierarchy of objects to the database, say for example; Order Person Details Address Product Other We need to serialise the object and save it, in its entirety, to an image field in a table. No attempt has been made to store the objects in their own tables so that we can do useful stuff like report on it. This is an architecture that was implemented [way] before I started and as you can probably appreciate, is a complete nightmare not to mention slow as a wet weekend. We’re not even allowed to have stored procs within SQL server because in my boss’s last job they had a hundred or so and he had a problem identifying them all so therefore all stored procs are the devil. Now the same person that developed the above architecture has developed the new one. It came as no surprise that he’s essentially used the same framework only now it’s using DotNet 3.5 with interfaces and generics. We still have to go through web services, still need to serialise (everything), still not allowed to use stored procs etc. In fact, we’re only barely able to bang two rocks together here. He says to us that the framework is open for discussion but when you discuss it, unless you approve of his design, you are told flatly “No”. He simply won’t listen to any other suggestions. Even when you show him demo applications of his proposed architecture v’s yours and he can see the speed difference, he still won’t take that on board. So I guess my question is, and I know others have experienced the same things out there, how do I get through to someone like this? How do you convince someone to ditch Web Services for internal calls and applications? How do you demonstrate, and make it stick, that stored procs are a better way to go than ad-hoc sql statements? This is killing me. I don’t want to repeat the mistakes of the past and I certainly don’t want to write code that I know is going to be slow and cumbersome. Help!

• From a 3D modeler to an iPhone app - what are best practices?

  I am quite new in 3D programming on iPhone and I would like to ask for hints about organizing a work between designers and programmers on that platform. Most of all: what kind of tools, libraries or plugins cooperate the best on both sides. Although I consider the question as looking for general best-practices advice I would like to find a solution for my current situation which I describe further, too. I've already done some research and found following libraries: SIO2 Khronos OpenGL ES 1.x SDK for PowerVR MBX Unity3D Oolong Game Engine I've checked modellers or plugins to them giving output formats readable by those tools: obj2opengl Wavefront OBJ to plain header file converter Blender with SIO2 exporter iphonewavefrontloader Cheetah3D PVRGeoPOD for 3DS / Maya Unfortunately I still have no clear vision how to combine any of that tools to get a desinger's work in an application. I look for a way of getting it in the most possible complete way: models, lights, scenes, textures, maybe some simple animations (but rather no game-like physics), but I still got nothing. And here comes my situation: I would like to find right way to present few (but quite complicated) models from a single scene. The designers mostly use 3DS Max 9, sometimes 10 (which partly prevents using PVRGeoPOD) and are rather reluctant to switch to something else but if there's no other choice I suppose it would be possible. The basic rule I've already found in some places "use Wavefront OBJ" not always works. I haven't got any acceptable results with production files, actually. The only things worked fine were some mere examples. Some of my models did imported incomplete, sometimes exporters hung or generated enormous files not really useful on an iPhone, sometimes enabling textures (with GL_TEXTURE_2D) just crashed an app. I know it might be a problem with too complicated models or my mistakes coming from inexeperience but I am not able to find any guidelines for that process to have streamlined cooperation with designers. I am even willing to write some things from scratch in pure OpenGL-ES if it's necessary, but I would like to avoid what might be avoided and get the most from the model files. The best would be the effect I saw on some SIO2 tutorials: export, build & go. But at that moment I've got only "import, wrong", "import, where are textures?", "import, that almost looks fine, export, hang" and so on... Is it really so much frustrating or I am just missed something obvious? Can anybody share his/her experience in that field and tell what kind of software uses for "making things happen"?

• Fulltext search for django : Mysql not so bad ? (vs sphinx, xapian)

  I am studying fulltext search engines for django. It must be simple to install, fast indexing, fast index update, not blocking while indexing, fast search. After reading many web pages, I put in short list : Mysql MYISAM fulltext, djapian/python-xapian, and django-sphinx I did not choose lucene because it seems complex, nor haystack as it has less features than djapian/django-sphinx (like fields weighting). Then I made some benchmarks, to do so, I collected many free books on the net to generate a database table with 1 485 000 records (id,title,body), each record is about 600 bytes long. From the database, I also generated a list of 100 000 existing words and shuffled them to create a search list. For the tests, I made 2 runs on my laptop (4Go RAM, Dual core 2.0Ghz): the first one, just after a server reboot to clear all caches, the second is done juste after in order to test how good are cached results. • How can this C and PHP programmer learn Ruby and Rails?

  I came from a C, php and bash background, it was easy to learn because they all have the same C structure, which I can associate with what I already know. Then 2 years ago I learned Python and I learned it quite well, Python is easier for me to learn than Ruby. Then since last year, I was trying to learn Ruby, then Rails, and I admit, until now I still couldn't get it, the irony is that those are branded as easy to learn, but for a seasoned programmer like me, I just couldn't associate it with what I learned before, I have 2 books on both Ruby and Rails, and when I'm reading it nothing is absorbed into my mind, and I'm close to giving up... In ruby, I'm having a hard time grasping the concepts of blocks, and why there's @variables that can be accessed by other functions, and what does $variable and :variable do? And in Rails, why there's function like this_is_another_function_that_do_this, so thus ruby, is it just a naming convention or it's auto-generated with thisvariable _can_do_this_function. I'm still puzzled that where all those magic concepts and things came from? And now, 1 year of trying and absorbing, but still no progress... Edit: To summarize: How can I learn about blocks, and how can it be related to concepts from PHP/C? If two subscriptions are made to q, they will happen twice. Second, the mouseup callback is specified before the mousemove callback. This makes it a bit hard to read. Thirdly, the reference to the ellipse seems to be in a silly place. If there's two subscriptions, that variable reference will get overwritten quite quickly. I'm sure that there should be some way we can leverage the let keyword to introduce a variable to the linq expression that will mean the correct ellipse reference is available to both the mouse move and mouse up handlers How would you write this code?

• Piping input to a Java app with Perl

  I need to write a Perl script that pipes input into a Java program. This is related to this, but that didn't help me. My issue is that the Java app doesn't get the print statements until I close the handle. What I found online was that $| needs to be set to something greater than 0, in which case newline characters will flush the buffer. This still doesn't work. • Accurately display upload progress in Silverilght upload

  I'm trying to debug a file upload / download issue I'm having. I've got a Silverlight file uploader, and to transmit the files I make use of the HttpWebRequest class. So I create a connection to my file upload handler on the server and begin transmitting. While a file uploads I keep track of total bytes written to the RequestStream so I can figure out a percentage. Now working at home I've got a rather slow connection, and I think Silverlight, or the browser, is lying to me. It seems that my upload progress logic is inaccurate. When I do multiple file uploads (24 images of 3-6mb big in my testing), the logic reports the files finish uploading but I believe that it only reflects the progress of written bytes to the RequestStream, not the actual amount of bytes uploaded. What is the most accurate way to measure upload progress.   I am fairly new to WPF, and am a bit stuck, so any help would be appreciated. I am trying to write WPF custom control that encapsulates several elements of functionality that I already having working (i.e sorting, filtering, standard menus, etc.), but in a nice neat package to avoid repetition. • Mixing policy-based design with CRTP in C++

  I'm attempting to write a policy-based host class (i.e., a class that inherits from its template class), with a twist, where the policy class is also templated by the host class, so that it can access its types. One example where this might be useful is where a policy (used like a mixin, really), augments the host class with a polymorphic clone() method.
