  This is a very frustrating problem! I have a small home network with several dual boot Ubuntu / Windows computers. I have recently upgraded my Broadband connection and the new router permits the direct attachment of an external USB drive which can back up all of the household's computers. There are no problems when booted under Windows, and there were no problems with older versions of UBUNTU, but since upgrading to 11.10 I can no longer "see" the drive. I used to find it via Network / Windows Network / Home / name of Router, but under 11.10 the same method yields an error message Unable to mount location Failed to retrieve share list from server. Can anyone help please? • Should I not show all my skills?

  I have been programming for a very long time and I have in depth knowledge of several technologies. Recently I applied for a web development job and in my resume I had listed all the skills - HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, AJAX, PHP, ASP, JSP, C/C++, ARM. Except for C/C++ and ARM I had shown the skill level for all technologies as expert. Many of my friends had applied for the same job and they did not have any web development experience. ALL of them got a call for interview. However I got a rejection saying that we have received applications from very high level candidates and you have not be selected to go to the next level. This has seriously demotivated me. I do not understand why I have been rejected when I had all the required skills and all those who did not have any of the skills have been selected. One reason which I think is that the employer might be thinking that how one person can be an expert in all the technologies. Once in another interview I was told by the HR manager that it is unbelievable that you know ASP, JSP and PHP all in depth as we have different programmers for each of the technology. Such incidents make me very unhappy as in spite of being highly capable of the position I am rejected. Should I not list all my skills in the resume to avoid such situations?

• Duplicated menu, panel indicators and taskbar

  Ubuntu 12.04. The first time I log into Gnome Classic I get a duplicate of every menu, panel indicator and taskbar entry. If I log out and back in again I now have three copies. Log out and log in, four copies and so forth. What would cause this?   I just like to tell you what still is a Problem in Ubuntu 14.04 and should be solved for a nice experience of this distribution. Unfortunately I do not have any hints to tell you, because I am just a user and know not much about programming. Anyway, I hope it helps. 1) Intel open source Graphics issues (proprietary) -when attaching HDMI-cable the screen switches to the external monitor and it's fine, but there is no switching back unless restart with HDMI deattached -black screen appears for like 2 seconds as if I would change screen in the settings; frequency increases with intensity of driver use (i.e. videos or video games) 2) hotkeys (commonly recognised) -there is no possibility to adjust brightness with the hotkeys (Fn+F5 and Fn+F6) 3) touchscreen (commonly recognised) -the touchscreen is behaving like a mouse -configuring gestures for the multi touch screen seems to always end in disabling touch pad gestures 4) panel symbols -battery symbol has got a low accuracy while it determines accurately the energy left; only 5 steps of energy are shown by the symbol Thank you all for participating in the solution of these problems! • How to prevent Network Manager from auto creating network connection profiles with "available to everyone" by default

  We have several laptops at work which use Ubuntu 11.10 64bit. I have our Wifi Access Point requiring WPA2-EAP Authentication (backed by a LDAP server). I have the staff using these laptops when doing presentations by using the Guest Account. So by default when you have a wifi card, network manager will display available Wireless Access Points. So the logical course of action for a Novice(tm) user is to single left click the easy to use option in the Network Manager drop down list... At this point the Staff Member (who is logged in with the guest account) expects to just be able to connect and enter any authentication details if required. But because they are using the Guest account, they won't ever have admin permissions (nor do I want them to), and so PolKit kicks in with a request for admin authorisation. I solved this part by modifying the PolKit permissions required to allow all users to create System Network Connections... However, because these Staff members are logging onto the Wifi Access Point with Ldap Credentials and because the Network Manager is now saving those credentials as a System Connection, their password is available for the next guest user session (because system connection profiles are stored in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections.d/* ). It creates system connections by default because "Available to all users" is ticked by default when you quickly connect to a new wifi access point. I want Network Manager to not tick this by default. This way I can revert the changes I made to Polkit and users network connection profiles will be purged when they log out.

• Where to find common database abbreviations in Spanish

  I'm doing a little pro bono work for an organization in Central America. I'm ok at Spanish and my contacts are perfectly fluent but are not techincal people. Even if they don't care what I call some fields in a database I still want to make as clean a schema as possible, and I'd like to know what some typical abbreviations are for field / variable names in Spanish. I understand abbreviations and naming conventions are entirely personal. I'm not asking for the "correct" or "best" way to abbreviate database object names. I'm just looking for references to lists of typical abbreviations that would be easily recognizable to a techincally competent native Spanish speaker. I believe I am a decent googler but I've had no luck on this one. For example, in my company (where English is the primary language) 'Date' is always shortened to 'DT', 'Code' to 'CD', 'Item' to 'IT', etc. It's easy for the crowds of IT temp workers who revolve through on various projects to figure out that 'DT' stands for 'Date', 'YR' for 'Year', or 'TN' for 'Transaction' without even having to consult the official abbreviations list.

  Can I build a multi-threaded system that handles events from a game and sorts them, independently, into different threads based on priority, and is it a good idea? Here's more info: I am about to begin work on porting a mid-sized game from Flash/AS3 to Java so that I can continue development with multi-threading capabilities. Here's a small bit of background about the game: The game contains numerous asynchronous activities, such as "world updating" (the game environment is constantly changing based on a set of natural laws and forces), procedural generation of terrain, NPCs, quests, items, etc., and on top of that, the effects of all of the player's interactions with his environment are programmatically calculated in real time, based on a set of constantly changing "stats" and once again, natural laws and forces. All of these things going on at once, in an asynchronous manner, seem to lend themselves to multi-threading very well. My question is: Can I build some kind of central engine that handles the "stacking" of all of these events as they are triggered, and dynamically sorts them out amongst the available threads, and would it be a good idea? As an example: Essentially, every time something happens (IE, a magic missile being generated by a spell, or a bunch of plants need to grow to their next stage), instead of just processing that task right then and adding the new object(s) to a list of managed objects, send a reference to that event to a core "event handler" that throws it into a stack of all other currently queued events, which then sorts them out and orders them according to urgency, splits them between a number of available threads for as-fast-as-possible multithreaded execution.

Study completely from a book. Don't study from a book, just try writing code. A mix of the two; study from a book, then try writing code. Study half the book, then write the code by hand on paper.   I am a web developer that is starting to look into hosting his own website. I would like to showcase my programming skills (PHP, MySQl, C#, Wordpress). My knowledge of languages I am OK with but the actually hosting site is where my knowledge starts to get a little shaky. I know the basics (bandwidth, sub-domains, re-write rules) but I would love your input, to help me formulate a check list of certain web-hosting services that I should be on the look-out for. Also I was wondering if there were any reliable hosting providers who give you the option to host both c# code-behinds and PHP code. As I would like to have two versions of my site, one in C# and one in PHP the hope is that if I need to look for another job this website will help me show possible employers my server side knowledge. Input : 1 2 5 1 3 8 2 3 9 Output: 2 3 9 2 3 9 2 3 9 Expected output is just like the input.But I can't fix the problem as I am novice in java.

  Today I am bashing around with nasm again… some useful things I found… Set the current working directory of gvim to the current file path I have found setting the current working directory of gvim to the file location is very useful, especially if you are wanting to use commands in gvim to run your compiled code. It can be done by typing in the following in the command mode in gvim… cd %:p:h Once you have set it, you can use the ! to run commands you would normally run in the dos shell.. e.g. !dir Compiling code to make an executable There are three thing you need to specify to compile a basic file in name, they are… The output file format The output file name The source file name An example of this would be the following (where you have a file called temp.asm which is the source file) nasm –f bin temp.asm –o temp.com Output file format The –f specifies the output file format (in this case a binary file). To get a list of the available output file formats you can type nasm –hf (for my installation bin is the default, in which case I can omit it) Output file name This is just the name you want the compiled file to be called. For windows machines I specify .com as my default format.

  Over the past few years, Ive had it on my to do list to write and deliver and full-scale SQLServer training course and not just an hour long bite size session at user groups and conferences.  To me, SQLServer development is not just knowing and remembering the syntax of commands.  Sometimes I semi-jest that i have “Written a merge statement without looking up the syntax”, but I know from my interactions on and off line that I am far from alone in this.  In any case we have an awesome tool in the internet which is great at looking things up. When developing SQL Server based solutions,  of more importance is knowing the internals of the engine.  SQL Server is a complex piece of software and we need to be able to understand to a fairly low level ( you can always dive deeper ) the choices that it makes and why it makes them in order to deliver performant, reliable, predictable and scalable systems to our customers and end-users. • How do I install Intel ethernet drivers?

  I just bought a Lenovo T420, I booted the live CD and couldn't connect to my wireless router so I figured I needed the drivers for it. I have the last version of Ubuntu(12.04). It's a Intel® 82579 Gigabit Ethernet Controller So I went on intel's website and downloaded the Drivers for Linux and compiled them with make install. Here's the tutorial I followed: Linux Driver Install I have a few question though, What are these doing : modprobe e1000e ifconfig eth0 up dhclient eth0 ping intel.com As far as what I've read, modprobe seems to add the driver to the list of drivers for the kernel, but is that operation only good for one session? The two other lines, I don't understand either what they are doing. What does he mean at the end when he mentions : Note: Whenever the kernel version is upgraded you will need rebuild this driver. And are these steps permanent? Or do I have to add them to some boot.conf file for everytime I boot. Anyways, the steps worked for me and I have established a connection with my router, I just need to know if I need to do additional steps to keep the driver permanently etc.

  Hi I'm having troubles off setting particles from a point of origin. I want my particles to spread out after a certain radius from a the point of origin. For example, this is what I have right now: All particles emitted from a point of origin. What I want is this: Particles are offset from the point of origin by some amount, i.e after the circle. What is the best way to achieve this? At the moment, I have the point of origin, the position of each particle and its rotation angle. Sorry for the poor illustrations. Edit: I was mistaken, when a particle is created, I have only the point of origin. When the particle is created I am able to calculate the rotation of the particle in the update method after it has moved to a new location using atan2() method. This is how I create/manage particles: Created new particle at enemy ship death location, for every new particle which is added to the list, call Update and Draw to update its position, calculate new angle and draw it.

• Optimising news fetching

  I have a web scraper for scraping news from different sources in wp7. My current appraoch for doing this is: load newspapers information from xml file. go to the specified sections and fetch the urls of the news items. go to each url and fetch headline, image, publisher. display using a MVVM architecture of windows phone. The whole thing takes place asynchronously...meaning as soon as url from a section of a newspaper is fetched it is added to the queue, and the second stage consisting of fetching headline, image etc starts... and as soon this is fetched even for one article, it is displayed. Later on as more articles are fetched, they are added on to the list. For the fetching purpose I am using a SmartThreadPool(http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/7933/Smart-Thread-Pool) for windows phone. My problem is that...even for fetching around 80 items (in total) from 9 publications, it is taking more than a minute. How can i speed up the procedure? Note: I have a two stage approach because many times the images are not available with headlines, and are only found in the article.

• Ubuntu 12.04 takes too long to boot

  I've recently encountered the following error message: mount: mounting /dev/disk/by-uuid/3f7f5cd9d-6ea3-4da7-b5ec-**** on /root failed: Invalid argument mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: No such file or directory mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: No such file or directory mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: No such file or directory mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: No such file or directory Target file system doesn't have /sbin/init. No init found. Try passing init= bootarg. Busybox v1.18.5 (Ubuntu 1:1.18.5-1ubuntu4) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. (initramfs) _ I run sudo fsck /dev/sda2 which is the Ubuntu ext4 root partition via LiveCD. It checked and fixed the file system. The next time I boot, Ubuntu started to load with the Ubuntu logo and the dots underneath for several hours (with the mouse pointer active on the screen), I even let the computer on overnight but still it did not successfully boot or got to the login screen in the morning. I booted again with the LiveCD and checked the NTFS partitions with ntfsfix and again the NTFS partitions was checked and fixed successfully. I also edited my fstab and commented out the lines that auto-mounts the NTFS partitions. The next time I boot, it took almost 20 minutes for Ubuntu to get to the login screen, after typing the password it took an additional 10 minutes for Ubuntu to get to the desktop. On the desktop, it take several minutes to open any program, displaying the Dash alone takes 5 minutes! Is there a fix for this without having to reinstall Ubuntu? I don't see or get any errors, Ubuntu is just taking too long to boot and to run programs. Please help!

  My laptop has two hard drives, one 320GB HDD and a 30GB SSD. I installed Windows 8 on the HDD and Ubuntu on the SSD. However, after I installed Ubuntu, Windows 8 did not appear on the boot list. • Failed 11.10 to 12.04 upgrade and drove me crazy!

  Please help me with this! I first tried to upgrade my Ubuntu server from 11.10 to 12.04 thru Upgrade Manager, but never succeeded! Then I tried upgrading thru terminal, which took me ~4 hours as I was warned. When I restarted my computer, my login GUI did not show up at all! (Panic I was!) But when I switched to tty6 and it seemed the upgrade has finished, at least partially and got message Ubuntu 12.04LTS and telling me 12.10 is available. There are bunch of unmet dependencies...."apt-get install -f" may resolve the problem. Then I tried: sudo apt-get -f install, did not succeed! Also I tried sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade I got bunch of error message too long to list here. Then I tried: sudo do-release-upgrade still bunch of error message there! There seems a lot trouble with the upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04 for me. Did I miss anything? Anyway, can I ask how I can get the gnome login GUI back? Thanks a lot! Yifang

• Can I install 12.04 packages on 11.10?

  I'm running 11.10 and am trying to apply the fix to this bug in Empathy, shown at the very bottom. There is an updated package for the offending component available in the Precise repository, and someone even posted a backported .deb package for use on Oneiric. However, when I try to install that package, it seems to have a dependency on a package that isn't available for Oneiric: (Reading database ... 254452 files and directories currently installed.) Preparing to replace telepathy-indicator 0.0.7-0ubuntu1 (using telepathy-indicator_0.1.1-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb) ... Unpacking replacement telepathy-indicator ... dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of telepathy-indicator: telepathy-indicator depends on libunity9 (>= 3.4.6); however: Package libunity9 is not installed. dpkg: error processing telepathy-indicator (--install): dependency problems - leaving unconfigured Errors were encountered while processing: telepathy-indicator The person who posted the backported telepathy-indicator package indicated that it depends upon libunity-dev-5.0; the latest version in the Oneiric repositories is a 4.0 vintage. I also can't find a libunity9 available for Oneiric, so I'm wondering: is it possible to just add the Precise repository to my list and pull the updated packages from there, or should I not expect that they would operate correctly?

• Disable touchpad tap to click on Oneiric ocelot

  You've heard this a million times but the "tap to click" is a pain in the behind and I want to disable it. There is no touchpad in gpointing-device-settings and neither in mouse and touchpad in system settings. I've tried some commands in terminal but it's all crap. Dconf-editor doesn't react.
