  • Computer suddenly dies; screen displays weird flickering lines, then restarts

    I've been having this terrible problem for a little while and just managed to get a picture of 'dead screen' for the first time and I am posting it to seek help. Randomly, at irregular intervals (typically once a week), while working on something (it's been different things every time) my computer will just suddenly go dead - the screen turns to exactly the picture below (the lines flicker a little bit), it hangs there for a few seconds and then restarts. Obviously this is extremely frustrating and I want to try to stop it. I've searched numerous postings with similar keywords but nothing exactly the same as mine. Does anyone have any idea what might be the cause of this? I would post all my system settings and installed programs but the list is long and I don't know how much relevance each item would be. If you'd like to know something specific, please comment and I'll let you know whatever you need.   • Laptop white screen on power-up. Still displays via HDMI output

    my wife's laptop recently started displaying a white screen. It doesn't show post or anything, just a white screen when it's powered on. However, it works normally with HDMI output to our television. I took it apart and fiddled with both ends of the display cable, but I either didn't fiddle correctly or that's just not the problem. I also noticed that the screen won't turn off anymore when the laptop is closed. Is there a name for the mechanism that controls this function, so I can try and locate it? My guesses are that the problem lies with the screen itself or the display cable, but I'm curious if there's anything else I might be overlooking. Also of note is that the left hinge is partially broken. The corner of the plastic computer case broke off, so the hinge is exposed and doesn't stay in place. I've tried holding it in place, wiggling it around, tapping various parts of the computer, but the white screen remains.

  • Why my Firefox displays XML files as blank pages?

    Every time I open an XML file, all I get is blank page instead of tag tree. The file itself is correct and loads okay, I can see it via View Source or in the Firebug. I've tried turning off all my addons, but the problem was not solved. All other browsers (Chrome, Opera) render the same file as an XML tree. I'm guessing that I've messed up my configuration somehow and Firefox now tries to render XML files as HTML ones. I've tried googling, but with no success. Help, please?

  • HTML Element doesn't display when served with php5, restart server with php4 and Element displays.

    Get this...I start the server in php5 and a specific HTML element ('a' element with a background image) is nowhere to be seen, I reboot the server in php4 and the HTML element is displaying properly. I boot back and forth between php5 and php4 with absolute consistent results, not displaying in php5 and displaying in php4. The thing that blows my mind is that: the HTML is consistent between boots of php5/4, so both scenarios have the necessary HTML elements the CSS is consistent between boots of php5/4, so both scenarios have the necessary CSS definitions there is an identically styled sibling element, with different class name that displays properly the problem is reproducible between browsers, between platforms. I've tested it on every possible config, Mac/Windows, IE6,7,8, FireFox, Safari etc... When the server is booted in php5 there is one HTML element that just doesn't display/render. A stab in the dark, I turned on PHP error reporting in php5 (to see if there would be any clues there) and low and behold the HTML element is now rendering in php5. I turn off PHP error reporting, and restart php5 and the HTML element is still rendering in php5, and the problem has been fixed...and I can't get the problem to reproduce. This is why my curiosity has brought me here. I just spent about four hours scratching my head trying to figure out how this could be. And now, I ask any php web dev gurus out there...what the heck was this all about?

  • jQuery UI Calendar displays too large, would like the demo size???

    So I downloaded a custom themed UI for jQuery and added the calendar control to my sight (Example: link text). In the example it shows/displays the size I would like but on my webpage it's about twice the size. why??? I do have a ton of other CSS but I don't have control over the look and feel of the page (Can't touch current CSS, MEH!!). Is there a way to get the demo look on my site?   • Sending notification after an event has remained open for a specified period

    Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Enterprise Manager (EM) 12c allows you to create an incident rule to send a notification and/or create an incident after an event has been open for a specified period. Such an incident rule will help prevent premature alerts on issues that may correct themselves within a certain amount of time. For example, there are some agents in an unstable network area, and often there are communication failures between the agents and the OMS lasting three, four minutes at a time. In this scenario, you may only want to receive alerts after an agent in that area has been in the Agent Unreachable status for at least five minutes. Note: Many non-target availability metrics allow users to specify the “number of occurrences” or the number of consecutive times metric values reach thresholds before a notification is sent. It is best to use the feature for such metrics. This article provides a step-by-step guide for creating an incident rule set to cater for the above scenario, that is, to create an incident and send a notification after the Agent Unreachable event has remained open for a five-minute duration. Steps to create the incident rule 1.     Log on to the console and navigate to Setup -> Incidents -> Incident Rules. Note: A non-super user requires the Create Enterprise Rule Set privilege, which is a resource privilege, to create an incident rule. The Incident Rules - All Enterprise Rules page displays. 2.     Click Create Rule Set … The Create Rule Set page displays. 3.     Enter a name for the rule set (e.g. Rule set for agents in flaky network areas), optionally enter a description, and leave everything else at default values, and click + Add. The Search and Select: Targets page pops up. Note:  While you can create a rule set for individual targets, it is a best practice to use a group for this purpose. 4.     Select an appropriate group, e.g. the AgentsInFlakyNework group. The Select button becomes enabled, click the button. The Create Rule Set page displays. 5.     Leave everything at default values, and click the Rules tab. The page shows more options for Target Availability. 9.     Select the Specific events of type Target Availability option, and click + Add. Note: If you want to also receive a notification when the event is cleared, click the Agent unreachable end checkbox as well before clicking OK. The Create New Rule : Select Events page displays. 12.   Click Next. The Create New Rule : Add Actions page displays. 13.   Click + Add. The Add Actions page displays. 14.   Do the following: a.     Select the Only execute the actions if specified conditions match option (You don’t want the action to trigger always). The following options appear in the Conditions for Actions section. b.     Select the Event has been open for specified duration option. The Conditions for actions section expands. c.     Change the values of Event has been open for to 5 Minutes as shown below. d.     In the Create Incident or Update Incident section, click the Create Incident checkbox as following: e.     In the Notifications section, enter an appropriate EM user or email address in the E-mail To field. f.     Click Continue (in the top right hand corner). The Create New Rule : Add Actions page displays. 15.   Click Next. The Create New Rule : Specify name and Description page displays. 16.   Enter a rule name, and click Next. The Create New Rule : Review page appears. 17.   Click Continue, and proceed to save the rule set. The incident rule set creation completes. After one of the agents in the group specified in the rule set is stopped for over 5 minutes, EM will send a mail notification and create an incident as shown in the following screenshot. In conclusion, you have seen the steps to create an example incident rule set that only creates an incident and triggers a notification after an event has been open for a specified period. Such an incident rule can help prevent unnecessary incidents and alert notifications leaving EM administrators time to more important tasks. - Loc Nhan

    I've been trying to add in-app email functionality and have been somewhat successful. The MailCompose view is displayed properly. But when "Cancel" is pressed the Action Sheet with "Delete", "Save as Draft" and "Cancel" animates in from the left as if the view controller is set to portrait mode*, yet the width (or height depending on how you look at it) is that of an action sheet in landscape mode as seen in the following image: http://dansandland.com/storage/screen-shot-2.png *The view controller is set to Landscape Left, both in the plist file and the shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation method of all view controllers. Why does crystal reports show a print dialog even when I pass false for promptUser? And how, then, can I suppress crystal reports' internal printer selection dialog and force it to use my values? Edit: Whoops, CR11, not CR9. Some further information: The reports that work properly (ie, do not show the print dialog) are generated internally using the RDC API; we create a new report object, import subreports into it, then print the result. No problem there. The reports that do not work properly (ie, force the print dialog to open) have been created with a previous version of crystal reports; however, opening and saving the report does not seem to help. Sample reports in the Crystal Reports installation directory show the same problem.   • How do I implement a TextBox that displays "Type here"?

    Displaying "Type here to ..." until the user enters text into a TextBox is a well-known usability feature nowadays. How would one implement this feature in C#? My idea is to override OnTextChanged, but the logic to handle the changes of Text from and to "Type here" is a bit tricky... Displaying "Type here" on initialization and removing it on first input is easy, but I want to display the message every time the entered text becomes empty.

  • Formula for producing a CGRect for a UIScrollView, that displays a UIImage in scaled to fit way

    Hi I am loading in images with varying sizes and putting them in UIScrollViews, all the images are larger than the UIScrollView. The user can scroll and zoom as they please, but initially I would like for the image to be centered and scaled so the largest side of the image aligns with the edge of the scrollView, i.e. if the picture is in landscape I would like to size and scale it so that the left and right side goes all the way to the edge of the UIScrollVIew and vice versa I found a formula in a utility function in the Programming guide but it does not quite fit my needs. My approach is to use: CGrect initialPos = ? [self.scrollView zoomToRect:initialPos animated:YES]; I know the size of my scrollView and the size of my image, what I need to figure out is the scale and CGRect to apply to the scrollView to center and size my image.   • How to embed cover art in an MP3 file so that the iPhone player displays it when downloaded

    I want to be able to provide a URL to a music track, and when that track is played on an iPhone, to show the cover art. I've tried embedding the cover art as an ID3 v2.3 tag, and while desktop players like VLC and Windows Media Player can see it, it seems the iPhone doesn't. Is this possible? Does anyone know of a way to achieve this - preferably a method which can be automated? Edit: this may not be possible - even if I add cover art with iTunes, the resulting file will still not have the coverart displayed when played as a download :(

  • If handcoded webpage displays the same as WYSIWYG generated page, what did I gain? Can I compete wit

    My friend uses DreamWeaver to create web pages and doesn't know any HTML at all. I know HTML inside and out and can hand code from the ground up. But our web pages look similar and he can get paid for his WYSIWYG generated sites. What have I gained from learning HTML and hand-coding? Can I compete with people using DreamWeaver or other WYSIWYG editors? I know that for something like JavaScript or PHP the only way to go is to hand-code the whole thing yourself, no tools can do that for you, but is HTML in the same position?

  • Dreamweaver utf-8 encoded php page displays wrong chinese character in IE and Chrome, correct in FF

    I have an issue with character encoding: I have this page: http://www.studiomille.jp/class/ (its in japanese but the character in question is from chinese i think) FF shows it correctly, IE (all versions) and Chrome doesn't (sorry larger screenshots): FF Screenshot: IE Screenshot: (there are other character that are different throughout the site, this is just one example) Everything is set to UTF-8: * PHP sends header: Content-Type:text/html; charset=UTF-8 * PHP starts with: mb_language('uni'); mb_internal_encoding('UTF-8'); * meta tag: <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8"/> * all files are saved with UTF-8 encoding with DreamWeaver CS3 * the same font is used in all the browsers. On that page nothing comes from the db, everything is hard coded. The site has the same behavior on my localhost too. So why only FF gets it right and how can I make it work on IE also?

  • How do I get a UIView which displays text to behave like a UILabel when bounds change?

    I have a UIView in which I need to draw text in drawRect: - (void)drawRect:(CGRect)rect { ... [@"some text" drawAtPoint:somePoint withFont:someFont]; ... } Because the text requires special formatting, I cannot just use a UILabel. It looks fine until I rotate the device. Then the size of my custom UIView changes (in the parent view's layoutSubviews method), and the text becomes stretched in one direction and squished in the other. When I replace my view with a UILabel, the text always looks great, even when the bounds of the view changes. How can I get my view to exhibit the same behavior as UILabel? Some things I have looked into, but have yet to have success with: Set the view's layer's needsDisplayOnBoundsChange to YES. Set the view's contentStretch to CGRectZero. Call setNeedsDisplay in my view's layoutSubviews. Maybe I'm not doing one of these things right. Has anyone else run into this?
