  • new xp install, but it moves slow

    hi there I just installed new XP windows OS on a old laptop. I did also all the updates I was asked for. I installed also, the latest driver updates from the official laptop producer site. Now, when I try to use that laptop to talk on Yahoo! Messenger, the sound quality is very bad, and I barely hear what the other person is saying. Before I was reinstalling the XP the laptop were working fine. do you have any tips for me? What software utilities to try in order to improve it's performance? what software utilities to install in order to test it's performances?

  • Upgrading Active Directory from 2000 to 2008

    Our config is currently: 1 Windows 2000 domain controller running ISA2000, dhcp, dns 1 Windows 2003 domain controller as main file server, prob cert server as well, dhcp, dns 1 Windows 2008/Exchange2010 domain controller as Exchange server, DHCP,DNS Currently getting FRS errors on files server journalwrap error Currently getting FRS errors on othe DC's can't replicate from above Exchange DC holds Schema, rid,pdc, and infastructure roles File Server holds Domain namaing operation master role WOW, I didn't set this up, just inherited it. Am I right to assume that fixing the FRS errors is #1, what do I need to do for that? set enable journalwrap auto restore in registry? Demote W2000 domain controller, should that have any implications for ISA? We have Forefront to be deployed but that's another day Transfer Domain Nameing Role to Exchange server (I know or think having an Exchange server as DC isn't best practive) We will be getting another server W2008 to replace current file server and I thought it could takeover all roles once deployed Demote W2k3 file server and then raise functional domain level to 2008 Am I missing anything other that the sense to walk away?   • How should I configure nginx caching headers for a "baked" static file blog? (Octopress)

    I recently deployed an Octopress blog (which is a blogging platform built around Jekyll). It's a static-site blog generator, with no dynamic content or databases to muck about with. It's being served up by nginx. My question is, what is the appropriate expires directive or Cache-Control header that I should set to make sure that visitors get the most up-to-date version of the site when they visit without having to manually refresh? Since the site is just .html files it seems to get cached pretty aggressively. I've tried a million different combinations of expires modified + xxxx and even straight up expires off but I can't seem to wrap my head around it. I'm very new to dealing with caching like this, specifically, on static files that change frequently, and obviously if the site hasn't been changed then I'd like for it to be served up out of the cache. Update (still not solved though): I found open_file_cache, tweaked that. Still no dice. It seems like what I might want to do is use nginx as a proxy cache and use Apache with ETags? Is there really no convenient way to make nginx play nicer with conditional requests from the client? TL;DR: I'm running a static-file blog and I'd like to set up nginx to only serve from the cache if the blog hasn't been updated recently, but I'm too stupid to figure it out myself because I'm relatively new to web servers.

    Does anyone if is any player which supports to take notes while I play a movie or something? I can use notepad, but I have to use mouse or alt-tab extensively in order to switch from notepad to the player to pause the movie. I was thinking that the guys who add subtitles are using this kind of feature. Any idea? many thanks

  • Start a ZFS RAIDZ zpool with two discs then add a third?

    Let's say I have two 2TB HDDs and I want to start my first ZFS zpool. Is it possible to create a RAIDZ with just those two discs, giving me 2TB of usable storage (if I understand it right) and then later add another 2TB HDD bringing the total to 4TB of usable storage. Am I correct or does there need to be three HDDs to start with? The reason I ask is I already have one 2TB drive I'm using that's full of files. I want to transition to a zpool but I'd rather only buy two more 2TB drives if I can. From what I understand, RAIDZ behaves similarly to RAID5 (with some major differences, I know, but in terms of capacity). However, RAID5 requires 3+ drives. I was wondering if RAIDZ has the same requirement. If I have to, I can buy the three drives and just start there, later adding the fourth, but if I could start with two and move to three that would save me $80.

    I've edited a pps file which was made with the 2003 version and saved also as compatible with Power Point 97-2003 but a friend a mine can't see the last version of the file. The original file can be seen by my computer friend. What can I do to make the new version of the pps file to be viewable on the computer of my friend? Any tips?   • Is Page-Loading Time Relevant?

    Take this (ServerFault) page for instance. It has about 20 elements. When the last of these has loaded, the page is deemed "loaded"--but not before. This is certainly the protocol used by our testing service (which is among the small group of well-known vendors that offer that sort of service). Obviously this method is based on a clear, definite endpoint--therefore it's easy to apply w/ concomitant reliability. I think it's also the metric used by the popular Firefox plugin, 'YSlow.' For my employer's website, nearly always the last-to-load items are tracking code, tracking pixels, etc., so from the user's point of view--their perception--the page was "loaded" well before it had actually loaded based on the criterion used by our testing service (15-20% is a rough estimate). I'm sure i'm not the first person to consider this nor the first to wonder if it is causing micro-optimization while ignoring overall system-level, or user-perceived performance. So my question is, are there are other more practical (yet still reasonably precise) measures of page loading time?
