• Why does Finder keeping showing me menus in Spanish?

  This has happened before. A full reboot fixed it. This time: no go. The bottom of my menus, when I command-click on a file in Finder, are in Spanish. You can see a screen grab here: http://twitpic.com/10c63y How can I stop this from happening? I'm sure I inadvertantly hit a key combination that did this, but I'm stumped as to what that was. My System Preference settings for Language & Text have language set to Canadian English.

• Inserting Keynote slides into a Pages document

  I have a number of training documents which are formed from a word processor file and a slideshow. I'd like to be able to keep them together, ideally by inserting the slides from Keynote into Pages. Is there any way of doing this quickly? So far I have tried Applescript with little success. I can drag and drop the slides one at a time but it is a bit slow, and I've tried turning the slideshow into and dragging it into Pages but this only pulls in the first slide. Does anyone have any better ideas?

• Can't create a new HomeGroup in Windows 8

  I'm trying to create a new HomeGroup in Windows 8 for 2 new PCs with Windows 8 installed so that I can share printers etc. Both PCs use Microsoft Account to log in - a Microsoft Account I set up about a year ago with one of the early beta's with a PC that's since been repaved with the RTM of Windows 8 When I click on "HomeGroup" in the "Metro" control panel the "Create" option is not there. Instead I'm told that "HomeGroup" already exists on the PC I've since repaved and renamed and I can join it by entering the password. I have no recollection of what the password might have been and in any event that PC doesn't exist, but there is no way to say "That group doesn't exist anymore just create me a new one dammit". Even using the old Control Panel the "HomeGroup" nonsense persists with the only option being "Join" that needs a password. How do I "start afresh" and create a new HomeGroup that I can use to connect my Windows 8 and Windows 7 PCs and use common printers, network drives etc.

• W7 routing - traffic not going to default gateway

  I have a really strange Windows 7 IPv4 routing issue that I can't get to the bottom of. The summary of the issue is that the default gateway is set to 192.168.254.253, but that it is actually using a default gateway of 192.168.254.254. I've not inspected the traffic yet. In particular, I was going to look for ICMP redirects, though why there would be an ICMP redirect at all is not really sensible? .254 used to be the default gateway before the fibre was installed. Any ideas? Doesn't make sense to me why there should be this routing issue :( The Draytek Dual WAN Router was rebooted, the PC was rebooted. The PC had the network disabled and then re-enabled. All the standard stuff when Windows looses the plot. Hopefully somebody recognises the symptoms! PS: Sorry for the long post, but I didn't want to leave something potentially relevant out. PPS: No iSCSI involved on/at this or any other workstation so Windows 7 routing traffic through the gateway for local addresses isn't the issue.

Just realized though that the maintenance block examples for nginx take the site down for everyone. How do you serve the maintenance page to visitors will still allowing localhost access. Should I just create a new server block listening on another port and deny all, allow 127.0.0.1?

  Microsoft released an update for Windows 7 today (Tuesday, April 27, 2010): KB980408: The April 2010 stability and reliability update for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 is available. The update fixes, among other things: Windows Explorer may stop responding for 30 seconds when a file or a directory is created or renamed after certain applications are installed. i'm not experiencing it on my own Windows 7 machine, but two colleagues at work were experiencing the problem. i would really like to know what applications were causing problems. Microsoft will never call out the misbehaving applications. i want to know what software i should be ridiculing and insulting. And avoid in the future. Did anyone who was experiencing this problem isolate the applications?

• Mail Merge in Microsoft Word with images from Sharepoint

  Is there any way of doing a Mail Merge in Microsoft Word 2007 taking data, including images from a Sharepoint site? It's a bit crude, but I've managed to merge text by taking the data off the sharepoint site as an Excel sheet and then merging that. My problem is what to do with the images. I can set references to the images up in the Sharepoint site, however all I can find is a way of Mail Merging when images are in the same folder as the document you are trying to Merge and I can't find a sensible automated way to pulls these images together into one single folder.

• Accessing localhost via IIS 7.5 on Windows 7 very slow

  (I've asked this over on stackoverflow already, but thought I'd ask here as well) I'm currently running an ASP.NET application on IIS 7.5 on Windows 7. When I access this application on Internet Explorer (either 6, 7 or 8) it is incredible slow and often fails to load at all. There are messages at the bottom saying: Waiting for http://localhost/....... or sometimes waiting for about:blank (I've read that this can be a virus, but I've run all the usual checks and it's not). constantly, but it returns with the usual: "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" I've also tried this by using 127.0.0.1 and the machine name, with the same results. I've tried the same application on the latest Firefox, Safari, Chrome and Opera and they all work fine. I've also installed the same application on a Windows Server 2003 machine, and it all works fine via Internet Explorer. I've also turned off the IPv6 setting on the LAN connection. Soes anyone have any ideas why this doesn't work with Internet Explorer and yet does with other browsers?

Important to understand that the print failure only happens in certain circumstances: Note: We use a standard Windows printer selection box to choose the printer Terms used Superbase = a program language that uses ntvdm.exe (Windows process hosting 16 bit apps) Local Printer = printing to a driver loaded onto the Server 2008 Redirect Printer = printing to a automatically established remote printer through an RDP connection Printing Scenarios Server 2008 - 1: Print from notepad to a Redirected Printer = works Server 2008 - 2: Print from Superbase to a Local Printer = works Server 2008 - 3: Print from Superbase to a Redirected Printer = fail Server 2003 - 4: Print from Superbase to a Redirected Printer = works Results The print causes a message in the drivers print queue of Local Downlevel Document, no print though and Superbase recognises that the "Print command failed".   I'm attempting to get gltail set up on my local system to monitor logs remotely. I've got all the dependencies installed, but when I go to run gltail ... ./gl_tail configfile ../config.yaml I get this output: Missing gem net-ssh. Ubuntu: sudo gem install -y net-ssh -r .. which I've done a number of times. • Citrix and WPF, blue window

  We are building WPF applications which will be deployed on Citrix. Currently you simply see a blue window under Citrix, although the app runs fine on the server itself. There do seem to be some issues detailed on the net. Citrix forum discussion Microsoft hot fix We've applied the hot fix but this does not appear to fix the problem for us at least. Also, found this identical question on this site, but it had been removed by the author, so no answers. I'm running citrix 4.5 on a Windows 2003 server. I am trying to publish a WPF app (any WPF app has this problem) and all I get is a blue rectangle where the app is supposed to be. The rectangle is the exact size and shape of the window I expect, but it is just blue (looks like the color of the citrix desktop background). Any ideas?

• How to configure Windows user accounts for ODBC network with NT authentication?

  I'm trying to create a connection to an SQL Server database from the ODBC Data Source Administrator using "Windows NT authentication using the network login ID". Both server and client are running Windows XP. It appears that any account with administrator privileges can add the data source on the server*, though connection attempts from the client result in error messages that suggest it is trying to authenticate using a guest account. I found a Microsoft support page that says: For SQL Server...: connect using the impersonated user account. But it doesn't offer advice about how to do that. How do I impersonate a user account on the server? or (since it sounds like that would lead to an unfortuante squashing of privileges and loss of accountability): How do I give an account on the client privileges on the server database and then ensure the client attempts authentication with the privileged account and not with a guest account? I'm aware that I'm providing rather sparse information. This is because I'm in unfamiliar territory and don't know what's pertinent. I'll attempt to add any requested information as quickly as possible. *I'm planning on tightening privileges straight after I get it working as it stands.

  I purchased a new server with a few ip's so I modified the /etc/network/interfaces file recently so that my ip's can go live. While editing that file I created a backup and deleted the original file. I recreated the interfaces file using the touch command and gave +x permissions but now, when trying to restart the interface (/etc/network/interfaces restart) I get all sorts of errors: /etc/network/interfaces: line 10: iface: command not found /etc/network/interfaces: line 11: address: command not found /etc/network/interfaces: line 12: netmask: command not found /etc/network/interfaces: line 13: auto: command not found Can any1 point what I forgot to do?   I have a VMWare vSphere 5 Hypervisor server that has a static ip address assigned to it by VLAN that is configured to perform NAT. The static IP is assigned to the bare metal server via the NIC's mac address. I want to setup a guest machine to also have a static ip address, how can I go about having this setup? I have assigned a IP for the guest's MAC Address but it doesn't seem to be working as when I ping the ip address it does not respond. The guest is running ubuntu 10.04 server edition. I am trying to assign it a static public ip address. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  I'm using a lot of vpn connections daily for my work and I want to program a pptp dialer in python to ease my job a little bit by automating things. I usually go with network-manager-pptp to setup my connections but I would like to skip this gui tool and do it from the script. Something like a dialer. My question is. Can pptp connections be established using the command tools only? Also, where does network-manager-pptp saves its failes so I can take a look and see what configs it generates. • System time wrong after running ntpdate because DST ignored

  When I run ntpdate, my system clock displays the time as an hour behind what it should be. I know that ntpdate does everything in UTC, so I'm guessing there's a timezone setting wrong and it's ignoring Daylight Savings Time, but I can't figure it out. Here's what I've done so far: ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/EST /etc/localtime to set the timezone Set UTC=true in /etc/sysconfig/clock so that DST will be automatically applied date -s hh:mm::ss to set system clock correctly hwclock -systohc --utc to set the hardware clock correctly At this point date and hwclock both display the correct time. But if I then run ntpdate 0.us.pool.ntp.org, the date output is an hour behind what it should be. I've looked at a dozen tutorials and can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Does anyone have any ideas?

• Will I experience problems running a Corsair Force GT SSD in IDE mode?

  I'm planning to buy the Corsair Force GT 120GB (CSSD-F120GBGT-BK) and I'm planning to use it with an older motherboard that doesn't support AHCI (ASUS P5K SE). Will I experience any problems when running this SSD in IDE mode? A slight performance drop is acceptable. EDIT See my answer below. Conclusion: It works great.   This should be easier! (both computers can see the internet etc so I know the network it’s self is working) I have a normal home network with a Windows XP machine on it and the new Windows 7 (64 bit) machine. So I can transfer the files to the new Windows 7 machine, I wish to share the complete disk (and all files) from the Windows XP machine and access them from the Windows 7 machine. Is there a step by step set of instructions for doing this anywhere? So fare I have: put both computers into the same workgroup put the windows 7 machine into work network mode so it can see the XP machine in the work group shared the XP disk as read only But when I try to access a lot of the folders on the XP disks, I am told I am not allowed to access them. (I was not asked for any passwords by the windows 7 machine when I accessed the XP machine. The XP machine just has its default account with no password set on it) The XP machine runs XP home and hence has "simple file shairing" turn on. So it seems that even if I create a admin account (with password) and connect with that account, it still comes in as "guest" on the XP machine. Chooseing to share the folder I want access to rather then the top of the disk drive seems to work, but is a pain as I need to share each user's folder with a different share name. If the new computer was not a laptop, I would just plug the hard disk from the old machine into it, but being a laptop I don't have that option.

• Encrypted WiFi with no password?

  Is there any standard that allows a WiFi connection to be encrypted, but not require a password? i know that (old, weak) WEP, and newer WPA/WPA2 require a password (i.e. shared secret). Meanwhile my own wireless connections are "open", and therefore unencrypted. There is no technical reason why i can't have an encrypted link that doesn't require the user to enter any password. Such technology exists today (see public key encryption and HTTPS). But does such a standard exist for WiFi? Note: i only want to protect communications, not limit internet access. i get the sense that no such standard exists (since i'm pretty capable with Google), but i'd like it confirmed. Claraification: i want to protect communcations, not limit internet access. That means users are not required to have a password (or its moral equivalent). This means users are not required: to know a password to know a passphrase to enter a CAPTCHA to draw a secret to have a key fob to know a PIN to use a pre-shared key have a pre-shared file to possess a certificate In other words: it has the same accessibility as before, but is now encrypted.
