  • Languages and development methodologies

    Having never worked with Ruby on Rails, I looked it up on Wikipedia. It says It is intended to be used with an Agile development methodology that is used by web developers for rapid development. This got me asking how a given language/framework can be more appropriate for given development methodologies. Are there certain languages that are more friendly for pair programming, for instance? Are there language features that make certain methodologies are more appropriate? Are there features that make certain methodologies impossible? My initial reaction is to dismiss the connection (the design process is a business process, which is more dependent on business needs that language features). But I'm an only programmer within the firm, and I'm a partner, so I get to decide the business needs. What do you think? Also, if the SO community finds that certain languages point towards certain methodologies, what methodology is most common for c#, which is what I use most of the time?

  • Try-Catch-Throw in the same Java class

    Is it possible to catch a method in the current class the try-catch block is running on? for example: public static void arrayOutOfBoundsException(){ System.out.println("Array out of bounds"); } ..... public static void doingSomething(){ try { if(something[i] >= something_else); } catch (arrayOutOfBoundsException e) { System.out.println("Method Halted!, continuing doing the next thing"); } } If this is possible how will it be the correct way to call the catch method? If this is not possible, could anyone point me in the right direction, of how to stop an exception from halting my program execution in Java without having to create any new classes in the package, or fixing the code that produces ArrayOutOfBoundsException error.   • How to resolve this very heavy query that slows down the application?

    Hi, We have a web application running in a production enviroment and at some point the client complained about how slow the application got. When we checked what was going on with the application and the database we discover this "precious" query that was being executed by several users at the same time (thus inflicting a extremely high load on the database server): SELECT NULL AS table_cat, o.owner AS table_schem, o.object_name AS table_name, o.object_type AS table_type, NULL AS remarks FROM all_objects o WHERE o.owner LIKE :1 ESCAPE :"SYS_B_0" AND o.object_name LIKE :2 ESCAPE :"SYS_B_1" AND o.object_type IN(:"SYS_B_2", :"SYS_B_3") ORDER BY table_type, table_schem, table_name Our application does not execute this query, I believe it is an Hibernate internal query. I've found little information on why Hibernate does this extremely heavy query, so any help is very much appreciated! The production enviroment information: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.3 (Tikanga), JDK 1.5, web container OC4J (whitin Oracle Application Server), Oracle Database 10g Release 10.0.0.1, JDBC Driver for JDK 1.2 and 1.3, Hibernate version 3.2.6.ga.   • PHP client for asmx service

    A few days ago I was in charge of the development of some webServices for a client, the thing is that the client also asked for a php client that consumes the webservices. The service were published online on a server, with public access, right now I can see the wsdl from any computer, but when trying to consume it with PHP it shows me an error that says something about HTTP header and blablabla, that happened before I connected with a VPN to the server where the service is being hosted, after doing the VPN just by curiosity I reloaded the php client, and I don't know why... It did worked.... Q: Can anybody tell me why did this happened?

  • How can I pause a BackgroundWorker? Or something similar...

    I was using a BackgroundWorker to download some web sites by calling WebClient.DownloadString inside a loop. I wanted the option for the user to cancel in the middle of downloading stuff, so I called CancelAsync whenever I found that CancellationPending was on in the middle of the loop. But now I noticed that the function DownloadString kinda freezes sometimes, so I decided to use DownloadStringAsync instead (all this inside the other thread created with BackgroundWorker). An since and don't want to rewrite my whole code by having to exit the loop and the function after calling DownloadStringAsync, I made a while loop right after calling it that does nothing but checks for a variable bool Stop that I turn true either when the DownloadStringCompleted event handler is called or when the user request to cancel the operation. Now, the weird thing is that it works fine on the debug version, but on the release one, the program freezes in the while loop like if it were the main thread.

    Hi! I'm trying to connect to one URL that I know that exist but I don't know when. I don't have access to this server so I can't change anything to receive a event. The actual code is this. URL url = new URL(urlName); for(int j = 0 ; j< POOLING && disconnected; j++){ HttpURLConnection connection = (HttpURLConnection) url.openConnection(); int status = connection.getResponseCode(); if(status == HttpURLConnection.HTTP_OK || status == HttpURLConnection.HTTP_NOT_MODIFIED){ //Some work }else{ //wait 3s Thread.sleep(3000); } } Java not is my best skill and I'm not sure if this code is good from the point of view of performance. I'm opening a new connection every 3 seconds? or the connection is reused? If I call to disconnect() I ensure that no new connections are open in the loop, but... it will impact in performance?. Suggestions? What is the fast/best ways to know it a URL exist?

  • SVN Repository folders don't match my solution folder structure in Visual Studio or folder structure

    I have a .NET solution which was badly organised, so I moved some projects around to appropriate folders. In the solution, I simply fixed the paths to the new locations, and everything is working in my working copy. I used AnkhSVN to commit the solution to the repository, which worked out fine as well. However, when I look in the repo explorer, the folders inside are organised in the old way. What do I need to do?

    I'm trying to understand what is the correct why to implement COM interfaces from C# code. It is straightforward when the interface doesn't inherit from other base interface.     Is there any way of dealing with sessions with sockets in C#? Example of my problem: I have a server with a socket listening on port 5672. I need a way to know that this client is the same that sent "0x1" before.

  • Keeping the UI responsive while parsing a very large logfile

    I'm writing an app that parses a very large logfile, so that the user can see the contents in a treeview format. I've used a BackGroundWorker to read the file, and as it parses each message, I use a BeginInvoke to get the GUI thread to add a node to my treeview. Unfortunately, there's two issues: The treeview is unresponsive to clicks or scrolls while the file is being parsed. I would like users to be able to examine (ie expand) nodes while the file is parsing, so that they don't have to wait for the whole file to finish parsing. The treeview flickers each time a new node is added.
