  • Which FLOSS text editor is most like kwrite without being KDE-based?

    Among text editors on Linux, I usually prefer KWrite. I like that I can quickly turn on/off line numbers and line wrap in the View menu. Other settings are easy to change. Other text editors I've used in the past, such as Gnome's gedit, bury line numbering and wrapping checkboxes deeper into the menu system, making it more distracting to change while concentrating on real work. However, KWrite is a KDE app. On Ubuntu it drags in over a dozen other packages, which I suspect I don't really need. Why would a text editor need all that? It's slower to start up than some other editors I've tried. I'm also trying to run an all-gnome system w/o any KDE, just to see how far I get with it. So, what GUI text editor isn't KDE-based, has few dependencies and quick start-up, easy to change line wrap and numbering, and general similarity to KWrite? What comes closest?

    Possible Duplicate: How to completely remove desktop? So, I thought I managed to remove KDE completely, but apparently that did not work at all, because every KDE application is back, including the KDE splash screen. I ran sudo apt-get autoremove --purge kubuntu-desktop Then I ran sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-desktop Then I ran sudo sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth Then I rebooted and everything seemed to be the original ubuntu-desktop (without the kde splash screen and other KDE applications). But now, one week later I still boot to ubuntu-desktop, but like I said, the kde splash screen and applications are all back. How should I remove kubuntu-desktop?

    Monodevelop from git in KDE 4.10.2 does not render text in code edit tabs I tried with xfce and text is rendered ok there. I tried disabling composition with alt shift f12 and restarting x server but it was no better. I also tried disabling font softening in monodevelop options and disabling plugins. I also tried temporarily deleting my KDE profile. This is dual screen setup on Nvidia with nouveau. OS is slackware64-current.

    I am trying to build Marble on Windows (XP) and have been extremely unsuccessful. Following the instructions written here. I am wanting to build it as QT only. Configuration of the build tree fails. I am using the cmake-gui since I have never tried to compile using cmake it's possible it could be something in there. I found a similar issue; however, they compiled QT using Visual Studio and I am using QT Creator which compiles with MinGW so I need to compile in a different manner.   • How do you use kate? Tips/Tricks/Workflow

    We all seen a bunch of these? Mostly for IDE's but also for vim and emacs. Kate is (only) a text editor (an awesome one) but it has a ton of options plus a number of plugins, so its hard to know all of it well. How do use the Kate text editor? Please share your workflow and help me and others learn some of the cool tricks you use. I'll start I use the built in terminal a lot opening files quickly, and using it as an enhanced haskell repl with ghci (since ghci doesn't allow you all to just put in all kinds of haskell code). Also use split views to quickly compare files (especially different versions of the same file). Also the auto-complete maybe simple(more use for saving typing time then remembering functions) but it works really well for that. Also if You highlight something and hit a start [/{/( it puts it in between brackets rather then replacing it with a bracket(why the hell do a lot of IDEs not have this feature).

  • Kubuntu - Can't move/max/min windows [closed]

    All of a sudden it seems when ever I open a window on my Kubuntu (9.10) system, the windows dock in the upper left corner and can't be moved. There is nor border on the windows, no min/max/close buttons in the upper right corner of the windows. I tried opening a term window but it seems I can't type in the window. Any ideas what might be causing this?

  • How do I provide arguments to an application launcher in kde?

    So I can create launchers in a quicklaunch thing on the kde desktop. The launchers are easy to create, and work most of the time. What I haven't figured out, is how to pass arguments to the applications that I want to launch. I want to launch the firefox profile manager and I also want to add a launcher for an emacsclient frame. For emacsclient, I've tried these: emacsclient -c "emacsclient -c" 'emacsclient -c' None of them work. When I click the launcher, the tiny emacs logo appears attached to the mouse pointer, and stays there for at least a couple of minutes, but no new frame opens. So, how can I actually open an emacsclient frame, or any other application with an argument from quicklaunch?

But what about suspend-to-lid if you are working on the console or using a non-bloated window-manager? What is the current mechanism to configure suspend-on-lid system wide? What of hald/udev/acpid/foo-kit/random-thing is the right place to hook this feature in? What is the up-to-date command to suspend from the command line/script? echo -n mem > /sys/power/state pm-suspend pmi or something else? Btw, if it matters, I want to configure it on some Thinkpads.

    I am trying to uninstall synaptic. I prefer using apt-get and other command line tools to manage my packages. So I do not need synaptic and the software manager. I'm trying to remove both of them using apt-get. Its a new box. Recently installed Linux Mint mate 15. After installation, the only thing I did was, sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get dist-upgrade After that, I did this command for removing synaptic, sudo apt-get remove --purge synaptic But this gives me a very weird output, Reading package lists...     I want to upgrade my Ubuntu Lucid to Kubuntu Maverick (with a fresh install of course). I want to try KDE, but I have heard there are slight issues with the native QT applications compared to the GTK application equivalents - such as nvidia-settings, Gimp, Ubuntu Software Centre, and especially th eSynaptic package manager (which in detail showed the administration package / KPackageKit is not powerful yet than synaptic) I believe we can have run GTK+ applications in KDE, but GTK+ applications do not blend with the KDE desktop. Also Java does not provide a GUI for KDE/QT. Should I install Kubuntu (KDE / QT) or stay with ubuntu (GNOME / GTK +)?

    In GNOME and KDE, (and from what I hear, OS X aswell), you have a feature called multiple desktops. It allows you to have multiple screens of apps running, without having the same number of monitors. Does such a program exist for Vista? I'd like around four desktops (one for IM, one for programming, one for browsing/email and one for other apps), and at home I usually have one monitor if using my laptop outside of home, or two if I'm using it at home.

  • How can I modify the knetworkmanager icon in my kde taskbar?

    I am using kubuntu 12.04 Precise 64 on my notebook. Almost everything works fine. I would like to modify the colors of the icon(s) used by knetworkmanager to indicate wifi online. Right now, I am using the (default?) Oxygen theme. What I want is to make the online icons some color other than gray - probably black, so the contrast is greater and they're easier for me to see (I use reading glasses.) I found an old article on how to do this, but when I added the icons it mentioned, they were ignored. Where are these icons stored? Can I just edit them with something like gimp to change the colors, etc.? TIA

    I customised my keyboard layout in 9.10 by editing the appropriate /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/ file. After upgrading to 10.04 I noticed it had overwritten all my modifications, so I recovered the layout and overwrote the symbol file's base entry. Sadly KDE (and, presumably, the entire OS) seems to ignore the files altogether. The help files don't mention anything about modifying layouts anyway (and the layout switcher seems to be using setxkbmap, which uses the above path according to its man page), so I'm at a bit of a loss. Do I need to compile this into some other format somehow or how do I get it to work?
