  • Hotfix entries in event log

    Server 2008/2008 R2 I'm trying to remotely monitor these servers to watch the progress of hotfixes being installed. I was able to find this in Server 2003/2003 R2: -Log: System -Source: NtServicePack It seems the above event is written when every hotfix is installed. I can't seem to find a comparable entry in Server 2008/2008 R2 though. Is there anything similar that I can easily monitor for remotely?

  • DNS PTR record when domain on shared IP address

    Hello, I own a typical shared IP hosting plan and domain. I can modify the DNS of the domain from the control panel. The mailserver shares the same IP address, so my typical DNS config is: www.mydomain.com A -> IP mydomain.com A -> IP ftp.mydomain.com A -> IP mail.mydomain.com A -> IP mydomain.com MX(10) -> IP I read some Q&A on this site where they suggest to add PTR record mainly for mailserver. I would like to add PTR record to my domain, I have got two questions: 1) can PTR record be added even if the hosting/mailserver are on a shared IP address? Or do I need a dedicated IP. 2) How do I setup PTR record, I mean does it look like A record: mydomain.com (PTR) -> myip

  • Browsing mapped network drives in Aptana Studio - Windows 7

    I've recently started using Windows 7 (64-bit) at work, but after installing Aptana like usual, and mapping my network folders like I always have, Aptana shows the mapped drives, but with a red X on the drive icon. Using the native windows explorer I can browse the drives fine, and I don't need to login. If it matters the mapped drives are hosted on both Windows and Linux servers. Any ideas on what to do? My googling is drawing blanks.

  • Shinken - Anyone using it?

    I've recently discovered Shinken, which a new implementation of Nagios using python. Shinken "divides" Nagios in 5 different types of agents, each one performing separated tasks. I haven't tried it yet but for what I've seen the whole architecture idea seems great to me (it works the Unix way: one process, one task), but the project seems a little "green" yet. So, has anyone tried Shinken? What's your opinion?

  • Can many addon domains slow down cPanel or create problems?

    I actually resell hosting plans by using one single cPanel account and many addon domains under it. Basically for each new user I don't create a new cP account, but I simply create a new ADDON domain and give him the necessary space. I know in this way the final user won't be able to manage his emails and he won't be able to access all cPanel features, but that's ok. I know in my account I'm allowed to add unlimited addon domains, but adding many addon domains is there something that might happen that slows down cPanel or could create problems? Any suggestions you could give me about the way i'm using cPanel which might not be the usual way of using it. (As for instance: "be aware that mails from different addon domains under the same CP account could create many problems.", etc.) Thanks!

    I'd like to power-up my aging Mac Mini (1.5GHz Core Solo, 1GB RAM, Tiger 10.4.11) by installing a shiny Ubuntu alongside the current OS. After all, I use Ubuntu for everything save for cleaning my teeth. Since it's my first and only Mac and I have next to no experience with the OS (having used it basically as a media player) I am a little concerned about rEFIt, ELILO, Boot Camp and the fact that it's basically a 4.5 years old unsupported machine and I might get asleep reinstalling everything several times. I've used the live desktop-i386 CD and everything works. I tried with an external USB drive instead of a CD but couldn't make it boot. As for installing Ubuntu, the howtos I've found give several alternatives depending on the model, the OSX version, etc.. but they usually talk about newer machines. Which howto should I follow to repartition, and boot thereafter? Thanks

    Reconnoiter is a new tool in the world of monitoring. It is not only a trending tool but also alerting/fault detection one. In my particular case, I reckon that it's in the trending capacities that Reconnoiter has a very huge potential. One of the premises Recoinnoter is built upon is that RRDTool large installations are very inneficient regarding I/O and I think this is RRDTool major problem. One of the things that would make me change from Cacti is, obviously, the cost of change and the learning curve. So, any of you has experience with Reconnoiter? How's the learning curve? Was it difficult to move from RRDTool frontend applications (Cacti, Munin, Ganglia) to Reconnoiter? I'm looking forward to read your opinions.

I mean is there any suggestions you could give me about the way i'm using cPanel which might not be the usual way of using it. (As for instance: "be aware that Awstast could run very slow or crash", or "be aware that mails from different addon domains under the same cp account could create many problems.", etc.) Many thanks!

  • Can't ping other machines at Linux VPN PPTP server's local lan from outside

    Before anything else, hello guys, this is the first time I ask for something here so I hope someone can give me a hand, please look at the following network diagram: --------------------------------------------------------------- VPN Server Webserver (SuSE SLES11) | | | ------- VPN LAN -------- | Router with Unique IP (With Port Forwarding rules set and VPN through enabled) | PPTP connection over Internet | Workstation (PC or Laptop with Windows) --------------------------------------------------------------- So the idea is for the workstation to connect to the PPTP Server and then be able to access a Web Application on the Webserver, right now I have the PPTP server configured and the VPN works, I can connect to the SLES11 server with no problems from the workstation and I can ping it and everything works fine but if I try to ping the Webserver from the workstation, I can't reach it, I'm making a mistake somewhere but I don't see where, please note that I'm not a network expert and thus I'd greatly appreciate some specific guidance.   • Windows 7 PPTP VPN problem

    Hi, I'm currently using an win 7 as an network server at my home. I've created some shared folders wich can be accessed easily from any pc on my network (win and mac computers) recently I decided to turn on the win 7 pptp to access remotely to my server from anywhere. the problem is with that on, on my router my server ip change, acording to my ipconfig on the cmd my router gets the ip from a "PPP adapter RAS (dial in)". when that happens I cannot access to the shared files over the lan on my mac, but i can connect to the vpn but again can't access to my files. (i've tried connecting to the vpn from another network and it worked, even the file share) anyone can help me? thanks

  • Awstats showing strange 404 referrers

    When I look at Awstats 404 errors I see sometimes strange referrers. For example on www.mydomain.com I might see a 404 error reported in Awstats that says: URL (not found) Referrers some-file.jpg http://www.mydomain.com/some-page.html some-file.jpg is a file that does not exist, so it's not strange that if someone tried to reach it got back a 404 from server. The strange part is that the referring page DOES NOT EXIST TOO, I mean http://www.domain.com/some-page.html DOES NOT EXIST, so how could it be the referrer? Is it some client cheating the referrer?   • ping alternative to measure routing distance (on Windows)

    Hello, in order to measure aprroximately the rouitng distance (to see if a server is close to my country or too far away) I usually use ping command. I'm in Italy, when I ping Italian servers I get 36ms when I ping US EAST servers I get an average of 120ms when I ping US WEST servers I get an average of 200ms etc. Unfortunately some web hosters turn off the ping reply on their servers, so my question is how do I detect the routing distance, is there another easy to use command in Windows to accomplish the same task?   • USB seems to pause system

    I've an application that does some simple measuring, for which it polls a few 100kbs several times a second (8-25 times) The behaviour is not really dependant on chipset (happens on several mobo's intel 965- P55) and OSes (XPsp3 and win7). Also the make of the USB keyboard doesn't seem to matter. I notice that sometimes when an USB kbd is plugged in, the system pauses for say 500-1000ms. (about 900-1000ms on disconnect, and 400-500 on the subsequent connect) It also happens for other USB devices (most notably mice and massstorage devices), but only the first time such device is connected to an installation. This disrupts the measurement and I really would like to get rid on this. I already tried to disable as much as possible. (powersave, teletubby mode (*) etc), and while this helped with the non-USB related disruptions of the measurement, it doesn't help with the USB related ones. (*) fyi, turning off themes (to resp. classic/non-aero), and turning off effects in system solved problems that occured when minimizing/maximizing the app. Any pointers to look into? I'm a bit stuck with this.

    For some reason IE8/IE7/IE6/IE5 on Windows XP, instead to use the certificate that is listed on the nginx website config, is using another certificate that is used from other websites. Checking the nging config file for the website everything is fine. A confirm of this is that all the other browsers (Chrome/Firefox/Safari/IE9) are using the correct certificate.   • Average mail quota usage: tricks to implement unlimited email quota.

    I suppose that hosters who provides unlimited mail quota are only claiming it unlimited, and hope that they won't run out of disk space. Correct me if I'm wrong. In order to do such trick they will have probably to calculate the average real quota used by the average user. Let's say on a 100 GB space hosting I offer to 20 x 1GB emails, obviously if all user fill their mail my server would stop working cause they would require 200 GB, but I think I can expect this trick to work cause it will never happen (or it's extermly unprobable) that all user fills up all their mails. But the QUESTTIONS are: What's the average email usage? Can we say that a user normally fills up 1/2 or 1/3 of the quota you provide him? Thanks to any answers/suggetions you might provide.

  • Keyboard doesn't work after Windows resume from sleep (S3) -- how to fix?

    I have a weird issue with my keyboard after resuming from S3 sleep: I can type perfectly for maybe 5 seconds, but afterwards the keyboard ceases to work until I hibernate or restart (or sleep again -- see below.) The rest of my system runs just fine -- just the keyboard apparently "freezes" up. Some closer observations: The keyboard will work for 5 seconds (and freeze again) every time I resume from sleep, even if it was frozen from a previous sleep The caps lock light will work fine within the 5 seconds. But after the keyboard "freezes", the light will remain on, but I'll be unable to turn it off. Perhaps this means power wasn't cut off from the keyboard, but it's just some software freezing up the port??? Given this info, would this indicate a problem with Windows itself? Drivers, maybe? Can I rule out the BIOS as the culprit? Finally, any ideas on how to fix? Thanks! Specs: Windows 7 x64 HP tx1000 laptop

  • Server speed: sharing one script.php or using many copies the same script.php

    Let's assume: I have thousands of domains on same Apache server. Each domain is in a folder under server public_html document folder, so it can be accessed by calling "www.somedomain.com" or by calling "www.serverdomain.com/somedomain_folder" In each domain there is a website who needs a certain script.php (identical for each domain). From a coding point view, its obvious that it's better to use a unique script.php, so when i update it with new features/bug fixes etc, I need to update on server only one file and it will work for all domains. But from a server point of view? If i use a unique script all domains will access it at the same time, will the server run slower compared to the situation where each domain called its own script?
