• How long does it take for Google to re-index pages or update the link titles?

  On one of our classified sites, when doing site:[mysite.com] in Google, the link text is simply [product name] - [mysite.com], where as it should read [product name] classifieds for sale in... I suspect that the site map may have been submitted when we just had [product name], and updated the page titles later. However, it has been a couple of weeks that I have confirmed the longer page titles, and still they appear shortened in organic results. How can I get this looking right in Google's organic results?

These consultants do what a normal software developer does, write code, estimate tasks, fix bugs and attend meetings etc. The only difference being the financials, consultants end up earning more. Then how is a software developer different from a "consultant"? In addition to the main question, I would like to know how can a software developer become a consultant? Are there any specific guidelines for a consultant? Do they need to amass certifications and write up research papers? Please do not confuse the software consultant with a management consultant. Software consultants I have seen are not managers.

  Wanted: Experienced Delphi programmer to maintain ginormous legacy application and assist in migration to C# Later on, as the new hire settles into his role... "Oh, that C# migration? Yeah, we'd love to do that. But management is dead-set against it. Good thing you love Pascal, eh?" I've noticed quite a lot of this where I live (Scotland) and I'm not sure how common this is across IT: a company is using a legacy technology and they know that most developers will avoid them to keep mainstream technology on their resumes. So, they will put out a advertisement saying they are looking to move their product to some hip new tech (C#, Ruby, FORTRAN 99) and require someone who has exposure to both - but the migration is just a carrot on a stick, perpetually hung in front of the hungry developer as he spends each day maintaining the legacy app. I've experienced this myself, and heard far too many similar stories to the point where it seems like common practice. I've learned over time that every company has legacy problems of some sort, but I fail to see why they can't be honest about it. It should be common sense to any developer that the technology in place is there to support the business and not the other way round. Unless the technology is hurting the business in someway, I hardly see any just cause for reworking the software stack to be made up whatever is currently vogue in the industry. Would you say that this is commonplace? If so, how can I detect these kinds of leading advertisements beforehand?

• Do you believe it's a good idea for Software Engineers to have to work as Quality Assurance Engineers for some period of time?

  I believe it is. Why? I've encountered many Software Engineers who believe they are somehow superior to QA engineers. I think it may help quench this belief if they do the job of a QA engineer for some time, and realize that it is a unique and valuable skill-set of its own. The better a Software Engineer is at testing their own programs, the less cost in time their code incurs when making its way through the rest of the software development life-cycle. The more time a Software Engineer spends thinking about how a program can break, the more often they are to consider these cases as they are developing them, thus reducing bugs in the end product. A Software Engineer's definition of "complete" is always interesting...if they have spent time as a QA engineer maybe this definition will more closely match the designer of the software's. What do you all think?

  I work for a small company which has less than 100 persons. Several months ago, this company offered me position of SA and I accepted. There are three teams in this company, and I work for one of them. This is the first time I work as a SA. During the past months, I find I don't have any power of management, I even can't let the team member do things (coding-related) in the way which is correct and more efficient. The team members argue with me on very very basic technical questions and I have to explain to them again and again. Though some members did take my advice, other members stubbornly program in their way which frequently proved wrong finally. Recently I feel a little tired and confused.   I am employed as a Software Engineer with a background in C# and .NET. I am trying to interface with an web API. I asked for help because I didn't know to connect to it or handle the results. Someone told me that I shouldn't consider myself a Software Engineer because I didn't know to how to do it. They said the API was well documented, required no authentication, and returned XML that I could easily parse. They said the documentation should be enough to figure out how to use the API. Isn't having a job title of Software Engineer the only consideration for being a Software Engineer?

  Hi I must have overlooked something completely obvious?? but my button displays its image and size correctly, but I simply can't get the Title to show up. The relevant snippet of code is here Official Sample App 2nd Edition The problem. I have a School model and am using the School name on the Show view as follows: <% provide(:title, @school.name) %> If my School has a & in the name, it is being replaced with &Amp in the browser title. Ryan Bates Railscasts site has a similiar title helper that solves this issue this way but it is using content_for instead of provide. Trying to adjust the Rails Tutorial helper, but having trouble getting it work properly. Works great expect for this issue.

  How can I create a plot title in ggplot2? Am I making a silly syntax error? The ggplot2 docs indicate that labs(title = 'foo') should work, but I can only get the arguments x='foo' and y='foo' to work with labs(). Neither ggtitle() nor title() worked either.   Hey guys I have a quick question, I have a dialog box that has multiple links with different attributes. Each time a link is clicked, the attribute src is printed inside of the dialog box so that each link has a unique output in the dialog. My problem is simply that only the first src title is in every box and I would like to change that as well with each click. I separated the line containing title to show the problem. • Wikipedia API: list=alllinks confusion

  I'm doing a research project for the summer and I've got to use get some data from Wikipedia, store it and then do some analysis on it. I'm using the Wikipedia API to gather the data and I've got that down pretty well. What my questions is in regards to the links-alllinks option in the API doc here After reading the description, both there and in the API itself (it's down and bit and I can't link directly to the section), I think I understand what it's supposed to return. However when I ran a query it gave me back something I didn't expect. Here's the query I ran: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&prop=revisions&titles=google&rvprop=ids|timestamp|user|comment|content&rvlimit=1&list=alllinks&alunique&allimit=40&format=xml Which in essence says: Get the last revision of the Google page, include the id, timestamp, user, comment and content of each revision, and return it in XML format. The allinks (I thought) should give me back a list of wikipedia pages which point to the google page (In this case the first 40 unique ones).   Possible Duplicate: Google doesn't seem to update the description or title of my homepage I had my domain for few days before I uploaded site to it, and it had one title, and then when I uploaded content it should get new title, but with my misunderstanding of WordPress it had blocked robots.txt and keyword with no-index and no-follow. But I removed that like 7 days ago, and I see in reports that Google bot is crawling over my site, but my site title isn't updating, it still has old domain title when site wasn't there... My robots.txt has now: User-agent: * Allow: / I have clear title tag on every page. How long does it take to update? Do I need to check something else?

• How to echo current document.title with Firefox Vimperator -> autocmd?

  When I try to do this :autocmd LocationChange .* echo document.title the first page that gets displayed makes no echo. If I proceed to the next tab, the title of the last tab gets echoed. Does anybody know how I can get for every landing on the page the title echoed instantly instead of when "leaving" the tab? And it only works every two times. If I go through my tabs 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 (next tab) the output will be (being at 1 currently) _blank Title of 1 _ Title of 3 _ Title of 5 _ Title of 7 _ (now being at tab 8) But I want Title of 1 Title of 2 ... Any ideas?

Add the os that I added on the menu.lst? How do I add the iso image(os) in the menu.lst? Before adding the .iso files I first made a folder named Windows xp sp2 then placed the .iso files in there. Please help, I think I need to add the folder name or the file name on the menu.lst but I don't know how

• MySQL: SELECT highest column value when WHERE finds similar entries

  My question is comparable to this one, but not quite the same. I have a database with a huge amount of books, with different editions of some of the same book titles. I'm looking for an SQL statement giving me the highest edition number of each of the titles I'm selecting with a WHERE clause (to find specific book series).
