  • Running Fedora 8, never upgraded. How to do so?

    - by TreyK
Hey all, I'm a student working on a website for my robotics team. I've recently decided to experiment with a node.js/CouchDB setup instead of our current LAMP configuration. While trying to install these systems, I was appalled to discover that our current version of Fedora (version 8) is almost two years past EOL. If I were to upgrade our server, what version of Fedora should I install, and how should I do this? Thanks, -Trey

  • How do I switch java versions to an earlier version in Fedora 17?

    - by JHutson456
I just installed Fedora 17. I'm setting up the Android Build Environment and need Java. I downloaded and installed jdk-6u32-linux-amd64.rpm I ran java -version and it spit out the correct version. Well a day or two later i tried my first compile in Fedora 17 and it complained about java and failed. I ran java -version again and low and behold it spits out $ java -version java version "1.7.0_03-icedtea" OpenJDK Runtime Environment (fedora-2.1.fc17.7-x86_64) OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 22.0-b10, mixed mode) I'm stumped. I mean, i've run the update/upgrade commands since i installed but i didn't think that updated full version revisions... So, I ran alternatives --config java and that only gave me the java 1.7 version. While digging around more I discovered that the recommended version of Java for the build environment is jdk-6u27-linux-x64-rpm.bin so I downloaded that from here: Oracle Download When I ran: sudo sh jdk-6u27-linux-x64-rpm.bin it returned: Unpacking... Checksumming... Extracting... UnZipSFX 5.50 of 17 February 2002, by Info-ZIP ([email protected]). inflating: jdk-6u27-linux-amd64.rpm inflating: sun-javadb-common-10.6.2-1.1.i386.rpm inflating: sun-javadb-core-10.6.2-1.1.i386.rpm inflating: sun-javadb-client-10.6.2-1.1.i386.rpm inflating: sun-javadb-demo-10.6.2-1.1.i386.rpm inflating: sun-javadb-docs-10.6.2-1.1.i386.rpm inflating: sun-javadb-javadoc-10.6.2-1.1.i386.rpm Preparing... ########################################### [100%] package jdk-2000:1.6.0_32-fcs.x86_64 (which is newer than jdk-2000:1.6.0_27-fcs.x86_64) is already installed Done. so now I'm confused. I ran: alternatives --config java again but it's still only returning 1.7 so I don't know what to do.I want to end up with 6u27 as the installed and functional version of the JDK. Thank you.

  • Can I ? - Develop C/C++ in Fedora 14 using GCC 4.4 and deploy in CentOS 5.2 using GCC 4.4

    - by Amit Phatarphekar
Hello - My production env runs CentOS 5.2 and 5.5 versions. I have to develop a new tool using C/C++ and deploy it on this production env. I was planning to use Fedora 14 on my desktop with GCC 4.4 to do the development with Eclipse IDE. And then later I want to deploy the executables to CentOS 5.2 or 5.5 The production env will have GCC 4.4 as well. Since both Fedora and CentOS are RHEL based, I thought this is possible. So can I do this? Or do I need to have CentOS 5.2/5.5 on my development desktop as well? Thanks Amit

  • Ubuntu Server 10.10 vs. Fedora Server 14 for Mono.NET app hosting in VM

    - by Abbas
Ubuntu Server 10.10 vs. Fedora Server 14 I want to create a web-server running Mono, MySQL 5.5 and OpenLDAP running as a VM (on VMWare Workstation). Searching “Ubuntu Server vs. Fedora Server” mostly yields flame wars and noise. There are a few good articles available but they are either out-of-date or don’t offer very convincing arguments. I know the answer is most likely to be “it depends” but I wanted to harness the collective wisdom on ServerFault and get opinions, experiences and factual information to the extent possible. My selection criteria would be (other than what is mentioned above): Ease of use Ease of development Reliability Security

  • How can I start an X11 session on my headless Fedora 13 server?

    - by DR
I have a small home server using Fedora 13 as operating system. Since the upgrade to Fedora 13 I cannot start the X11 server. (I need it to use vnc) When I try to start the server, both the nouveau and the original NVIDIA driver claim that there's no physical monitor attached (which is true) and that the X server cannot start because the initial display modes cannot be probed. I tried to manually add the display modes to xorg.conf but they seem to be ignored. Some forums suggest to simply use the VESA driver in this situation, but since I can't get it run either (different, more obscure message) I want to get it working with the nouveau driver as a matter of principle. Temporarily attaching a monitor would mean a lot of work for me ( 1 hour and currently it's almost 35°C/95°F in my home) I want to try that only if that definitely fixes the problem and stays that way if I remove the monitor again) How can I make the driver work without having a physical monitor attached? Thank you for your time and your help!

  • What is the cleanest way to upgrade Fedora and also my individual installs while keeping /home?

    - by Don
I am a professional programmer, using Fedora 10 (and a host of other packages individually installed). I use my system to telecommute. Every year or so, I go through the ritual dance, usually with a second computer and a KVM switch as I don't have office space for two monitors, to build the next version of Fedora and install all my favorite apps. Is there a better way? At least a nice way to keep track of what I need to 'add on' so that I don't have to manually install my app collection? Also, I keep /home on a separate raid-ed drive set so I can also fall prey to 'old-config-file-itis'.

  • Will learning to use Fedora also teach me my way around Redhat (CentOS)?

    - by Matt Untsaiyi
I want to dive into the open source world and start using a Linux distro while learning to program. I've looked over the options and it pretty much boils down to Fedora or CentOS. The reasoning behind it is I'm hoping to kill two birds with one stone... Redhat seems to be "the choice" for servers, so I figure as I learn to program, I can also learn my way around Linux... or Redhat more specifically... and get that under my belt too. I want to use Fedora, and be on the frontier of new software (since I'm not doing anything critical), but if it's completely different than Redhat I'd rather just use CentOS. So is it? Or can I use one and know the other?

  • Fedora 14 - Error 5 - No space on Disk - After installation.

    - by amitahire
I am new to Fedora, am still figure my way through it. I was going about tweaking it and preparing it to my needs, While installing through yum I dont have much other than the fact that I have to search for the packages. But when I open "Add/remove software" of Fedora. I am greeted with " No space left on the disk" and when I seek for more details it says " Disk Error :[errno 5] Input/output error" I did some research and I saw that it usually occurs during installation, but here I have successfully installed it. Can someone help me with it? Later on I even had notification of the same warning. And mind you I got loads of free space. Thanks for the help

  • How to migrate Fedora DS (389 DS) to a new machine?

    - by zengr
Hello, I am trying to migrate a Fedora DS (1.2.2) to a new server (1.2.7.5). The process has been painful to say the least. The old server (1.2.2) was also an upgrade from an old fedora DS setup, so it does not contain migrate-ds-admin.pl. I found this question, but the URL does not open. I am aware that I need to use migrate-ds-admin.pl, but I am clueless. How do I use it? I assume this works like this: 1. Copy migrate-ds-admin.pl from server which has 1.2.7 to 1.2.2 2. Run migrate-ds-admin.pl to export the schema+ldif from 1.2.2 3. Import the schema+ldif to 1.2.7 using migrate-ds-admin.pl. If the above is true, then what parameters are need for export and import? Note: ./ldif2db -n NetscapeRoot -i /root/NetscapeRoot.ldif ./ldif2db -n userRoot -i /root/userRoot.ldif The above two commands work like a charm, but since the schema (custom schema) is not migrated, I see alot of errors during import.

If I am using NetworkManager, do i need to turn off network service? Similarly, if I am using network service, do I need to turn off NetworkManager? Will they conflict with each other if I use both application at the same time?

  • xen-create-image does not create inird or initramfs image and domU does not starts with system image

    - by user219372
I have Fedora 19 as Dom0. To create image I run # xen-create-image --hostname=debian-wheezy --memory=512Mb --dhcp --size=20Gb --swap=512Mb --dir=/xen --arch=amd64 --dist=wheezy After generation finished I start vm and see: # xl create /etc/xen/debian-wheezy.cfg Parsing config from /etc/xen/debian-wheezy.cfg libxl: error: libxl_dom.c:409:libxl__build_pv: xc_dom_ramdisk_file failed: No such file or directory libxl: error: libxl_create.c:919:domcreate_rebuild_done: cannot (re-)build domain: -3 In the /etc/xen/debian-wheezy.cfg i have # # Kernel + memory size # kernel = '/boot/vmlinuz-3.11.2-201.fc19.x86_64' ramdisk = '/boot/initrd.img-3.11.2-201.fc19.x86_64' and ls -1 /boot/*201* shows /boot/config-3.11.2-201.fc19.x86_64 /boot/initramfs-3.11.2-201.fc19.x86_64.img /boot/System.map-3.11.2-201.fc19.x86_64 /boot/vmlinuz-3.11.2-201.fc19.x86_64 Then if I fix ramdisk directive in .cfg file to /boot/initramfs-3.11.2-201.fc19.x86_64.img vm will start but os inside will not boot. • Why do I need to create a bios-grub partition when I install 12.04?

    - by raj
Is the bios-grub partition in Ubuntu 12.04 mandatory? I have used 11.04, 11.10 and 12.04, But I was never asked for this. Today I tried a fresh installation of Ubuntu 12.04 and for the first time I was asked for this Grub partition of minimum 1Mb. I first tried to reinstall 12.04, but the error continued. So I installed Fedora 16, Keeping all partitions as they were (replaced Ubuntu with Fedora), And then did another fresh installation of 12.04. Is it ok to continue with this grub partition or is there a fault in my system's hardware? If this is a (hardware) fault, how can I fix it? I'm using a Lenovo S10-2 Ideapad. The only OS right now installed is Ubuntu 12.04. well, let me answer. It was /usr/bin/xorg issue that I had with firstly installed precise. I used fedora16 basically for removing precise totally (my experience tells me ubuntu can't completely erase and reinstall by itself). this 1mb grub is created by fedora. I then wanted to remove it while reinstalling ubuntu but got caution bootloader may fail. hence I have to keep this 1mb drive. but prior to yesterday, i used both fedora and ubuntu, even same CDs, but had no such partition. my question is if this partition is necessary or not? if not, how can i safely remove it from my system? Am using only ubuntu 12.04 -- before and after (now).
