• Which is more important in a web application code promotion hierarchy? production environment to repo equivalence or unidirectional propagation?

  Lets say you have a code promotion hierarchy consisting of several environments, (the polar end) two of which are development (dev) and production (prod). Lets say you also have a web application where important (but not developer controlled) files are created (and perhaps altered) in the production environment. Lets say that you (or someone above you) decided that the files which are controlled/created/altered/deleted in the production environment needed to go into the repository. Which of the following two sets of practice / approaches do you find best: Committing these non-developed file modifications made in the production environment so that the repository reflects the production environment as closely and as often as possible. Generally ignoring the non-developed production environment alterations, placing confidence in backups to restore the production environment should it be harmed, and keeping a resolution to avoid pushing developments through the promotion hierarchy in the reverse direction (avoiding pushing from prod to dev), only committing the files found in the production environment if they were absolutely necessary in other environments for development. So, 1 or 2, and why? PS - I am currently slightly biased toward maintaining production environment to repository equivalence (option 1), but I keep an open mind and would accept an answer supporting either.

• How to get Unity working on dual gpu laptop?

  I recently bought a new laptop (Asus X53S series) that has two GPUs, an NVidia GeForce GT 540M and an integrated Intel GPU (I believe it's called Intel HD graphics 3000). I installed the recommended restricted NVidia drivers after a clean Ubuntu 11.10 install. In the 'additional drivers' program I get the message: "This driver is enabled and in use", although when I try to open the NVidia X Server Settings it says "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver." which seems to be the case since Ubuntu only starts using Unity 2D. I've had the same issue in 11.04 and I was forced to use the nouveau driver just to get unity working, but since I get quite a few crashes with it I really want to get the propriety driver working this time around. Since I've never had this issue with older laptops, I can only assume it is caused due to the dual gpu configuration. How do I get Ubuntu to use the propriety drivers, or is there any workaround to get the integrated Intel GPU to be ignored by Ubuntu? Alternatively, has anyone got Unity working with a similar setup?

• Character movement on a 2D tile map

  I'm working at making a HTML5 game. Top down, closest thing I can equate it to is the gameboy zeldas, but open world and no rooms. What I have so far is a procedurally generated map in a multi dimensional array. And a starting position on the map. Along with this I have an array of movable and non movable tile ID's. I also have a class for my player and have him being rendered out in the center of the starting tile. My problem however is getting the movement sorted out for the player. I want to be able to have the character free move around the map (pixel by pixel essentially) ontop of this 2D generated world. Ideally this would allow the user to move around the walk able area of the canvas. this is simple enough for me to do, but I am having problems now moving the world. If the user is 20% from the edge of the screen i want the world to start panning in the direction the player is heading. But I'm rather lacking in ideas of how to do this. I've looked around for some tutorials, but am coming up blank on ideas of how to generate the playable area (zoomed in) and to then move this generated area under the player when they reach near the end of the screen. My current idea was to generate a certain amount of tiles full size to fill the screen and place the player i the middle. Then when the user approaches the edge of the screen start generating the tiles offset by the distance moved and the direction. I can kind of see this working but I really have no idea if this is the best or easiest to code of methods for generating the world. sorry for the lack of code but I'm still just in the theory stages of working this all out.

• Removed Java replaced with newest "Sun Java", disc won't boot, and won't let me re-install grub using boot repair disc

  Had a minor problem with my Stock market platform. Set-up screen would freeze program. Called their tech support, got their "Linux guy", who advised remove all Java and replace, not with synaptic version, but newest Sun Java. After removing, computer auto rebooted, and went to blue mem-test screen. Showed no errors, but couldn't get back in. Tried two versions of boot repair disc from iso (checked md5sum, showed good.), but fix aborted, giving apt-error detected. Opened a terminal and typed (or copy/paste): sudo chroot "/mnt/boot-sav/sda1" apt-get -f install. My system is Ubuntu 12.04. Had a few very minor issues from install, all fixed. Also added some of my favorite gnome tricks just to make life easier, but none that could have caused this. Added script to add shortcuts to desktop, open terminal in any menu from inside it, access root terminal, etc. System was firewalled and using avast antivirus (o.k., I'm paranoid. Used to do Windows sys-op and security.) But relative newbie to Linux.

• Fn key sticks down

  Just bought my significant other a shiny new Samsung Q330 13" netbook, stuck an OCZ Agility in it and installed Maverick. Just as a quick aside, this is a devastating combination. Graphics work perfectly and it cold-boots to desktop in about 7 seconds. Very quick. But (common to laptops) I've got a couple of problems. I'll start with the most problematic and start a new thread for the other. Like a lot of laptops, there is a Fn (function) modifier to allow some keys to have another purpose. When I tried to alter the brightness of the screen by tapping Fn+Down, it worked but kept on going until it was as dim as it could go. I tapped Fn+Up and it went to the other extreme. After that the entire keyboard ceases to work properly because the Fn modifier appears to be locked. Additionally, and as a direct side effect, I think, clicking on things doesn't result in a standard result. It's as if control is being held. A reboot is the only thing that seems to fix these problems. This isn't a problem if you don't touch the Fn key but as there are two of them on the keyboard, an accident is going to happen sooner than later, requiring a reboot (and probably some data loss). I don't have a lot of experience with laptops (I prefer my hulking great desktop) so this isn't my area of expertise. I'm open to all suggestions, even disabling the two Fn keys until we can find a better solution.

The Essbase Excel Add In is about to be de-continued (see  Doc ID 1466700.1) in January '13. The (already out) version 11.1.2.2.x of the Excel Add In must be considered the last release of this particular program (Unless the guys from Applied OLAP bring out their own version next to the openOffice Add In that they already sport). As expected, SmartView achieved parity in functionality with Release 11.1.2.1.102 and ever since then it was just a question of time when our old buddy would get the shoe. For all users out there like me that have known and worked with the Excel Add In for the last decade(s) this is a loss. SmartView may have functionality parity, and may altogether be the stronger, open technology - capable of Planning forms, connection to HFM etc. .But (from my personal point of view) it will not give the end user the same direct access to his databases, with nothing between him and his Essbase Server. Of course it was to be expected that only one of the two could survive and it was obvious that this would be SmartView, so this does not come as a surprise. Still.A minute for an old friend . . . . . . Thank you, and let us look forward! Unless you had other plans for the upcoming season, why not spend it investigating SmartView for your Essbase interaction needs. We hear that the days between Christmas and new year hold unlimited potential to test out new things. Or take it as a new year resolution: "I will switch to SmartView at the earliest possible moment".

The demo site requires internet access because it still links to pages and resources of the real site. • How to Deliberately Practice Software Engineering?

  I just finished reading this recent article. It's a very interesting read, and it makes some great points. The point that specifically jumped out at me was this: The difference was in how they spent this [equal] time. The elite players were spending almost three times more hours than the average players on deliberate practice — the uncomfortable, methodical work of stretching your ability. This article (if you care not to read it) is discussing violin players. Of course, being a software engineer, my mind turned towards software ability. Granted, there are some very naturally talented individuals out there, but time and time again, it is those folks who stretch their abilities through deliberate practice that really become exceptional at their craft. My question is - how would one go about practicing the "scales" of software engineering and computer science? When I practice the piano, I will spend more of my time on scales and less on a fun song. How can I do the same in developing software? To head off early answers, I don't feel that "work on an open source project," and similar answers, is really right. Sure...that can improve your skills, but you could just as easily get stuck focusing on something that is unimportant to your craft as a whole. It can become the equivalent of learning "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" and never being able to play Chopin. So, again, I ask - how would you suggest that someone deliberately practice software engineering?

• Working Abroad Advice Needed

  Hi, First of all, Happy New Year everybody! I wish you for 2011 all the best! For several years I was thinking about to work abroad, and I want to make this step(to work in a/several foreign countries, for several years). I am a Software Developer with a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science, with a +4 years of experience in Delphi(and small working experience in other programming languages). Until now I've applied at aprox. 100 positions over the world, and I've been contacted by 4-5 hiring managers. Our technical discussions went good, but then we reached at working visa 'problem'. I don't have legal/health problems, but I don't poses a working permit in other countries except Romania. I've been reading several forums concerning the working visas (here I take out working visa for US or other 'hard to get visa' countries), and there are several steps which companies must do (so I can take out the bureaucracy problem) to make the papers. Concerning the cost of a visa, this goes up to one medium salary from that country(in most of the cases). I've been working for the last years with different clients, from a wide variety of countries, and I don't believe I will have problems with integration in a foreign country So, the problem is that the market don't need Delphi Developers (there is a small amount of open positions on the recruiting sites), and I should start learning other programming language(all the time is better to know other programming languages - but to master it, requires some time) with a higher market 'rank' (Java/C#/etc), OR the problem is only concerning the working visa, and maybe the reticence of the employer to foreign possible candidates? I'm asking this especially for those users who made this step in their life or they want to make it in the future. Best regards,

• from MS Biology to BS Computer Science [on hold]

  I'm Marco from Italy and I'd like to ask you a piece of advice about my career. I hold a Ms degree in Biology, I enjoyed a lot studying it and I got very good grades but I didn't know what to do with my degree in the real life. Few months ago, I began to read a book about Python programming (Introduction to Computer Science, Zelle J.) and I've great fun learning Python as a beginner, I wake up in the morning thinking about doing excersies and writing simple programs with python :) I'm also watching free lectures from MIT open courseware, and I'm feeling a certain degree of regrets for never asking myself what was computer science, since it seems to me it's a magic world. After weeks of doubts, I made a move :) I applied for a CS bachelor degree abroad, I got an interview and I'm going to start this great adventure next September. I feel incredibly excited at it, but a little bit scared too. Scared because sometimes I think I'm making a great mistake for my life restarting from a bachelor in a completely different area of study. Sometimes I hear people saying the IT market is bad, sometimes I hear other ones saying quite the opposite instead. Moreover, some colleagues of mine suggested me to try to get into Bioinformatics, instead of CS. My question is: I want to really discover if CS is for me, I mean the passion of my life. I know I'm just a beginner and I can't say nothing about it yet. What do you suggest me: CS or Bioinformatics? If I get a Bs in CS, could I get into bioinformatics without relevant experience, taking into account I have a Ms Biology degree? Any comment is appreciated, thanks in advance.

• Announcing Spacewalk Support for Oracle Linux Basic and Premier Customers

  Over the years, customers migrating to Oracle Linux have asked for options to provide a transitional solution for their existing system management tools (such as Red Hat Satellite Server) while evaluating and planning migrations to Oracle's Enterprise Manager, which is offered at no additional charge with Oracle Linux Support Subscriptions.  Based on this request, we are pleased to announce support for the open-source community project, Spacewalk, which is the basis for both Red Hat Satellite Server and SUSE Manager.  Effective today, customers with Oracle Linux Basic and Premier Support subscriptions have access to a fully supported Spacewalk build which can be setup to easily manage Oracle Linux systems.   Spacewalk support for Oracle Linux requires Oracle Linux 6, x86_64 for the server and provides support for Oracle Linux 5 and Oracle Linux 6 (x86, x86_64) clients.  This solution requires Oracle Database 11g Release 2 as the  supported database repository for Spacewalk with Oracle Linux.  Within the next several weeks, a limited use license for the Oracle Database will be included with this offer.  Until this is complete, customers may use an existing Oracle database license or they may begin by downloading a 30-day trial license from eDelivery.  Customers with Oracle Linux Basic and Premier subscriptions will automatically have access to the channel hosting the supported build.  Please review the release notes for further instructions. • How can I debug VNC screen repainting issues?

  I have what some might consider a trivial use for VNC, but I'd like to get it to work and it's technically interesting to me. My use case is that I'd like sometimes to be able to control my desktop from my living room while watching tv. The desktop runs Ubuntu, currently 12.04, but that may change soon. I'm using the default Vino server. I'd like to control it from my IPad and I have a nicely performing WiFi. I got the well-regarded (if reviews can be believed) app Vnc Viewer for the iPad. It's not working as well as I'd hoped. The problem is the speed of repainting. It's abysmally slow. I can click a close button, walk over to the desktop and see that the window has closed, but on the iPad, the VNC Client won't show the close for minutes if ever. I've noticed that CLOSING windows takes a lot longer to update than to open them. So the question is is this primarily client or server-caused? And if server-caused what can be done about it? Is Vino the best client or is something else better? Thanks

• How do I connect to Ubuntu One after changing the password?

  I changed my password for Ubuntu One using the Web interface, and added a new computer. Since then, the old computer does not synchronize with Ubuntu One. It doesn't show any error messages or such, but files uploaded from the web interface or changed on the newly added computer don't appear/change on the old computer. I guess that it can't connect because it is still using the old password. The problem is that I can't find an interface to change the password the client is using to connect to the service. The "manage account" option opens the Web interface. I looked into the keyring, and found the key for Ubuntu One, but there I only see an encrypted version of the password, so I can't change it there. So what is the correct way to tell my client that my account password has changed? Edit this is what I see when I open Preferences -- Ubuntu One. Is there something wrong with it? It also stubbornly insists that it has successfully synchronized. But the files I have added from other computers are not in my Ubuntu One folder.

• How to handle editing a large file for a non-technical user

  I have a client who is given a tab delimited .txt file containing hundreds of thousands of rows. I have a user story as follows: As a user I want to take the text file and add a new value at the end of each line which contains the concatenated value of two of the columns. for example if the file read text_one text_two I need to output the following (preferably to a .txt file) text_one text_two text_onetext_two My first approach was to ask the vendor supplying the file to do the concatenation before providing the file, the easiest way to solve a problem is to eliminate it right? however they are very uncooperative and have point blank refused. I've looked at building a simple javascript application that does this client side so a non-technical user could select the file using a file selector. This approach has a few problems The file could be over a GB in size and so can't be loaded straight into memory, I've tried and the browser crashes There is no means to write a file in javascript so I'd need to output the content to the screen and have the user save it (somehow) I was thinking if I could get around the filesize limitations I could just output the edited content to the page and have the user save the page as a .txt file, however I think there is a better way than using javascript that will still accommodate the users lack of technical know-how. Please consider this question to be stack agnostic, but bear in mind that a nice little shell script or python script would be deemed unsuitable for a non technical user unless there is a way of "packaging" it nicely for a non-technical user. Updates The file is too large to open in excel. The process needs to be run weekly, but it doesn't require scheduling or automation...(yet)

• Is there a Source Insight alternative?

  I am not a developer, but for my work I trace a lot of codes. It is actually rather difficult reading other people's code, especially for bigger projects. Source Insight is a great application that stores all the symbols in a data base, so you can see a new function being called, click on it and see how the function is written. You can see all the referrer of a object or jump to a caller. You don't need to break the train of thought and think up shell commands just to find these things every time you ran into a new variable/structure/function from some other files. I have it running on WINE, but there are little glitches that sometimes gets in the way. I know people will mention C-scope, I've tried it, but it really isn't the same. So, with so many huge open source projects out there for Ubuntu, are there native tools to help read them efficiently? EDIT: Thanks for the suggestions, but does CODE::BLOCKS or CodeLite provide abilities to see the function that the mouse clicked on without jumping to it, so I can see the caller and callee at the same time?

• Ubuntu unstable, showing awkward behavior

  Let me start off by saying that this problem can't be described in such a way that allows me to find other topics, which have some relevance to this problem. That's why I created this question. In case this question might have been asked before, I apologize. So what is the problem: My computer (Intel Core I5 2500K - with HD3000 graphics -, 6 gb DDR, 1 SSD, 3 HDD's and an Asus P8Z68 mobo) runs Windows on the SDD. But I decided to give Ubuntu a chance to be my daily OS for basic needs since it's open source and I find it a handicap of not being able to work with it. I decided to run the windows installer and install Ubuntu 12.04 to my 320 Gb hdd which was not being used in my computer. After installing it and booting it, it worked great! I spent the rest of the day/night using it, and falling for it. Great, today I booted Ubuntu (I had the choice in the bootloader as I expected). It asked me for my login and it started logging in. Now, after a few (literally) minutes of letting it "boot" I tried determining the cause of this. What I've figured out so far: When I left click on my desktop it freezes completely for a few seconds I have something like tearing in the left side menu (in games, you know) when I move my mouse around It runs well when just hovering around with my mouse, but from the point I click on something it freezes. What have I tried? I ran a HD Tune diagnostic on the HDD but the performance seems to be very close to the stock values, so I'm taking it as a good HDD. I'm trying to get to the drivers update panel for Ubuntu, but with the state it's in, it's taking a lot of time.. Could anyone point me in a direction for troubleshooting this? I'm not really a noob at all, just when using Linux.. :) Thanks in advance! Christophe,

  Many websites display a news ticker of one sort or another. A news ticker is a user interface element that displays a subset of a list of items, cycling through them one at a time after a set interval. For example, on Cisco's website there is a news ticker that shows the company's latest news items. Each news item is a one sentence link, such as "Desktop Virtualization Gathers Steam," or "Cisco Reports First Quarter Earnings." Clicking a headline whisks you to a page that shows the full story. Cisco's news ticker shows one headline at a time; every few seconds the currently displayed headline fades out and the next one appears. In total, Cisco has five different headlines - the ticker displays each of the five and then starts back from the beginning. This article is the first in a series that explores how to create your own news ticker widget using jQuery and ASP.NET. jQuery is a free, popular, open-source JavaScript library that simplifies many common client-side tasks, like event handling, DOM manipulation, and Ajax. • Welcome to the newly merged JCP EC!

  As part of the JCP.Next effort, the second JSR as part of the JCP program reforms, JSR 355, Executive Committee (EC) Merge, will take effect on Tuesday as JCP 2.9. The first in the effort was JSR 348, which took effect as JCP 2.8 in October 2011. EC members guide the evolution of the Java technologies by approving and voting on all technology proposals (Java Specification Requests, or JSRs). They are also responsible for defining the JCP's rules of governance and the legal agreement between members and the organization. They provide guidance to the Program Management Office (PMO) and they represent the interests of the JCP to the broader community. Starting on Tuesday, 13 November, JCP 2.9 is in effect, and the EC is merged from two ECs -- one representing Java SE/EE and one representing Java ME -- to one merged EC. IBM and Oracle each gave up one of their two seats (one per EC) and the terms expired for four members who did not run for re-election: AT&T, Deutsch Telekom, Siemens and Vodafone. All four remain JCP members. In addition, the seat occupied by RIM was forfeited due to lack of participation in October 2012. The JCP values the organizations and representatives for their contribution to the JCP EC, and looks forward to their continued participation in the JCP Program. The complete listing of the EC, 24 members total at the moment, is now available. • scary islamic messages on mouse in libreoffice - a virus?

  This is weird. Today I opened an excel file with libre office. Suddenly I saw the mouse changed color, and stuck to it was a message in Arabic, which changed every second in a loop. I can actually read Arabic so I immediatly recognized it as Islamic messages praising Allah (including the Takbir). Here's a screenshot: At first I thought this was something with the file, but then I saw that this happens with any libre office program (but only libre-office programs), and even when they're open, it only changes the mouse when it's hovering over the libre program, and goes back to normal anywhere else. Also, re-installing did not help. I tried running software updater - but I got an error where it couldn't load some steam repositories, but that seems like a coincidence: Failed to fetch http://repo.steampowered.com/steam/dists/precise/steam/i18n/Translation-en_US Failed to fetch http://repo.steampowered.com/steam/dists/precise/steam/i18n/Translation-en Here's another hint - I tried taking several screenshots of several messages, but they all ended up showing the same message (the one above). Hopefully that means anything. I should note I haven't installed anything fishy lately, and I hardly ever use libre office at all (I prefer Google Drive whenever I need to work with documents), so I'm really unsure as to how this happened. Anyway, this is scary. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

• Data indexing frameworks fit for large E-Commerce applications

  we wrote and still maintain a large E-Commerce application. Our feature list resembles what you would expect from most shops. We'd like to improve some of our features, and now the search/suggestion list functionality (enter some letters, a JScripted suggestion list appears) has caught our eye. Currently, we use http://xapian.org/. It has some drawbacks. Firstly, it's not actually the right solution. It has been created to index documents, not ever-changing data in a granularity that an E-Commerce application would need. Secondly, the load on the database is significant when we reindex all data every night. We'd like a framework that has been designed for indexing database data, which can add to the index easily and without much load, which can supply data changes in the backoffice quickly to the frontend without much load and delay. I'm aware of the fact that Xapian is Open Source and even Free Software, so we could adapt it to our needs if we decided to invest the time and manpower. But taking a quick look around for a solution more suited seems fair, right? Oh, and commercial applications are fine, too. FOSS is not required. Thanks a bunch.

  I got EXTREMELY lucky last week and won an HP Mini 311 notebook from a Microsoft Tag Twitter contest. I did my required tweet to enter last Tuesday, and one hour later received notification that I had won the weekly drawing. Apparently you can tweet up to 500 times (I pity the followers of those who do that), so it was really lucky that I won, and I sympathize with those who had been really trying. I was vaguely aware of those pastel-y triangle-y square things that look like someone put one of Don Johnson’s Miami Vice outfits through a shredder, and knew that the company I work for (one of the world’s largest consumer products companies) was looking into putting them on our products, packaging and advertising, but didn’t know much more about the technology. I thought they were just an improvement over bar codes, and would be used in retail store scanners, but I was mistaken. These tags are meant to be scanned by consumers using their mobile phones, to get instant access to information, websites, reviews, etc. Scanning a tag can open a web page, import a contact card, or dial a phone number, play a video… Tag reader software can be installed on Windows Mobile, iPhone, Symbian, Blackberry, Android, J2ME, and other phones (and I suspect that it will be available for Windows Phone 7 also :). There are built-in tracking, metrics and analysis tools, to help companies using Tag make decisions about their marketing expenditures. (And they don’t have to look Miami Vice-y – They can be customized to reflect the personality of the person or a brand.) Looks like interesting stuff. • Discs in DVD Drive not being read

  Does anyone have an experience with Ubuntu that is no longer reading discs in the DVD drive? This is my first time Ubuntu does not see the disc :| The disc is fine and works on my other Ubuntu computers. The drive is there and powered. I can even type in eject in a terminal and the drive will open. Using the command: sudo lshw -C disk I am able to see info about my drive too. Actually BOTH of my internal DVD drives cannot read discs anymore.
