• Say What? Podcasting As Part of Your Content Marketing

  What do you usually do in your car on the way to work?  Sing along to radio? Stream Pandora or iHeartRadio? Talk on the phone? Sit in total silence? Whatever it is you do, you could be using that time to make yourself an expert in any range of topics…using podcasts. We invite you to follow or subscribe to the daily Oracle Social Spotlight podcast, a quick roundup of the day’s top stories around social marketing and the social networks. After podcasts arrived in 2004, growth was steady but slow. The concept was strong: anyone with a passion for any subject could make a show for anyone who cared to listen. Enter the smartphone, iTunes, new podcasting platforms, and social, and podcasting became easier than ever and made more sense for both podcasters and listeners. Stats show 1 in 5 smartphone owners are podcast consumers and 29% of Americans have listened to a podcast. The potential audience is also larger than ever. “Baked in” podcast apps on over 200 million devices expose users to volumes of audio content with just a tap. 97 million Americans are driving to work every day by themselves. And 38% of Americans listen to audio on a digital device each week, a number that’s projected to double by 2015. Does that mean your brand should be podcasting? That’s part of a larger discussion about your overall content strategy, provided you have one. But if you do and podcasting is a component of it, here are some things to keep in mind: Don’t podcast just to do it. Podcast because you thought of a show customers and prospects will like that they can’t get anywhere else. Sound quality matters. Good microphones are not expensive. Bad sound is annoying, makes your brand feel cheap, and will turn today’s sophisticated ears off. The host matters. Many think they belong on the radio. Few actually do. Your brand’s host should be comfortable & likeable. A top advantage of a podcast is people can bond with a real person. It’s a trust opportunity, so don’t take it lightly. The content matters. “All killer, no filler” means don’t allow babbling just to fill enough time for an episode. Value the listeners’ time, because that time is hard to get. Put time, effort and creativity into it. Sure you’re a business, but you’re competing with content from professional media and showbiz producers. If you can include music, sound effects, and things that amuse the ears, do it. If you start, be consistent. The #1 flaw in podcasting is when listeners can’t count on another episode or don’t know when it’s coming. Don’t skip doing shows just because you can. Get committed. Get your cover art right. Podcasting is about audio, but people shop for podcasts by glancing through graphics. Yours has to be professional, cool, and informative to get listeners interested. Cross-promote your podcast on all your channels. The competition for listeners is fierce, so if you have existing audiences you can leverage to launch your show, use them. Optimize it for mobile. Assume that’s where most listening will take place. If you’re using one of the podcast platform apps, you should be in good shape. Frankly, the percentage of brands that are podcasting is quite low, and that’s okay. Once you move beyond blogging and start connecting with real voices, poor execution can do damage. But more (32%) marketers want to learn how to use podcasting, and more (23%) were increasing their podcasting throughout this year. Bottom line, you want to share your brand’s message and stories wherever your audience might be and in whatever way they prefer to take in content. • :focus in IE not working

  Hey, I've created a site with CSS that requires the :focus pseudo class. I change the 'filter' and 'background-image' effects when a textbox is selected (i.e. has focus). This works in Chrome/FF, but doesn't seem to work in IE8 (and, presumable, previous versions if IE). I tried to look for answers, and have tried to use :active - but that doesn't work. Is there a way of changing attributes such as 'filter' using psuedo-classes? Failing that, can I do it in JS with the OnClick event? Thanks

• Call up last exception on an ASP.NET error page.

  I've got an error page here SiteError.aspx and it's configured correctly in the web.config to go there when unhandled exceptions are encountered. I want to use this page to log the exception that triggered it as well because I only want to LOG the errors that the users encounter (i.e. if SiteError.aspx is ever hit.) This is the code I Have: In the OnLoad(...) in SiteError.aspx Exception lastEx = Context.Server.GetLastError(); if (lastEx != null) log.Error("A site error was encountered", lastEx); However, my log is never showing up in my Output, and If i breakpoint on line 2 (in this example) code execution is never interupted (after letting the exception clear to ASP.NET handling in the debugger.

  The animation-enabled example in the SimpleModal site has this animation: 1. Fade in the overlay 2. Just display the modal 2. Fade in the overlay Alas, simply removing the 2nd parameter of dialog.overlay.fadeIn() from the code above doesn't work. I also tried removing the parameters of dialog.container.show(), also changing it to dialog.container.open(). I've tried other combinations of the code, to no avail. How do I achieve the animation that I wish?

• Using TFSBuild to publish ClickOnce files that include prerequisites

  I have declared an MSBuild tag in my TFSBuild project in order to publish ClickOnce files for my project. WSE 3.0 and .Net 3.0 are both pre-requisites for the application, so in Visual Studio I have ticked those as pre-requisites. When I build from Visual Studio, it creates a setup.exe file that I can publish to my web site. When you browse to this setup.exe file it installs WSE3.0 and .Net 3.0 and then continues to install my application, which works well. If I get TFS to create the click once files using the MSBuild tag in the TFSBuild file, it creates the setup.exe file, which I can publish to my website in the same way (along with all the other ClickOnce files). When I browse to setup.exe now, however, the prerequisites don't get installed and therefore my program does not run. Does anyone know how to get TFS to build a correct setup.exe file that properly bootstraps my prerequisites?

Is there any php function or class that I can use to generate tree structure for my data????   We're looking for a cheap-to-free "off the shelf" ASP.NET catalogue application, that will meet the following requirements: Support two kinds of listings: Suppliers of Services Suppliers of Products, and their Products Suppliers can be categorised by: Area of specialisation - including sub-categories Location Other data, e.g. where listing came from Versioning of supplier/product details Easy to use management interface Use masterpages so we can drop it into our existing site layout Run on a Windows 2003 server, with .NET 3.5 installed In an ideal world, the following additional requirements might be met: Suppliers can manage their own listings Other products that are available to us (that will obviously need some additional development to meet these requirements) are: Content Management System (MS) Commerce Server - bear in mind we're not selling the products/suppliers, just listing them Simple DB application. I'm happy to knock something up in MCMS/simple DB, I'm just looking to see if anyone's had any experience with off the shelf apps that could save us some time. • Detecting first time login of user into application (Google Appengine)

  My app requires users to login using their google account. I have this set in my App.yamp file: url: /user/.* script: user.py login: required Now when any user tries to access files under /user/secret.py he will need to authenticate via google, which will redirect the user back to /user/secret.py after successful authentication. Now the problem I am facing is when the user is redirected back to the app, I cannot be sure if this is the first time the user has logged in or is it a regular user to my site who has come back again from just the user object which google passes using users.get_current_user() . I thus need to maintain state in the datastore to check if the user already exists or not everytime. If he does not exist i need to create a new entry with other application specific settings. My question is: Is there some easier way to handle this? without having to query the datastore to figure if this is a first time user or a regular one?

  I have a website that has a number of URLs that people use to connect to that site (uses the bindings on the IIS website and everything works as intended): http://www.sample.com http://sample.com https://www.sample.com http://xyz.sample.com http://oldurl.com Now what I want to do is have all of the URLs go to https://www.sample.com - so if you type in "http://xyz.sample.com" or "sample.com" you should go to https://www.sample.com The question is what is the best mechanism to do this? I have one possible solution (which I will put as an answer to this question), but I get the feeling that there might be another, better solution available.

  Hi all, I'm looking to revamp our mobile site with something simple for phones below the ambiguous smart phone category and something a little more interesting for the phones above this category. I'm not interested in WAP/WML for this project. I'm building a ASP.Net 4 MCV 2 app and using MBDF What I'd like to know is how best to define this differentiation when using MBDF? Screen size, Javascript, SpportsTouchScreen etc. are all in MBDF along with others but I'm not sure where to draw the line and where the data is most accurate for the broad number of devices. What do those of you out there developing for this spread of hardware & software split on? Thanks, Denis P.S. I've done my research on xHTML MP1.0 - 1.2 and the best practises for implementation to ensure broad coverage but I don't want to restrict the newer phones out there to what the base line can see.

• What technical/legal responsibilities do I have when hosting images uploaded by others?

  You may argue that this question has a legal flavor to it, and that would be correct. Still, it is also a question from a developer's perspective that may help others. I'm building an image community web site/application. Users can upload images. During upload, users have to select the license (copyrighted, attribution non-commercial or public domain). No matter which license they choose, it is just a piece of data. No matter the license, all users can view all images and also download all images, as you normally do on websites. My question is: what responsibility do I have as a "platform" to comply with these licenses? Do I need to actively prevent certain actions on these images, and into what extend? Is displaying the license enough to be legally safe? What if one of my users uploads images for which he has no license? Is it enough to just implement a "report this" feature?

  Can anybody tell me any "free online hosted database servers" (don't know if that is the correct term) where we can do query testing and all those things that we can do on tools like PhpMyAdmin? does something like that exist? Like we have http://jsfiddle.net/ for testing js codes. I checked http://sqlzoo.net/ but this is very much limited and there are some predefined tables in some given examples on which we can alter things. That's all. It does not allow me to do a lots of other things like creating tables etc. A nice resource - PhpMyAdmin's demo site . Use the latest stable version here. You have full control over the MySQL server, however you should not change root, debian-sys-maint or pma user password or limit their permissions. If you do so, demo can not be accessed until privileges are restored, so you just break things for you and other users.

• Open Id XRDS Discovery

  I am working with Open Id, just playing around making a class to interact / auth Open Id's on my site (in PHP). I know there are a few other Libraries (like RPX), but I want to use my own (its good to keep help better understand the protocol and whether its right for me). The question I have relates to the Open Id discovery sequence. Basically I have reached the point where I am looking at using the XRDS doc to get the local identity (openid.identity) from the claimed identity (openid.claimed_id). My question is, do I have to make a cURL request to get the XRDS Location (X-XRDS-location) and then make another cURL request to get the actual XRDS doc?? It seems like with a DUMB request I only make one cURL request and get the Open Id Server, but have to make two to use the XRDS Smart method. Just doesn't seem right, can anyone else give me some info.

  Hi, I'm looking to implement a tag system like how SO uses on their site, where users can specify multiple tag words. However, on top of all the other autocomplete functions available as jquery plugins, I also want to allow users to enter new words not in the database. Does anyone know of any plugin that can do that? Or if there isn't, how one can add that functionality to an existing autocomplete function?   Hey all Basically I want to replicate the page changing effect found here, at http://timvandamme.com/ But instead of using #values I want to use PHP includes, mainly because I want the site to be as uber-seo-friendly as possible... but still have this nice effect. So is there a way of doing this? I have a main index file which includes other php files in the centre using the usual 'GET' method, so my pages look like: "index.php?page=about" In my jQuery code I want to have a declaration where if I click the navigation, the content scrolls up, then once the relevant PHP file has loaded, have the content scroll back down and show the new page content (whilst also of navigated to the new page in the address bar, so if the user clicks the back button in their browser, they return to the previous page). I know how to code the scrolling bits, it's just literally the ajax loading includes / page navigation parts I'm struggling to work out :\ Any help would be MUCH appreciated!!! Thanks in advance. • Why is there no music streaming API service?

  Apple has decided to kill lala.com. I loved that site. Now, everyone has to go back to paying $0.89+ for songs from Amazon, iTunes, etc. Lame. Rhapsody would be great, except there are no clients for Mac or Linux. They do have a web interface, buy it is nothing compared to lala's web 2.0y interface. What I just don't understand is, why is there no music API streaming service out there? Basically, developers could hook the service into any desktop or web app, and then users of the app could pay $x a month (like with Rhapsody) and play any amount of music, so long as their subscription is active. Why not? Lala streamed music to web browsers, so surely it could be as secure as lala is (was), preventing music theft.

  I've been programming in Asp.Net MVC for quite some time now and to expand a little bit beyond the .Net world I've recently began learning Python and Django. I am enjoying Django but one thing I am missing from Asp.Net MVC is the automatic routing from my urls to my controller actions. In Asp.Net MVC I can build much of my application using this single default route: routes.MapRoute( "Default", // Route name "{controller}/{action}/{id}", // URL with parameters new { controller = "Home", action = "Index", id = "" } // Parameter defaults ); In Django I've found myself adding an entry to urls.py for each view that I want to expose which leads to a lot more url patterns than I've become used to in Asp.Net MVC. Is there a way to create a single url pattern in Django that will handle "[Application]/view/[params]" in a way similar to Asp.Net MVC? Perhaps at the main web site level?

  I am using impersonation is used to access file on UNC share as below. var ctx = ((WindowsIdentity)HttpContext.Current.User.Identity).Impersonate(); string level = WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent().ImpersonationLevel); On two Windows 2003 servers using IIS6, I am getting different impersonation levels: Delegation on one server and Impersonation on the other server. This causes issues where I am unable to access the UNC share on the server with 'Impersonation' level. What could be causing this difference? I searched through machine.config and IIS settings for the app pool, site and virtual directories - but aren't able to find the cause of this problem.

  I'm using jQuery in my site and I would like to trigger certain actions when a certain div is made visible. Is it possible to attach some sort of "isvisible" event handler to arbitrary divs and have certain code run when they the div is made visible? I would like something like the following pseudocode: $(function() { $('#contentDiv').isvisible(function() { alert("do something"); }); }); The alert("do something") code should not fire until the contentDiv is actually made visible. • How to set up 3rd party developer portal

  I am developing a web service and depend on 3rd party developers to write client applications for it. I need to set a developer portal, a web site where existing and potential developers would find documentation html pages doc files for download libraries downloads wiki forums support ticketing system. There should be a public part and a part protected by login. I want only logged in users to submit tickets, for example. I don't want to host it. I would prefer a generic design based on a sensible template, where I can add minimal customization, such as logo. I don't want to add code to get any of the above functionality. I will do all that if necessary, but I'd hope there would be an online service to do thing like that. What services would you guys recommend?
