  • How to balance load in a Apache + Mongrel application

Two questions: Does it even help having separate rails applications reading from the same database in the same dedicated server? I understand Apache can balance load installing some extra modules? am i right? how can we accomplish this? (please provide explanation for dummies)

  • IE dynamic image caching issue?

    I have an html page that is loading multiple iframes into which are embedded dynamic images created from a Tomcat server page (.jsp). This works as expected from Chrome and Firefox, but for some reason IE displays all of the images the same (as the first image). I've created an example: http://coupondiscounts.com/dev/jsImageTest.html jsImageTest.html -- This page simply loads 6 instances of the testImageFrame.html page in separate iframes one-at-a-time, using Javascript. testImageFrame.html -- This is the page loaded in all the iframes. It contains only a JavaScript block that writes out the current time and an img tag. The img is dynamically generated by a .jsp page on a different server. It should be a white box on a black background. In the box are the current time (from the Tomcat server using Java) and a randomly created double between 0 & 1. What happens (in IE): The page almost instantly loads four identical iframes. Depending on the speed of your machine, the JavaScript times may vary by a second or two. The images' times will all be the same as will be the random number. This holds true even for the last two iframes which are loaded 5 and 10 seconds after the others (using JavaScript setTimeout()). What should happen (as it does in Chrome and FF): The page loads the same 4 iframes, but the random numbers in the images will be different. The times in the images occasionally span a second as well. Anyone have a clue as to what's going on here? Is IE doing some strange caching? The image header has "no-cache," "no-store" and all that. I've tried it on IE6 and 7. You can use the "Next" button to create another iframe. In IE, the images are always the same. Notes: I don't really need iframes, just the images, but if I only use img tags, the problem appears in Chrome and FF as well. I also don't really need to load these iframes dynamically, I was just trying to abstract the issue further and allow a delayed load for the latter 2 images.

    I'd like to ensure that when I'm persisting any data to the database, using (Fluent)NHibernate, that the operations are executed inside a transaction. Is there anyway of checking that a transaction is active via an interceptor? Or any other eventing mechanism? More specifically, I'm using the System.Transaction.TransactionScope for transaction management, and just want to stop myself from not using it.

    In a SQL Server 2008 R2 database, given this schema: AgentsAccounts _______________ AgentID int UNIQUE AccountID FinalAgents ___________ AgentID I need to create a query that does this: For each AgentID 'final' in FinalAgents remove all of the OTHER AgentID's from AgentsAccounts that have the same AccountID as 'final'. So if the tables have these rows before the query: AgentsAccounts AgentID AccountID 1 A 2 A 3 B 4 B FinalAgents 1 3 then after the query the AgentsAccounts table will look like this: AgentsAccounts AgentID AccountID 1 A 3 B What T-SQL query will delete the correct rows without using a curosr?

  • mysql_connect VS mysql_pconnect

    I have this doubt, I've searched the web and the answers seem to be diversified. Is it better to use mysql_pconnect over mysql_connect when connecting to a database via PHP? I read that pconnect scales much better, but on the other hand, being a persistent connection... having 10 000 connections at the same time, all persistent, doesn't seem scalable to me.   • Create unique links for indvidual elements of a PHP generated table

    I have a table generated from some PHP code that lists a SMALL amount of important information for employees. I want to make it so each row, or at least one element in each row can be clicked on so the user will be redirected to ALL of the information (pulled from MySQL database) related to the employee who was clicked on. I am not sure how would be the best way to go about this, but I am open to suggestions. I would like to stick to PHP and/or JavaScript.   • Would Python make a good substitute for the Windows command-line/batch scripts?

    I've got some experience with Bash, which I don't mind, but now that I'm doing a lot of Windows development I'm needing to do basic stuff/write basic scripts using the Windows command-line language. For some reason said language really irritates me, so I was considering learning Python and using that instead. Is Python suitable for such things? Moving files around, creating scripts to do things like unzipping a backup and restoring a SQL database, etc.

    I have a javascript variable that basically looks like this: my_svg_image = '<circle cx="227.58331298828125" cy="102" r="3" style="fill:black;stroke-width:0" />'; It was loaded from my database. Is there a way I can parse that string and add it to the DOM with Javascript? I have svgweb set up, but don't see how I can get it to parse this string. Are there other libraries that might help?

    Does Doctrine 1.2 support importing indexes with Doctrine_Core::generateModelsFromDb() function? I need to make a migration between 2 database connections, one of them having unique index on 2 fields and one doesn't. And my migration is empty. It looks like Doctrine doesn't support indexes when importing from databae, other than those tied to relationship foreign keys. $changes = Doctrine_Core::generateMigrationsFromDiff($migrationsPath, array('doctrineOld'), array('doctrine'));

    Okay I use this script here to make a backup of my database: mysqldump -u root -h localhost -pPASSWORD forums | gzip -9 > backup-$(date +%Y-%m-%d).sql.gz This is used in a cron daily. But I need to download this remotely or through a ftp program every day as well so I have a physical copy of it on my home hard drive, is this possible? I know it is, can anyone tell me a quick way to do it?
