  • What does :this means in Ruby on Rails?

    - by Marco
Hi, I'm new to the Ruby and Ruby on Rails world. I've read some guides, but i've some trouble with the following syntax. I think that the usage of :condition syntax is used in Ruby to define a class attribute with some kind of accessor, like: class Sample attr_accessor :condition end that implicitly declares the getter and setter for the "condition" property. While i was looking at some Rails sample code, i found the following examples that i don't fully understand. For example: @post = Post.find(params[:id]) Why it's accessing the id attribute with this syntax, instead of: @post = Post.find(params[id]) Or, for example: @posts = Post.find(:all) Is :all a constant here? If not, what does this code really means? If yes, why the following is not used: @posts = Post.find(ALL) Thanks

  • Why did the C# designers attach three different meanings to the 'using' keyword?

    - by gWiz
The using keyword has three disparate meanings: type/namespace aliasing namespace import syntactic sugar for ensuring Dispose is called The documentation calls the first two definitions directives (which I'm guessing means they are preprocessing in nature), while the last is a statement. Regardless of the fact that they are distinguished by their syntaxes, why would the language developers complicate the semantics of the keyword by attaching three different meanings to it? For example, (disclaimer: off the top of my head, there may certainly be better examples) why not add keywords like alias and import? Technical, theoretical, or historical reasons? Keyword quota? ;-) Contrived sample: import System.Timers; alias LiteTimer=System.Threading.Timer; alias WinForms=System.Windows.Forms; public class Sample { public void Action { var elapsed = false; using(var t = new LiteTimer.Timer(_ => elapsed = true) { while (!elapsed) CallSomeFinickyApi(); } } } "Using" is such a vague word.

  • What do I need to change to get this 'acts_as_rateable' Rails plugin working with this code from the

    - by tepidsam
Hello! I'm working my way through the 'Foundation Rails 2' book. In Chapter 9, we are building a little "plugins" app. In the book, he installs the acts_as_rateable plugin found at http://juixe.com/svn/acts_as_rateable. This plugin doesn't appear to exist in 2010 (the page for this "old" plugin seems to be working again...it was down when I tried it earlier), so I found another acts_as_rateable plugin at http://github.com/azabaj/acts_as_rateable. These plugins are different and I'm trying to get the "new" plugin working with the code/project/app from the Foudations 2 book. I was able to use the migration generator included with the "new" plugin and it worked. Now,though, I'm a bit confused. In the book, he has us create a new controller to work with the plugin (the old plugin). Here's the code for that: class RatingsController < ApplicationController def create @plugin = Plugin.find(params[:plugin_id]) rating = Rating.new(:rating => params[:rating]) @plugin.ratings << average_rating redirect_to @plugin end end Then he had us change the routing: map.resources :plugins, :has_many => :ratings map.resources :categories map.root :controller => 'plugins' Next, we modified the following to the 'show' template so that it looks like this: <div id="rate_plugin"> <h2>Rate this plugin</h2> <ul class="star-rating"> <li> <%= link_to "1", @plugin.rate_it(1), :method => :post, :title => "1 star out of 5", :class => "one-star" %> </li> <li> <%= link_to "2", plugin_ratings_path(@plugin, :rating => 2), :method => :post, :title => "2 stars out of 5", :class => "two-stars" %> </li> <li> <%= link_to "3", plugin_ratings_path(@plugin, :rating => 3), :method => :post, :title => "3 stars out of 5", :class => "three-stars" %> </li> <li> <%= link_to "4", plugin_ratings_path(@plugin, :rating => 4), :method => :post, :title => "4 stars out of 5", :class => "four-stars" %> </li> <li> <%= link_to "5", plugin_ratings_path(@plugin, :rating => 5), :method => :post, :title => "5 stars out of 5", :class => "five-stars" %> </li> </ul> </div> The problem is that we're using code for a different plugin. When I try to actually "rate" one of the plugins, I get an "unknown attribute" error. That makes sense. I'm using attribute names for the "old" plugin, but I should be using attributes names for the "new" plugin. The problem is...I've tried using a variety of different attribute names and I keep getting the same error. From the README for the "new" plugin, I think I should be using some of these but I haven't been able to get them working: Install the plugin into your vendor/plugins directory, insert 'acts_as_rateable' into your model, then restart your application. class Post < ActiveRecord::Base acts_as_rateable end Now your model is extended by the plugin, you can rate it ( 1-# )or calculate the average rating. @plugin.rate_it( 4, current_user.id ) @plugin.average_rating #=> 4.0 @plugin.average_rating_round #=> 4 @plugin.average_rating_percent #=> 80 @plugin.rated_by?( current_user ) #=> rating || false Plugin.find_average_of( 4 ) #=> array of posts See acts_as_rateable.rb for further details! I'm guessing that I might have to make some "bigger" changes to get this plugin working. I'm asking this question to learn and only learn. The book gives code to get things working with the old plugin, but if one were actually building this app today it would be necessary to use this "new" plugin, so I would like to see how it could be used. Cheers! Any ideas on what I could change to get the "new" plugin working?

  • Video Player/Library for Ubuntu with ratings and thumbs

    - by greggannicott
Hi. I've just made the switch to Ubuntu on my main PC and I've been looking for a media player that can: Play all the usual video formats Rate (and ideally, tag) each file Display thumbnails for each file Other than that there isn't much I'm after. Banshee comes close, but doesn't display thumbnails. I've Google'd lots but I'm running out of search terms to try. Does anyone have any suggestions? Cheers!

  • Streaming from a second computer

    - by techgod52
I play games on my laptop, and they run at about 30-45 fps, which is bearable for me. But when I try to stream, the frame rate drops to 20 or lower, which is unplayable for me. I have a second computer though (a Mac, the laptop is Win7), and I'm wondering if there is anyway to stream the game content (onto Twitch.tv) from my laptop using my Mac. Is this possible, and how would I go about doing it?

  • subviews show confused rotated state after a modal dialog is displayed

    - by deafgreatdane
I've created a custom UIViewController that mimics the UISplitViewController. It manages two child view controllers that get displayed in the left & right body area while in landscape and hides the left to show in a popover when in portrait. It works fine, using the didRotateFromInterfaceOrientation: and willRotateToInterfaceOrientation: messages to reset the location and sizing of the child views. All the views and child controllers are loaded from a nib. This custom view controller is shown inside a UINavigationController. The trouble arises after one of the child view controllers uses presentModalViewController. If the device was rotated after the views were initialized (but before the modal controller is shown), after the modal dialog is dismissed, the left and/or body views will be re-rendered in a different rotation than they were before the modal dialog was changed. I'm wondering if folks have had a similar problem, and what the solution is. I'm sure sample code would be helpful, but it'll take a bunch of work to distill it into a runnable sample.

  • Getting caught in loops - R

    - by user334898
    I am looking at whether or not certain 'systems' for betting really do work as claimed, namely, that they have a positive expectation. One such system is based on the rebate on loss. You basically have a large master pot, say $1 million. Your bankroll for each game is $50k. The way it works, is as follows: 1) Start with $50k, always bet on banker 2) If you win, add the money to the master pot. Then play again with $50k. 3) If you lose(now you're at $30k) play till you either: (a) hit 0, you get a rebate of 10%. Begin playing again with $50k+5k=$55k. (b) If you win more than the initial bankroll, add the money to the master pot. Then play again with $50k. 4) Continue until you double the master pot. I just cant find an easy way of programming out the possible cases in R, since you can eventually go down an improbable path. For example, you start at 50k, lose 20, win 19, now you're at 49, now you lose 20, lose 20, now youre at 9, you either lose 9 and get back 5k or you win and this cycle continues until you either end up with more than 50k or hit 0 and get the rebate on the 50k and start again with $50k +5k. Here's some code i started, but i havent figured out a good way of handling the cases where you get stuck and keeping track of the number of games played. Thanks again for your help. Obviously, I understand you may be busy and not have time. p.loss <- .4462466 p.win <- .4585974 p.tie <- 1 - (p.win+p.loss) prob <- c(p.win,p.tie,p.loss) bet<-20 x <- c(19,0,-20) r <- 10 # rebate = 20% br.i <- 50 br<-200 #for(i in 1:100){ # cbr.i<-0 y <- sample(x,1,replace=T,prob) cbr.i<-y+br.i if(cbr.i > br.i){ br<-br+(cbr.i-br.i); cbr.i<-br.i; }else{ y <- sample(x,2,replace=T,prob); if( sum(y)< cbr.i ){ cbr.i<-br.i+(1/r)*br.i; br<-br-br.i} cbr.i<-y+ }else{ cbr.i<- sum(y) + cbr.i; }if(cbr.i <= bet){ y <- sample(x,1,replace=T,prob) if(abs(y)>cbr.i){ cbr.i<-br.i+(1/r)*br.i } }

  • WP7 - attempt to select and use application static resource in codebehind not working (no resources found).

    - by pearcewg
With Windows Phone 7, I'm attempting to dynamically add controls to and object in codebehind, and apply a StaticResource to the new control. Xaml file sample: <phone:PhoneApplicationPage.Resources> <ControlTemplate x:Key="PushpinControlTemplateBlue" TargetType="my2:Pushpin"> ... </ControlTemplate> </phone:PhoneApplicationPage.Resources> Codebehind sample: >Pushpin myPush = new Pushpin(); >myPush.Location = new GeoCoordinate(52.569593, -0.9261151403188705); >myPush.Content = ""; >myPush.Template = (ControlTemplate)Application.Current.Resources["PushpinControlTemplateBlue"]; >mapMain.Children.Add(myPush); When I debug, and look at "Application.Current.Resources", there are no items in the collection, so the item is added to the controls list, but doesn't show up because it has no content. Is there something simple I'm doing wrong? How do I correctly access the resource?

  • Caveates on the html options of <pre> <code> [on hold]

    - by user2935199
Over at html syntax to display literal string i asked about displaying a literal. When i tried : http://sdrv.ms/1bEsPWz (as the posted sample will not display, i need to show a picture, as i don't have 10 xxx, i can't insert a picture, I am only left with a skydrive reference) In english, the and syntax was tried but it failed to show all content inside the block. It only showed the "is equal to - pre sample " part. I thought - did not care what was inside ? Can some explain how to make a truely literal block display ? I have my reasons why i don't want to have the " syntax in the html. Thanks

Please see the details below: Create table TableA ( ProjectID INT NOT NULL, ControlID INT NOT NULL, ControlCode Varchar(2) NOT NULL, ControlPoint Decimal NULL, ControlScore Decimal NULL, ControlValue Varchar(50) ) Sample Data ------------- ProjectID | ControlID | ControlCode | ControlPoint | ControlScore | ControlValue P001 1 A 30.44 65 Invalid P001 2 C 45.30 85 Valid Create table TableB ( ControlID INT NOT NULL, ControlChildID INT NOT NULL, ControlChildValue Varchar(200) NULL ) Sample Data ------------ ControlID | ControlChildID | ControlChildValue 1 100 Yes 1 101 No 1 102 NA 1 103 Others 2 104 Yes 2 105 SomeValue Output should be in a single row for a given ProjectID with all its Control values first & followed by child control values (based on the ControlCode (i.e.) ControlCode_Child (1, 2, 3...) and it should look like this

  • Limiting network throughput of an already launched process ? (Linux/FreeBSD)

    - by jbdenis
Hello everybody, is there any utility to limit the network throughput of a process after it has been launched ? Simple example: you note that a user takes all your upload bandwidth using scp and you'd like to limit the rate or decrease the priority of the transfer. I guess i could use a combination of iptables/tc or pf to achieve that, but i was wondering if there is a "one-shot" tool available (like tickle with a --pid option ^^) ? Regards, Jean-Baptiste
