  • Extending abstract classes in c#

    - by ng
    I am a Java developer and I have noticed some differences in extending abstract classes in c# as opposed to Java. I was wondering how a c# developer would achived the following. 1) Covarience public abstract class A { public abstract List<B> List(); } public class BList : List<T> where T : B { } public abstract class C : A { public abstract BList List(); } So in the above hierarchy, there is covarience in C where it returns a type compatible with what A returns. However this gives me an error in Visual Studio. Is there a way to specify a covarient return type in c#? 2) Adding a setter to a property public abstract class A { public abstract String Name { get; } } public abstract class B : A { public abstract String Name { get; set } } Here the compiler complains of hiding. Any suggestions? Please do not suggest using interfaces unless that is the ONLY way to do this.

  • Is there such a thing as a MemberExpression that handles a many-to-many relationship?

    - by Jaxidian
    We're trying to make it easy to write strongly-typed code in all areas of our system, so rather than setting var sortColumn = "FirstName" we'd like to say sortOption = (p => p.FirstName). This works great if the sortOption is of type Expression<Func<Person, object>> (we actually use generics in our code but that doesn't matter). However, we run into problems for many-to-many relationships because this notation breaks down. Consider this simple code: internal class Business { public IQueryable<Address> Addresses { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } } internal class Address { public State MyState { get; set; } } internal class State { public string Abbreviation { get; set; } public int StateID { get; set; } } Is it possible to have this sort of MemberExpression to identify the StateID column off of a business? Again, the purpose of using this is not to return a StateID object, it's to just identify that property off of that entity (for sorting, filtering, and other purposes). It SEEMS to me that there should be some way to do this, even if it's not quite as pretty as foo = business.Addresses.SomeExtension(a => a.State.StateID);. Is this really possible? If more background is needed, take a look at this old question of mine. We've since updated the code significantly, but this should give you the general detailed idea of the context behind this question.

  • Cannot understand the behaviour of C# compiler while instantiating a class thru interface

    - by Newbie
    I have a class that implements an interface. The interface is public interface IRiskFactory { void StartService(); void StopService(); } The class that implements the interface is public class RiskFactoryService : IRiskFactory { } Now I have a console application and one window service. From the console application if I write the following code static void Main(string[] args) { IRiskFactory objIRiskFactory = new RiskFactoryService(); objIRiskFactory.StartService(); Console.ReadLine(); objIRiskFactory.StopService(); } It is working fine. However, when I mwrite the same piece of code in Window service public partial class RiskFactoryService : ServiceBase { IRiskFactory objIRiskFactory = null; public RiskFactoryService() { InitializeComponent(); objIRiskFactory = new RiskFactoryService(); <- ERROR } /// <summary> /// Starts the service /// </summary> /// <param name="args"></param> protected override void OnStart(string[] args) { objIRiskFactory.StartService(); } /// <summary> /// Stops the service /// </summary> protected override void OnStop() { objIRiskFactory.StopService(); } } It throws error: Cannot implicitly convert type 'RiskFactoryService' to 'IRiskFactory'. An explicit conversion exists (are you missing a cast?) When I type cast to the interface type, it started working objIRiskFactory = (IRiskFactory)new RiskFactoryService(); My question is why so?

  • NSPredicate (Core Data fetch) to filter on an attribute value being present in a supplied set (list)

    - by starbaseweb
    I'm trying to create a fetch predicate that is the analog to the SQL "IN" statement, and the syntax to do so with NSPredicate escapes me. Here's what I have so far (the relevant excerpt from my fetching routine): NSFetchRequest *request = [[[NSFetchRequest alloc] init] autorelease]; NSEntityDescription *entity = [NSEntityDescription entityForName: @"BodyPartCategory" inManagedObjectContext:_context]; [request setEntity:entity]; NSPredicate *predicate = [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"(name IN %@)", [RPBodyPartCategory defaultBodyPartCategoryNames]]; [request setPredicate:predicate]; The entity "BodyPartCategory" has a string attribute "name". I have a list of names (just NSString objects) in an NSArray as returned by: [RPBodyPartCategory defaultBodyPartCategoryNames] So let's say that array has string such as {@"Liver", @"Kidney", @"Thyroid"} ... etc. I want to fetch all 'BodyPartCategory' instances whose name attribute matches one of the strings in the set provided (technically NSArray but I can make it an NSSet). In SQL, this would be something like: SELECT * FROM BodyPartCategories WHERE name IN ('Liver', 'Kidney', 'Thyroid') I've gone through various portions of the Predicate Programming Guide, but I don't see this simple use case covered. Pointers/help much appreciated!

  • Is there any alternative way of writing this switch statement(C#3.0)

    - by Newbie
    Can it be done in a better way public static EnumFactorType GetFactorEnum(string str) { Standardization e = new Standardization(); switch (str.ToLower()) { case "beta": e.FactorType = EnumFactorType.BETA; break; case "bkp": e.FactorType = EnumFactorType.BOOK_TO_PRICE; break; case "yld": e.FactorType = EnumFactorType.DIVIDEND_YIELD; break; case "growth": e.FactorType = EnumFactorType.GROWTH; break; case "mean": e.FactorType = EnumFactorType.MARKET_CAP; break; case "momentum": e.FactorType = EnumFactorType.MOMENTUM; break; case "size": e.FactorType = EnumFactorType.SIZE; break; case "stat_fact1": e.FactorType = EnumFactorType.STAT_FACT_1; break; case "stat_fact2": e.FactorType = EnumFactorType.STAT_FACT_2; break; case "value": e.FactorType = EnumFactorType.VALUE; break; } return e.FactorType; } If I create a Static class(say Constatant) and declare variable like public static string BETA= "beta"; and then if I try to put that in the Case expression like Case Constants.BETA : e.FactorType = EnumFactorType.BETA; break; then the compiler will report error.(quite expected) So is there any other way?(I canot change the switch statement) Using C#3.0 Thanks

  • C# how to get trailing spaces from the end of a varchar(513) field while exporting SQL table to a fl

    - by svon
    How do I get empty spaces from the end of a varchar(513) field while exporting data from SQL table to a flat file. I have a console application. Here is what I am using to export a SQL table having only one column of varchar(513) to a flat file. But I need to get all the 513 characters including spaces at the end. How do I change this code to incorporate that. Thanks { var destination = args[0]; var command = string.Format("Select * from {0}", Validator.Check(args[1])); var connectionstring = string.Format("Data Source={0}; Initial Catalog=dbname;Integrated Security=SSPI;", args[2]); var helper = new SqlHelper(command, CommandType.Text, connectionstring); using (StreamWriter writer = new StreamWriter(destination)) using (IDataReader reader = helper.ExecuteReader()) { while (reader.Read()) { Object[] values = new Object[reader.FieldCount]; int fieldCount = reader.GetValues(values); for (int i = 0; i < fieldCount; i++) writer.Write(values[i]); writer.WriteLine(); } writer.Close(); }

  • PrgressDialog when load a WebView crash issue

    - by AndreaF
    I have an Activity with a WeView that load an url, and I want to display a little waiting dialog during the load of the site, so I have tried this: private ProgressDialog dialog = new ProgressDialog(MyNameActivity.this); @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); StrictMode.ThreadPolicy policy = new StrictMode.ThreadPolicy.Builder() .permitAll().build(); StrictMode.setThreadPolicy(policy); setContentView(R.layout.web_view_activity); WebView wv; wv = (WebView) findViewById(R.id.areaWebSolver); wv.setWebViewClient(new WebViewClient() { @Override public boolean shouldOverrideUrlLoading(WebView view, String url) { view.loadUrl(url); return true; } @Override public void onPageFinished(WebView view, String url) { if (dialog.isShowing()) { dialog.dismiss(); } } }); dialog.setMessage("Loading..Please wait."); dialog.setCanceledOnTouchOutside(false); dialog.show(); wv.loadUrl(url); WebSettings webSettings = wv.getSettings(); webSettings.setJavaScriptEnabled(true); } Unfortunately doesn't works and the app crashes with a source not found... If I try to remove the Progress dialog code the activity works. What's wrong? How could I fix this?

  • Calculations coming out to 0.0?

    - by Nick Gibson
    A simple percentage calculation. It wont return a value except 0.0 and I think once or twice it returned 100.0%. Other than that it won't do a thing. I have tried playing with the code in several different ways and it just wont work. for (int loop = 1; loop < loopCount; loop++) { aa = r.nextInt(10+1); abc = (int) aa; String[] userAnswer = new String[x]; int totalQues = (correctAnswer + wrongAnswer), actualQues = (totalQues - 1); if(abc < x) { userAnswer[abc] = JOptionPane.showInputDialog(null,"Question "+quesNum+"\n\n"+questions[abc]+"\n\nA: "+a[abc]+"\nB: "+b[abc]+"\nC: "+c[abc]+"\nD: "+d[abc]+"\nCorrect Answers: "+correctAnswer+"\nWrong Answers: "+wrongAnswer+"\nTotal Questions: "+totalQues); if(userAnswer[abc].equals(answers[abc])) { correctAnswer++; } else { wrongAnswer++; }//else if(actualQues == x); { score = (correctAnswer / actualQues) * 100; JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null,"The test is finished."); JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null,"You scored "+score+"%"); }//if }//if }//for

  • Is there a way to sync (two way) tables betwen a mysql server and a local MS Access?

    - by Kailen
    Help me figure out a solution to a (not so unique) problem. My research group has gps devices attached to migratory animals. Every once in a while, a research tech will be within range of an animal and will get the chance to download all the logged points. Each individual spits out a single dbf and new locations are just appended to the end (so the file is just cumulative). These data need to be shared among a research group. Everyone else (besides me) wants to use access, so they can make small edits and prefer that interface. They do not like using MySQL. The solution I came up with is: a) The person who downloads the file goes to a web page, enters animal ID into a form, chooses .dbf file and uploads to a mysql database on the server (I still have to write php code to read the dbf and write sql insert statements from it). b) Everyone syncs from their local access database to the server. (This is natively possible from access but very clunky). Is there a tool (preferably open source), that can compare a access table to mysql table and sync the two (both ways)? Alternatively, does anyone have a more elegant solution? The ultimate goal is to allow everyone to have access to the most current data on their computers using their preferred database app.

  • txt file read/overwrite/append. Is this feasible? (Visual C#)

    - by Arcadian
    Hi, I'm writing a program for some data entry I have to periodically do. I have begun testing a few things that the program will have to do but i'm not sure about this part. What i need this part to do is: read a .txt file of data take the first 12 characters from each line take the first 12 characters from each line of the data that has been entered in a multi-line text box compare the two lists line by line if one of the 12 character blocks from the multi-line text box match one of the blocks in the .txt file then overwrite that entire line (only 17 characters in total) if one of the 12 character blocks from the multi-line text box DO NOT match any of the blocks in the.txt file then append that entire line to the file thats all it has to do. i'll do an example: TXT FILE: G01:78:08:32 JG05 G08:80:93:10 JG02 G28:58:29:28 JG04 MULTI-LINE TEXT BOX: G01:78:08:32 JG06 G28:58:29:28 JG03 G32:10:18:14 JG01 G32:18:50:78 JG07 RESULTING TXT FILE: G01:78:08:32 JG06 G08:80:93:10 JG02 G28:58:29:28 JG03 G32:10:18:14 JG01 G32:18:50:78 JG07 as you can see lines 1 and 3 were overwriten, line 2 was left alone as it did not match any blocks in the text box, lines 4 and 5 were appended to the file. thats all i want it to do. How do i go about this? Thanks in advance

  • C# Possible to have a generic return type?

    - by JL
    Here is a typical function that returns either true/false; private static bool hasValue() { return true; } Now on an error, I would like to return my own custom error object with definition: public class Failure { public string failureDateTime { get; set; } public string failureReason { get; set; } } I would have expected to be able to throw this custom object for example... private static bool hasValue() { throw new Failure(); } This is not possible, and I don't want to derive Failure from System.IO.Exception because of the inability to serialize an exception in C#. What is the best practice / or ideal solution to this problem. Should I just work with private static object? Or is there a cleaner way to return a custom object or bypass the typical return type on an error (not using System.IO.Exception)? Not entirely wild about object either, because then I need to cast the result and validate it by more boolean logic.

  • Is this the best way to grab common elements from a Hash of arrays?

    - by Hulihan Applications
    I'm trying to get a common element from a group of arrays in Ruby. Normally, you can use the & operator to compare two arrays, which returns elements that are present or common in both arrays. This is all good, except when you're trying to get common elements from more than two arrays. However, I want to get common elements from an unknown, dynamic number of arrays, which are stored in a hash. I had to resort to using the eval() method in ruby, which executes a string as actual code. Here's the function I wrote: def get_common_elements_for_hash_of_arrays(hash) # get an array of common elements contained in a hash of arrays, for every array in the hash. # ["1","2","3"] & ["2","4","5"] & ["2","5","6"] # => ["2"] # eval("[\"1\",\"2\",\"3\"] & [\"2\",\"4\",\"5\"] & [\"2\",\"5\",\"6\"]") # => ["2"] eval_string_array = Array.new # an array to store strings of Arrays, ie: "[\"2\",\"5\",\"6\"]", which we will join with & to get all common elements hash.each do |key, array| eval_string_array << array.inspect end eval_string = eval_string_array.join(" & ") # create eval string delimited with a & so we can get common values return eval(eval_string) end example_hash = {:item_0 => ["1","2","3"], :item_1 => ["2","4","5"], :item_2 => ["2","5","6"] } puts get_common_elements_for_hash_of_arrays(example_hash) # => 2 This works and is great, but I'm wondering...eval, really? Is this the best way to do it? Are there even any other ways to accomplish this(besides a recursive function, of course). If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears. Otherwise, Feel free to use this code if you need to grab a common item or element from a group or hash of arrays, this code can also easily be adapted to search an array of arrays.

  • Make var_dump look pretty

    - by tPlummer
    I have a simple $_GET[] query var set for showing testing data when pulling down queries from the DB. <?php if($_GET['test']): ?> <div id="test" style="padding: 24px; background: #fff; text-align: center;"> <table> <tr style="font-weight: bold;"><td>MLS</td></tr> <tr><td><?php echo KEY; ?></td></tr> <tr style="font-weight: bold;"><td>QUERY</td></tr> <tr><td><?php echo $data_q; ?></td></tr> <tr style="font-weight: bold;"><td>DATA</td></tr> <tr><td><?php var_dump($data); ?></td></tr> </table> </div> <?php endif; ?> When I do var_dump, as expected it's this big array string that is all smushed together. Is there a way to add in line breaks at least for this or display the var_dump in a way that's more readable? I'm open to jQuery suggestions on manipulating the string after it's posted.

  • Succinct LINQ to XML Query

    - by Kent Boogaart
    Assuming you have the following XML: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <content> <info> <media> <image> <info> <imageType>product</imageType> </info> <imagedata fileref="http://www.example.com/image1.jpg" /> </image> <image> <info> <imageType>manufacturer</imageType> </info> <imagedata fileref="http://www.example.com/image2.jpg" /> </image> </media> </info> </content> Using LINQ to XML, what is the most succinct, robust way to obtain a System.Uri for an image of a given type? At the moment I have this: private static Uri GetImageUri(XElement xml, string imageType) { return (from imageTypeElement in xml.Descendants("imageType") where imageTypeElement.Value == imageType && imageTypeElement.Parent != null && imageTypeElement.Parent.Parent != null from imageDataElement in imageTypeElement.Parent.Parent.Descendants("imagedata") let fileRefAttribute = imageDataElement.Attribute("fileref") where fileRefAttribute != null && !string.IsNullOrEmpty(fileRefAttribute.Value) select new Uri(fileRefAttribute.Value)).FirstOrDefault(); } This works, but feels way too complicated. Especially when you consider the XPath equivalent. Can anyone point out a better way?

  • Another C++ question, delete not working?

    - by kyeana
    New to c++, and am having a problem with delete and destructor (I am sure i am making a stupid mistake here, but haven't been able to figure it out as of yet). When i step through into the destructor, and attepmt to call delete on a pointer, the message shows up "Cannot access memory at address some address." The relevant code is: /* * Removes the front item of the linked list and returns the value stored * in that node. * * TODO - Throws an exception if the list is empty */ std::string LinkedList::RemoveFront() { LinkedListNode *n = pHead->GetNext(); // the node we are removing std::string rtnData = n->GetData(); // the data to return // un-hook the node from the linked list pHead->SetNext(n->GetNext()); n->GetNext()->SetPrev(pHead); // delete the node delete n; n=0; size--; return rtnData; } and /* * Destructor for a linked node. * * Deletes all the dynamically allocated memory, and sets those pointers to 0. */ LinkedListNode::~LinkedListNode() { delete pNext; // This is where the error pops up delete pPrev; pNext=0; pPrev=0; }

  • Java variables across methods

    I'm making a basic text editor, and I have 2 methods the first one is triggered when a user click 'Open' and it prompts the user to pick a file and it opens the file fine. I just want to access the same file path which is in a variable in the method that is triggered when the user clicks save. My methods are public, Iv'e tried accessing it through a class, still no. Please help! Code: public void open(){ try{ //Open file JFileChooser fc = new JFileChooser(); fc.showOpenDialog(null); File file = fc.getSelectedFile(); String haha = file.getPath(); BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new FileReader(file.getPath())); String line; while((line = br.readLine()) != null){ text.append(line + "\n"); } } catch (FileNotFoundException e){ e.printStackTrace(); }catch (IOException e){ } } public void save(){ try { BufferedWriter bw = new BufferedWriter(new FileWriter(file.filePath)); bw.write(text.getText()); bw.close(); } catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } }

  • [c++/STL] Selective iterator

    - by rubenvb
    FYI: no boost, yes it has this, I want to reinvent the wheel ;) Is there some form of a selective iterator (possible) in C++? What I want is to seperate strings like this: some:word{or other to a form like this: some : word { or other I can do that with two loops and find_first_of(":") and ("{") but this seems (very) inefficient to me. I thought that maybe there would be a way to create/define/write an iterator that would iterate over all these values with for_each. I fear this will have me writing a full-fledged custom way-too-complex iterator class for a std::string. So I thought maybe this would do: std::vector<size_t> list; size_t index = mystring.find(":"); while( index != std::string::npos ) { list.push_back(index); index = mystring.find(":", list.back()); } std::for_each(list.begin(), list.end(), addSpaces(mystring)); This looks messy to me, and I'm quite sure a more elegant way of doing this exists. But I can't think of it. Anyone have a bright idea? Thanks PS: I did not test the code posted, just a quick write-up of what I would try

  • Basic Ajax Cache Issue

    - by michaelespinosa
    I have a single page that I need to on occasion asynchronously check the server to see if the status of the page is current (basically, Live or Offline). You will see I have a function with a var live that is set when the page initially loads. I then do an ajax request to the server to retrieve whether the status of live is true or false. I compare the initial live variable with the newly returned data json object. If they're the same I do nothing, but if there different I apply some css classes. I recursively run it with setTimeout (Is there a better way to recursively do this?). My Problem: data.live doesn't change from it's initial time it runs even when it has changed in the db. I know my mysql is working because it returs the right value on the initial load. It seems like a caching issue. Any help is greatly appreciated. function checkLive() { var live = <?=$result["live"]?>; $.ajax({ type: 'get', url: '/live/live.php', dataType: 'json', success: function(data) { console.log('checking for updates... current:' + data.live); if (data.live == live) { return; } else { var elems = $('div.player_meta, object, h3.offline_message'); if (data.live == '1') { elems.removeClass('offline').addClass('live'); } else { elems.addClass('live').addClass('offline'); } } } }); setTimeout(function() { checkLive() } ,15000); } checkLive();

  • Putting cursor into dynamically added input fields with jQuery

    - by Sandoichi
    I wrote a script that allows users to click onto a table cell and edit the value with jQuery. Basically, when they click the cell, the HTML in the cell gets replaced with an input box and any text that was previously in the cell gets added to the input. My issue is that whenever they click on the cell, the input doesn't get focused and they have to click a second time to put the cursor in. I have tried a bunch of selectors with .focus() to try and put the cursor in but I'm not having any luck. Here is the function that gets called when the user clicks on a cell: function edit_cell() { if($(this).hasClass('edit_box')) if(!$(this).hasClass('editable')){ $(this).addClass('editable'); string = $(this).text(); $(this).html("<input type='text' value='" + string + "'/>"); } } Also, is there a way to make the size of the input box relative to the width of the cell it gets added too? I don't know how to relate the size attribute to the width for the cell...and it is driving me crazy!

  • Reading a text file, and performing actions based on strings read

    - by user1691766
    Let me start off by saying that I really am quite new to C. So basically I have a text file (contains around 30 assembly instructions, separated by new lines), and I am successfully reading them into my program. From here I need to perform certain actions based off each instruction. I would assume the best way to do this would be via a switch-case statement. However I am encountering a lot of problems due to me trying to compare strings that are 33 characters long. Can anyone please offer me advice on what I am doing wrong, or offer an alternative? Thanks in advance. Here is what I have so far: char instruction[29][ 33 ]; int i,run; i = 0; run = 1; FILE *instPtr; /* LOADING INSTRUCTIONS FROM FILE INTO "instruction" ARRAY*/ if ( ( instPtr = fopen("MIPSinstructions.txt", "r") ) == NULL ) { printf("File could not be opened\n"); } // end if else { fscanf( instPtr, "%s", instruction[0]); printf("%s\n", instruction[0]); while (!feof( instPtr ) ){ i++; fscanf( instPtr, "%s", instruction[i]); printf("%s\n", instruction[i]); } fclose( instPtr ); i = 0; // Reset the counter } //end else return 0; }

(the first line of my file) string temp = RemoveWhiteSpace(data); int i = 0; if ( temp.length() > 0 && isalpha(temp[0]) ) cout << "without true worked" << endl; if ( temp.length() > 0 && isalpha(temp[0]) == true ) cout << "with true worked" << endl; This is my code to check if first character of temp is a a-z,A-Z. The first if statement will evaluate to true and the 2nd to false. WHY?!?!?! I have tried this even without the "temp.length() 0 &&" and it still evaluates false. It just hates the "== true". The only thing I can think of is that isalpha() returns != 0 and true == 1. Then, you could get isalpha() == 2 != 1. But, I have no idea if C++ is that ... weird. BTW, I dont need to know that the "== true" is logically pointless. I know. output was without true worked Compiled with CodeBlock using GNU GCC on Ubuntu 9.10 (if this matters any)

  • Why can't my vector access the variables in my nested structs?

    - by chucknorris
    #include<iostream> #include<vector> #include<string> #include<list> using namespace std; struct record{ int id; string fName; }; struct cells{ list<record> rec; }; vector<cells> hp; int main() { **hp.front().rec.front().fName = "jon"; return 0; } I have 2 structs. The first struct, struct record, is composed of 2 regular variables. In struct 2, I have a linked list of type "record", which includes all the variable listed in struct 1. Why is it that when ever I attempt to access a variable in the structs, using my vector, I get the error "linked list iterator not dereferencable?"
