• Security behaviour in Adobe Air

  Hi everyone! I am trying to load external SWFs in my Adobe AIR App. The loaded SWF is trying to access an URL to retrieve some informations via XML. When starting the SWF by itself it works fine. When loading the SWF from the File.applicationStorageDirectory i will get an Security-Error because the loaded App is executed in a local-with-filesystem Sandbox appareantly. First Question: Is there a way to change this? That the loaded SWF is running in a network Sandbox? Since that first attempt didn't worked i've moved the SWF to the app:// directory. Now i'll get a Security-Error because there is no policy file on the Server available where the XML data should be retrieved. Second Question: Why is the policy file not necessary when running the SWF by itself, but is necessary when trying to load the data from the application Sandbox? What am i doing wrong?   I have a custom data source which pulls out data form a flat file. The flat file contains a timestamp , source and data. I can use sp_execute to execute a select query against the flat file. I'm currently using 2 stored procedures . - one which runs a select * from flat_file into a temp table - the other which does a select min/max from flat_file grouping by source into another temp file Im using the data retrieved using the stored procedures in a SSRS report Is is possible in a a single stored procedure to retrieve all the rows from the file within a date range and also identify the min/max values for each group retrieved ?e

• Error 2006: "MySQL server has gone away" using Python, Bottle Microframework and Apache

  After accessing my web app using: - Python 2.7 - the Bottle micro framework v. 0.10.6 - Apache 2.2.22 - mod_wsgi - on Ubuntu Server 12.04 64bit; I'm receiving this error after several hours: OperationalError: (2006, 'MySQL server has gone away') I'm using MySQL - the native one included in Python. It usually happens when I don't access the server. I've tried closing all the connections, which I do, using this: cursor.close() db.close() where db is the standard MySQLdb.Connection() call. The my.cnf file looks something like this: key_buffer = 16M max_allowed_packet = 128M thread_stack = 192K thread_cache_size = 8 # This replaces the startup script and checks MyISAM tables if needed # the first time they are touched myisam-recover = BACKUP #max_connections = 100 #table_cache = 64 #thread_concurrency = 10 It is the default configuration file except max_allowed_packet is 128M instead of 16M. The queries to the database are quite simple, at most they retrieve approximately 100 records. Can anyone help me fix this? • Kohana 2.3.4 ORM pivot table query

  I'm trying to query a pivot table with Kohana's ORM and I'm wondering if there is a built in function I'm missing. Currently I only have 2 models setup for the tables "categories" and "products". There is a pivot table "categories_products", but I don't need a model for it when inserting data with this: $product = ORM::factory('product'); $product->add(ORM::factory('category', $addCat)); However, I can't figure out how to query it without creating a model for it. The "join_table" function only returns the name of the pivot table (which I thought selected the table at first). If you can save data to the pivot table without a model, it seems to me that you should be able to retrieve data in a similar way. Any ideas?

• Preserving text formatting for dynamic website

  Hello Folks, I am facing a problem while creating a dynamic website. I am building it for some pharma company, which have many products. The problem is, every product have different sections of description, and have to be formatted differently. I wanted to store all the product descriptions in the database, but at the same time preserve the formatting of each description. I also plan to provide an admin interface, where they could edit the product information themselves. I could use Joomla or any other CMS for that purpose, but i wanted to know if i want to build such a system of my own, where i could format the text in an editor and them save that thing into database and when i retrieve it, i get the same formatting. • Enumerate shared folders on Windows with low privileges

  Using C++ (VS2008) I need to be able to enumerate all shared folders on the current machine and get or construct the local and remote names. We've been using NetShareEnum for this fairly successfully, but have hit a problem where we need to run with a user account with low privileges. To get the local path using NetShareEnum we need to retrieve at least SHARE_INFO_2 structures - but that requires "Administrator, Power User, Print Operator, or Server Operator group membership". I've been trying to use WNetOpenEnum and WNetEnumResource instead but I don't seem to be getting the local name back for that for shares either - and I can't seem to get it to enumerate just local resources - it goes off and finds all shared resources on the local network - which is not an acceptable overhead. So I'd either like help on where I'm going wrong with WNetEnumResource, or a suggestion as to another way of doing this. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

• C# Stream Reader adding \n to XML

  I use the StreamReader class to obtain XML for my GeoCoding process from Google. StreamReader srGeoCode = new StreamReader(WebRequest.Create(Url).GetResponse().GetResponseStream()); String GeoCodeXml = srGeoCode.ReadToEnd(); XmlDocument XmlDoc = new XmlDocument(); GeoCode oGeoCode = new GeoCode(); XmlDoc.Load(GeoCodeXml); I get XML back but it adds \n and other extras to the XML <?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" ?>\n<kml xmlns=\"http://earth.google.com/kml/2.0\"><Response>\n <name> I have the same code in VB and it does not do this. I can successfully GeoCode my information using the VB version of this console app. Is there a reason the C# version adds this extra data to the XML that I retrieve back? I am trying my best to convert everything over to C#. I enjoy coding in it over VB.

  I have a Dictionary to map a certain type to a certain generic object for that type. For example: typeof(LoginMessage) maps to MessageProcessor<LoginMessage> Now the problem is to retrieve this generic object at runtime from the Dictionary. Or to be more specific: To cast the retrieved object to the specific generic type. I need it to work something like this: Type key = message.GetType(); MessageProcessor<key> processor = messageProcessors[key] as MessageProcessor<key>; Hope there is a easy solution to this. Edit: I do not want to use Ifs and switches. Due to performance issues I cannot use reflection of some sort either.

• Is url.openStream harmful?

  I was using the java.net.URL.openStream() method to retrieve content from the server. I recently ran into an issue where the HTTP Response code indicated an error, but instead of throwing an exception, the stream still was read anyway. This caused the error to appear much later in the execution and proved to be a red herring. As far as I can see, when you have opened a stream using this method, there is no way to check the HTTP response code. The only way I could find to handle this properly was to use code such as: HttpURLConnection conn=(HttpURLConnection) url.openConnection() if(conn.getResponseCode()!=HttpStatus.SC_OK) //Raise Exception; InputStream in=conn.getInputStream() So do you agree? Is it possible to use openStream safely, or is it a method that should be avoided at all costs. It is worth noting that Sun uses the method in their tutorial code for reading directly from a URL. Then again, the code throws Exception so it isn't exactly a bastion of good coding practices.

• Removing the contents of a Chan or MVar in a single discrete step

  I'm writing a discrete simulation where request values from multiple threads accumulate in a centralized queue. Every n milliseconds, a manager wakes up to process requests. When the manager wakes up, it should retrieve all of the contents of the central queue in a single discrete step. While processing these, any client threads attempting to submit to the queue should block. When processing completes, the queue reopens and the manager goes back to sleep. What's the best way to do this? The retry behavior of STM isn't really what I want. If I use a Chan or MVar, there's no way to prevent clients from enqueuing additional requests during processing. One approach is to use an MVar as a mutex on a Chan holding the queue. Are there other ways to do this?

I am using ASP.NET asynchronous pages, so under the hood I am using the methods: HttpWebRequest BeginGetResponse() and HttpWebRequest EndGetResponse() The response string in my case is always a JSON string. I use the following code to read the entire string: using (StreamReader sr = new StreamReader(myHttpWebResponse.GetResponseStream())) { myObject.JSONData = sr.ReadToEnd(); } Is this method OK in terms of scalability? I have seen other code samples that instead retrieve the response data in blocks using Read(). My primary goal is scalability, so this back-end call can be made across many concurrent page hits. • TelerikProfileProvider with custom Membership Provider

  I've setup two membership providers: my custom provider and the Sitefinity provider. My custom membership provider is set as the default. I want to use Sitefinity's Profile provider for both sets of users. However, the profile provider only seems to work for the users that I pull out of the Sitefinity membership provider. After poking around with Reflector a bit, it seems that the Telerik Profile Provider assumes that the username exists in its own DB. User userByName = this.Application.GetUserByName(userName); if (userByName != null) { // magic happens here... } All the magic only happens if it was able to retrieve the user locally. Seems to violate the principles of the providers. Shouldn't I be able to arbitrarily add properties to any user regardless of the membership provider? (I've also posted this on the Sitefinity forum, but haven't got a response yet. SO has spoiled me. I've come to expect an answer in minutes, not days.)

• C# SerialPort.GetPortNames() behavior

  In my C# 2008 application, I use the SerialPort.GetPortNames() function to retrieve the list of currently available ports. What I have noticed is, when ever I plug in a USB device, it's port number i s shown in the list on my Application and when I unplug it and refresh the list, the port number is no longer there. One phase of the application involves reading/writing data from/to the device continuously. Now, my expectation is, If I unplug the device during the operation and get the current Port list using SerialPort.GetPortNames(), the Port Name will not be there and I can use that to make the decision that the device has been unplugged. To my surprise, the Port name is still found despite having it removed Why is the program behaving like this? The port name isn't listed when in no-communication mode. Does it have something to do with the device being removed when it's communicating?

• MVC: Model View Controller -- does the View call the Model?

  I've been reading about MVC design for a while now and it seems officially the View calls objects and methods in the Model, builds and outputs a view. I think this is mainly wrong. The Controller should act and retrieve/update objects inside the Model, select an appropriate View and pass the information to it so it may display. Only crude and rudiementary PHP variables/simple if statements should appear inside the View. If the View gets the information it needs to display from the Model, surely there will be a lot of PHP inside the View -- completely violating the point of seperating presentation logic.

  I would like to get a list of Active Directory users along with the security groups they are members of using SQL Server 2005 linked servers. I have the query working to retrieve records but I'm not sure how to access the memberOf attribute (it is a multi-value LDAP attribute). I have this temporary to store the information: DROP TABLE #ADUSERGROUPS CREATE TABLE #ADUSERGROUPS ( sAMAccountName varchar(30), UserGroup varchar(50) ) Each group/user association should be one row. • Javascript incapable of getting element's max-height via element.style.maxHeight

  I am making a simple accordion menu in javascript. I'd like to be able to set the compact and expanded heights for the elements via the css max-height and min-height values. For some reason, when I try to retrieve the min-height and max-height of the elements in javascript for animation purposes, I get an empty string rather than, for instance, "500px" like it should. The max-height value is set in css, e.g. #id { min-height: 40px; max-height: 500px; } is all set up, but when I put a debugging mechanism in my javascript such as alert( item.style.minHeight ); it pops up an empty alert box. This happens in Firefox 3.6.2 and IE 8. Does anybody know why javascript refuses to be able to get an element's minHeight and maxHeight?

I get that .All() isn't supported by Linq to SQL, but is there a way to do what I am trying to do?

  I've read several articles that tell you how to add text to the output window in visual studio from within an Add-On (specifically, a visual studio 2008 integration package, via the visual studio 2008 SDK 1.1), but no examples of how to read text from the output window. My goal is to parse text from the debug output window while debugging a certain application (TRACE output and possibly stdin/stdout). The IVsOutputWindowPane interface has no methods for reading in text from the output window. Preferably I'd like to be able to subscribe to an event that fires when a new line of text arrives, similar to a StreamReader's asynchronous reads.
