• How good is Dotfuscator Community Edition? What is "good enough obfuscator"?

  I plan to release one small, low priced utility. Since this is more hobby than business, I planned to use Dotfuscator Community Edition that is shipped with VS2008. How good is it? I could also use definition of "good enough obfuscator" - what features are missing from Dotfuscator Community Edition to make it good enough. Edit: I checked pricing on number of commercial obfuscators and they cost a lot. Is it worth it? Are commercial versions that much better protecting from reverse engineering? I'm not very afraid of my application being cracked (it will be disappointing if application is so bad that no one is interested in cracking it). It's not heavily protected anyway, not overly complex serial key and licence checks on few places in code. It just bugs me that without obfuscation, somebody can easily get source code, rebrand it and sell it as its own. Does this happens a lot? Edit 2: Can somebody recommend commercial obfuscator. I found lots of them, all of them are expensive, some even don't have price listed on web site. Feature wise, all products seem more or less similar. What is minimal set of features obfuscator should have?

• MVC2 Apps (and others) sharing WCF services and authentication

  Hi, I've seen several similar scenarios explained here but not my particular one. I wonder if someone could tell me which direction to go in? I am developing two (and more later) MVC2 apps. There will also be another (thicker) client later on (WPF or Silverlight, TBD). These all need to share the same authentication. For the MVC2 apps they (preferably) need to be single log on - ie if a user logs in to one MVC2 app, they should be authorised on the other, as long as the cookie hasn't timed out. Forms authentication is to be used. All the apps need to use common business functionality and perform db access via a common WCF Service App. It would be nice (I think) if the WCF is not publicly accessible (ie blocked behind FW). The thicker client could use an additional service layer to access the Common WCF App. What this should look like is: MVCApp1 - WCFAppCommon MVCApp2 - WCFAppCommon ThickClient - WCFApp2 - WCFAppCommon Is it possible to carry out all the authentication/authorization in the WCFAppCommon? Otherwise I think I'll have to repeat all the security logic in the MVCApps and WCFApp2, whereas, to me, it seems to sit naturally in WCFAppCommon. On the otherhand, it seems if I authenticate/authorize in WCFAppCommon, I wouldn't be able to use Forms Authentication. Where I've seen possible solutions (that I haven't tried yet) they seem much more complex than Forms Authentication and a single DB. Any help appreciated, Phil

• Problem with ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript in WebControl nested in UpdatePanel

  Hello, I am having what I believe should be a fairly simple problem, but for the life of me I cannot see my problem. The problem is related to ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript, something I have used many times before. The scenario I have is that I have a custom web control that has been inserted into a page. The control (and one or two others) are nested inside an UpdatePanel. They are inserted onto the page onto a PlaceHolder: <asp:UpdatePanel ID="pnlAjax" runat="server"> <ContentTemplate> <asp:PlaceHolder ID="placeholder" runat="server"> </asp:PlaceHolder> ... protected override void OnInit(EventArgs e){ placeholder.Controls.Add(Factory.CreateControl()); base.OnInit(e); } This is the only update panel on the page. The control requires some initial javascript be run for it to work correctly. The control calls: ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript(this, GetType(), Guid.NewGuid().ToString(), script, true); and I have also tried: ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript(Page, Page.GetType(), Guid.NewGuid().ToString(), script, true); The problem is that the script runs correctly when the page is first displayed, but does not re-run after a partial postback. I have tried the following: Calling RegisterStartupScript from CreateChildControls Calling RegisterStartupScript from OnLoad / OnPreRender Using different combinations of parameters for the first two parameters (in the example above the Control is Page and Type is GetType(), but I have tried using the control itself, etc). I have tried using persistent and new ids (not that I believe this should have a major impact either way). I have used a few breakpoints and so have verified that the Register line is being called correctly. The only thing I have not tried is using the UpdatePanel itself as the Control and Type, as I do not believe the control should be aware of the update panel (and in any case there does not seem to be a good way of getting the update panel?). Can anyone see what I might be doing wrong in the above? Thanks :)

  I'm using a singleton pattern for the datacontext in my web application so that I dont have to instantiate it every time, however I'm not sure how web applications work, does IIS open a thread for every user connected? if so, what would happend if my singleton is not thread safe? Also, is it OK to use a singleton pattern for the datacontext? Thanks.

• Word Spell Check pops up hidden and "freezes" my App

  I am using Word's Spell Check in my in house WinForm app. My clients are all XP machines with Office 2007 and randomly the spell check suggestion box pops up behind the App and makes everything "appear" frozen as you cannot get at it. Suggestions? What do other people do to work around this or stop it altogether? • moq SetupSet is obsolete. In place of what?

  Let's say I want to use moq to create a callback on a setter to store the set property in my own field for later use. (Contrived example - but it gets to the point of the question.) I could do something like this: myMock.SetupSet(x => x.MyProperty).Callback(value => myLocalVariable = value); And that works just fine. However, SetupSet is obsolete according to Intellisense. But it doesn't say what should be used as an alternative. I know that moq provides SetupProperty which will autowire the property with a backing field. But that is not what I'm looking for. I want to capture the set value into my own variable. How should I do this using non-obsolete methods?

• WinForms TabControl: How to avoid tab-rendering on DrawMode=OwnerDrawFixed?

  I extended the (WindowsForms) built-in TabControl in order to implement closing tabs right on the tab itself ("x" image on the right like in Webbrowsers). The inherited control renders the text and images. Also, it uses visual styles on hover etc. All works very well, but I have one problem I can't solve. When the tabs are rendered, I cannot avoid that the Control paints the tabs another time as seen in this screenshot: That's a problem for two reasons: It looks ugly on the selected tab I'd like to increase the tabs' width because the current width doesn't take account of the "x" image on the right Any idea how to solve this?

  I have a Visual Studio setup project that installs an application into the task scheduler and also installs a GUI application to manage some configuration parameters in the registry. This being the case, the setup project installs two different primary outputs (.exe's) as part of the process. I am getting the following warning when I rebuild the setup project: Configuration file 'C:\my\App.Config' is being used to configure all executables Is there any way to remove this warning? The suggested MSFT solution apears to be to use a different setup project for each .exe, but I only want the users to have to run one installer. Any suggestions?

• C# Dynamically created LinkButton Command Event Handler

  So I have a weird situation here... I have an System.Web.UI.WebControls.WebParts.EditorPart class. It renders a "Search" button, when you click this button, it's clickHandler method does a DB search, and dynamically creates a LinkButton for each row it returns, sets the CommandName and CommandArgument properties and adds a CommandEventHandler method, then adds the LinkButton control to the page. The problem is, when you click a LinkButton, its CommandEventHandler method is never called, it looks like the page just posts back to where it was before the ORIGINAL "Search" button was pressed. I have seen postings saying that you need to add the event handlers in OnLoad() or some other early method, but my LinkButtons haven't even been created until the user tells us what to search for and hits the "Search" button... Any ideas on how to deal with this? Thanks!

• Handling async ASMX web service exceptions

  Hi, I've developed silverlight client with makes async web services calls to a asmx web service. The problem is, I want to handle exceptions, so far as to be able to tell in the client application whether there was an exception in the webservice (and therefore will be logged local to the webservice) or whether there was a communication problem (i.e. the endpoint for the webservice was wrong). In testing both types of exceptions in my project I get the same generic exception: System.ServiceModel.CommunicationException: The remote server returned an error: NotFound. This exception is amazingly useless when an exception occured in the webservice as it clearly has been found. Is the presence of this generic error to do with security (not being allowed to see true errors)? It can't be the fact that I don't have debug strings as I'm running on a dev PC. Either way, my question is, what's the best way to handle async errors in a commercial silverlight application? Any links or ideas are most welcome! :) Thanks a lot! Andy.

• Synchronizing Asynchronous request handlers in Silverlight environment

  For our senior design project my group is making a Silverlight application that utilizes graph theory concepts and stores the data in a database on the back end. We have a situation where we add a link between two nodes in the graph and upon doing so we run analysis to re-categorize our clusters of nodes. The problem is that this re-categorization is quite complex and involves multiple queries and updates to the database so if multiple instances of it run at once it quickly garbles data and breaks (by trying to re-insert already used primary keys). Essentially it's not thread safe, and we're trying to make it safe, and that's where we're failing and need help :). The create link function looks like this: private Semaphore dblock = new Semaphore(1, 1); // This function is on our service reference and gets called // by the client code. public int addNeed(int nodeOne, int nodeTwo) { dblock.WaitOne(); submitNewNeed(createNewNeed(nodeOne, nodeTwo)); verifyClusters(nodeOne, nodeTwo); dblock.Release(); return 0; } private void verifyClusters(int nodeOne, int nodeTwo) { // Run analysis of nodeOne and nodeTwo in graph } All copies of addNeed should wait for the first one that comes in to finish before another can execute. But instead they all seem to be running and conflicting with each other in the verifyClusters method. One solution would be to force our front end calls to be made synchronously. And in fact, when we do that everything works fine, so the code logic isn't broken. But when it's launched our application will be deployed within a business setting and used by internal IT staff (or at least that's the plan) so we'll have the same problem. We can't force all clients to submit data at different times, so we really need to get it synchronized on the back end.   I am using XML documentation headers on my c# files to pass the StyleCop rule SA1633. Currently, I have to use the 2 slash commenting rule to allow StyleCop to recognize the header. for example: // <copyright file="abc.ascx.cs" company="MyCompany.com"> // MyCompany.com. All rights reserved. // </copyright> // <author>Me</author> This works fine for StyleCop, however I would like to use the 3 slash commenting rule to enable visual studio to understand the comments as XML and provide the XML functionality (highlighting, auto indenting etc) /// <copyright file="abc.ascx.cs" company="MyCompany.com"> /// MyCompany.com. All rights reserved. /// </copyright> /// <author>Me</author> The problem is that when using 3 slashes, StyleCop no longer see's the header and throws the SA1633 warning. • Delphi SOAP Envelope and WCF

  Hi all, I am working on a system that provides a soap interface. One of the systems that are going to use the interface is coded in Delphi 7. The web service is developed with WCF, basic http binding, SOAP 1.1. If I use SOAP UI (JAVA), the service works properly. But instead the Element "NS2:GetCustomerReques" was found. Now my questions is: Can I somehow change the way Delphi creates the envelope? Or are the ways to make WCF work with such message formats? Any help is greatly appreciated!

• C#: Accessing a Dictionary.Keys Key through a numeric index

  I'm using a Dictionary<string, int> where the int is a count of the key. Now, I need to access the last-inserted Key inside the Dictionary, but i do not know the name of it. The obvious attempt: int LastCount = mydict[mydict.keys[mydict.keys.Count]]; does not work, because Dictionary.Keys does not implement a []-indexer. I just wonder if there is any similar class? I thought about using a Stack, but that only stores a string. I could now create my own struct and then use a Stack<MyStruct>, but I wonder if there is another alternative, essentially a Dictionary that implements an []-indexer on the Keys?
