  I have the following C++ code: typedef int* IntPtr; const int* cip = new int; const IntPtr ctip4 = cip; I compile this with Visual Studio 2008 and get the following error: error C2440: 'initializing' : cannot convert from 'const int *' to 'const IntPtr' Clearly my understanding of typedefs is not what is should be. The reason I'm asking, I'm storing a pointer type in a STL map. I have a function that returns a const pointer which I would like to use to search in the map (using map::find(const key_type&). Since const MyType* and const map<MyType*, somedata>::key_type is incompatible, I'm having problems. Regards Dirk

• Recommendations for a C++ polymorphic, seekable, binary I/O interface

  I've been using std::istream and ostream as a polymorphic interface for random-access binary I/O in C++, but it seems suboptimal in numerous ways: 64-bit seeks are non-portable and error-prone due to streampos/streamoff limitations; currently using boost/iostreams/positioning.hpp as a workaround, but it requires vigilance Missing operations such as truncating or extending a file (ala POSIX ftruncate) Inconsistency between concrete implementations; e.g. stringstream has independent get/put positions whereas filestream does not Inconsistency between platform implementations; e.g. behavior of seeking pass the end of a file or usage of failbit/badbit on errors Don't need all the formatting facilities of stream or possibly even the buffering of streambuf streambuf error reporting (i.e. exceptions vs. returning an error indicator) is supposedly implementation-dependent in practice I like the simplified interface provided by the Boost.Iostreams Device concept, but it's provided as function templates rather than a polymorphic class. (There is a device class, but it's not polymorphic and is just an implementation helper class not necessarily used by the supplied device implementations.) I'm primarily using large disk files, but I really want polymorphism so I can easily substitute alternate implementations (e.g. use stringstream instead of fstream for unit tests) without all the complexity and compile-time coupling of deep template instantiation. Does anyone have any recommendations of a standard approach to this? It seems like a common situation, so I don't want to invent my own interfaces unnecessarily. As an example, something like java.nio.FileChannel seems ideal. My best solution so far is to put a thin polymorphic layer on top of Boost.Iostreams devices.   To make a long story short: To add insult to injury, CMake actually ran fine several times. I was wrestling with a compiler error when CMake suddenly didn't feel like working anymore. • Validating against a Schema with JAXB

  I've been looking for solutions to this problem for far too long considering how easy it sounds so I've come for some help. I have an XML Schema which I have used with xjc to create my JAXB binding. This works fine when the XML is well formed. Unfortunately it also doesn't complain when the XML is not well formed. I cannot figure out how to do proper full validation against the schema when I try to unmarshall an XML file. I have managed to use a ValidationEventCollector to handle events, which works for XML parsing errors such as mismatched tags but doesn't raise any events when there is a tag that is required but is completely absent. From what I have seen validation can be done againsta schema, but you must know the path to the schema in order to pass it into the setSchema() method. The problem I have is that the path to the schema is stored in the XML header and I can't knwo at run time where the schema is going to be. Which is why it's stored in the XML file: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <DDSSettings xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation="/a/big/long/path/to/a/schema/file/DDSSettings.xsd"> <Field1>1</Field1> <Field2>-1</Field2> ...etc Every example I see uses setValidating(true), which is now deprecated, so throws an exception. • Best practices retrieving XML/stream from HTTP in Android

  Hello everyone, what are the best practices parsing XML from an HTTP resource in Android? I've been using HttpURLConnection to retrieve an InputStream, wrapping it with a BufferedInputStream, and then using SAX to parse the buffered stream. For the most part it works, though I do receive error reports of SocketTimeoutException: The operation timed out or general parsing error. I believe it's due to the InputStream. Would using HttpClient instead of HttpURLConnection help? If yes, why? Should the stream be output to a file, having the file parsed instead of the stream? Any input or direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

  I am using jQuery and the cornerz plug in to get rounded corners on elements of the page without using images. In IE7 and 8 it fails and I get this error: "Object doesn't support this property or method" on this lines: if($.browser.msie && settings.fixIE) { var ow = $$.outerWidth(); var oh = $$.outerHeight(); Basically it complains about the outerWidth and outerHeight properties... The cornerz demo page (here) works perfectly on IE7 and 8 without throwing any error and it has got several examples...I do not know why this is happening Any suggestion will be appreciated Thanks in advance

  I'm trying to call a parameterized stored procedure from SQL Server 2005 in my C# Winforms app. I add the parameters from TextBoxeslike so (there are 88 of them): cmd.Parameters.Add("@CustomerName", SqlDbType.VarChar, 100).Value = CustomerName.Text; I get the following exception: "System.InvalidCastException: Failed to convert parameter value from a TextBox to a String. ---> System.InvalidCastException: Object must implement IConvertible." The line throwing the error is when I call the query: cmd.ExecuteNonQuery(); I also tried using the .ToString() method on the TextBoxes, which seemed pointless anyway, and threw the same error. Am I passing the parameters incorrectly?

• When is a scala partial function not a partial function?

  While creating a map of String to partial functions I ran into unexpected behavior. When I create a partial function as a map element it works fine. When I allocate to a val it invokes instead. Trying to invoke the check generates an error. Is this expected? Am I doing something dumb? Comment out the check() to see the invocation.   I am writing a service to a international HTTP standard, and there is one method that can return three different XML results, call them Single, Multiple and Error. Now I've written an IXmlSerializable class that can consume each of these results and generate them. However, WCF seems to insist that I can only have a single return XML root name. I have to choose an XmlRoot for my custom object of either Single, Multiple or Error. How can I set up WCF so that I can choose at runtime what the root will be? • insertNewObjectForEntityForName:inManagedObjectContext: returning NSNumber bug?

  I'm relatively well versed in CoreData and have been using it for several years with little or no difficulty. For the life of me, I can't figure out why insertNewObjectForEntityForName:inManagedObjectContext: is all of a sudden returning some sort of strange instance of NSNumber. GDB says the returned object is of the correct custom subclass of NSManagedObject, but when I go to print a description of the NSManagedObject itself, I get the following error: *** -[NSCFNumber objectID]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x3f26f50 What's even stranger, is that I'm able to set some relationships and attributes using setValue:forKey: and all is good. But when I try to set one specific relationship, I get this error: *** -[NSCFNumber entity]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x3f26f50 I've tried everything from clean all targets, to restarting both mac and iPhone, even editing the model so that the relationship in question is to-one instead of to-many. No matter what I do, the same problem appears. Has anyone ever seen anything like this before?

  Greetings I am trying to get Mongoid to work with my Rails app and I am getting an error: "Mongoid::Errors::InvalidDatabase in 'Shipment bol should be unique' Database should be a Mongo::DB, not NilClass" I have created the mongoid.yml file in my config directory and have mongodb running as a daemon. The config file is like so: defaults: &defaults host: localhost development: <<: *defaults database: ship-it-development test: <<: *defaults database: ship-it-test production: <<: *defaults host: <%= ENV['MONGOID_HOST'] % port: <%= ENV['MONGOID_PORT'] % database: <%= ENV['MONGOID_DATABASE'] % All of my specs fail with the above error. I am using rails 2.3.8. Anyone have ideas?

• iPhone: Problems releasing UIViewController in a multithreaded environment

  Hi! I have a UIViewController and in that controller, i am fetching an image from a URL source. The image is fetched in a separate thread after which the user-interface is updated on the main thread. This controller is displayed as a page in a UIScrollView parent which is implemented to release controllers that are not in view anymore. When the thread finishes fetching content before the UIViewController is released, everything works fine - but when the user scrolls to another page before the thread finishes, the controller is released and the only handle to the controller is owned by the thread making releaseCount of the controller equals to 1. Now, as soon as the thread drains NSAutoreleasePool, the controller gets releases because the releaseCount becomes 0. At this point, my application crashes and i get the following error message: bool _WebTryThreadLock(bool), 0x4d99c60: Tried to obtain the web lock from a thread other than the main thread or the web thread. This may be a result of calling to UIKit from a secondary thread. Crashing now... The backtrace reveals that the application crashed on the call to [super dealloc] and it makes total sense because the dealloc function must have been triggered by the thread when the pool was drained. My question is, how i can overcome this error and release the controller without leaking memory? One solution that i tried was to call [self retain] before the pool is drained so that retainCount doesn't fall to zero and then using the following code to release controller in the main thread: [self performSelectorOnMainThread:@selector(autorelease) withObject:nil waitUntilDone:NO]; Unfortunately, this did not work out. Because Validation.Errors may be an empty collection and in ordinary C# code this code may throw an exception. If this data-binding returns null for valid input - the null value is then casted to empty string (in a text control for example)? The index 0 corresponds to the first error message. How can I return more error messages from Validate method? Thank you for responses!

  I am running a JSP/Servlet Web application and out of nowhere we experienced some random problems that don't make any sense. I checked the catalina.out file to check the log files, and I noticed it contained some of the following messages SEVERE: Error starting static Resources java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Invalid or unreadable WAR file : error in opening zip file INFO: validateJarFile(/home/weremo/appservers/ apache-tomcat-6.0.26/webapps /WMA/WEB-INF/lib/ servlet-api.jar) - jar not loaded. See Servlet Spec 2.3, section 9.7.2. Offending class: javax/servlet/Servlet.class I am aware of what this message means, but am in the dark as to what could have caused it, or what effects it could have on the application.

  Hi, I need to develop a PHP class to communicate with Apple servers in order to do Push notification (APNS). I have the certificate (.pem) and I tried to follow various tutorials found on Internet but I'm still getting error trying to connect to ssl://gateway.sandbox.push.apple.com:2195 with stream socket : $apnsHost = 'gateway.sandbox.push.apple.com'; $apnsPort = 2195; $apnsCert = 'apns-dev.pem'; $streamContext = stream_context_create(); stream_context_set_option($streamContext, 'ssl', 'local_cert', $apnsCert); $apns = stream_socket_client('ssl://'.$apnsHost.':'.$apnsPort, $error, $errorString, 2, STREAM_CLIENT_CONNECT, $streamContext); A telnet on this URL works so port 2195 is opened. Openssl is activated on PHP since I get "Registered Stream Socket Transports : tcp, udp, ssl, sslv3, sslv2, tls" with a phpinfo(). My certificate is well read (PHP is_readable(certif.pem) returns true on the file) Is there anything else to activate in Apache or PHP to get it work ?
