• Lync server 2010 Active Directory Preparation with a Windows Server 2003 DC

  I'm trying to install Lync server 2010 but i'm stuck for a while now with the "Active Directory Preparation" part of the Lync server 2010 installation. The "Prepare Schema" fails with the following error: "Step 1: Prepare Schema Run once per deployment. Extends the schema for Lync Server. Not Available: Failure occurred while attempting to check the schema state. Please ensure Active Directory is reachable." screenshot: https://skydrive.live.com/#cid=CB15F1A932B364BE&id=CB15F1A932B364BE%211742 The situation: 1 server with Windows Server 2003 (x86), which is the only Domain Controller (DC) 1 server with Windows Server 2008 R2 (x64) where Lync should be installed. First I have found that the DFL/FFL were not correct: On the DC (server2003) I have changed the Domain Functional Level to Windows Server 2003 and also the Forest Functional Level to Windows Server 2003. If I check these settings on the Server2008 with Active Directory Domains and Trusts, I see indeed that the DFL and FFL are being set to Windows Server 2003. (Windows Server 2003 is the minimum required for Lync server 2010) I tried the Lync AD Preparation again but still got the same message: https://skydrive.live.com/#cid=CB15F1A932B364BE&id=CB15F1A932B364BE%211742 I'm logged in on the Server2008 and Server2003 with the domain administrator account. If I check "Active Directory Users and Computers" and go to the directory Users and watch the properties from the Administrator User then it is also a Member of: Domain Admins Domain Users Enterprise Admins Schema Admins Group Policy Creator Owners The firewall on the server2008 is turned off, still nog working So now my question is: what should I do to make the Lync setup (Active Directory Preparation) work? (I would appreciate clear step-by-step suggestions to check.) Thanks in advance. Update 1: Now I've extended AD successfully on the 2003 DC, using this link: http://blogs.pointbridge.com/Blogs/sloan_jason/Pages/Post.aspx?_ID=2 but when I check the Active Directory Preparation again on the Lync install, it still gives me the same error as in the screenshot I've provided. • Will this force a reinitialize in Merge Replication Topology?

• SQL server agent job to execute SSIS package fails, package succeds if run manually

  I've got a SSIS package installed on a SQL server (SQL Server 2012). It's fairly simple and just fetches data from a remote data source and adds it into a local table. The remote connection string is using SQL server authentication, while the local connection is using Windows auth. The remote connection password is protected, and the package was imported setting the protection level to Rely on server storage and roles for access control. If I run the SSIS package manually, it works. If I run it from the command line using dtexec, it works. If I use runas to switch to the domain account that the SQL server agent is running under, and then run the package using dtexec, it works. If I create a SQL Agent job with a single step to run the package, it fails, providing very little detail as to what's going on. I'm guessing it's not able to get the password to log into the remote SQL server, because it fails very quickly. Also, if I tick 'log to table' and view the resulting file, I get the following: Description: ADO NET Source has failed to acquire the connection {0D8F2CD4-A763-4AEB-8B52-B8FAE0621ED3} with the following error message: "Login failed for user 'username'.". If I try to add the password in the connection string manually under data sources in the job step dialog, it refuses to save it, always seeming to remove the 'password' bit of the connection string. I thought that SQL server agent jobs always ran under the context of the account which the SQL server agent is running under. This account is a sysadmin on the local SQL server, and the package works using dtexec under that account, so why would it fail when trying to run as an agent job?

• Do I need to recreate statistics if I had to drop them to add a foreign key

  I have a database which had all it's foreign-key relationships dropped at some unknown time in the past (don't ask). I have an old copy of the database which isn't good to restore from, but the schema has the relationships. I'm working from that to create a script to restore the keys. In updating the tables, I've had to drop statistics from several tables. Do I need to manually recreate those, or can I just run the statistics update procedure when all the tables are updated?

• SQL Server backup and restore process

  Just wondering what backup processes you guys have. I am currently operating a weekly full database backup with daily differential backups. My understanding is that with such a set up, the difference between Full recovery mode and Simple recovery mode is that with Full recovery mode, I will be able to use the transaction logs to rollback my DB to a specific point in time having applied the latest differential backup. Assuming that in my scenario, the last differential backup serves as my last and ultimate 'save point', I don't see a need to rollback my DB even further back using the logs. This brings me to my question: Is there any additional benefits to be had using a Full recovery mode for my current backup process?

  Hi, I'm looking for an inexpensive way of backing up my Windows 2008 R2 dedicated server to an FTP server. To be any useful, the software should also be able to restore the server by using a bootable CD and the backup set stored on the FTP server. So Windows server backup seems to be out of the question. • LINQ to SQL : Too much CPU Usage: What happens when there are multiple users.

  I am using LINQ to SQL and seeing my CPU Usage sky rocketting. See below screenshot. I have three questions What can I do to reduce this CPU Usage. I have done profiling and basically removed everything. Will making every LINQ to SQL statement into a compiled query help? I also find that even with compiled queries simple statements like ByID() can take 3 milliseconds on a server with 3.25GB RAM 3.17GHz - this will just become slower on a less powerful computer. Or will the compiled query get faster the more it is used? The CPU Usage (on the local server goes to 12-15%) for a single user will this multiply with the number of users accessing the server - when the application is put on a live server. i.e. 2 users at a time will mean 15*2 = 30% CPU Usage. If this is the case is my application limited to maximum 4-5 users at a time then. Or doesnt LINQ to SQL .net share some CPU usage.

• Windows Server 2003- RDP functionality after removing Terminal Server temporary CALs

  I recently configured Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services for a client. The 90 day trial CAL period is about to expire, and my client has decided that he's too cheap to purchase CALs. He wants to use the 2 administrative RDP logons for remote access. Can I just uninstall Terminal Server to revert the RDP functionality back to that of the 2 administrative RDP logons, or is there something else that needs to be done? What's the best way to uninstall Terminal Services? Through Add/Remove Programs - Windows Components - uncheck Terminal Server or through the "Configure Your Server Wizard" by removing the Terminal Server role?

• Which SQL query is faster? Filter on Join criteria or Where clause?

  Compare these 2 queries. Is it faster to put the filter on the join criteria or in the were clause. I have always felt that it is faster on the join criteria because it reduces the result set at the soonest possible moment, but I don't know for sure. I'm going to build some tests to see, but I also wanted to get opinions on which would is clearer to read as well. • Best way to move a bunch of SQL Server 2005 tables to another Server?

  I've been looking for a way to move a bunch of tables, more than 40, to another server with all the data in them. I've looked around for scripts to generate inserts but so far I'd have to run them once for every table, then copy all the scripts over and then run them on the server. Seems like there is a better way. --Update-- My strategy for doing this may have been for naught. The end script, using MS SQL Server Publishing Wizard and Red Gates SQL Data Compare (excellent tool, btw) results in a file over 1GB. This makes my system plead for mercy and I'm not willing to risk crashing a clients server just opening the file to run it. I may have to rethink this whole thing and break down to just individual per table scripts. I'm not looking forward to that.

The client databases and server database structure is different because we need to add client ID column to some tables in server data base. I use this way to sync databases; use another application and use C# bulk copy with transaction to sync databases. My server database sql server is too busy and parallel task cannot be run. I work on this solution: I use triggers after update, delete, insert to save changes in one table and create sql query to send a web service to sync data. But I must send all data first! Huge data set (bigger than 16mg) I think can't use replication because the structure and primary keys are different.

• SQL Server 2008 cluster freezing

  We have run into a strange situation in which a SQL Server 2008 single-node cluster hangs. As background, we are rebuilding a Windows Server 2003/SQL Server 2005 two-node cluster using Windows 2008 and SQL Server 2008. Here's the timeline: Evicted the passive node (server B) from the Windows 2003/SQL 2005 cluster. The active node now functions as a single-node cluster with no problems. Wiped server B's disks and installed Windows 2008 and SQL Server 2008 as a single-node cluster. Since we do not want to the two clusters to communicate yet, we left the cluster's private network "heartbeat" adapter unconfigured. The cluster comes up and functions normally. Moved all databases to the new cluster. Cluster continues to function normally. Turned off server A (old cluster) in preparation for rebuilding as the second node of the new cluster. SQL Server instance on server B (new cluster) locks up, even though it should have no knowledge of or interaction with server A. Restarted server A. SQL Server instance on server B (new cluster) immediately begins working again. Things we have tried: The new cluster's name responds to ping and NETBIOS requests, even while the SQL Server is hung. We have confirmed that no IP address is assigned to the old heartbeat adapter, and it is not pulling an IP address from DHCP. Disabling the heartbeat's network card has the same effect. No errors were generated in any logs - Windows or SQL. When the error first occurred, it sat in the hung state for quite some time (well over 10 minutes) before anyone figured out what was going on. This would seem to eliminate any sort of normal cluster timeout in which it would have been searching for the other node (even if one had been configured). Server B is running Windows 2008 SP2, fully patched, and SQL Server 2008 SP1 CU7 (10.0.2775).
