• Google Chrome is running my system out of memory

  I am running Windows 7 x64 with 12GB of RAM I often have multiple windows and a ton of tabs open. I use the extension Session Buddy to restore all my windows and tabs once the memory gets too high. So my 12gb of ram will get up to around 93% used because of Chrome, now I can close chrome down and restore the same amount of windows and tabs and it will only use about 25% of memory, it then over time increases back up to the 90% zone after several hours. It seems that when I close tabs, instead of freeing that memory up, it doesn't so that is why the huge increase of memory usage as new tabs are opened and closed it just adds up, this sounds like a huge bug in chrome. Just for an example I just re-booted my system, I only have 1 window with 4 tabs open and in the task manager, it shows 29 chrome.exe processes I then killed all chrome processes and opened a chrome window with just 1 tab, it made 27 chrome.exe processes. Is this an issue that others have? More importantly, is there a fix? UPDATE I just read that each plugin and extension creates a chrome.exe process, I then couunted 24 extensions so that helps explain a portion of the large processes. Still not sure about memory not being freed up though!

• Why does GIMP start up so slow on my machine?

  EDIT 2: One way would be to disable script-fu. Does anyone know how to disable it at startup? Is it possible? Would GIMP still work? What wouldn't work? Could I start it later, after loading? Is there any way to speed up GIMP's startup time on Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit 1.6 [Dual] Intel Processors? On XP [different computer], it loads in less than 3 seconds. On Vista, it takes 20 seconds: 2 Seconds (other - fonts, brushes, etc) 18 Seconds (extension-script-fu) It just freezes at extension-script-fu. Looking at Process Explorer, I see that it's not taking any CPU at all. EDIT 1: It does seem to be taking 50% of the CPU. It gets stuck for about 18 seconds, and then starts working again. Then, the actual GIMP program pops up [...finally]. I have the latest stable version running (I think). I tried it with XP SP2 Compatibiliy mode and/or Run As Administrator, but that didn't help.

• program to track recent saved files or downloads?

  Back to windows XP times, i used a program named Ava Find that can find any file in the system, but a really nice feature it had, called "scout bot" that automatically finds new files, that is, recently created. More info here: AvaFind For example, if i saved or downloaded a file (in any program), but i cant remember its name or where i put it, i just simply looked at the scoutbot list, and it showed me the most recent files, and then i could just open them from there, or jump to their path. Since i changed to windows 7 (passing through vista), the program no longer works. It simply keeps indexing forever and never finds anything. I don't know if it is not compatible with win 7 itself, or because the fact that my windows 7 is 64 bit. I already tried to contact the Avafind creators, but they never answered, and the program seems to be no longer supported (although the site still works). Now, is there a similar program that finds RECENT files? e.g. listing the most recently saved files, system-wide (or even limiting it to some folders, discs)? And that of course, that is confirmed to work with win 7 64 bit. I know that there are many programs that can find any file, like everything, but what i want is to find recent files and their paths, without knowing their name or e. "everything" also can sort results by date, which is almost what i need, simply to look for part of the file name or extension, and get the most recent one. but if i get to many results, it takes a while, plus, i STILL need to know the name or at least extension of the file. What i want is simply a "Most recently Saved files" tool. i.e., a replacement for Scout Bot in Ava Find. Do you know any alternative?

• PHP Page Stopped outputting content After Running "yum install php-devel" Command

  This error is bizarre but after running the "yum install php-devel" command (after a long day of trying to install Facedetect and OpenCV for face detection) my site stopped functioning. The site uses mysql and php. When you hit the url, the page executes the mysql and the php, but it appears to randomly stop outputting the content of the page. None of the code was changed and the site was working flawlessly prior to running the mentioned ssh command. I do use output buffering in the site, but after removing the calls "ob_flush", "ob_end_flush" and "ob_start" it didn't appear to help—still having issues with the site. Any ideas what this could be? • How do I rsync an entire folder based on the existence of a specific file type in that folder

  I have a server set up that receives movies to a folder. I then serve these movies using DLNA. But in the initial folder where they end up all kind of files end up. Pictures, music, documents etc. I thought I'd fix this by running the following script inside that folder rsync -rvt --include='*/' --include='*.avi' --include='*.mkv' --exclude='*' . ../Movies/ This works and scans the given folder and moves all the found movies of the given extension types to the Movies folder. But I wonder if there is anyway to tell rsync to if a folder if found that includes a movie of the given extension types, sync the entire folder. Including other files such as .srt. This is to make it easier for me to get subtitles moved along with the movie. I have a solution figured out via a script made in php (yea, I actually do most of my scripting in linux using php... just a habbit that stuck a long time ago). But if rsync can handle it from the start that would be super. Also, I have noticed that this line of rsync actually copies all the root folders in the given folder. If no movie is in the folder it will create an empty folder. How do I prevent rsync from doing this... and saving me the trouble of deleting all folder in Movies that are empty.

• cannot get mssql working with sql server 2005

  I'm a MySQL/Apache user, trying my hand with IIS and SQL server, so please, if this is a stupid question have patience. I'm using IIS version 7.5. PHP version 5.3.13 and SQL server 2005 IIS is running on port 90, not sure if that will make a difference or not. I know my sql server is running because I can explore/connect to it in Server management studio. I know php is configured properly, because //localhost:90/phpinfo.php works fine. I updated the php_msql.dll extension in phpinfo to: extension=ext/php_msql.dll EDIT- However, when I run phpinfo() under the "configure command" row, this is present: --without-mssql I found/downloaded the ntwdblib.dll and placed it in both sys32 and php root. All these things were supposed to fix the issue, and they haven't. This is the code I'm using, straight from php.net: <?php // Server in the this format: <computer>\<instance name> or // <server>,<port> when using a non default port number $server = 'localhost'; // Connect to MSSQL $link = mssql_connect($server, 'uname', 'pwd'); if (!$link) { die('Something went wrong while connecting to MSSQL'); } ?> obviously I'm using a real username and password, but when I load the file in my browser, I receive a 500 error. • Directories Throwing 404 Errors - Virtual Host Configuration and mod_rewrite

  On my production server, things are fine: PHP extension removal and trailing slash rules are in place in my .htaccess file. But locally, this isn't working (well, partially, anyway). I'm running Apache2 with a virtual host for the site in question. I decided to not use the .htaccess file in this case and just add the rules to the httpd-vhosts.conf file instead, which, I've heard, if possible on your server, is a better way to go.   I was very relieved to see that Umbraco is ditching XSLT as a rendering mechanism in the forthcoming v5. Thank God for that. After working in this business for a very long time, I can't think of any other technology that has been inappropriately used, time after time, and without any compelling reason.The place I remember seeing it the most was during my time at Insurance.com. We used it, mostly, for two reasons. The first and justifiable reason was that it tweaked data for messaging to the various insurance carriers. While they all shared a "standard" for insurance quoting, they all had their little nuances we had to accommodate, so XSLT made sense. The other thing we used it for was rendering in the interview app. In other words, when we showed you some fancy UI, we'd often ditch the control rendering and straight HTML and use XSLT. I hated it.There just hasn't been a technology hammer that made every problem look like a nail (or however that metaphor goes) the way XSLT has. Imagine my horror the first week at Microsoft, when my team assumed control of the MSDN/TechNet forums, and we saw a mess of XSLT for some parts of it. I don't have to tell you that we ripped that stuff out pretty quickly. I can't even tell you how many performance problems went away as we started to rip it out.XSLT is not your friend. It has a place in the world, but that place is tweaking XML, not rendering UI.

  I'm starting a new website that will (hopefully) have a lot of user generated pictures. I'm trying to figure out the best way to store and serve these pictures. The CMS I'm using (umbraco) has a media library that puts a folder on the server for each image. Inside of there you can have different sizes of that same image. That folder has an ID on it and the database has additional information for that image along with the ID of the folder. This works great for small sites, but what if the pictures get up to 10,000, 100,000 or 1,000,000? It seems like the lookup on the directory would take a long time to find the correct folder. I'm on windows 2008 if that makes a difference. I'm not so worried about load. I can load balance my server pretty easily and replicate the images across the servers. The nature of the site won't have a lot of users on it either, but it could have a lot of pics. Thanks. -Nate EDIT After some thought I think I'm going to create a directory for each user under a root image folder then have user's pictures under that. I would be pretty stoked if I had even 5,000 users, so that shouldn't be too bad of a linear lookup. If it does get slow I will break it down into folders like /media/a/adam/image123.png. If it ever gets really big I will expand the above method to build a bigger tree. That would take a LOT of content though.
