  • Understanding Rails core source code?

    - by jasonbogd
Hi, I would like to start making code patches to Rails. Are there any good books on 'advanced' Ruby that I should read to understand the rails source code? Are there any other tips on getting started? Rails seems like a large beast and I don't know where to start! Thanks, Jason.

Hi, After search a long time for a performance bug, I read abut denormal foating point values. I have an Intel Core 2 Duo and I am compiling with gcc, using "-O2". So what do I do? Can I somehow instruct g++ to avoid denormal values? If not, can I somehow test if a float is denormal? Thanks! Nathan

  • How would you justify text in Silverlight?

    - by PaulJ
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to justify read-only text (rendered into a TextBlock) in Silverlight 2? WPF supports text justification by way of the TextAlignment enumeration: public enum TextAlignment { Left, Right, Center, Justify // <--- Missing from Silverlight :( } However, Silverlight 2 only supports the following: public enum TextAlignment { Center, Left, Right } Any ideas or suggestions gratefully received.

  • Books on Code Contracts in C# 4.0

    - by devoured elysium
Altough I've known Code Contracts for some time, as I've used it a bit in Java, I would like to start using them in C#, now that they are part of C# 4.0. I am looking on learning material, books or vids. Altough tutorials are also welcome, I'd like to have something comprehensive to read, not the typical "here's how you use Requires and here's how you use Ensures". I am looking for something that really stands out in this area. Thanks

  • Get HTTP header fields only on iPhone

    - by amit
I want to get only the headers of an URL request. I have been using stringWithContentsOfURL() for all downloading so far, but now I am only interested in the headers and downloading the entire file is not feasible as it is too large. I have found solutions which show how to read the headers after the response has been receieved, but how do I specify in the request that I only wish to download headers. Skip the body! Thanks.

  • Is there any way to test server side code using JSTestDriver?

    - by dhackner
I'm new to JS unit testing and I like what I've read about JSTestDriver. The idea of have the suite run every time you save is pretty cool. JSTestDriver runs Javascript in a browser sandbox and PHP runs on the server. If the browser slaves can serve from an arbitrary server is there any reason that you couldn't test it via AJAX? It this a misuse/misunderstanding of what the framework is for? Any clarifications are appreciated.

  • Can someone provide an example of seeking, reading, and writing a >4GB file using boost iostreams

    - by Queueless
I have read that boost iostreams supposedly supports 64 bit access to large files semi-portable way. Their FAQ mentions 64 bit offset functions, but there is no examples on how to use them. Has anyone used this library for handling large files? A simple example of opening two files, seeking to their middles, and copying one to the other would be very helpful. Thanks.

  • Blackberry - Listfield layout question

    - by Kai
    I'm having an interesting anomaly when displaying a listfield on the blackberry simulator: The top item is the height of a single line of text (about 12 pixels) while the rest are fine. Does anyone know why only the top item is being drawn this way? Also, when I add an empty venue in position 0, it still displays the first actual venue this way (item in position 1). Not sure what to do. Thanks for any help. The layout looks like this: ----------------------------------- | *part of image* | title | ----------------------------------- | | title | | * full image * | address | | | city, zip | ----------------------------------- The object is called like so: listField = new ListField( venueList.size() ); listField.setCallback( this ); listField.setSelectedIndex(-1); _middle.add( listField ); Here is the drawListRow code: public void drawListRow( ListField listField, Graphics graphics, int index, int y, int width ) { listField.setRowHeight(90); Hashtable item = (Hashtable) venueList.elementAt( index ); String venue_name = (String) item.get("name"); String image_url = (String) item.get("image_url"); String address = (String) item.get("address"); String city = (String) item.get("city"); String zip = (String) item.get("zip"); EncodedImage img = null; try { String filename = image_url.substring(image_url.indexOf("crop/") + 5, image_url.length() ); FileConnection fconn = (FileConnection)Connector.open( "file:///SDCard/Blackberry/project1/" + filename, Connector.READ); if ( !fconn.exists() ) { } else { InputStream input = fconn.openInputStream(); byte[] data = new byte[(int)fconn.fileSize()]; input.read(data); input.close(); if(data.length > 0) { EncodedImage rawimg = EncodedImage.createEncodedImage( data, 0, data.length); int dw = Fixed32.toFP(Display.getWidth()); int iw = Fixed32.toFP(rawimg.getWidth()); int sf = Fixed32.div(iw, dw); img = rawimg.scaleImage32(sf * 4, sf * 4); } else { } } } catch(IOException ef) { } graphics.drawText( venue_name, 140, y, 0, width ); graphics.drawText( address, 140, y + 15, 0, width ); graphics.drawText( city + ", " + zip, 140, y + 30, 0, width ); if(img != null) { graphics.drawImage(0, y, img.getWidth(), img.getHeight(), img, 0, 0, 0); } }

  • ASP.Net 3.5/4.0 CodeBehind or CodeFile?

    - by Donald Hughes
I read through the previous post: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/73022/codefile-vs-codebehind, but I'm still confused on which I should use. It sounds like CodeFile is the newer option that should be used, yet VS2010 generates CodeBehind when creating a new Web Form.

  • Actor model to replace the threading model?

    - by prosseek
I read a chapter in a book (Seven languages in Seven Weeks by Bruce A. Tate) about Matz (Inventor of Ruby) saying that 'I would remove the thread and add actors, or some other more advanced concurrency features'. Why and how an actor model can be an advanced concurrency model that replaces the threading? What other models are the 'advanced concurrency model'?

  • HTML comments in Spark view engine

    - by Rory Fitzpatrick
How can I comment out parts of a Spark view so they aren't rendered to the client? In aspx pages I can do this: <%-- server-side comment --%> I had thought using three dashes would work: <!--- server-side comment ---> but it doesn't work and I now can't find the resource where I read that.
