• Connection String Incorrectly Formatted [migrated]

  I'm running into some issues. Every time I launch into debug mode and hit the "Create User" button, I'm getting an exception being thrown that is due to the Connection String either being in the wrong syntax or just wrong. Using Visual Studio 2010, project is .NET 3.5 with SQL 2008 Express. This is just a personal project that I'm testing some other things with, I know this generally isn't the recommended format but for a personal small project, I don't see the point in doing it any other way. The things I'm testing actually work :) Data Source=.\SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|Data Directory|ASPAppDatabase.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True That doesn't work. Data Source=.\SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename="|Data Directory|ASPAppDatabase.mdf";Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True Neither does that. Data Source=.\SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename='|Data Directory|ASPAppDatabase.mdf';Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True And again, neither does that :/ However, rather than using "|Data directory| if I use the full path to the local DB file it works just fine and no exception is thrown, and I can read and write as I need. • getting started as a web developer [closed]

  I have over 10 years of programming experience building (Windows-based) desktop applications and utilities (VC++, C#, Python). My goal over the next year is to start transitioning to web application development. I want to teach myself the fundamental tools and technologies that would be considered essential for building professional, online, interactive, visually-stunning, data-driven web apps -- the kind described in Google's recently released "Field Guide: Building Great Web Applications". So my question is, what are the primary, most commonly-used technologies that seasoned professionals will need in their tool belt in the coming years? My plan was to start coming up to speed in Javascript, HTML5, & CSS, and then to do a deep dive into ASP.NET and Ajax, along with SQL DBs. (I was surprised to not be able to find a single book at Amazon with a broad, general scope like this, which caused me to start second-guessing this approach.) So, seasoned professionals: am I on the right track? Are there some glaring omissions in my list? Or some unnecessary inclusions? I would welcome any book suggestions along these lines as well.

• Is my project a web site or a mobile app?

  I am a web developer. I have been developing web sites professionally for 15+ years using ColdFusion, SQL Server, and jQuery. I am doing a project for a client that uses the above technologies. The site has a mobile facet too. For that, I am using jQuery Mobile. The site enables retail store personnel to gather a store customer's preferences using any smart phone or tablet. The store personnel just needs to access a special link via a QR code and a login. Anyone can easily access the site from a PC's browser, too. Some sources suggest that mobile apps must be downloaded and installed using a third party, such as from Google, Amazon, or Apple. Others sources suggest that any information designed for use on mobile device is a mobile app. Regarding the site that is specifically designed for use by mobile devices that extensively uses jQuery Mobile, is this a "web site" or a "mobile app"? What is the "proper" description for this type of site? My customer insists that it is one and not the other. I insist that it is the other and not the one. Can you help me clarify this?

  I am trying to get Openfire to install on an Ubuntu virtual machine, however upon completing the web based installer, I am unable to login to the admin panel. So far I: downloaded Debian installer Installed using stock options Added database and built the structure using supplied SQL file Completed web based installer I am now trying to login using username: admin and my password, however I constantly get a wrong username/password error. There is a record generated in the MySQL database showing the admin user with an encrypted password, and changing to an unencoded password doesn't work. What is the problem here?

• Repeated Reporting Services Login issue when deploying through BIDS to a remote server

  We are having a problem deploying a reporting services report to a sql reporting services computer that is configured in SharePoint Integrated mode. I can successfully deploy to the SharePoint document libraries set up for reports and data connections if I do it locally from the box that SharePoint and Reporting Services are deployed on. If I try and do the same thing with the exact same deployment properties from a remote box, I constantly get a Reporting Services Login dialog popping up and no combination of domain\username and password will work. I've even tried the machines local admin account and still nothing. Any ideas where to start looking?

  I have about 6 years of full time experience developing web applications and tools. I know perl, python, PHP, ruby, and a good deal of SQL and relational theory. I have never had to choose a self-employed path as I have always had full time work or a bank account (credit cards) to support a big project. I'm planning to move out of the country to an area that will not offer local employment, and need some advice on what to focus on. I want to move in no more than six months, I have enough savings to live for an additional six months, but I would like to conserve it as much as possible. I enjoy taking risks, so I'm not looking for discussion of whether this is a good idea or not. I want advice on the most reliable solution given my skill set. Some paths I'm considering: Learn objective-c and build quality Apple software. Develop subscription based web tools for SEO, or other Marketing applications Attempt to acquire freelance projects by developing a reputation within open source projects, freelancer.com, and other online communities The last time I left my job, I was building a startup (that went under), and missed out living in a beautiful place due to the amount of time I worked. • Getting VPN to work from Virtual PC

  Setup: Host is running Windows7. Virtual PC is a Windows Server 2008 running under VMWare workstation 6.5. From the Host I have a VPN to e.g. TFS and other resources. From the VPC I need to connect to e.g. a SQL server via the VPN. My problem is, that I cannot get a connection from the VPC. If I'm sitting on the corporate network, all is working fine (but then I don't have the VPN). From home - where the VPN is required - it does not work. I have two network adapters defined/configued. One as BRIDGED and one as Host Only. IF I change the one being BRIDTED to NATS I have no connectivity at all from the VPC. I have no problems connecting from my host to the VPC. Thanks.

  Firstly, is this possible? The situation: 2 different ISP's. One has several servers and a firewall running. The other is limited to only one virtual server with one network card running windows server 2008r2. I need to set up a site-to-site style VPN using IPsec between the firewall of one ISP and the windows host on the other (gateway-to-host). This host has to run a SQL-Server that I can access from the other ISP's servers through the VPN tunnel. It seems looking at the RFC for IPsec that this should be possible using the features of Windows 2008, but I can't get it to work so far... It seems that I can't access any services running on the same computer or IP address used as the tunnel endpoint? Thanks Chris

• One vs. many domain user accounts in a server farm

  We are in a migration process of a group of related computers (Intranet servers, SQL, application servers of one application) to a new domain. In the past we used one domain user account for every computer (web1, web2, appserver1, appserver2, sql1, sqlbackup ...) to access central Windows resources like network shares. Every computer also has a local user account with the same name. I am not sure if this is necessary, or if it would be easier to configure and maintain to use one domain user account. Are there key advantages / disadvantages of having one single user account vs. dedicated accounts per computer for this group of background servers? If I am not wrong, one advantage besides easier administration of the user account could be that moving installed applications and services around between the computers does not require a check of the access rights anymore. (Except where IP addresses or ports are used)

  Given the following physical layout for a .NET web application: DB (sql server, windows) - No public route (no table access, only stored procs) Web Service DAL (iis, windows) - No public route (can be accessed by web server via port 80 and 443) Web Server (iis, windows) - Public route (only via port 80 and 443) What type(s) / examples of attack could be used to compromise the public web server but would be blocked by the Web Service DAL? i.e. can you think of concrete attack types that the DAL stops? Please note, I am interested only in the security aspect, not scaling / fault tolerance / performance / etc. In my mind if the web server has been compromised using an attack over port 80/443, then the same attack would work over port 80/443 to the Web Service DAL box.

• accessing files on a shared folder via IIS

  Im not sure if this suits stackexchange, serverfault or here... so i'll go with here for a start. I'm having issues setting up a network share to be accessed by IIS, all I need to do is read/write files on the Other server. We have 2 servers set up (Both 2008 R2 & IIS 7.5), one is the WEB server, which is externally accessible and NOT part of the domain. We also have an Intranet server which has no internet connectivity and is part of the domain. These 2 servers can talk to each other happily, I have the SQL server on the WEB server shared across to the intranet server so that the web content is editable from the intranet. I can share a folder on the web server (say, wwwroot/Images/) and connect to it from the intranet server, even have it as a mapped drive (but i know thats not going to work for IIS to access it), So there seems not to be a connectivity issue. I can also set up a Virtual folder in IIS on the Intranet server - this is where it gets annoying - I cant connect using pass-through authentication because there is no suitable user on the web server (which is not on the domain). If i set up a user on the web server, eg Intranet_USR, and give it appropriate rights to the folder, files and share, i can connect, but only view folder contents in IIS, not read, although that user has read privileges!! Any help much appreciated!

• windows VPS running apache and mysql, php scripts running slow.. but cpu usage is 1-3%..

  So every night I run some cron jobs. It requires probably about 20 min to process all the records. I gather the script does something like 10,000 sql queries. I figure this task was just that intense and needs time to complete, but I looked at CPU and memory usage, and it is super low. Cpu usage is between 1-3% and once in a while will bounce to 50ish for 2-3 seconds. This VPS is running windows 2003 server with Apache and MySQL. Does this sound right?

  I'm setting up my Bacula configuration in Puppet. One thing I want to do is ensure that each password field is different. My current thought is to hash the hostname with a secret value that would ensure each file daemon has a unique password and that password can be written to both the director configuration and the file server. I definitely don't want to use one universal password as that would permit anybody who might compromise one machine to get access to any machine through Bacula. Is there another way to do this other than using a hash function to generate the passwords? Clarification: This is NOT about user accounts for services. This is about the authentication tokens (to use another term) in the client / server files. • Grant user from one domain permissions to shared folder in another domain

  I have two computers set up like this: \\myPC (local Windows 7 SP1 machine); it is in domain1; \\remotePC (Win Server 2008 with SQL Server - a HyperV virtual machine); it is in domain2. In domain2 active directory, I have a user account RemoteAccount. I would like to give this account full permissions to a shared folder located on \\myPC, i.e. folder \\myPC\SharedFolder. The problem is, when I right-click the folder and go to sharing permissions, I can't add permissions for the domain2\RemoteAccount user, because this user cannot be found - I can only see domain1 users. When I click 'Locations' in "Select users, computers, service accounts, or groups" dialog, I only see domain1. Is there a way to do this?

  I'm trying to work a bit with Entity Framework and I got a question regarding the separation of layers. I usually use the UI - BLL - DAL approach and I'm wondering how to use EF here. My DAL would usually be something like GetPerson(id) { // some sql return new Person(...) } BLL: GetPerson(id) { Return personDL.GetPerson(id) } UI: Person p = personBL.GetPerson(id) My question now is: since EF creates my model and DAL, is it a good idea to wrap EF inside my own DAL or is it just a waste of time? If I don't need to wrap EF would I still place my Model.esmx inside its own class library or would it be fine to just place it inside my BLL and work some there? I can't really see the reason to wrap EF inside my own DAL but I want to know what other people are doing. • MySQL/Apache: Replace spaces with underscores only in certain URLs

  I'm having a problem with some images I'm using on my WordPress blog. After a migration I renamed every image replacing spaces with underscores, so HIDDEN_264_4062_FOTO_IDF los MID.jpg was renamed to HIDDEN_264_4062_FOTO_IDF_los_MID.jpg But althought the trick was necessary and worked for most of the posts, some of them try to find the old image, with spaces: This is not found http://www.example.com/files/HIDDEN_264_4062_FOTO_IDF%20los%20MID.jpg and this should be the right URL http://www.example.com/files/HIDDEN_264_4062_FOTO_IDF_los_MID.jpg Careful, though, 'cause the "%20" is only shown on the browser: the text on the database shows spaces, not "%20". I'd like to know if maybe I could make a SQL query in my WordPress MySQL database that replaces spaces in .jpg files with underscores. The path of the images is always the same, so the rule should transform this: /files/HIDDEN_264_4062_FOTO_IDF los MID.jpg /files/HIDDEN_264_4062_FOTO_IDF_los_MID.jpg the "/files/HIDDEN_264_" part is always the same, but the rest varies. Is some way to perform this? Maybe a rewrite rule on Apache (our current webserver)?

• Triggering Data Changes in N-Tier

  I've been studying n-tier architectures as of late, particularly in VB.NET with Entity Framework and/or LINQ to SQL. I understand the basic concepts, but have been wondering about best practices in regard to triggering CRUD-type operations from user input/action. So, the arcitecture looks something like the following: [presentation layer] - [business layer] - [data layer] - (database) Getting information from the database into the presentation layer is simple and abstracted. It's just a matter of instantiating a new object from the business layer, which in turn uses the data layer to get at the correct information. However, saving (updating and inserting), and deleting seem to require particular APIs on the relevant business objects. I have to assume this is standard practice, unless a business object will save itself on various operations (which seems inefficient), or on disposal (which seems like it just wouldn't work, or may be unwieldy and unreliable). Should my "savable" business objects all implement a particular "ISavable" or "IDatabaseObject" interface? Is this a recognized (anti-)pattern? Are there other, better patterns I should be using that I'm just unaware of? The TLDR question, I suppose, is How does the presentation layer trigger database changes?

• SQLite DB borked when opened on a different machine

  Hello, I'm using SQLite to store some data. The primary database is on a NAS (Debian Lenny, 2.6.15, armv4l) since the NAS runs a script which updates the data every day. A typical "select * from tableX" looks like this: 2010-12-28|20|62.09|25170.0 2010-12-28|21|49.28|23305.7 2010-12-28|22|48.51|22051.1 2010-12-28|23|47.17|21809.9 When I copy the DB to my main computer (Mac OS X) and run the same SQL query, the output is: 2010-12-28|20|1.08115035175016e-160|25170.0 2010-12-28|21|2.39343503830763e-259|-9.25596535779558e+61 2010-12-28|22|-1.02951149572792e-86|1.90359837597183e+185 2010-12-28|23|-1.10707273937033e-234|-2.35343828462275e-185 The 3rd and 4th column have the type REAL. Interesting fact: When the numbers are integer (i.e. they end with ".0"), there is no difference between the two databases. In all other cases, the differences are ... hm ... surprising? I can't seem to find a pattern. If someone's got a clue - please share!

• Diagnose cause of long running requests in IIS 7.0

  We are running an ASP.NET web application on IIS 7.0, Windows Server 2008 R2, with SQL Server 2008 R2 for DB. On weekends, when the traffic is high, the request queue length in the IIS servers increase (up to 800 requests) and then drops, every minute or so. I can see that the servers are handling some requests which, according to the 'Current Requests' view in IIS Manager, are long running (thier Time Elapsed value ranges from 20 to 50 seconds). Those requests are not necessarily heavy queries, actually, I can't understand why they are taking so long. Can it be because the client is closing the connection on his side? Thanks, Shlomi

• Why doesn't Ghost 2003 offer to fill the destination drive?

  Because it is dangerously low on disk space, I want to upgrade an SBS 2003 server by replacing its existing 72GB drive with a 364GB drive. When I tried to use Norton Ghost 2003 to clone the disk it didn't suggest that I use the entire new drive. I'm worried that I caused the process to fail by overriding its decision - although the cloned drive boots in Safe Mode, if I try booting it normally then none of the SQL Express instances start and something causes the server to reboot before even the Ctrl+Alt+Del screen appears. Does Ghost 2003 know something that I don't? Or should I be using some other software?
