  • can I have an abstract base class with the key attribute being generic

    - by Greg
    Hi, I want to create a re-usable library. I was going to use extension methods however I run into some issues in some cases for the client to have to specify in the calling method the types. QUESTION - If I use an abstract base class as the basis, can I specify an attribute/property in the class to be generic (e.g. the key property might be an 'int' in one case, or a 'string' in another)?

  • [Visual C++]Forcing memory alignment of variables/data-structures

    - by John
    I'm looking at using SSE and I gather aligning data on 16byte boundaries is recommended. There are two cases to consider: float data[4]; struct myystruct { float x,y,z,w; }; I'm not sure the first case can be done explicitly, though there's perhaps a compiler option I could use? In the second case I remember being able to control packing in old versions of GCC several years back, is this still possible?

  • Django ModelAdmin.save_model() -vs- ModelAdmin.save_formset()

    - by anonymous coward
    I want to ensure that a user editing a particular model is saved in that models updated_by (FK User) field. I'm using mostly ModelForms (not necessarily the built in Admin), and wondering: In what cases would I need to override ModelAdmin.save_model() or ModelAdmin.save_formset()? Or, is that doing it wrong? If it's just the models' save() method that needs to be overridden, is there a proper way to access the request object there?

  • Passing arguments between classes - use public properties or pass a properties class as argument?

    - by devoured elysium
    So let's assume I have a class named ABC that will have a list of Point objects. I need to make some drawing logic with them. Each one of those Point objects will have a Draw() method that will be called by the ABC class. The Draw() method code will need info from ABC class. I can only see two ways to make them have this info: Having Abc class make public some properties that would allow draw() to make its decisions. Having Abc class pass to draw() a class full of properties. The properties in both cases would be the same, my question is what is preferred in this case. Maybe the second approach is more flexible? Maybe not? I don't see here a clear winner, but that sure has more to do with my inexperience than any other thing. If there are other good approaches, feel free to share them. Here are both cases: class Abc1 { public property a; public property b; public property c; ... public property z; public void method1(); ... public void methodn(); } and here is approach 2: class Abc2 { //here we make take down all properties public void method1(); ... public void methodn(); } class Abc2MethodArgs { //and we put them here. this class will be passed as argument to //Point's draw() method! public property a; public property b; public property c; ... public property z; } Also, if there are any "formal" names for these two approaches, I'd like to know them so I can better choose the tags/thread name, so it's more useful for searching purposes. That or feel free to edit them.

  • How to do your best when everybody is too busy?

    - by Francisco Garcia
    Sometimes I have seen some code or part of the project which I could improve but is not related with my current team project. Those times I have a conflict because despite wanting to help, many teams lack enough people and doing extra work seems like betrayal. Obviously any managers will appreciate much more if you focus your effort on their tasks What do you do in in these cases?

  • [VB.Net] Typecasting generic parameters.

    - by CFP
    Hello world! Using the following code: Function GetSetting(Of T)(ByVal SettingName As String, ByRef DefaultVal As T) As T Return If(Configuration.ContainsKey(SettingName), CType(Configuration(SettingName), T), DefaultVal) End Function Yields the following error: Value of type 'String' cannot be converted to 'T'. Any way I could specify that in all cases, the conversion will indeed be possible (I'm basically getting integers, booleans, doubles and strings). Thanks!

  • #include headers in C/C++

    - by Carlos
    After reading several questions regarding problems with compilation (particularly C++) and noticing that in many cases the problem is a missing header #include. I couldn't help to wonder in my ignorance and ask myself (and now to you): Why are missing headers not automatically checked and added or requested to the programmer? Such feature is available for Java in Netbeans for example.

  • Getting caught in loops - R

    - by user334898
    I am looking at whether or not certain 'systems' for betting really do work as claimed, namely, that they have a positive expectation. One such system is based on the rebate on loss. You basically have a large master pot, say $1 million. Your bankroll for each game is $50k. The way it works, is as follows: 1) Start with $50k, always bet on banker 2) If you win, add the money to the master pot. Then play again with $50k. 3) If you lose(now you're at $30k) play till you either: (a) hit 0, you get a rebate of 10%. Begin playing again with $50k+5k=$55k. (b) If you win more than the initial bankroll, add the money to the master pot. Then play again with $50k. 4) Continue until you double the master pot. I just cant find an easy way of programming out the possible cases in R, since you can eventually go down an improbable path. For example, you start at 50k, lose 20, win 19, now you're at 49, now you lose 20, lose 20, now youre at 9, you either lose 9 and get back 5k or you win and this cycle continues until you either end up with more than 50k or hit 0 and get the rebate on the 50k and start again with $50k +5k. Here's some code i started, but i havent figured out a good way of handling the cases where you get stuck and keeping track of the number of games played. Thanks again for your help. Obviously, I understand you may be busy and not have time. p.loss <- .4462466 p.win <- .4585974 p.tie <- 1 - (p.win+p.loss) prob <- c(p.win,p.tie,p.loss) bet<-20 x <- c(19,0,-20) r <- 10 # rebate = 20% br.i <- 50 br<-200 #for(i in 1:100){ # cbr.i<-0 y <- sample(x,1,replace=T,prob) cbr.i<-y+br.i if(cbr.i > br.i){ br<-br+(cbr.i-br.i); cbr.i<-br.i; }else{ y <- sample(x,2,replace=T,prob); if( sum(y)< cbr.i ){ cbr.i<-br.i+(1/r)*br.i; br<-br-br.i} cbr.i<-y+ }else{ cbr.i<- sum(y) + cbr.i; }if(cbr.i <= bet){ y <- sample(x,1,replace=T,prob) if(abs(y)>cbr.i){ cbr.i<-br.i+(1/r)*br.i } }

  • Swing and handling threads

    - by James P.
    There's a couple questions here on StackOverflow on the subject of threading with the Swing api but things still aren't clear. What is the issue with the EDT, what is the proper way to initiate a Thread with Swing and in what cases should it be used? P.S: Any sources in terms of good practises would be appreciated.

  • What is the point of function pointers?

    - by gramm
    Hi, I have trouble seing the utility of the function pointers. I guess it may be useful in some cases (they exist, after all), but I can't think of a case where it's better or unavoidable to use a function pointer. Could you give some example of good use of function pointers (in C or C++)? Many thanks :)

  • ReSharper show warning with SqlDataReader

    When I write something like this: using (var connection = new SqlConnection("ConnectionString")) { using(var cmd= new SqlCommand("Command")) { using (var reader = cmd.ExecuteReader()) { while (reader.Read()) { } } } } ReSharper shows warning on reader.Read(), and tells that reader can be null. But in what cases can it be null? As I know if command returns nothing reader is not null, it only have nothing.

  • Making web server in C with native scripting support

    - by guitar-
    I'm an intermediate C developer, trying to get better. I want to make a very basic and lightweight HTTP server with its own scripting language. Could I use something like Lua for scripting? If not, what? I don't want to use CGI/FastCGI like Apache does for PHP in most cases, I want my server to natively support my scripting language.

  • Data access layer using Linq to SQL

    - by Andrei Tanasescu
    I am building a c# - linq - sql server winforms/asp.net application, accessing a database. I would like my business logic layer to be easily testable, and that means not littering it with Linq database queries everywhere. What design patterns/ best practices are available for the following use cases - inserting/updating a new object - searching for an object - loading a bunch of related data into a sort of "presentation" object that could be displayed by various views ?

  • JQuery datepicker numberOfMonths: display current selection month last

    - by Paul
    Hi, I have a jquery datepicker with the numberOfMonths set to 3, currently when I click on the datepicker, the left side month is the current month. In most cases, the user is only going to be selecting a date prior to todays date so I would prefer the current month selected to be the last calendar i.e. March, April, May instead of the current implementation which is May, June, July. Greatly appreciate any help!

  • SeFocus causing Run time error

    - by code8230
    I am getting: Run-time error '5': Invalid procedure call or argument this seems to happen when Text(1).SetFocus is called. However, I dont see this run time error for all the cases where I have used SetFocus. Just 2-3 places it is causing this error. Text(1).SelStart = 3 Text(1).SelLength = 1 Text(1).SetFocus I tried: Text(1).Enabled = True Text(1).Visible = True just above .SelStart, but it didn't fix the issue.

  • How do I change all shared libraries used in my programe to static libraries in windows?

    - by httpinterpret
    The shared library is causing much trouble for me, and disk space is far less expensive than the trouble itself. How can I convert all shared libs(.dll) to static libs(.lib) and make my programe use them instead of using shared libs? Note some .dlls are not directly refered to by my programe,e.g. my programe requires libpng,and libpng requires zlib.dll. Is there a solution that wraps up all these cases?

  • Would I want to throw an exception or an error in this PHP script?

    - by Tower
    Hi, I have a PHP script that runs database queries. Now, if a query fails, should I trigger an error or throw an exception? I noticed that if I do the latter, the script execution will stop after facing the exception. My code is as follows: if (!$this->connection[0]->query($this->query)) throw new Exception($this->connection[0]->error); What are the pros and cons of using exceptions for this kind of cases (failed queries)?
