  • How to set up a load/stress test for a web site?

    I've been tasked with stress/load testing our company web site out of the blue and know nothing about doing so. Every search I make on google for "how to load test a web site" just comes back with various companies and software to physically do the load testing. For now I'm more interested in how to actually go about setting up a load test like what I should take into account prior to load testing, what pages within my site I should be testing load against and what things I'm going to want to monitor when doing the test. Our web site is on a multi-tier system complete with a separate database server (IIS 7 Web Server, SQL Server 2000 db). I imagine I'd want to monitor both the web server and the database server for testing load however when setting up scenarios to load test the web server I'd have to use pages that query the database to see any load on the database server at the same time. Are web servers and database servers generally tested simultaneously or are they done as separate tests? As you can see I'm pretty clueless as to the whole operation so any incite as to how to go about this would be very helpful. FYI I have been tinkering with Pylot and was able to create and run a scenario against our site but I'm not sure what I should be looking for in the results or if the scenario I created is even a scenario worth measuring for our site. I want to compile every project from source to customize my own linux system for desktop, netbook and handheld devices.   • Browser App - RAD UI Development - Is it possible?

    I've been away from building browser applications for a long time. I'm now interested in creating one for a hobby of mine. I dread having to deal with HTML, JavaScript etc. to build a high quality browser based user interface. I've got the full suite of Telerik controls. Is it possible to build a polished, somewhat feature rich browser UI while being sheltered from the archaic environment of HTML and JavaScript? I'd love to be able to simply drag-drop components, much like building a Win UI and have the exact HTML, JavaScript code created for me. Thanks!

    I work in a .net shop where we need to automate software testing. We write ASP.net web apps, web services, windows services, scheduled console application. Back end for all these applications is SQL Server. We would like to automate testing of any bug fixes, any where from web UI change to, middle tier .net code change to sql code change. This tool would be used by programmers to do unit test and played back in different test environments to ensure that bug fix is test correctly in all the environments including the produciton environment. This test would be executed by different teams such as QA, Build, and production site testers. What tool or approach do you recommend?

  • Rails Rspec testing not saving a transactional model

    I'm currently testing my Rails controllers using RSpec. In one controller, I have a model that uses transactions, so that it will not be saved unless another nested model (whose data is filled in using fields_for) is also saved correctly. The tests hit a snag when they reach the transaction. Some debugging output proves that the model is valid and ready to save. However, upon entering the transaction block, the model does not save. Even stranger, the code never reaches the else clause of "if model.save" (It does, however, enter the transaction block). I can only assume this is a problem with my testing a transactional model. Any ideas/hints/solutions?

  • Iphone UI Size / Layout Resource?

    Is anyone aware of a website or download to reference for the size of UI elements or standard iphone interface stuff? What I mean is something that gives the height of elements like the status bar, tab bar, navigation bar, default tableviewcell height (and such things as width of accessory view, indentation, etc), default icon sizes, default font sizes for UI elements (if they need to be mimicked, for instance), etc etc etc. It's amazing how many times I have to go back to find a reference or estimate the size and position of a standard element. It seems like it would be an invaluable resource that could fit on a printed page or two.

  • Trying to re-create UI object from the native iPhone Calendar Notes

    Probably a lame question for a start but i'm trying to re-create the ui object that's used in Apple's native Calendar to create notes. It's the basic text-field but with multiple lines. Sort of a text-area. Now i know that anything from the calendar in terms of ui objects isn't available but i have seen this in quite few apps so i'm guessing it's some sort of standard component.   • sortable + draggable demo - how to get access to dropped item?

    Hi, I have a sortable list. When a new item is dropped into the list (from a draggable), I'd like to get access to it to perform some operations on it. This is what I have: $("#mySortableList").sortable({ receive: function(event, ui) { alert("this is the dropped item: " + ui.item.toString()); } }).disableSelection(); so "ui.item" is the element that was dropped, but it's not the duplicated item that will now be part of my list.     I'm using a slider as user input for a screen. Basically it's a bulk update screen where there is a table with multiple rows, thus multiple sliders. In this case I think $(this) isn't actually $('percentageProvidedSlider') but the page itself. Can someone help me get the slider value to initialize with the hidden input field?     I'm trying to send an IPP print job using the ipptool. Using the sample .test files, I can send commands to the printer, but I am unable to successfully use the print-job.test file. Here's an example using ipptool. c:\...>ipptool -v ipp://name.local.:631/ipp/printer print-job.test ipptool: Filename "$filename" on line 21 cannot be read. ipptool: Filename mapped to "". It looks like it's failing resolving the variable $filename within the test file so I attempted to hardcode this value in the test file. In this case I get no error, but still no print. Does anybody have any experience using ipptool to test ipp printing?

  • Testing radius server from Mac OS X client

    I have a radius server set up on a server running Ubuntu 11.04. I have configured my switch to use the authentication server's IP (192.168.1.2) for RADIUS / 802.1x authentication, and I created a connection to test connecting from my Mac OSX client. Here is my radius configuration for the client: client 192.168.1.0/16 { secret = testing123 } I can successfully authenticate using both 127.0.0.1 (localhost) and 192.168.1.2 (ip of eth1), so I know radius is getting those requests. I set up a connection to test from my macbook, and my requests are timing out. http://screencast.com/t/tMhRLS3H7 Is there a better way to test the radius connection from my macbook? Thanks! UPDATE: I was able to successfully test on Mac OSX client using RadPerf. This is available as a cross-platform command line tool.
