• Qualifying 'happiness' in software development?

  It occurred to me today that often the real goal of questions asked on sites such as this one (where the questions tend to be more open-ended than say, SO) is for the OP to become happier upon achieving the result. We often excuse this by saying our desire is to be more productive or release a better product, but if you continue to look down this path you can determine that the OP seeks greater productivity or product-quality because those are important to his/her 'happiness'. With that in-mind I ask this: Have their been efforts to study software development from this perspective? In other words, what practises increase happiness in those who develop software as a career, and who, if anyone, has researched this specifically? As I mentioned above, they may include strategies that increase productivity or improve product quality, but by no means should they be limited to just those.

• How to handle "porting" software that's still in development

  My company is building an iOS version of an Android app that our client is developing (but has not yet released). We have access to the latest builds and source, however since the software is frequently re-structured and refactored, we're doing a lot of unnecessary re-work. In addition, the due date on the contract will likely be passed before the client's application is even ready for release. In other words, we're supposed to build the iOS version before the original Android version is even complete. Luckily the client tossed out the original deadline, but now we may have to renegotiate pricing... never a fun situation. Are we handling this incorrectly? How are "ports" (especially between mobile platforms) normally done? Is there a correct way to pipeline development for multiple platforms without so much re-work? Thanks in advance! :)

• Programmer's career path

  I've been working as a programmer for the last few years - different companies and freelancing, mostly developing internal-business web applications (well, that's the current model of development, it seems). Besides simple coding I was working on specs, designing applications, and all those around-like things. My question is, what's the career path I should be aiming for? Is it like working on code for the rest of my life? :) Or do programmers make a good manager-position people (I know, those require quite different set of skills) and I should try to improve myself to this direction? I know it's very subjective. Thing is, lately I find myself much more into the designing/working on specs part of the development project then the coding itself. How do you see it? Would you like to go from development to management? Would you like to work on a project with a manager that used to be a coder? Would you like to hire one? :)

  Software development is an area where parallel development to its fullest form is very difficult to achieve, although you could get reasonably close with the right design. This is especially true for game development. That being said, if you are designing a game from scratch from engine to front end, what steps should be taken in order? How would you efficiently manage your project and your team? I'm asking because several people and I are interested in working on a relatively large project for learning purposes. Initially, we were going to use a proprietary engine like Unity, but since we wanted to learn how the engine works, we're going to start from bottom.   I have been working with Database Development and the aspects that come with it, the pain and the joy of moving from Dev to QA and then on to Production.  Source Control has a place in Dev, and that is where the baselines should be established. Where am I going with this? I have been working with Redgate’s Source Control 3.0, and I am seeing some features that are great for the process of moving from Dev to … well something that allows for quite a level of control.  We are not only talking about scripting the structure of a database, but creating a baseline, working with migration scripts, and integrated with Redgate’s Schema Compare.  There is a detailed paper that will be posted here in the next day or so to provide step by step information of the process to define your baseline in Dev and then take it to the desired destination. In the meantime, check the Webinars Redgate has regarding this process and products.

• Web Development - How to access custom host, defined in my hosts file, from another device in the same network

  Ok, I hope i'll be able to explain the issue im experiencing. I'm working on a project, that has 2 parts: one takes all requests from usual localhost, the other handles requests from myhost.local. While trying to access both addresses from my computer, it works ok. But now i need to test myhost.local on mobile devices, connected to the same network. Usually i would just run server from my computer ip in the network: python manage.py runserver 10.0.0.8:8000 And then from any device, going to 10.0.0.8:8000 would show the project im working on. However, now accessing that ip address routes me straight to localhost. So, my question is how to access myhost.local from another device in same network? I don't want to change router settings, if that can be avoided, cos sometimes i work from places where i can't access router admin. Is there any network settings on my computer, that i can change to fix the routing to myhost.local w.o losing access to localhost as well?

• Which free RDBMS is best for small in-house development?

  I am the sole sysadmin for a small firm of about 50 people, and I have been asked to develop an in-house application for tracking job completion and providing reports based on that data. I'm planning on building it as a web application. I have roughly equal experience developing for MySQL, PostgreSQL, and MSSQL. We are primarily a Windows-based shop, but I'm fairly comfortable with both Windows and Linux system administration. These are my two biggest concerns: Ease of managability. I don't expect to be maintaining this database forever. For the sake of the person that eventually has to take over for me, which database has the lowest barrier to entry? Data integrity. This means transaction-safe, robust storage, and easy backup/recovery. Even better if the database can be easily replicated. There is not a lot of budget for this project, so I am restricted to working with one of the free database systems mentioned above. What would you choose?

• C# Hook Forms / Windows / Dialogs etc. (via HWND?) to Capture Video Buffer (D3D Device?)

  I am looking to create a very simple C# application which runs Full-Screen in Direct3D, and is able to grab the Desktop 'scene', mapping each Window from the Desktop to a Textured Polygon in my D3D Scene... I'm hoping to create a simplistic "3D Desktop" type of application as an experiment, and I'm wondering if there is a specific method for doing something like the following: 1)Get a list of all the Windows open on the Desktop (List of HWNDs?). 2)Grab the X,Y position of each Window, as well as the Width and Height. 3)Grab the Rendered image of each Window (magic happens here). 4)Create a new Texture/Surface in D3D using the Width and Height of the Window(s), and apply the Image we grabbed as a Texture. Is there an efficient 'best practice' for acquiring the actual image(s) being rendered to the Desktop? Is there also a 'best practice' for "extending the desktop" to a virtual second, third, etc. "desktop" and being able to swap between them, including creating a unique instance of the task-bar for each virtual desktop. • Bridged network between Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 host and Ubuntu Server 10.10 Guest

  I run Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop on my machine and have installed Ubuntu Server 10.10 in a Virtualbox VM. I'm running Virtualbox 4.0.2. It is not virtualbox-ose. I'd like the guest OS to have an IP address on my local network so that I can run server software and access this from the host OS. My intention is to run a Hudson CI server in the guest OS. I understand I need to set up a network bridge for this to work, however I don't understand what I need to do for this to happen. I have tried following the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VirtualBox/Networking, however I run into two issues towards the end: "To take the modifications into account, restart the VirtualBox host networking script". I don't have Virtualbox-ose installed and guide suggests sudo /etc/init.d/vboxnet restart, however /etc/init.d/vboxnet does not exist for me. The end of the guide refers to the vboxusers group. I don't have such a group and am not sure why I need this or how it should be created. I'm simply looking to allow the guest OS to have an IP on my local network so that I can access servers on the guest OS from the host OS. What changes do I need to make to both the host and guest OSs for this to work?

  As the memory become really cheap now, a couple days ago I have updated my laptop memory to 12g. Plus I got my old desktop ,now I decide to build my own SharePoint farm at home. I decide to document the steps to build a simple SharePoint farm. I will use windows server 2008 r2 and VMware. In the first part of this series of building my own SharePoint farm. I will create my domain controller. Here are the steps to install it: Open the command line by going to run and type CMD and then type dcpromo in the command line. The AD Installation wizard will prompt and click next. 2. Click next as shown in the screenshot.   3. Select creates a new domain in a new forest and click next.      4. Type a domain name (e.g. ybbest.com) and click next. 5.In my case , I select Windows Server 2008 R2 forest Functional level and click next 6. Leave the default and click next.(If you have not make a static IP address , you need to do so now)      7.You might get scary prompt like the screenshot below , just ignore the message and click Yes.     8.Leave the default settings and click Next  9.Type a password when you need to restore your Domain        10.Click Next and restart your computer ,this will install your Domain Controller.

• Code bases for desktop and mobile versions of the same app

  I have written a small Java Swing desktop application. It seems like a natural step to port it to Android since I am interested in learning how to program for that platform. I believe that I can reuse some of my existing code base. (Of course, exactly how much reuse I can get out of it will only be determined as I start coding the Android app.) Currently I am hosting my Java Swing app on Sourceforge.net and use Git for version control. As I start creating the Android app, I am considering two options: Add the Android code to my existing repository, creating separate directories and Java packages for the Android-specific code and resources. Create a new Sourceforge project (or even host a new one) and creating a new Git repository. a. With a new repository, I can simply add the files from my original project that I will reuse. (I don't particularly like this option as it will be difficult to modify both copies of the same file in both repositories.) b. Or I can branch the original repository. This adds the difficulty of merging changes of shared source files. Mostly I am trying to decide between choices 1. and 2b. If I'm going to branch the existing repository, what advantages are there to hosting it as a separate SF project (or even using another OSS hosting service) as opposed to keeping all my source code in the current SF project?

• Fixing unbootable installation on LVM root from Desktop LiveCD

  I just did an installation from the 10.10 Desktop LiveCD, making the root volume an LVM LV. Apparently this is not supported; I managed it by taking these steps before starting the GUI installer app: installing the lvm2 package on the running system creating an LVM-type partition on the system hard drive creating a physical volume, a volume group and a root LV using the LVM tools. I also created a second LV for /var; this I don't think is relevant. creating a filesystem (ext4) on each of the two LVs. After taking these steps, the GUI installer offered the two LVs as installation targets; I gladly accepted, also putting /boot on a primary partition separate from the LVM partition. Installation seemed to go smoothly, and I've verified that both the root and var volumes do contain acceptable-looking directory structures. However, booting fails; if I understood correctly what happened, I was dropped into a busybox running in the initrd filesystem. Although I haven't worked through the entirety of the grub2 docs yet, it looks like the entry that tries to boot my new system is correct: menuentry 'Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.35-22-generic' --class ubuntu --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os { recordfail insmod part_msdos insmod ext2 set root='(hd0,msdos3)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set $UUID_OF_BOOT_FILESYSTEM linux /vmlinuz-2.6.35-22-generic root=/dev/mapper/$LVM_VOLUME_GROUP-root ro quiet splash initrd /initrd.img-2.6.35-22-generic } Note that $VARS are replaced in the actual grub.cfg with their corresponding values. I rebooted back into the livecd and have unpacked the initrd image into a temp directory. It looks like the initrd image lacks LVM functionality. For example, if I'm reading /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/lvm2 (installed with lvm2 on the livecd-booted system, not present on the installed one) correctly, an lvm executable should be situated in /sbin; that is not the case. What's the best way to remedy this situation? I realize that it would be easier to just use the alternate install CD, which apparently supports LVM, but I don't want to wait for it to download and then have to reinstall.

• Ubuntu Desktop shifted to right

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 (precise) Kernel : 3.5.0-18-generic I am encountering a strange problem, my whole desktop has shifted to right. This happened after I restored my system, I was getting a blank screen earlier.(something is better than nothing). For some reason it also shows my display as laptop. Running xrandr xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Screen 0: minimum 640 x 480, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768 default connected 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm 1024x768 0.0* 800x600 0.0 640x480 0.0 Running lspci lspci -nn | grep VGA 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0102] (rev 09) My Display on window supports maximum of 1366*768. I do not want to reinstall everything please help. It is cycled around as mentioned by Eliah Kagan For correcting my blank screen issue I edited my grub file I edited this line and added nomodeset, without it screen gets all grained up. • Unable to connect to wireless internet(wifi) through KDE plasma desktop

  I installed the KDE plasma desktop through Ubuntu software center. I am on Ubuntu Lucid Lynx. After the install, Im unable to connect to my wifi connection in the KDE session. But I can connect to my wifi perfectly through GNOME session. I've tried a lot without much success. Also KDE doesn't store my password correctly and keeps prompting for authorization again and again. Some of the things that I noticed. Network is detected, Network name and strength is also displayed. Other characteristics also appear properly. When the credentials are supplied, it accepts them and continually displays the message "Setting network address". However this process never succeeds. At this stage the password is repeatedly asked many times but the connection is never established. Some of the other things that I did, I have also tried other things like restarting my modem and the computer. That didn't work. I tried to restart nm-applet and KNetworkManager. That didn't work either. ifconfig display all my interfaces and Mac addresses correctly. Since its working fine GNOME the drivers are fine. This is sure a KDE specific issue. Other threads related to this on the interwebs don't offer much information either. Please share a solution for this.

  In other words, how to use T4 templates without ANY runtime dependencies? Yes, it is possible, and quite simple and elegant actually. In a desktop project, just open the Add New Item dialog, and search for "text template": From the two available templates, the one that gives you a zero-dependency runtime-usable template is the first one: Preprocessed Text Template. Once unfolded, you get the .tt file, but also a dependent .cs file automatically generated. Note the Custom Tool associated with the file: If you open up the .cs file, you will see that it doesn't contain the rendered "Hello World!!!" • Wireless not working on desktop with Asus USB-N13 (B1) wireless adapter

  I am trying to connect my desktop to a wireless network. I have purchased an ASUS USB-N13 B1 adapter. I have followed instructions for installing drivers and disabling conflicting drivers. I have thoroughly searched and could not find a solution. The adapter is recognized and powered on. I have entered the ssid and password information into the wireless network configuration. Other machines can connect to this wireless network, and the machine can connect online via ethernet without issue. • Upgrade to Ubuntu 13.10 in a VirtualBox: Gnome desktop not working

  I had Ubuntu 13.04 running in a VirtualBox (the host is WinXP). I've upgraded it to 13.10 but I've some issues: Gnome desktop is not working correctly (I can log in but the main menu bar remains empty - I can only log out with CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE) I cannot build and install the VirtualBox Guest Addons: When trying to build it, it says: me@virtuntu:/etc/init.d$ sudo ./vboxadd setup Removing existing VirtualBox DKMS kernel modules ...done. Removing existing VirtualBox non-DKMS kernel modules ...done. Building the VirtualBox Guest Additions kernel modules The headers for the current running kernel were not found. If the following module compilation fails then this could be the reason. Building the main Guest Additions module ...done. Building the shared folder support module ...fail! (Look at /var/log/vboxadd-install.log to find out what went wrong) Doing non-kernel setup of the Guest Additions ...done.
