• Using subdomains or directories for main categories?

  I have a website which references places to travel to in the world. Those places are (of course) grouped by countries. Here is an example of an actual URL of my website: http://awespot.org/country/105/iceland I am wondering if it would be better, in terms of SEO, to have the countries separated in subdomains: http://iceland.awespot.org/ I know subdomains are considered by Google as different websites, so I am considering the 2 options: separating would mean also separating the pagerank and benefits of links to the website but separating would enable me to create a "web" or related websites (all related to travel and all) that link and benefit to each other I am only asking about SEO here, I know there are other questions raised by this possibility (user experience, administration... even password completion by web browsers)

• MacOSX VirtualHost: "You don't have permission to access / on this server" error

  The Apache instalation of MacOSX is running Ok. I have tried to create a VirtualHost called test.local, but as soon as I uncomment from /private/etc/apache2/httpd.conf the line Include /private/etc/apache2/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf , and try to access test.local virtualhost I get an error "You don't have permission to access / on this server".   Have 5,000 products in CSV file File has been re-saved as UT8 file in google documents and exported to CSV from excel File loads perfectly with all fields in demo of magento store manager (except we dont want to buy it:) When trying to upload in regular Magento..keep getting error messages on column duplicates....yes we have hundreds of duplicates as the titles of products in fields correspond with different sizes, etc...no way around it Any solutions around this or any open source software similar to store manager that can do the trick. Ready to give up and go to paid solution such as Big Commerce Also, Uploaded a bunch of free modules/keys...of open source bulk import products from magentocommerce but I cant find them anywhere in the main admin panel to use...there is no menu item for them anywhere??

• How to number nested ordered lists.

  Is there any way through CSS to style nested ordered lists to display sub numbers? The idea is similar to using heading levels. However what I'd really like to see is the following. Note each of these subsections has text not just a title. This isn't a real example just some organisational stuff. Now I know I can use <h1>-<h6> but nested lists would be much clearer and allow for different indentation styling. Also it would be symentically correct. • Best stats tool for cross-domain tracking

  We build a webapp that allows users to run the app under their own subdomain. So we run the app under search.domainX.com, search.domainY.com and so on. They each have their own Google Analytics to track individual stats. But we want to know what general traffic for all clients of our app. So we want to know stuff like "among all our clients we had x number of views." What is the best way tool to track that sort of thing. We prefer a snippet based solution similar to Google Analytics if possible.

• How web server choose between unicode and utf-8 for accentued characters?

  I have a web server with my ISP which replaces in the urls the accentued characters by their unicode values: for instance é (eacute) is translated to %e9 (dec 233). For testing I use locally Easyphp which translate those characters by their utf-8 equivalence: é is then replaced by the well known sequence %c3%a9 (é)... Browsers served by Easyphp don't decode unicode values but they do if running locally (utf-8 and non converted accent also)... I have been unable to find where this behavior is configured in the server. This is a problem as some urls are built by my application using the php rawurlencode() which seems to always encode with unicode values on both servers. Any idea? Thanks in advance.

  I just wanted to get some opinions on the best "web site copying" software out there (free or commercial is fine). I have a site that I've recently become responsible for managing, and the previous consultant has not provided operating system access. As such, the plan is to re-host the web site. I realize there are a lot of different issues to consider in doing this. However, I don't have much choice in the matter now. The plan is to use web site copying software (ala HTTrack) to "rip" the web site, and then modify what is downloaded back in to a maintainable site. This, of course, involves HTML, css, javascript, etc on the front-end. I'd like to recover as much of the site as possible to make re-creating it as easy as possible.

  I need to do client-side includes on a website for the navigation. The problem is the navigation is currently all html, and since I can't use php i've just been using js to include the html with document.write (). however, i read that this is not good for seo. While i know there are seo-friendly js navigation menus, I was wondering if there's a way to do this while including the html and not having to alter it very much? I also got it to work using embed with html which i know is super hacky but i don't really know that much about js and am frustrated being told not to use server side includes. thanks!!

I am building a lightweight web application and have decided to have sql ce as the database for it. Two questions regarding this: Do i need to get an actual database hosted as well as the site, in order for it to work? Do you know if discountasp supports the use of sql ce (not with webmatrix or any cms builds, completely custom)? If they don't, do you have any experience/recommendations with getting this done?

• How do I get Google to crawl my content when it's only displayed when you fill in a form?

  I have a webpage. It has a form and the "results" section is blank. When the user searches for items, and a list that pops up, he/she chooses one option from list and then the corresponding results are displayed in results section. I once decided to log every ip,url of person with time that visits my page. One ip was 66.249.73.26, and on doing google search I came to know it is ip of google bot. link for whatmyipaddress google bot Now when I searched for the links that this ip visited, it was like this: search?id=100 search?id=110 ... search?id=200 ... then afterwards it incremented in steps of 1, like 400,401.. But people search for strings and not numbers. And because googlebot searches for numbers like this, I think the corresponding content is never displayed and so my page content is never indexed, even though it has rich content. So I want to ask you is that in order to show google bot all the content that the webpage has, should I list all the results in index page and ask users to enter string to filter results?

  We have a website which has a Virtual Directory containing the secure portion of the website. If users come to http://www.mydomain.com, they should get directed to default.aspx of the main site, but if they go to https://www.mydomain.com, they should go to default.aspx of the virtual directory. The default page for the main site works fine, however I can't figure out how to set the default page for https traffic. • Firefox stalls on rendering when chrome doesn't

  I have a webpage that loads quickly 100% of the time in chrome, but only 10% or so of the time in Firefox. Looking at the fiddler capture, Firefox only loads 2 of the 100ish files being pulled before it hangs. The error does not seem to be on the server or network side, however, because Chrome never encounters a problem. How do I find the root of this stall? While I suspect Firefox's javascript execution is what is causing the hang, are there any particular methods to narrow down the search for the bad code?

• How to remove duplicate content, which is still indexed, but not linked to anymore?

  A bug in the tool, which we use to create search-engine-friendly URLs changed our whole URL-structure overnight, and we only noticed after Google already indexed the page. Now, we have a massive duplicate content issue, causing a harsh drop in rankings. Webmaster Tools shows over 1,000 duplicate title tags, so I don't think, Google understands what is going on. Right URL: abc.com/price/sharp-ah-l13-12000-btu.html Wrong URL: abc.com/item/sharp-l-series-ahl13-12000-btu.html (created by mistake) After that, we ... Changed back all URLs to the "Right URLs" Set up a 301-redirect for all "Wrong URLs" a few days later Now, still a massive amount of pages is in the index twice. As we do not link internally to the "Wrong URLs" anymore, I am not sure, if Google will re-crawl them very soon. What can we do to solve this issue and tell Google, that all the "Wrong URLs" now redirect to the "Right URLs"? Best, David

• Stop Apache serving filetypes

  Preferably using .htaccess files, though .conf files are an option, is there any way to stop Apache serving certain filetypes? For example, .db shouldn't be served for obvious reason (privacy and whatnot, etc.), so could I make them show as a 404 but still have them available for my CGI scripts? Putting these sensitive files in a directory other than /public_HTML/ is also an option, though I like having them in the same directory as the scripts for ease of use. Cheers
