  • How to import mass accounts into iKode Newsletter Server?

    I have sent out emails to my 6.2k subscribers through iKode Newsletter Server. And about 50 to be considered as spam. It is less than 1%. It is amazing! The web based email marketing software of iKode also provides double opt-in subscription form which is effective to target special audience. However, if I want to import mailing list to this software, I need to add the address one by one, which is a waste of time. Does iKode provides mass account import ability? Or just need to upload a mailing list file?

    i installed Linux Ubuntu after my win os went totally dead by fatal blue screen. cannot reboot or install form CD ROM or get safe mode i installed Linux Ubuntu i still unable to install my wireless stick usb modem to connect and surf the Internet wireless form my provider. i use wireless network from neighborhood And i find it difficult to download and install and save porg and application from the INTERNET like skype and real player and others. it is different form windows and not that easy to use. i click to download for example and find real player but when click on it it opens as text file only and i cannot use it as it should be used for video and download and record from you tube. how to do it. and is there with Linux Ubuntu similar prog to download and record and save from you tube as in windows? Is there any trick to restart or reboot windows OS from the dead. can i use linux to reboot windows or to import my files from the blue screen stopped windows7?   • Hobbyist programmer releasing software with a donate button

    I'd like to start this with a disclaimer that I realize that a full, clear-cut answer should be sought out by a lawyer. I am more so curious about what other users of this community have done Say that I had a small program that I had developed for fun, that I wished to release to the public. I'll drop it out there with one of the various open-source licenses, and probably put it up on SourceForge or Git in case if anybody should ever want to fork/maintain/check out code. Also say that I wanted to accept donations for the project, with absolutely 0 expectation that people will send any money. However, if somebody donated in order to buy me a beer or a pizza for the work that they liked, I would accept gladly. The question, then, is what are the general requirements of accepting donations? Can it go into a personal account with no questions asked as a "gift," or do I need to setup an LLC to avoid any taxation issues? (US citizen here). Again, yes this should be lawyer discussed, but I also know that many projects that I see have the ability to donate, and assume that the community probably has a decent amount of experience in this regard.

  • Ubuntu 13.04 under Parallels Desktop - Black Desktop after X Windows Update

    I have been running Ubuntu 13.04 successfully on a MacBook Pro in a virtual machine in Parallels Desktop 9. Today (2013-10-17) after applying today's Ubuntu update, which included updates to X Windows, my Ubuntu 13.04 virtual machine launches, the launcher comes up, but the screen background is solid black, rather than the shaded orange colour of the default desktop background (and my desktop icons are "hidden behind this blackness", as well). I can launch applications from the launcher, and there is a very brief white flash on the screen, and then it returns to black. It's as if there is a "black blanket" covering the entire screen, so there is no way to interact with any application windows using the keyboard or mouse. The icons of the launcher are responsive to the mouse, so I can right-click and quit any application I have launched. But the rest of the screen is non-responsive to keyboard or mouse. This same behaviour happens with two different versions of Parallels Tools, so I am quite sure this is not a Parallels problem per se, although I could believe that it could be a paroblem with the interface between Parallels and this new updated X Windows code. Could anyone tell me what has happened, and how I might be able to fix this problem, so I can continue to use my Ubuntu 13.04 virtual machine? (I do have the option of reverting to a previous version of my virtual machine from before this update, but if possible I would prefer to keep my version of Ubuntu 13.04 up to date with the latest updates.)   • Deploy our own software using Puppet?

    (Apologies in advance for the stupidity in this question. I'm normally a programmer, not a sysadmin, but I've taken it upon myself to automate some things, and clean up some other things which are automated but not in the prettiest way. :-) I've been looking around at various tools for automation of software deployment to a bunch of servers, like cfengine, Puppet, and Chef. So far, Puppet looks the most appealing, but I've certainly not committed to anything yet. These tools all look like they can do a great job of keeping a bunch of servers up-to-date with prepackaged software. What I don't get is: how does one use a tool (like Puppet) to manage deployments of our own internal software? I think I'm at a loss because I've seen a thousand tutorials showing how to keep Apache ensure => latest (which is pretty cool), but nothing that quite corresponds to my use-case today, which is something more like: when a human being pushes The Button, pull branch A from the version-control repository B run command C to compile it copy the binaries D to servers E1 through E10 on each server, run command F to make all changes take effect Puppet sounds great, and I totally see the advantage of declarative, idempotent configuration over some shell scripts, but I've not seen any tutorials for "you want to update your shell scripts to Puppet (or Chef, or cfengine) so here's what you should do". Is there such a thing? Is it obvious to other people how to take the things provided in the Puppet docs and replicate the behavior I want? Am I just not getting it? What it's sounding like to me, so far, is that the human being (#1) would manually package the software (#2 and #3) external to Puppet, manually update the Puppet config, which would trigger Puppet to update the servers ... maybe? (I'm a little confused here, as I'm sure you can tell.) Thanks!

How has it affected your business in the following ways: Ability to launch and iterate over business driven logic Ability to have "business users" perform the actual modification of those rules rather than developers. Ability to comprehend the business rules in general. Quality of the software releases. More or less bugs from the end-user's POV? Speed of the applications. If you had to do it all over again, what would you do differently? Lastly, I'm looking for a qualification of your answer w/ respect to the architecture. Would you do the same thing if you were deploying to a 1-machine setup vs. your architecture vs. a multi-tier cloud-based distributed architecture using 1000s of machines? How would it be different? Requirements: limit the type of objects allowed to be dropped on the diagram validate a model (e.g. node of type A must precede node of type B; must enter node Title) export a model import a model Our domain is very specific, and its a tool we'd want to offer to some of our power users. The $500 Visio licence isn't really within the business model. I'll put no constraints on framework or deployment (web or desktop) - is there anything out there?

  • Update kernel patch for VMware Player 4.0.3

    As I stated some days ago, after upgrading to Ubuntu Precise Pangolin, aka 12.04 LTS, I had a minor obstacle with VMware products. Today, VMware offered to upgrade to Player 4.0.3 due to security-related reasons. Initially, I thought that this update might have the patch for kernel 3.2.0 integrated but sadly that is not the case. 'Hacking' the kernel patch My first intuitive try to run the existing patch against the sources of VMware Player 4.0.3 failed, as the patch by Stefano Angeleri (weltall) is originally written explicitely against Workstation 8.0.2 and Player 4.0.2. But this is nothing to worry about seriously. Just fire up your favourite editor of choice and modify the version signature for VMware Player, like so: nano patch-modules_3.2.0.sh And update line 8 for the new version: plreqver=4.0.3 Save the shell script and run it as super-user (root): sudo ./patch-modules_3.2.0.sh In case that you previously patched your VMware sources you have to remove some artifacts beforehand. Otherwise, the patch script will inform you like so: /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source/.patched found. You have already patched your sources. Exiting In that case, simply remove the 'hidden' file and run the shell script again: sudo rm /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source/.patchedsudo ./patch-modules_3.2.0.sh To finalise your installation either restart the vmware service or reboot your machine. On first start VMware will present you their EULA which you have to accept, and everything gets back to normal operation mode. Currently, I would assume that in case of VMware Workstation 8.0.3 you can follow the same steps as just described.

  • Working as a software developer in a small town [closed]

    I'm thinking of moving back to a small town in the near future. Coming from a large city (Dallas), I'm worried about being able to find work as a developer. I've worked remotely for companies as a contractor before, but would prefer a full time position for health insurance. Has anyone successfully made a good career for themselves while living outside of a major city (the nearest big city will be Minneapolis, about 3 hours away)? If so, how did you do it and what steps could I take between now and then to maximize my chances for success?

  • For Windows XP: How to uninstall Broadcom Bluetooth software that won't disappear

    Hello, my situation is similar to this question for Windows 7, except my OS is Windows XP SP3. I have recently realized I made the mistake of buying a Bluetooth adapter and installing the Broadcom/Widcomm Bluetooth stack driver software. Now that I know that the software is no good, I want to install it (so I can install the Toshiba stack for the Cirago adapter). I've attempted to uninstall all Bluetooth driver software in Device Manager, and I don't see any remnants of any Bluetooth drivers there. I don't see any folder names Broadcom or Widcomm in Program Files folder, either.   • Cone of Uncertainty in classic and agile projects

One of interesting things for me was how Cone of Uncertainty looks like in agile projects (or how agile methodologies distort the cone we know from waterfall projects). This posting illustrates two cones – one for waterfall and one for agile world. Cone of Uncertainty Cone of Uncertainty was introduced to software development community by Steve McConnell and it visualizes how accurate are our estimates over project timeline. Here is the Cone of Uncertainty when we deal with waterfall and Big Design Up-Front (BDUF). Cone of Uncertainty. Taken from MSDN Library page Estimating. The closer we are to project end the more accurate are our estimates. When project ends we know exactly how much every task took time. As we can see then cone is wide when we usually have to give our estimates – it happens somewhere between Initial Project Concept and Requirements Complete. Don’t ask me why Initial Project Concept is the stage where some companies give their best estimates – they just do it every time and doesn’t learn a thing later. This cone is inevitable for software development and agile methodologies that try to make software world better are also able to change the cone. Cone of Uncertainty in agile projects Agile methodologies usually try to avoid BDUF, waterfalls and other things that make all our mistakes highly expensive. Of course, we are not the only ones who make mistakes – don’t also forget our dear customers. Agile methodologies take development as creational work and focus on making it better. One main trick is to focus on small and short iterations. What it means? We are estimating functionalities that are easier for us to understand and implement. Therefore our estimates are more accurate. As we move from few big iterations to many small iterations we also distort and slice Cone of Uncertainty. This is how cone looks when agile methodologies are used. Cone of Uncertainty in agile projects. We have more cones to live with but they are way smaller. I don’t have any numbers to put here because I found any but still this “chart” should give you the point: more smaller iterations cause more but way smaller cones of uncertainty. We can handle these small uncertainties because steps we take to complete small tasks are more predictable and doesn’t grow very often above our heads. One more note. Consider that both of charts given in this posting describe exactly the same phase of same project – just uncertainties are different.

  • Latest update to Ubuntu 13.10 broke Intel graphics drivers

    I'm running a copy of Ubuntu 13.10 on an i7-4771 w/ Intel HD4600 Graphics using a Dell Ultrasharp 1440p monitor via Displayport. Up until today this configuration has been working perfectly, however the latest update appears to have broken my graphics configuration, and xorg is now refusing to go above 1280p resolution. Running xrandr it appears the driver incorrectly thinks my monitor is plugged into the HDMI port and is detecting a max resolution of 1920x1200 instead of 2560x1440. (It's actually plugged in via Displayport). Based on the apt history.log, the latest update was for the kernel. I'm presuming the issue is that the official Intel driver hasn't been updated to support this version? Is there any way to resolve this, or will I need to upgrade to 14.10 to get the latest driver from Intel?   • Dash doesn't recognize that application is installed

    I've installed Geary from the software center, but I can't launch it from the Dash nor did I manage to create an app icon on the Launcher. The Software center has no problem seeing that the app is installed (see screenshot) Running the command "geary" will launch the app. Is there any way I can force the Dash to function properly? Thanks, Calixte PS: Does anyone know what this problem is related to? I tried re-installing the app and restarting the computer but that has no effect at all. I have practically installed nothing on this computer, so I can't imagine what app could interfere with the Dash

  • Ubuntu update deleted entries from grub

    My computer currently has Fedora, Ubuntu, and Windows installed. I just updated Ubuntu 12.04, and on restarting, the Fedora entry was gone from GRUB. Ubuntu and Windows remained, though. I have looked at these threads: Fedora login gone after Ubuntu updates on a dual boot http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=279221 GRUB's menu.lst deleted after a kernel update However, I cannot figure out how to mount the drive as suggested. It does not appear in the list on the left side of nautilus as shown in the links above. I also tried running the following as suggested above: sudo grub-install /dev/sdX sudo update-grub But this gave scary errors: /usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partitionless disk or to a partition. This is a BAD idea.. /usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are UNRELIABLE and their use is discouraged.. /usr/sbin/grub-setup: error: will not proceed with blocklists. The highlighted drive below is where Fedora lives. Thanks for any help reversing Ubuntu's decision to delete this from GRUB.
