I followed the instructions for setting up postgresql from this site
All seems to go fine until I try:
createuser --superuser myname -U
postgres
I get the following exception:
createuser: could not connect to
database postgres: could not connect
to server: No such file or directory
Is the server running locally and
accepting connections on Unix domain
socket "/tmp/.s.PGSQL.5432"?
For the life of me I can't figure out how to resolve this. Any ideas???
I want to copy one directory and the two files under it to another shared location of shared storage. Is it possible to combine the three(one directory and two files) as a continuous file writing and decompose it at another side to save the cost? I am limited to c language and Unix/Linux. I am considering to create a structure with the inode info and get the data at receiver.
Thanks!
I'm trying to parse various info from log files, some of which is placed within square brackets. For example:
Tue, 06 Nov 2007 10:04:11 INFO processor:receive: [someuserid], [somemessage] msgtype=[T]
What's an elegant way to grab 'someuserid' from these lines, using sed, awk, or other unix utility?
Hello
I have a table : tags(tagname, entryid, stamp) and i want to make a section for the most trending tags today, the tagname column has no unique value, because many entries has the same tag, so the php code that i want should display the most attached tags today.
Note: the "stamp" column is the date of adding the tag in UNIX time stamp format.
Thanks
Are there any alternatives to stat (which is found on most Unix systems) which can determine the file type? The manpage says that a call to stat is expensive, and I need to call it quite often in my app.
I'm looking for a JVM profiler (preferably open source) so I can look at the heap and cpu usage of my personal website.
I've used Lambda Probe, and I like it because it provides a web interface for my remote Unix computer that has no display. I was wondering what else is available
Thanks,
I'm learning to use the PHP interactive shell, but I'm having trouble with multi-line code.
Using backslashes like in the UNIX shells doesn't seem to work. What am I doing wrong ?
php > function test(){\
php { echo "test";\
php { }\
php > test();
PHP Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_ECHO, expecting T_STRING in php shell code on line 2
Several console based applications like vim or lynx offer a rich user interface which enables the user to navigate freely around the console, manipulate data directly on screen, access menus and much more, similar to "modern" gui applications.
How is that being achieved in principal on Unix/Linux with C++? Do you directly manipulate some kind of character buffer or is the screen constantly cleared and reprinted to stdout?
Is there a set of libraries to implement such behavior or even some kind of a "modern" event-driven GUI toolkit for the console?
I'd like to pass parameters to my C++ program in the following manner:
./myprog --setting=value
Are there any libraries which will help me to do this easily?

i cant open it since its a binary file.

are the contents of the object file mainly Dependant on the compiler which we use on unix?
Hi,
I want to create a script that checks an URL and perform an action (download + unzip) when the "Last-Modified" header of the remote file changed. I thought about fetching the header with curl but then I have to store it somewhere for each file and perform a date comparison.
Does anyone have a different idea using (mostly) standard unix tools?
thanks
How are \r and \n different. I think it has something to do with Unix vs. Windows vs. Mac, but I'm not sure how exactly they're difference, and which to search for/match in regexes.
I installed emacs 23.3.1 in c:/emacs-23.3.
Following the hints in this page, I updated the site-start.el to set HOME environment variable.
(setenv "HOME" "c:/users/USER/emacs")
And I made c:/users/USER/.emacs (like I did in unix/mac) to write the code for using slime, but it doesn't seem to start slime correctly.
Is this a correct way of setting emacs in Windows 7? Where do I put the .emacs file?
I have set up Synergy on Unix systems with no problems, however when I set up a Synergy server on a Windows Server 2003 box using I get an error message that the mouse cursor is locked when trying to move to the client system. I use a Microsoft Natural keyboard in case that matters (seems Scroll Lock might be involved). Does anyone have experience with using Synergy on Windows systems that have reported mouse screen locking in the log when unable to mouse over to a client system?
I have unix timestamps from time zone X which is not known,
the current timestamp(now()) in TZ X is known 1275143019,
how to approach a javascript function so that it can generate the datetime in the users current TZ in the format 2010-05-29 15:32:35 ?
I have a Java web app that I develop on a Windows machine and will deploy on a Unix machine.
There are some file path settings and permissions details that differ on the two (and there is nothing I can do to change this). Is there some way of detecting which machine the app is sitting on (it's only one of two), either by detecting the operating system or the computer's name so I can then using the appropriate settings.
I develop my app in linux for both unix and win32(cross compile at each build) plataforms, so a ready to use function would be nice :). I'm using glib that has the 'gchar* g_get_current_dir(void)' function and it returns the current directory, but what I really need is the executable's dir. I'm inexperienced in C programming so any sugestions are welcome.
I have a bunch of text files where I want to add a line ending after each period.
I'm wondering if there is a way to do this by doing replacing all periods with a \n\n, assuming I have the right encoding (unix).
Anyone know how I would do this? Replace .'s with \n\n and then save as a different file?
Thanks!
We have a problem in cloning a repository created in unix in to a Windows box.
Git fails while checking out a lengthy file that has more than 32 characters in windows.
The file name is given below.
BaseFCS_x0020_OnLine_x0020_Identicheck_x0020_verification_x0020_serviceConsumer.java*
Is there a way to fix this issue in Git?
I have install apache, php and mysql on Mac 10.8.1.

I have a Java application that I run from a console which in turn exec's another Java process. I want to get a thread/heap dump of that child process. On Unix I could do a "kill -3 " but on Windows AFAIK the only way to get a thread dump is Ctrl-Break in the console. But that only gives me the dump of the parent process, not the child. Is there another way to get that heap dump?
