• kerberos5 unable to authenticate

  We have a Debian file server, configured to serve up samba shares, using winbind and kerberos. This is configured to authenticate against a Windows2003 DC. All worked fine until recently when I did a maintenance update on all packages. Since then, all attempts to connect to any of the shares (and also to just log into the box) fail. The logs contain this message, which seems to be at the root of the evil: [2009/09/14 12:04:29, 10] libsmb/clikrb5.c:get_krb5_smb_session_key(685) Got KRB5 session key of length 16 [2009/09/14 12:04:29, 10] libsmb/clikrb5.c:unwrap_pac(280) authorization data is not a Windows PAC (type: 141) [2009/09/14 12:04:29, 3] libads/kerberos_verify.c:ads_verify_ticket(430) ads_verify_ticket: did not retrieve auth data. continuing without PAC From there on it fails to find the user account on the DC, subsequently remaps the user to user nobody and then (rightly) refuses to grant access to the share. However, the following works just fine: wbinfo -a user%password I was wondering whether anybody has had this problem and could provide some insight. I would be happy to provide neutralised config files.

  After hearing about some of the features in 12.10, I decided to upgrade my Ubuntu from 12.04 LTS to the newer 12.10. However, when I try to upgrade it, I start the update manager, like always, and I start the distro upgrade, just like I do every time there's a new version, but at the end of the "Setting new software channels" stage, it fails, saying: Could not calculate the upgrade An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. This can be caused by: Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the command 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal. What should I do? I understand that I have some sort of "broken" package on my system, but how do I identify and remove the problem? • Advantages / disadvantages of having DynDNS access on a computer vs the router

  I have a shiny new toy, a Cisco Wireless-N Gigabit Security Router with VPN (WRVS4400N). While looking through the instruction manual, I discovered that it had support for DynDNS built-in. We've currently got the DynDNS client running on one of the servers (that people SSH to, as documented in this question); but the reason for the router update is to move away from SSH to VPN. To that end, is there any difference in behaviour/functionality/maintainability to run it off the computer, as opposed to the router? Thus far, DynDNS has more or less a set-and-forget setup, but since the feature was there, I wanted to know if it was a better location for the process...

  Trying to find out how to "modify" KMS to also accept the Office 2010 KMS key. Can anyone point me to some document about this? Basically - do I have to install an update to KMS? I wand my KMS server to authenticate both, Windows (It currently has a DataCenter R2 KMS key installed) as well as Office 2010. Keys are available ;) I can not imagine I just ptu it in - would this not overwrite the DataCenter key? I tried the MSDN website, but there is no clear document visible for my question.

• How can a large, Fortran-based number crunching codebase be modernized?

  A friend in academia asked me for advice (I'm a C# business application developer). He has a legacy codebase which he wrote in Fortran in the medical imaging field. It does a huge amount of number crunching using vectors. He uses a cluster (30ish cores) and has now gone towards a single workstation with 500ish GPUS in it. However where to go next with the codebase so: Other people can maintain it over next 10 year cycle Get faster at tweaking the software Can run on different infrastructures without recompiles After some research from me (this is a super interesting area) some options are: Use Python and CUDA from Nvidia Rewrite in a functional language. For example, F# or Haskell Go cloud based and use something like Hadoop and Java Learn C What has been your experience with this? What should my friend be looking at to modernize his codebase? UPDATE: Thanks @Mark and everyone who has answered. The reasons my friend is asking this question is that it's a perfect time in the projects lifecycle to do a review. Bringing research assistants up to speed in Fortran takes time (I like C#, and especially the tooling and can't imagine going back to older languages!!) I liked the suggestion of keeping the pure number crunching in Fortran, but wrapping it in something newer. Perhaps Python as that seems to be getting a stronghold in academia as a general-purpose programming language that is fairly easy to pick up. • Ports do not open after rules appended in iptables

  I have a server that I am trying to setup for OpenVPN. I have followed all the steps, but I see that when I try to connect to it in Windows, it doesn't allow me, it just hangs on connecting, so I did a nmap scan and I see that port 1194 is not open so naturally I append the rule to open 1194 with: iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 1194 -j ACCEPT followed by service iptables save and service iptables restart which all executed successfully.   I'm tring to install NetLimiter 3 (3.0.0.10, x64) on my Windows 7 x64 machine. At the driver installation step, I'm getting an error: Error 0x8004a029: Couldn't install the network component. (InstallNdisIMDriver) UPDATE 2010-09-20: I received a response to my support request: Hi Simon, It seems that problem is rather on your system than in NL3. Too many networking applications (VPN, Virtual computers) are installed on your machine and they are preventing NL3 from proper installation. In order to install NetLimiter 3, try to disable/temporarily remove these apps. Several users had the same problem and shuffling with adapter and networking software helped them. • DNS hijack - prevention tips

  Hi there, Over the weekend it looks like the DNS was hijacked on two of my domains. My set up is I have the sites registered on 1and1.co.uk, with dns nameservers pointing to Hostgator in the US where the sites are hosted. I also had cloudflare CDN running on the sites (via hostgator cpanel). My question is any ideas as to how this happened, and how I could either monitor it so I know if it occurs again, or strengthen the set up/service to minimise the risk. History: I received a ping from my site monitoring service that the sites were down. When I checked the sites were up so I assumed it was local to the monitoring service I received a ping last night the sites were up When I checked, one site was redirecting to download-manual.com (and checking that URL now, the home page is not the same as the one I saw, so they too may have been hijacked/hacked) The other site URL remained the same but had one of those standard site search pages which bounce you off to either phishing or paid for search sites I notified Hostgator who told me Cloudflare or 1and1 were the issue. I removed cloudflare, and contacted both them and hostgator, and am awaiting a response, but am not holding my breath. Is this common? I've never heard of this or come across this before. It's pretty scary that this can happen so easily. Appreciate any input. **Update: I've now spoken to support at 1and1, Hostgator, and Cloudflare, and each one claims it has nothing to do with them, and must be one of the others. Larry, curly, moe.

  Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). One of the things I like to do, for development environments only is to get rid of that excessively bothersome password policies. I like to have my password as something like p@ssword1, so they are easy to remember etc. etc. Obviously never do this in production. However, Windows Server 2008 comes with a password policy that expires my passwords every 90 days, and requires me to pick complex passwords, can’t reuse passwords etc. etc. Well here is how you disable password policy on a Windows Server 2008 machine - Run Group Policy Management (gpmc.msc) Expand to your domain, look for Forest\Domains\yourdomain\default domain policy. Go to the settings tab, right click on the tab, and choose “Edit”. This will open the Group Policy Management Editor, in which - Go to Computer Configuration\Policies\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Account Policies\Password Policy, and change the policy to whatever that suits you. Close everything, and run command prompt as administrator, and issue a “gpupdate /force” command to force the group policy update on the machine. • No sound from Java web applet

  Using Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox browsers on Ubuntu 9.10, I am unable to get any sound out from Java (version 6 update 15) on Runescape or WebSDR. I'm only interested in getting WebSDR working and Runescape was the only other web applet I knew would have sound. Sound does work in a test applet I downloaded when run from the command line so it seems to be a web specific issue. Anyone else encountered or solved this or a similar issue? Are there any better applets out there that I can use to test my sound?

  Say I had 4 videos with the following names: Main Video.mov Top Left.mov Top Right.mov Top Mid.mov and I wanted to have "Main Video" play with a picture in picture effect with boxes of videos playing in the top left, top right and top mid. Each box would have the video that is similarly named. This command will do picture in picture for 2 videos, with one video in the lower right. ffmpeg -i 2013-07-31\ 231548.MOV -vf "movie=2013-07-31\ 231722.MOV, scale=iw/5:ih/5 [small]; [in][small] overlay=main_w*0.77:main_h*0.77 [out]" -strict -2 output.mov Can someone help me update this command to work with the 4 files I mentioned above? • Mac OS X: All bootcamp options start Windows

  I just installed the latest security update on Mac OS X (installed on 2-10-2010). On restart my Mac booted in Windows 7, which I had installed previously and was set not to boot by default. I tried to restart holding the alt key, and selected the Mac OS X partition, but still the Windows 7 partition boots. It does not matter what partition I choose, Windows 7 always boots. I took a look in the OS X partition and noticed that the admin home folder is empty, or at least Windows is not showing any files there. There is another user on OS X and I can see their files no problem. This has me stumped, has anyone any suggestions for a finding a solution?

• Windows XP to Ubuntu 10.04 via VNC does not refresh

  I've tried tightvncserver and vnc4server on Ubuntu. I've tried tightvnc viewer and ultravnc viewer on Windows XP. I can connect from Windows to Ubuntu with any combination, but there is no screen refresh: I can drag a window on Ubuntu using my mouse in Windows or type into a terminal in Ubuntu from my keyboard in Windows, but the image does not change on Windows. I can request a screen refresh from Windows but the screen does not update. I am running the ATI driver on Ubuntu. I've tried stepping the System|Preferences|Appearance|Visual Effects down from Extra to Normal with no effect.

• Upgraded to 13.10 now clock settings are all disabled and clock does not display

  I've upgraded to 13.10 and now I don't have the standard menu clock, which I need for work. I checked and 'indicator-datetime' is installed. I even uninstalled/reinstalled that applet with no luck. Also my "clock" settings under System Preferences are all disabled. I can't change anything. Does anyone know how I can get the old menu clock back? Alternatively is there another menu clock app I can download? Thanks for the responses I've restarted several times and that didn't fix the issue. I just ran the 13.10 update today. But I ran it again a few minutes ago. I got about 200KB in random updates. • Setting the Timezone with an automated script

  I'm writing scripts to automate setting up new slicehost installations. In a perfect world, after I started the script, it would just run, with no attention from me. I have succeeded, with one exception. How do I set the timezone, in a permanent (survive reboot) and sane (adjust for standard and daylight savings time, so no just forcing the date) ... manner that doesn't require input from me? Currently, I'm using dpkg-reconfigure tzdata This doesn't seem to have any way to force parameters into it. It demands user input. EDIT: I'm editing here, rather than commenting, since comments don't seem to allow code blocks. Here's the actual code I ended up with, based on Rudedog's comment below. I also noticed that this doesn't update /etc/timezone. I'm not certain who uses that, but in case anybody does, I'm setting that too.   Possible Duplicate: Cannot Connect To Internet In Automatic (pppoe) Mode Of Modem My TP-LINK-8901 modem does not connect to internet with "always on" (automatic) connection. I have to put it in bridge mode and make a connection in Windows to connect to internet. Also, there is no configuration problem. What I did: Reset modem Update firmware Is there any way to solve the problem myself, e.g. through hardware or software? I can't have it repaired because the warranty already expired.

  Alt-Tab looses focus and have to hit Alt-Grave Accent to get focus I have ubuntu 12.4 with Unity window manager. I have a gvim window and a firefox window open. I hit Alt-Tab to switch between the two. Sometimes the gvim window doesn't have focus and I have to hit Alt-GraveAccent (Alt-`) to get the gvim window to have focus (ie: have the cursor a solid white square instead of a outline of a square) I do this to move between firefox where I highlight some text and do a copy, then Alt-Tab to gvim and do a paste. Sometimes the focus isn't in gvim and the paste doesn't work. I then have to do an Alt-graveAccent to get the focus into gvim or click the gvim window. These extra steps slow my process down and it makes it difficult to get into a smooth rythum. I saw this: ALT+TAB loses focus Maybe the Alt-GraveAccent may help someone. • rsync creating thousands of ..ds_store files from mounted volume

  I've been using rsync on OS X to sync all our website admins. It was working fine until the OS X 10.6.3 update! Now it creates thousands of empty (0-kb) folders. It only does it when synching to a mounted network drive (which we need to do) as when I sync to my local drive it works as usual!
