  • Debian/Ubuntu apt or pbuilder without root privileges?

    I want to use apt or pbuilder to build a package in user's home directory. The home directory has enough space to hold the package's source, its dependencies and binary output. But the apt and pbuilder documents say that you have to be a root user (sudo) to use it. It's frustrating, as the only way now I have at my disposal is to build the package from source or use the dumba$$ (sorry for bad language) dpkg and in both cases figure out every dependency manually, create the dir layout manually and install the built things manually. Now if I can do all these things manually, why the tool writers (apt) think that doing so using their tool (apt) is somehow more special/dangerous? I don't want to use root privileges JUST to build and test a user-land package. If I am NOT allowed to do anything outside my home dir then why NOT the apt or pbuilder type commands be allowed to "build" something in my home dir without root privileges? I just want to use their functionality. It seems there is nothing like Gentoo Prefix from Debian

  • Question SpeechSynthesizer.SetOutputToAudioStream audio format problem

    Hi, I'm currently working on an application which requires transmission of speech encoded to a specific audio format. System.Speech.AudioFormat.SpeechAudioFormatInfo synthFormat = new System.Speech.AudioFormat.SpeechAudioFormatInfo(System.Speech.AudioFormat.EncodingFormat.Pcm, 8000, 16, 1, 16000, 2, null); This states that the audio is in PCM format, 8000 samples per second, 16 bits per sample, mono, 16000 average bytes per second, block alignment of 2. When I attempt to execute the following code there is nothing written to my MemoryStream instance; however when I change from 8000 samples per second up to 11025 the audio data is written successfully. I have a workaround involving a wav file that I generated and converted to the correct sample rate using some sound editing tools, but I would like to generate the audio from within the application if I can. One particular point of interest was that the SpeechRecognitionEngine accepts that audio format and successfully recognized the speech in my synthesized wave file... Update: Recently discovered that this audio format succeeds for certain installed voices, but fails for others. It fails specifically for LH Michael and LH Michelle, and failure varies for certain voice settings defined in the PromptBuilder.

  • Bootstrap a debian build environment and build source packages with no root privileges

    On debian squeeze, I am trying to do the following : fetch sources package from the wheezy source repository bootstrap a squeeze chroot for several architectures build the packages for several architectures (i386, amd64 + all and any) I want both the fetching, bootstrapping and build operation to be scriptable, repeatable, and run as a normal user. For the environment setup, I want to make as little use of the root account as possible (install the necessary dependencies, and maybe some visudo stuff). If possible I would like to avoid using a VM (pbuilder with user mode linux) So far I have tried several things with pbuilder (require root), debootstrap (require root) with little success.   • Getting file not found error with pdebuild

    I am attempting to build a Debian package using pdebuild on my main development server (running Debian wheezy).   • Skip makefile dependency generation for certain targets (e.g. `clean`)

    I have several C and C++ projects that all follow a basic structure I've been using for a while now. My source files go in src/*.c, intermediate files in obj/*.[do], and the actual executable in the top level directory. My makefiles follow roughly this template: # The final executable TARGET := something # Source files (without src/) INPUTS := foo.c bar.c baz.c # OBJECTS will contain: obj/foo.o obj/bar.o obj/baz.o OBJECTS := $(INPUTS:%.cpp=obj/%.o) # DEPFILES will contain: obj/foo.d obj/bar.d obj/baz.d DEPFILES := $(OBJECTS:%.o=%.d) all: $(TARGET) obj/%.o: src/%.cpp $(CC) $(CFLAGS) -c -o $@ $< obj/%.d: src/%.cpp $(CC) $(CFLAGS) -M -MF $@ -MT $(@:%.d=%.o) $< $(TARGET): $(OBJECTS) $(LD) $(LDFLAGS) -o $@ $(OBJECTS) .PHONY: clean clean: -rm -f $(OBJECTS) $(DEPFILES) $(RPOFILES) $(TARGET) -include $(DEPFILES) Now I'm at the point where I'm packaging this for a Debian system. I'm using debuild to build the Debian source package, and pbuilder to build the binary package. The debuild step only has to execute the clean target, but even this causes the dependency files to be generated and included. In short, my question is really: Can I somehow prevent make from generating dependencies when all I want is to run the clean target?
