  • OS choice between: Debian, gNewSense, and OpenSolaris

    - by penyuan
I am planning to migrate from Mac OS X and Windows to either a Unix or Linux distribution, i.e. I am a Linux/Unix beginner. Right now the following caught my interest: Debian: Well established with huge repository of 20000+ apps. gNewSence: "Totally free" version of Ubuntu, so it should be more beginner friendly? OpenSolaris: Also open-source, and built on "strong" Unix base. I do mainly basic tasks such as web browsing, office work, maintaining big photo collection, and a little bit of programming. Questions: How "free" are each of these distributions compared to each other, is this whole freedom thing a big deal? Will a binary labeled as for Ubuntu work on gNewSense? What are simple IDEs for Debian and gNewSense?

  • How to use WeirdX applet instead of X11 for remote connections in Mac OS X?

    - by penyuan
When I am away, I've got an Apple PowerBook set up to use X11 forwarding with SSH to connect to a remote iMac client in my room for server administration. Whenever I start X client programs on the client iMac, X11 would start on my PowerBook, which is OK, but... Question: Is it possible to change my settings so I can use the WeirdX (a web-based java X server) applet to take care of the X client programs instead of Mac OS X's default X11? Is there a config file I can edit to chance the $DISPLAY variable, and what should I set it to? Is this even the issue? Thank you very much.

  • Linux binary support under Mac OS X?

    - by penyuan
Is there a way to add Linux binary compatibility to Mac OS X 10.5+ such as that found in FreeBSD? For instance, and totally as an example, here is Arlequin 3.5, a population genetics software that my lab uses with a Linux binary: http://cmpg.unibe.ch/software/arlequin35/Arl35Downloads.html Thank you very much!

  • How to set up TightVNC Java viewer index.html on web server?

    - by penyuan
I've got the Java TightVNC viewer applet set up with the provided index.html on my Mac OS X 10.6.3 with web sharing enabled. Using a remote computer I was able to get to the webpage but I only see a white box with an X (for error?) that represents where the viewer is supposed to be. Any ideas on how to get this to work? I've tried to set the port (in index.html) to 5900 and 5901, none worked. Are any of these the default VNC port for Mac OS X 10.6.3? Also, I've activated Screen Sharing and Remote Login in System Preferences, allowing VNC viewers to connect. Here is the code for my index.html: <HTML> <TITLE> TightVNC desktop </TITLE> <APPLET CODE="classes/VncViewer.class" ARCHIVE="classes/VncViewer.jar" WIDTH="1440" HEIGHT="900"> <PARAM NAME="PORT" VALUE="5900"> <PARAM NAME="Scaling factor" VALUE="50"> </APPLET> <BR> <A href="http://www.tightvnc.com/">TightVNC site</A> </HTML> Again I can get to this page, but the applet doesn't seem to work, the Java console also doesn't say anything. Thanks in advance for your help!

  • How to set CPU affinity in Wine or CrossOver?

    - by penyuan
There are some old games who don't like the multicore processors in today's computers. I am wondering if there is a way to set the CPU affinity for them to '1' under Wine or CrossOver? i.e. In a native Windows environment you would right click on the game's process in the Task Manager then set the affinity there. I've came across a program called RunFirst.exe, but can't figure out a way to run it, then the game in one command. Suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

  • OpenDocument format plugin for Mac Office 2008?

    - by penyuan
Is there a plugin or script that lets Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac OS X open and save files in the OpenDocument ODF (.odt, .ods, .odp, etc.) format? I am thinking something like what you can do in Office 2007. I realise I could use an external converter, such as OpenOffice.org, just wondering if there is a more direct way. If such a plugin does not exist, would it be possible to manually make such a plugin? Such as via AppleScript (or anything else)? Thank you.

  • How to maximise performance in computers connected into LAN via Gigabit ethernet router?

    - by penyuan
Our group is setting up a server (which might just be a NAS, but we're not sure yet), which shares files, so that it connects to all other computers in the room (about 10 of them). I am thinking just hooking all of them up via a gigabit router/switch. Is there anything I should watch out for, in terms of cables, connections, or the connection capabilities of each computer in the network? For instance, I don't want a slow computer in the LAN to slow down everyone else's connection, etc., etc. Thanks for the education.

  • How to trim/cut clips with VLC

    - by penyuan
I am running VLC 1.1.5 64-bit on Mac OS X 10.6.6. On the web I found instructions saying I should click on Video-Advanced Controls in the menu bar to reveal options that let me trim and cut video clips. However, there is no such option in my copy of VLC. What I want to do is cut a ~2 minute portion from the middle of a two hour footage (in MXF format that QuickTime can't open) that I've got. Is there another way to trim and cut clips of videos in VLC? Or should I use other (preferably free, Free, and open source) software? Thanks.

  • What specs to consider when buying SSD?

    - by penyuan
When I bought "traditional" hard drives, I have been told to consider specs like RPM (5400, 7200, etc.), buffer size (16MB, 32MB etc.), and interface (IDE, SATA, etc.). (did I miss something?) What about solid state drives (SSD)? What are some important specs to consider in terms of performance and reliability? By the way, are SSDs just as reliable as traditional hard drives now? A couple years ago I heard they're not, but that's a "long time" ago now. Thanks for your answer.

  • How to specify which GCC for MacPorts to use?

    - by penyuan
I compiled GCC 4.4.3 and installed it in /usr/local/bin, but whenever I install a port via MacPorts 1.8.2 the verbose output says MacPorts is using /usr/bin/gcc-4.2: checking for gcc... /usr/bin/gcc-4.2 How do I make MacPorts find my own GCC 4.4.3? Here is my existing path: /opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/lib:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin Thank you! P.S. I am running Mac OS X 10.6.2 Snow Leopard.

  • Encrypted TrueCrypt volume in file with decoy content?

    - by penyuan
I've been reading about the encryption features of TrueCrypt, including the feature to have an encrypted volume inside a file with any name. For example, I can create an encrypted volume inside a file named music.mp3. However, the file won't really play when I try to open it in a music player. Is there a way to add "decoy" content to music.mp3 so that someone who doesn't know its got encrypted content can double click on it and music will play? Obviously it doesn't have to be music, but also images, decoy test document, etc. etc.

  • Emacs 23.1 make error 139 in Mac OS X 10.6.3

    - by penyuan
    When I try to compile GNU Emacs 23.1 on my machine with Mac OS X 10.6.3 I repeatedly get the following ending: Directories: /src/emacs-23.1/lisp/. /src/emacs-23.1/lisp/./calc /src/emacs-23.1/lisp/./calendar /src/emacs-23.1/lisp/./emacs-lisp /src/emacs-23.1/lisp/./emulation /src/emacs-23.1/lisp/./erc /src/emacs-23.1/lisp/./eshell /src/emacs-23.1/lisp/./gnus /src/emacs-23.1/lisp/./international /src/emacs-23.1/lisp/./language /src/emacs-23.1/lisp/./mail /src/emacs-23.1/lisp/./mh-e /src/emacs-23.1/lisp/./net /src/emacs-23.1/lisp/./nxml /src/emacs-23.1/lisp/./org /src/emacs-23.1/lisp/./play /src/emacs-23.1/lisp/./progmodes /src/emacs-23.1/lisp/./textmodes /src/emacs-23.1/lisp/./url /bin/sh: line 1: 69491 Segmentation fault EMACSLOADPATH=/src/emacs-23.1/lisp LC_ALL=C ../src/bootstrap-emacs -batch --no-site-file --multibyte -l autoload --eval '(setq generated-autoload-file "/src/emacs-23.1/lisp/loaddefs.el")' -f batch-update-autoloads $wins make[2]: *** [autoloads] Error 139 make[1]: *** [/src/emacs-23.1/src/../lisp/loaddefs.el] Error 2 make: *** [src] Error 2 Does anyone know what this means and what I could do to resolve the issue? By the way, here is my ./configure settings: ./configure --prefix=/usr/local --x-includes=/usr/X11/include --x-libraries=/usr/X11/lib --with-x I've tried to compile both with and without X with no success.

  • Standard way of distributing source code?

    - by penyuan
I am relatively new to programming, and have built a few working C++ commandline programs with Xcode in Mac OS X (no dependencies on Mac-only libraries or APIs). My question is: What is the standard way of packaging and distributing the source code (and possibly compiled binaries)? i.e. Almost all Linux programs seemed to be distributed that a user simply needs to run ./configure && make && make install from the source directory. Thank you.
