  • Do we need a non-disclosure agreement (NDA)?

    We're going to meet a potential new client today and between ourselves started discussing the need for a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) and whether we need one at this juncture. In this case we don't think we'll be talking about technical specifics as it's an initial meeting about who we are. Is there any precedent on when is the right time for small ISVs to insist on NDAs and when perhaps the insistence might appear over the top and precious. All ideas welcomed, though in our case we're interested in UK law.

  • Should I be wary of signing a non-disclosure agreement with someone I just met?

    tl;dr: Some guy I just met says he wants me to join his company. Before he shows me what they do, he wants me to sign a non-disclosure agreement. Is this weird? I'm traveling right now. Someone who saw me coding seemed to think I was smart or something and started talking with me. He explained that he owns a software company, told me a bit about what it does and told me that he was looking for a programmer who would work for a stake in the company. He explained that the company's product is being developed rather secretly, so he couldn't tell me much. But he did tell enough about the product to convince me that he's not completely making this up, which is a decent baseline. He suggested that he show me more of what he's been working on and, after seeing that, I decide whether I want to join. Because of the secrecy behind the product, he wants me to sign a non-disclosure agreement before we talk. I'm obviously somewhat skeptical because of the random nature by which we met. In the short term, I'm wondering if I should be wary of signing such an agreement. He said it would be easier to show me the product in person rather than over the internet, and I'm leaving town tomorrow, so I'd have to figure this out by tomorrow. If I decide to talk with him, I could decide later whether I trust that it's worth spending any time on this company. The concept of being able to avoid telling a secret seems strange to me for the same reason that things like certain aspects of copyright seem strange. Should I be wary of signing a non-disclosure agreement? Is this common practice? I don't know the details of the agreement of which he was thinking, (If I end up meeting with him, I'll of course read over the agreement before I decide whether to sign it.) so I could consider alternatives according to the aspects of the agreement. Or I could just consider the case of an especially harsh agreement. This question seems vaguely related. Do we need a non-disclosure agreement (NDA)? Thanks

  • Jawa Swing: Dialog with expanding / progressive disclosure?

    I've got a dialog in a desktop Java Swing app. What I want is a classic Windows-style Progressive Disclosure dialog, where pressing a "More Options" button opens up a whole extra batch of options on the dialog. (Which can then be hidden again by clicking that same button, which now says something like "Hide".) What's the right way to do this in Swing? I can't seem to google-up anything directly relating to this, and what I have found boils down to "reset the preferred dimensions to 0 and revalidate" which can't possibly be the right way to do this and also causes all kinds of wacky things to happen.

    I'm a completely n00b when talking about audio. I'm using Matt Gallagher's audio streamer on my radio app. How may I use progressive download? Also, ExtAudioFile is a good idea too :) Edit: Used this: length = CFReadStreamRead(stream, bytes, kAQDefaultBufSize); if(!data) data =[[NSMutableData alloc] initWithLength:0]; [data appendData:[NSData dataWithBytes:bytes length:kAQDefaultBufSize]]; Now I can save the audio data using writeToFile:atomically: NSData method, but the audio won't play. Also, if I try to load it on a AVAudioPlayer, I get an error.

    Hi! Im trying to implement a progressive download audio player for the iphone, ie using http and fixed size mp3-files. I found the AudioStreamer project but it seems very complicated and works best with endless streams. I need to be able to find out the total length of audiofiles and I also need to be able to seek in the files.   • Progressive Enhancement vs. Single Page Apps

    I just got back from a conference in Boston called An Event Apart. A really popular theme amongst the speakers was the idea of progressive enhancement - a site's content should go in the HTML, and JavaScript should only be used to enhance behavior. The arguments that the speakers gave for progressive enhancement were very compelling. Not only is it a solid pattern for supporting older browsers, and devices on a network with low bandwidth, but HTML fails much more gracefully than JavaScript (i.e. markup that is not supported is just ignored, while if a browser throws an exception while executing your script - you are hosed). Jeremy Keith gave a particularly insightful talk about this. But what about single page web apps like Backbone and Angular? The whole design behind these frameworks seems to push the developer toward moving content out of the HTML, and into something like a JSON API. I can not seem to gel these two design patterns: progressive enhancement vs. single page web apps. Are there instances when one is better than the other? Or are they not even antagonistic technologies, and I am missing something here with my mental model?

  • CoffeeScript - inability to support progressive adoption

    First if, what is CoffeeScript?Web definitionsCoffeeScript is a programming language that compiles statement-by-statement to JavaScript. The language adds syntactic sugar inspired by Ruby and Python to enhance JavaScript's brevity and readability, as well as adding more sophisticated features like array comprehension and pattern matching.The issue with CoffeeScript is that it eliminates any progressive adoption. It is a purist approach, kind of like the Amish, if you're not borne Amish, tough luck. So for folks with thousands of lines of JavaScript code will have a tough time to convert it to CoffeeScript. You can use the js2coffee API to convert the JavaScript file to CoffeeScript but in my experience that had trouble converting the files. It would convert the file to CoffeeScript without any complaints, but then when trying to generate the CoffeeScript file got errors with guess what: INDENTATION!Tried to convince the CoffeeScript community on github but got lots of push-back to progressive adoption with comments like "stupid", "crap", "child's comportment", "it's like Ruby, Python", "legacy code" etc. As a matter of interest one of the first comments were that the code needs to be re-designed before converted to CoffeeScript. Well I rest my case then :-)So far the community on github has been very reluctant to even consider introducing some way to define code-blocks, obviously curly braces is not an option as they use it for json object definitions. They also have no consideration for a progressive adoption where some, if not all, JavaScript syntax will be allowed which means all of us in the real world that have thousands of lines of JavaScript will have a real issue converting it over. Worst, I for one lack the confidence that tools like js2coffee will provide the correct indentation that will determine the flow of control in your code!!! Actually it is hard for me to find enough justification for using spaces or tabs to control the flow of code. It is no wonder that C#, C, C++, Java, all enterprise-scale frameworks still use curly braces. Have never seen an enterprise app built with Ruby or PhP.Let me know what your concerns are with CoffeeScript and how you dealt with large scale JavaScript conversions to CoffeeScript.

  • Progressive Enhancement with box-shadow

    I would like to use WebKit's box-shadow css property for a little drop-down. The code would look like: .drop_down{ -webkit-box-shadow: 1px 1px 4px #888; box-shadow: 1px 1px 4px #888; } However, for browsers that do not have this capability, I would like to use borders to approximate this drop shadow, like so: .drop_down{ border-top: 1px solid #bbb; border-left: 1px solid #bbb; border-right: 2px solid #bbb; border-bottom: 2px solid #bbb; } The problem is, I don't want the border-based shadow to show up for the browsers that DO support box-shadow. I would like to avoid browser sniffing because I assume it's hard to cover all the cases. What is the simplest way to do this? I prefer a javascript-less solution, but I will consider simple javascript-based ones too.

  • Progressive MP4 video issues in Flash- Video stops rendering

    I'm currently working on a flash project that has an intro video that plays before heading into the main app. This video is an H.264 .mp4, 1550x540, and around 10MB. The problem thats currently driving me insane is that when I test it, occasionally the video will begin playing, and then suddenly stop rendering the video frames, leaving the audio playing in the background with nothing on screen. Once the file is played through fully (based on listening to the audio), my playback complete event fires like it should, but I can't find any info of people having similar issues.   • How to change disclosure style when user enters in edit mode of a UITableView?

    Hello, guys. I have a UITableView that in 'normal' mode, show a UITableViewCellAccessoryDisclosureIndicator meaning if the user taps the row, another list is showed, like HIG says: "Disclosure indicator. When this element is present, users know they can tap anywhere in the row to see the next level in the hierarchy or the choices associated with the list item. Use a disclosure indicator in a row when selecting the row results in the display of another list. Don’t use a disclosure indicator to reveal detailed information about the list item; instead, use a detail disclosure button for this purpose." When the user tap the edit button in the top bar of the UITableView, I think I have to change the disclosure because if the user tap it, a view for changing the information of the current row is showed (see the bold line above), again, like HIG says: "Detail disclosure button. Users tap this element to see detailed information about the list item. (Note that you can use this element in views other than table views, to reveal additional details about something; see “Detail Disclosure Buttons” for more information.) In a table view, use a detail disclosure button in a row to display details about the list item. Note that the detail disclosure button, unlike the disclosure indicator, can perform an action that is separate from the selection of the row. For example, in Phone Favorites, tapping the row initiates a call to the contact; tapping the detail disclosure button in the row reveals more information about the contact." Have I miss understood the HIG, or I really do have to change the disclosure style in edit mode of UITableView? If yes, how I can intercept the edit mode when the user taps the Edit button?   • Setting up page goals in Analytics when using progressive enhancement to load content using jquery .load

    I'm using jQuery .load to load content in from other pages into my homepage, so that Google can still see whats going on I've made the <a> tags go to the pages but over ride them in the JavaScript so instead of going the that page it just loads in the content from that page to the main page. Normaly I would just make the page /contact.html a goal. Can I still get it to work as a goal if the content is being loaded in? Can I do something like when the user clicks <a href="contact.html" id="load-contact">contact</a> it logs the clicking of the <a> tag as a goal, rather than the actaul page being visited?

    A PCI compliance scan, on a CentOS LAMP server fails with this message. The server header and ServerSignature don't expose the Apache version. Apache httpOnly Cookie Information Disclosure CVE-2012-0053 Can this be resolved by simply specifying a custom ErrorDocument for the 400 Bad Request response? How is the scanner determining this vulnerability, is it invoking a bad request then looking to see if it's the default Apache 400 response?

  • setting target for disclosure button on subclassed UITableViewCell

    I've created a subclass of UITableViewCell to create some custom appearance and UI functionality ('swipe to reveal delete button'). Some of the cells are disclosure/detail disclosure type, and have a UIButtonTypeDetailDisclosure etc added manually. I cannot use the table view controllers' UITableViewCellAccessory for row at index path method. The question is, how do I set the target of these manually added buttons so that they correctly send the didSelectRowAtIndexPath to their table view controller?
