• Good Book for Learning Meteor: Discover Meteor

  A week or so ago, Sacha Greif asked me whether I would be willing to write a review of his new book on Meteor (published today) entitled Discover Meteor. Sacha wrote the book with Tom Coleman. Both Sacha and Tom are very active in the Meteor community – they are responsible for several well-known Meteor packages and projects including Atmosphere, Meteorite, meteor-router and Telescope — so I suspected that their book would be good. If you have not heard of Meteor, Meteor is a new framework for building web applications which is built on top of Node.js. Meteor excels at building a new category of constantly-connected, real-time web applications. It has some jaw-dropping features which I described in a previous blog entry: http://stephenwalther.com/archive/2013/03/18/an-introduction-to-meteor.aspx So, I am super excited about Meteor. Unfortunately, because it is evolving so quickly, learning how to write Meteor applications can be challenging. The official documentation at Meteor.com is good, but it is too basic. I’m happy to report that Discovering Meteor is a really good book: · The book is a fun read. The writing is smooth and I read through the book from cover to cover in a single Saturday afternoon with pleasure. · The book is well organized. It contains a walk-through of building a social media app (Microscope). Interleaved through the app building chapters, it contains tutorial chapters on Meteor features such as deployment and reactivity. · The book covers several advanced topics which I have not seen covered anywhere else. The chapters on publications and subscriptions, routing, and animation are especially good. I came away from the book with a deeper understanding of all of these topics. • Problem with loading compiled c code in R x64 using dyn.load

  I recently went from a 32bit laptop to a 64bit desktop (both win7). I just found out that I get an error now when loading dll's using dyn.load. I guess this is a simple mistake and I am overlooking something. For example, I write this simple c function (foo.c): void foo( int *x) {*x = *x + 1;} Then compile it in command prompt: R CMD SHLIB foo.c Then in 32bit R I can use it in R: > setwd("R") > dyn.load("foo.dll") > .C("foo",as.integer(1)) [[1]] [1] 2 but in 64bit R I get: > dyn.load("foo.dll") Error in inDL(x, as.logical(local), as.logical(now), ...) : unable to load shared object 'C:/Users/Sacha/Documents/R/foo.dll': LoadLibrary failure: %1 is not a valid Win32 application. nd.

• Ubuntu 12.04 (dual boot with Windows 7), doesn't boot after I deleted some files from Windows. What can I do?

  The Ubuntu 12.04 I have installed (in Dual-Boot with Windows 7) using WUBI worked perfectly for over a month. Then it informed me that I ran out of space on the hard drive and I assumed it was because my hard drive on Windows was full. I logged into Windows and deleted the whole New Volume D. But now the problem is that it is not possible to log into Ubuntu but in Windows it's possible. I really paid attention about not deleting important files in Windows. When i try to log into Ubuntu : _either it does not go far and i have to restart the computer _or it goes until the loading time and a message says something like "[...] Graphics could not be detected [...]" and they ask to choose between 4 options including "Start with poor Graphics", "Reconfigure Graphics", "Troubleshoot" and "Restart the computer". But none of the options run and i also have to restart the computer manually from that point I have plenty of useful files in Ubuntu so i want to find another way to solve the problem instead of Uninstall/Reinstall Ubuntu. I want to know what happened ? And how to make it work ?

• Formula to search for a value in a range of cells

  I have a spreadsheet with several cells in one column. Each cell has identical conditional formatting: In 1 cell value equal to ='Y' In 2 cell value equal to ='N' In 3 cell value equal to ='?' What I would like to achieve is, if all 7 cells contain "Y" as the option then a separate cell will display "Yes", but if any of the cells contain "N" as the selection then the separate cell will display "NO". How can I achieve this?

• Security Issue in LinkedIn – View any 3rd profile without a premium account.

On opening the contact on my desktop, I was surprised to see, I need to upgrade my account to view the contact. Doing some research along with my wife, I found this simple security vulnerability from LinkedIn that can let anyone view a contact’s full profile even when you have a “not upgraded” LinkedIn account and that the contact is a “3rd + Everyone Else”. Here’s an example of what I am talking about. I just made a random search on LinkedIn for a contact whose name starts with Sacha. Do note, this is just a walkthrough and I am not publicizing any Sacha. I check the “3rd + Everyone Else” and find a “LinkedIn Member”. On clicking this person’s profile to view, I am presented with the following page, asking me to upgrade. Make a note of this page’s web address and you get the profile id from it. For example, for this contact, the page address is: http://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=868XXX35 The Profile Id for this contact is 868XXX35. Now, open following page where the Profile Id is the same as the one we grabbed a moment earlier. https://touch.www.linkedin.com/?#profile/868XXX35 The mobile page exposes this contact information and you even get the possibility to connect to this person without an introduction mail (InMail). I hope someone from LinkedIn sees and issues a fix for this. I am pretty sure, it’s something that they don’t want the user to do without purchasing an upgrade package.

• How to identify multiple identical pairs in two vectors

  In my graph-package (as in graph theory, nodes connected by edges) I have a vector indicating for each edge the node of origin from, a vector indicating for each edge the node of destination to and a vector indicating the curve of each edge curve. By default I want edges to have a curve of 0 if there is only one edge between two nodes and curve of 0.2 if there are two edges between two nodes. The code that I use now is a for-loop, and it is kinda slow: curve <- rep(0,5) from<-c(1,2,3,3,2) to<-c(2,3,4,2,1) for (i in 1:length(from)) { if (any(from==to[i] & to==from[i])) { curve[i]=0.2 } } So basically I look for each edge (one index in from and one in to) if there is any other pair in from and to that use the same nodes (numbers). What I am looking for are two things: A way to identify if there is any pair of nodes that have two edges between them (so I can omit the loop if not) A way to speed up this loop # EDIT: To make this abit clearer, another example: from <- c(4L, 6L, 7L, 8L, 1L, 9L, 5L, 1L, 2L, 1L, 10L, 2L, 6L, 7L, 10L, 4L, 9L) to <- c(1L, 1L, 1L, 2L, 3L, 3L, 4L, 5L, 6L, 7L, 7L, 8L, 8L, 8L, 8L, 10L, 10L) cbind(from,to) from to [1,] 4 1 [2,] 6 1 [3,] 7 1 [4,] 8 2 [5,] 1 3 [6,] 9 3 [7,] 5 4 [8,] 1 5 [9,] 2 6 [10,] 1 7 [11,] 10 7 [12,] 2 8 [13,] 6 8 [14,] 7 8 [15,] 10 8 [16,] 4 10 [17,] 9 10 In these two vectors, pair 3 is identical to pair 10 (both 1 and 7 in different orders) and pairs 4 and 12 are identical (both 2 and 8). • How to dock an application in the Windows desktop?

  I would like to develop a small notifications application for Windows in .NET that docks on the right/left side of the screen (not consuming more than 300px), should always be visible and force the rest of windows to not overlap this application (something like the old Office taskbar or Vista's Sidebar). I have no idea where to start. Can it be done using XAML/WPF? Since I haven't even started coding any option is valid at this point. Thanks!

Silverlight 4 – Toolkit and Theming Ryan Alford also had a problem adding a theme from the Toolkit, and what all you might have to do to get around this one.... Part 4 of 4 : Tips/Tricks for Silverlight Developers. Michael Crump has part 4 of his series on Silverlight Development tips and tricks.   Hello, I am just studying the code of Sacha Barbers MVVM framework Chinch and I saw this in the xxxViewModel.cs file: DataService.FetchAllOrders(CurrentCustomer.CustomerId.DataValue); DataService is a Static class. Being a junior dev I am only used to Interfaces with Data services. Why is that class static? Or do you think he made it just for the example? So is that a good approach?

This list is converted to a List<OrderModel> or in other words List<OrderViewModel>. How can that happen? What must be the requirements/conditions, that every property of the Order object in the List<Order> is converted into a property of the OrderModel ?
