• How do I let programmers know something useful?

  Quite often I go through pain to discover how to do something useful, in this case how to get PHP running on Google App Engine without the 'resin.jar too big' problem, but I have nowhere to let people know. In this particular case, the web answers were incomplete, outdated or plain wrong. I could create a blog, but it's overkill. I just want let programmers know a quick solution/approach. I'm not sure it's the done thing to ask a question and then answer it. In short, it'd be nice to be able to just dump a sort of combined question/answer/snippet, then let others comment as usual, shoot it down, like it, whatever. How do the rest of you approach this? • Solarwinds SDK/customisation

  Hi, Sorry if this is the wrong place to post, but it is a hybrid serverfault/stackoverflow question. I've been directed to take a look at Solarwinds, which is an excellent network monitoring solution, for an internal project. Basically we want to write our own panel to display information custom to our network infrastructure. Has anyone done anything like this, or know if there is a plugin SDK giving developer access? • How can I setup my local Nginx server so I can edit the files?

  I have my local development machine running Arch Linux, Nginx, PHP-FPM and MySQL. In order for the websites I am working on to run the files need to be owned by the http user. The files are currently located in folders like this: /srv/http/site1/ /srv/http/site2/ When I use the following chown command on the http folder the sites work fine, but I cannot edit the files with my user: chown -R http.users /srv/http When I do this the sites do not work, but I can edit the files: chown -R shane.http /srv/http How can I make it so that my user can edit the files, and the web server can run them at the same time? • Apple Core Foundation license

  Hi all, A short but sweet question: Can I use Apple's open source Core Foundation (CF classes) in a commercial product for free? That is, can I compile and link against the libraries without open sourcing my own applications's code? Obviously if I alter the original CF code, I would submit the changes. • Quick top level server language question.

  Right, so if you have to decide on a server-side language for a distributed Linux-based server backend, would you choose: PHP Mono ASP.net Java As a C++ programmer, I'm thinking Java+Tomcat, but I'd love to hear experienced thoughts here, especially relating to debugging and IDE (likely Eclipse). • Why is vCenter 5.1u1 exiting hosts from maintenance mode?

  This vCenter server was just upgraded to 5.1 update 1. I'm going through hosts and bringing firmware up to date, then upgrading them from various versions of 5.0 to 5.1u1. vCenter 5.1u1 seems to have an interesting new behavior: it's removing hosts from maintenance mode when they reconnect after being disconnected -- but very inconsistently, I've seen it maybe 4 or 5 times on ~25-30 host reboots. I've only seen it happen on 5.0 hosts that have not yet been upgraded to 5.1. In the image, I placed the host in maint mode and rebooted it into the HP SPP DVD's automatic update mode. After its usual ~40 minute update process, the host came back online.. and 7 seconds before even logging that the host had reconnected, vCenter had sent the host a task to exit maintenance mode. In my understanding, the only time vCenter should drop a host out of maintenance mode is when vCenter put it into maintenance mode itself (such as a VUM upgrade task). Why would this vCenter be unilaterally exiting a host from user-initiated maintenance mode? Edit, additional info: I ran the firmware upgrades on 5 more hosts, all at the same time. Two of them exited maint mode after reconnecting, three did not. The common factor of those exiting maint mode seems to be how long they were offline; the two that took a few tries to boot to the virtual media are the two that got knocked out of maint mode. esx31 (image above): 45 minutes unresponsive esx19 (exited maint): 87 minutes unresponsive esx24 (stayed in maint): 32 minutes unresponsive esx29 (stayed in maint): 39 minutes unresponsive esx32 (stayed in maint): 30 minutes unresponsive esx34 (exited maint): 70 minutes unresponsive Edit: The disconnect time idea seems to have been a red herring, as it's not happening consistently. Additionally, in the vpxd.log the exit maint mode task initiation seems to always immediately follow this vim.EnvironmentBrowser.queryProvisioningPolicy SOAP call. Here's the lines, slightly trimmed for clarity: 15:27:49.535 [info 'vpxdvpxdVmomi'] [ClientAdapterBase::InvokeOnSoap] Invoke done (esx31, vim.EnvironmentBrowser.queryProvisioningPolicy) 15:27:49.560 [info 'commonvpxLro'] [VpxLRO] -- BEGIN task -- esx31 -- HostSystem.exitMaintenanceMode -- Note that on the nodes that don't get the exit task, the vim.EnvironmentBrowser.queryProvisioningPolicy event still occurs. I'm not seeing any other differences in events before or after this in the reconnect process, aside from the extra events caused by exiting maintenance mode. Given the log's mention of provisioning policies, looking for autodeploy-related maintenance mode issues turns up complaints about similar behavior (though I'm not using autodeploy at all).

• Using radvd to advertise ipv6 over VPN connection using DD-wrt

  My ultimate goal is to allow VPN users to have access to my internal IPv6 network from across the intertubes. I've got a linksys WRT54GSv2 running DD-WRTv24SP1 and have configured the little guy as specified here http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/IPv6 and it works wonderfully over the br0 interface (LAN/WLAN bridge). Here's the issue though, when I add an additional interface to the radvd config file on the router (specifically ppp0, for the VPN traffic), radvd refuses to start. The kicker is that on DDWRT, it doesn't give an error message, it just fails outright. • Is it possible to restrict fileserver access to domain users using computers that are members of the domain?

  It seems domain isolation can be used to accomplish, but I'd like a solution that doesn't require IPsec, or more accurately, doesn't require IPsec on the fileserver. IPsec if done in software has a large CPU overhead and our NAS boxes don't support any kind of offload. The goal is to avoid authenticated users using non-managed machines to access network resources. Network Access Protection (NAP) and the various enforcement points looked promsiing but I couldn't find a bulletproof way to use them [which doesn't require IPsec on the fileserver]. I was thinking when a domain user accesses the NAS box it will first need a Kerberos ticket from AD, so if AD could somehow verify the computer that was requesting the ticket was in the domain I'd have a solution.

• Monitoring the wall time of a process on windows?

  Windows Task Manager has the ability to show the current CPU time of any given running process on windows, is there any way (not necessarily through Task Manager) to get the current wall time of a process? An example, let's say I have a script that reliably runs for about 45 minutes. Without adding a progress bar to the script, is there any way to figure out for how long it has been running? The math behind this seems pretty straight forward; WallTime = CurrentWallTime - WallTimeProcessStarted. Likewise, since the math is so simple, is there anyway to get the time that a process was started at?

• Can I upgrade Xcode to support a newer version of GCC to learn C++0x?

  I would like to jump in learn C++0x, which has matured to a level I'm happy with. Xcode on Snow Leopard 10.6 is currently at GCC 4.2.1, and the new features I'd like to try, like std::shared_ptr, lambdas, auto, null pointer constant, unicode string literals, and other bits and pieces, require at least 4.3 (I believe). Ideally I'd use Xcode but I'm not even sure if you can manually upgrade the compiler for Xcode. Is this possible? Otherwise, what is the best way to install a different version of GCC that doesn't interfere with the rest of the system? Regards, Shane

• text extraction from video game dialogue files [on hold]

  As part of an academic project, I am trying to access the dialogue files (whether audio or text) from a variety of sports video games (Madden or NBA 2kX would be fantastic). I have searched extensively on other sites (scholarly text-mining publications, r/gaming, r/madden, modding sites, etc.) for guidance in how to extract dialogue files, but have been unsuccessful. Given that I don't have even the domain specific language to ask the right question (i.e. the resources I am seeking are out there, I just can't find them) I am asking the SE game dev community for help with the 2 following questions: Is there a canonical resource that I should study that would get me started with how to extract text or audio files from games? I am very fluent in python, which usually excels at mining information from sources, but I struggle with knowing where to start with a video game (as opposed to a more familiar database with a defined API). Is this even feasible, or are protections included with newer games (e.g. NBA 2k13) going to make extraction of these resources in a programmatic way impossible? Thank you for your help!

• Login screen restarts while entering password

  I am having a problem that only occurred after installing the fglrx proprietary driver through the additional drivers app. The exact same issue is described in this question, however it's closed. Must login twice before entering Unity; first login screen has graphical anomalies When I boot up my computer, once I get to lightdm login screen I will start typing my password, and upon the entering of two of my password characters "n2" the screen will start displaying some corruption in the very top edge of the screen, then after I hit the number 2, lightdm seems to crash and it will restart and everything is fine, I can login from that point. So the issue is, every time I reboot, I have to login once, allow lightdm to crash and restart, then login as normal. The issue did not occur prior to installing fglrx, and has happened through several reinstalls.

  Oracle released Agile PLM 9.3 SP2 on June 14 and the Agile installer for AutoVue 20 for Agile PLM on April 30. Also available are the new versions of AUT and Averify - 1.6.3 for both tools. 9.3 SP2 is a combined English and NLS release for use on any version of 9.3.0. SP2 contains many bug fixes and rolls up several Hot Fixes - please review the Readme for all the details. In addition, this release also addresses some scalability issues when working with very large Exports and Reports. When exporting very large BOMs, the export module will now release objects more efficiently to reduce the amount of memory consumed on the Application Server. Adminstrators can also control the maximum row limits for Users verses system processes, like ACS. Several out of the box BOM reports have also been changed to use a new row limit option. The combination of all these changes will provide more stability on the application server for customers managing very large datasets. 9.3 SP2 also adds support for Oracle Database 11gR2 for Windows, Oracle Internet Directory (OID) and Oracle Access Manager (OAM). Please note that currently the Variant Patch is not intended to be released for SP2. Customers running the Variant Patch should remain on 9.3.0.0 or 9.3.0.1. Back in April, we also released the AutoVue 20 for Agile PLM installer. AutoVue 20 has many new features which will help Agile PLM customers. Large multi-page Word documents and 2D CAD documents will open more quickly to the first page or first rendition. Memory usage is less when working with 3D Models. There are many new formats supported for MCAD, 2D Cad, and EDA. AutoVue 20 is immediately available for Windows and Linux platforms. • Drupal to Wordpress migration scope for SEO

  I'm not sure if this is the appropriate forum, please let me know if it's not (or if there is a better one) and I'll withdraw the question. I'm migrating a drupal site to wordpress and I was wondering what the concerns are with respect to preserving google rank, etc. while assuming the page content is somewhat similar. I've set up 301 redirects, and created a new site map, but the surrounding html / menus, etc are different. Is this considered a concern and are there a best practice for this kind of migration?

• Why does waking from hibernate take nearly ten minutes on 11.10?

  Im running 11.10 64bit on a Dell XPS 15 L502x laptop. It uses an i5 proc and has 16Gb ram. Whenever I close the lid on the laptop I have it set to hibernate as I want to continue whatever I was previously running. Generally that is simple text editing, so my mem usage would normally be only a Gb or 2. When I open the lid and it resumes from Hibernation, it takes up to ten minutes to do so. Extremely frustrating. Is there anything I can do to make hibernate function properly. On windows it used to wake from Hibernation in less than 30 seconds. Its really frustrating and souring my experience with Ubuntu. Any help would be gratefully appreciated! Thanks guys/gals! S

• Installing Windows 8 over 12.04, but getting "error: unknown filesystem"

  I have had bad experiences with 12.04 on my laptop, too many things just dont work so am wiping it and replacing with Windows 8 release preview to get it running again. Anyway, I installed normally, deleted partitions and formatted and installed windows fine, but now there is an error coming up when it boots: error: unknown filesystem grub rescue Ive tried repairing from Windows 8 disk, doing FixMbr and FixBoot but hasnt worked, neither has reinstalling. Any ideas how to get rid of this?

• Allow access to WordPress site only by links in email newsletters

  I send out a personal email newsletter, and have been looking into sending it via some service like MailChimp, or sendy.co. Many of these email services suggest, or require, the email newsletter content to be available online, in case the recipient's email app doesn't render it properly, or at all. The thing is I don't want my newsletter contents visible to the whole world. Nor do I want to require existing recipients to make accounts/be assigned accounts, with passwords. So, the question is: How can my WordPress site content be viewable only by clicking on the link to it in the email newsletter. It can't be found in a Google search; but once at the site the visitor can view previous newsletter contents. It seems an .htaccess file would do the trick, but I have been unable to figure out the syntax for this. Thanks for your help. I have copied below two other questions, and answers, which have helped me word my question clearly. Similar to this request about allowing access to a certain group while still restricting access to the world: Is there a way to password protect directory only in cpanel. But the user should not be prompted the password, when they try to access it via web? • Recover files from a SATA drive from USB

  I've damaged the drive I had in my windows laptop and now I want to try to recover as many files as possible. I know very little about linux though. I have Ubuntu 10.04. I have a docking station for the drive and it is connected to my linux machine. The drive appears in disk utility. Unfortunately, this is where I have no idea where to proceed. Any help is appreciated and I can provide more info if needed.

• How to Align Gun with Bullets

  I have a top-down 2D shooter. I have an image of a player holding a gun, that rotates to face the mouse. Please note that the gun isn't a separate image tethered to the player, but rather part of the player. Right now, bullets are created at the player's x and y. This works when the player is facing the right way, but not when they rotate. The bullets move in the right direction, but don't come from the gun. How can I fix this? • Everything has an Interface [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Do I need to use an interface when only one class will ever implement it? I am taking over a project where every single real class is implementing an Interface. The vast majority of these interfaces are implemented by a single class that share a similar name and the exact same methods (ex: MyCar and MyCarImpl). Almost no 2 classes in the project implement more than the interface that shares its name. I know the general recommendation is to code to an interface rather than an implementation, but isn't this taking it a bit too far? The system might be more flexible in that it is easier to add a new class that behaves very much like an existing class. However, it is significantly harder to parse through the code and method changes now require 2 edits instead of 1. Personally, I normally only create interfaces when there is a need for multiple classes to have the same behavior. I subscribe to YAGNI, so I don't create something unless I see a real need for it. Am I doing it all wrong or is this project going way overboard?
