  • What are the icons contained in the Windows 7 shell32.dll

    - by ahsteele
I wanted to change the icon used for a Custom Library I've created in Windows 7. I found a great article How to Customize the Library Icons in Windows 7 which describes exactly how to do that. However, the article uses shell32.dll and a icon location to do so. I have found an image map detailing the icons location in shell32.dll in Windows XP but was wondering if anyone knew of something similar for Windows 7.

  • How to check when Shell32.Folder.CopyHere() is finished

    - by Jelle Capenberghs
I need to unzip en zip some files in my application using Shell32. Right now, I use srcFolder.CopyHere(destFolder.Items()) to achieve this. However, my next line of code requires the newly made ZIP-file. But since the CopyHere method is Async, how can I check when it in finished? Right now I use a Thread.Sleep for around 500 ms which is enough for my computer to finish creating the ZIP file, but it's not good code imo. Any ideas? More info/code can be provided if necessary.

  • Why do i get E_ACCESSDENIED when reading public shortcuts through Shell32?

    - by corvuscorax
I'm trying to read the targets of all desktop shortcuts in a C# 4 application. The shortcuts on a windows desktop can come from more that one location, depending on whether the shortcut is created for all users or just the current user. In this specific case I'm trying to read a shortcut from the public desktop, e.g. from C:\Users\Public\Desktop\shortcut.lnk. The code is like this (path is a string contaning the path to the lnk file): var shell = new Shell32.ShellClass(); var folder = shell.NameSpace(Path.GetDirectoryName(path)); var folderItem = folder.ParseName(Path.GetFileName(path)); if (folderItem != null) { var link = (Shell32.ShellLinkObject)folderItem.GetLink; The last line throws an System.UnauthorizedAccessException, indicating that it's not allowed to read the shortcut file's contents. I have tried on shortcut files on the user's private desktop (c:\Users\username\Desktop) and that works fine. So, my questions are: (1) why is my application not allowed to /read/ the shortcut from code, when I can clearly read the contents as a user? (2) is there a way to get around this? Maybe using a special manifest file for the application? And, by the way, my OS is Windows 7, 64-bit. be well -h-

  • Using Shell32 to extract Mimes on Windows Server 2008

    - by Léon Pelletier
In a desktop app, I'm using Shell32 to extract Mime infos and ID3 tags. I want to do the same in ASP.Net on server side with http posted files, plus fetch some other infos, but as a Windows Server 2008, there are not several media applications installed, so I wonder if it will still retrieve a lot of informations from the files. Will it be possible to do it from server side? If yes, will it fetch several Mimes without media app installed. If not, is there some Mime pack to get some file informations without the app being installed. [EDIT] I installed VLC player and Windows Media Player on the server, which provide all MP3s / movies infos (Duration, Artist, Album, Width, Height, etc.), but I don't know if this is a good practice.

  • ILClone on Windows 2000

    - by 00010000
Does anyone know of any issues with the ILClone() function on Windows 2000? Is it fully supported? MSDN says it runs on Windows 2000 but I have a user reporting that my program will not run on Windows 2000 because of that function. EDIT: I was able to get a hold of a Win2K system and I can confirm the issue. Shell32.dll version installed is 5.0.3700.6705. The error message shown when running the program is: The procedure entry point ILClone could not be located in the dynamic link library SHELL32.DLL

  • ShGetFileInfo called for directory oddity

    - by Axarydax
Hello, I have a simple file browser and there I display files and folders, obtained by (for directory) SHFILEINFO info = new SHFILEINFO(); SHGetFileInfo(filename, FILE_ATTRIBUTE_DIRECTORY, ref info,Marshal.SizeOf(info), SHGFI_ICON | SHGFI_USEFILEATTRIBUTES | SHGFI_SMALLICON | SHGFI_ADDOVERLAYS); It works 100% fine, but I have noticed an oddity - if I try to obtain an icon for directory, but specify FILE_ATTRIBUTE_NORMAL instead of FILE_ATTRIBUTE_DIRECTORY but it does weird stuff for directories - normal folders have "unknown file type white paper" icons, recycle bin has VLC icon, etc. Directories under SVN have proper overlay, but base file icon (white sheet of paper). I understand that base icon for directory would now be the one of unknown file, but why do some folders have totally strange icon? Config.MSI has installer icon, recycle bin has VLC icon (wtf?!), etc. What does the shell function do with this parameters? Exactly what icon does it obtain? Again, this is not a problem, I'm just curious.

  • Correct mapping for SHChangeNotify in JNA

    - by user389658
This is syntax for SHChangeNotify function from MSDN: void SHChangeNotify( LONG wEventId, UINT uFlags, __in_opt LPCVOID dwItem1, __in_opt LPCVOID dwItem2 ); I've to write its Java counterpart in Java Native Access [JNA], but this declaration seems to be wrong: public interface Shell32 extends com.sun.jna.platform.win32.Shell32 { public Shell32 INSTANCE = (Shell32) Native.loadLibrary(Shell32.class); void SHChangeNotify(long wEventId, int uFlags, Pointer dwItem1, Pointer dwItem2); } I got the following exception: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: Error looking up function 'SHChangeNotify' Any idea how to write it correctly?

  • How to diagnose a hang when creating a new folder in explorer.exe

    - by Jack Ukleja
I have been having some issues with explorer.exe hanging when I create a new folder. If I use Analyse Wait Chain in the Resource Monitor it says "One or more threads of explorer.exe are waiting to finish network I/O". When I look at the offending thread in Process Explorer it reveals nothing interesting: ntdll.dll!ZwWaitForMultipleObjects+0xa KERNELBASE.dll!GetCurrentThread+0x36 kernel32.dll!WaitForMultipleObjectsEx+0xb3 USER32.dll!PeekMessageW+0x1cd USER32.dll!MsgWaitForMultipleObjectsEx+0x2a USER32.dll!MsgWaitForMultipleObjects+0x20 SHELL32.dll!SHAppBarMessage+0x41e SHELL32.dll!DragAcceptFiles+0x2a3c SHELL32.dll!DragAcceptFiles+0x2a4f SHELL32.dll!Ordinal211+0x124 SHELL32.dll!SHChangeNotification_Unlock+0x12f4 USER32.dll!GetSystemMetrics+0x2b1 USER32.dll!IsDialogMessageW+0x19b USER32.dll!IsDialogMessageW+0x1e1 ntdll.dll!KiUserCallbackDispatcher+0x1f USER32.dll!PeekMessageW+0xba USER32.dll!PeekMessageW+0x89 SHELL32.dll!SHChangeNotification_Unlock+0xd9f SHELL32.dll!Ordinal885+0x1407 SHLWAPI.dll!SHRegGetUSValueW+0x306 kernel32.dll!BaseThreadInitThunk+0xd ntdll.dll!RtlUserThreadStart+0x21 While I was looking at the explorer.exe threads I did notice a fair few that talk about ETW (Event Tracing for Windows) so obviously explorer.exe uses tracing. So I decided to try and user TraceView.exe to try and listen in on the explorer.exe traces. The problem is TraceView requires some difficult-to-come-by stuff... either pdbs, or CTL files, and .TMF files. I tried using the explorer.pdb that comes with the Windows SDK but that did not work. I do not see explorer.exe in the "named providers". And I have no idea where to locate the ctl or .TMF files for explorer.exe. So the question is: Is there a way to view the ETW trace messages from explorer? Or shall I just not bother and go back to the age old technique of disabling every explorer extenion one-by-one in the hope its one of them. (Prefer the former as I like to get to the bottom of things!!)

    - by KasiyA
I want to add services.msc into Win+X context menu in windows 8 (x64). I know similar question is in here but it's not good with using Win+X Editor, because it doesn't add Underlined key for shortcuts that added with that and it's not good without having quickly underlined key. I want do that for maually Context menu folder is: C:\Users\User_Name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WinX And hide desktop.ini files is as bellows (in ...\WinX\group2\desktop.ini) [LocalizedFileNames] 1 - Run.lnk=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-12710 4 - Control Panel.lnk=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-4161 5 - Task Manager.lnk=@%SystemRoot%\system32\authui.dll,-12139 3 - Windows Explorer.lnk=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-22067 2 - Search.lnk=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-30517 I copied sevices.msc shortcut into above path in group2 folder and add this line 6 - Sevices.lnk=@%SystemRoot%\system32\sevices.msc,????? in desktop.ini file. • About the MSDN NOTIFYICONDATA's cbSize member

    - by KenC
Hi, I am reading the NOTIFYICONDATA documentation in MSDN. It says the NOTIFYICONDATA structure has a cbSize member should be set to the size of the structure, but NOTIFYICONDATA structure's size has different size in every Shell32.dll, so you should get the Shell32.dll version before setting cbSize. The following quotes from MSDN: If it is version 5.0 or later, initialize the cbSize member as follows. nid.cbSize = sizeof(NOTIFYICONDATA); Setting cbSize to this value enables all the version 5.0 and 6.0 enhancements. For earlier versions, the size of the pre-6.0 structure is given by the NOTIFYICONDATA_V2_SIZE constant and the pre-5.0 structure is given by the NOTIFYICONDATA_V1_SIZE constant. Initialize the cbSize member as follows. nid.cbSize = NOTIFYICONDATA_V2_SIZE; Using this value for cbSize will allow your application to use NOTIFYICONDATA with earlier Shell32.dll versions, although without the version 6.0 enhancements. I found it a bit of vague, because 'sizeof(NOTIFYICONDATA)' has different value in Win98 (using Shell32.dll version 4.x), Win2K (version 5.0) and WinXP (version 6.0). How could it 'enable all version 5.0 and 6.0 enhancements'? So I looked for the definition of NOTIFYICONDATA_V1_SIZE (source code as below), I see: NOTIFYICONDATA_V1_SIZE is for Win 2K (doesn't include 2K) NOTIFYICONDATA_V2_SIZE is for Win XP NOTIFYICONDATA_V3_SIZE is for Vista (not sure if I am right) It's completely different from what MSDN says? and none for Win2K? So, I am totaly confused right now. How should I set the cbSize member according to Shell32.dll version? Could anybody help me... Thanks in advance. //= = = = = = = = ShellAPI.h = = = = = = = = typedef struct _NOTIFYICONDATAA { DWORD cbSize; HWND hWnd; UINT uID; UINT uFlags; UINT uCallbackMessage; HICON hIcon; #if (NTDDI_VERSION < NTDDI_WIN2K) CHAR szTip[64]; #endif #if (NTDDI_VERSION >= NTDDI_WIN2K) CHAR szTip[128]; DWORD dwState; DWORD dwStateMask; CHAR szInfo[256]; union { UINT uTimeout; UINT uVersion; // used with NIM_SETVERSION, values 0, 3 and 4 } DUMMYUNIONNAME; CHAR szInfoTitle[64]; DWORD dwInfoFlags; #endif #if (NTDDI_VERSION >= NTDDI_WINXP) GUID guidItem; #endif #if (NTDDI_VERSION >= NTDDI_VISTA) HICON hBalloonIcon; #endif } NOTIFYICONDATAA, *PNOTIFYICONDATAA; typedef struct _NOTIFYICONDATAW { DWORD cbSize; HWND hWnd; UINT uID; UINT uFlags; UINT uCallbackMessage; HICON hIcon; #if (NTDDI_VERSION < NTDDI_WIN2K) WCHAR szTip[64]; #endif #if (NTDDI_VERSION >= NTDDI_WIN2K) WCHAR szTip[128]; DWORD dwState; DWORD dwStateMask; WCHAR szInfo[256]; union { UINT uTimeout; UINT uVersion; // used with NIM_SETVERSION, values 0, 3 and 4 } DUMMYUNIONNAME; WCHAR szInfoTitle[64]; DWORD dwInfoFlags; #endif #if (NTDDI_VERSION >= NTDDI_WINXP) GUID guidItem; #endif #if (NTDDI_VERSION >= NTDDI_VISTA) HICON hBalloonIcon; #endif } NOTIFYICONDATAW, *PNOTIFYICONDATAW; #define NOTIFYICONDATAA_V1_SIZE FIELD_OFFSET(NOTIFYICONDATAA, szTip[64]) #define NOTIFYICONDATAW_V1_SIZE FIELD_OFFSET(NOTIFYICONDATAW, szTip[64]) #ifdef UNICODE #define NOTIFYICONDATA_V1_SIZE NOTIFYICONDATAW_V1_SIZE #else #define NOTIFYICONDATA_V1_SIZE NOTIFYICONDATAA_V1_SIZE #endif #define NOTIFYICONDATAA_V2_SIZE FIELD_OFFSET(NOTIFYICONDATAA, guidItem) #define NOTIFYICONDATAW_V2_SIZE FIELD_OFFSET(NOTIFYICONDATAW, guidItem) #ifdef UNICODE #define NOTIFYICONDATA_V2_SIZE NOTIFYICONDATAW_V2_SIZE #else #define NOTIFYICONDATA_V2_SIZE NOTIFYICONDATAA_V2_SIZE #endif #define NOTIFYICONDATAA_V3_SIZE FIELD_OFFSET(NOTIFYICONDATAA, hBalloonIcon) #define NOTIFYICONDATAW_V3_SIZE FIELD_OFFSET(NOTIFYICONDATAW, hBalloonIcon) #ifdef UNICODE #define NOTIFYICONDATA_V3_SIZE NOTIFYICONDATAW_V3_SIZE #else #define NOTIFYICONDATA_V3_SIZE NOTIFYICONDATAA_V3_SIZE #endif (Seems like the code doesn't look good on the web site, but it from ShellAPI.h, all the same)

For earlier versions, the size of the pre-6.0 structure is given by the NOTIFYICONDATA_V2_SIZE constant and the pre-5.0 structure is given by the NOTIFYICONDATA_V1_SIZE constant. Initialize the cbSize member as follows. nid.cbSize = NOTIFYICONDATA_V2_SIZE; Using this value for cbSize will allow your application to use NOTIFYICONDATA with earlier Shell32.dll versions, although without the version 6.0 enhancements. I found it a bit of vague, because 'sizeof(NOTIFYICONDATA)' has different value in Win98 (using Shell32.dll version 4.x), Win2K (version 5.0) and WinXP (version 6.0). How could it 'enable all version 5.0 and 6.0 enhancements'? So I looked for the definition of NOTIFYICONDATA_V1_SIZE (source code as below), I see: NOTIFYICONDATA_V1_SIZE is for Win 2K (doesn't include 2K) NOTIFYICONDATA_V2_SIZE is for Win XP NOTIFYICONDATA_V3_SIZE is for Vista (not sure if I am right) It's completely different from what MSDN says? and none for Win2K? So, I am totally confused right now. How should I set the cbSize member according to Shell32.dll version? //= = = = = = = = ShellAPI.h = = = = = = = = typedef struct _NOTIFYICONDATAA { DWORD cbSize; HWND hWnd; UINT uID; UINT uFlags; UINT uCallbackMessage; HICON hIcon; #if (NTDDI_VERSION < NTDDI_WIN2K) CHAR szTip[64]; #endif #if (NTDDI_VERSION >= NTDDI_WIN2K) CHAR szTip[128]; DWORD dwState; DWORD dwStateMask; CHAR szInfo[256]; union { UINT uTimeout; UINT uVersion; // used with NIM_SETVERSION, values 0, 3 and 4 } DUMMYUNIONNAME; CHAR szInfoTitle[64]; DWORD dwInfoFlags; #endif #if (NTDDI_VERSION >= NTDDI_WINXP) GUID guidItem; #endif #if (NTDDI_VERSION >= NTDDI_VISTA) HICON hBalloonIcon; #endif } NOTIFYICONDATAA, *PNOTIFYICONDATAA; typedef struct _NOTIFYICONDATAW { DWORD cbSize; HWND hWnd; UINT uID; UINT uFlags; UINT uCallbackMessage; HICON hIcon; #if (NTDDI_VERSION < NTDDI_WIN2K) WCHAR szTip[64]; #endif #if (NTDDI_VERSION >= NTDDI_WIN2K) WCHAR szTip[128]; DWORD dwState; DWORD dwStateMask; WCHAR szInfo[256]; union { UINT uTimeout; UINT uVersion; // used with NIM_SETVERSION, values 0, 3 and 4 } DUMMYUNIONNAME; WCHAR szInfoTitle[64]; DWORD dwInfoFlags; #endif #if (NTDDI_VERSION >= NTDDI_WINXP) GUID guidItem; #endif #if (NTDDI_VERSION >= NTDDI_VISTA) HICON hBalloonIcon; #endif } NOTIFYICONDATAW, *PNOTIFYICONDATAW; #define NOTIFYICONDATAA_V1_SIZE FIELD_OFFSET(NOTIFYICONDATAA, szTip[64]) #define NOTIFYICONDATAW_V1_SIZE FIELD_OFFSET(NOTIFYICONDATAW, szTip[64]) #ifdef UNICODE #define NOTIFYICONDATA_V1_SIZE NOTIFYICONDATAW_V1_SIZE #else #define NOTIFYICONDATA_V1_SIZE NOTIFYICONDATAA_V1_SIZE #endif #define NOTIFYICONDATAA_V2_SIZE FIELD_OFFSET(NOTIFYICONDATAA, guidItem) #define NOTIFYICONDATAW_V2_SIZE FIELD_OFFSET(NOTIFYICONDATAW, guidItem) #ifdef UNICODE #define NOTIFYICONDATA_V2_SIZE NOTIFYICONDATAW_V2_SIZE #else #define NOTIFYICONDATA_V2_SIZE NOTIFYICONDATAA_V2_SIZE #endif #define NOTIFYICONDATAA_V3_SIZE FIELD_OFFSET(NOTIFYICONDATAA, hBalloonIcon) #define NOTIFYICONDATAW_V3_SIZE FIELD_OFFSET(NOTIFYICONDATAW, hBalloonIcon) #ifdef UNICODE #define NOTIFYICONDATA_V3_SIZE NOTIFYICONDATAW_V3_SIZE #else #define NOTIFYICONDATA_V3_SIZE NOTIFYICONDATAA_V3_SIZE #endif (Seems like the code doesn't look good on the web site, but it from ShellAPI.h, all the same)

This started a few days ago on a machine that has been running WIn 8.1 for over a month. I just finished a clean install of Windows 8.1 with a handful of apps like Dropbox and Office. Yet I'm still getting Windows Explorer crashes such as this: Faulting application name: Explorer.EXE, version: 6.3.9600.16408, time stamp: 0x523d251b Faulting module name: SHELL32.dll, version: 6.3.9600.16409, time stamp: 0x523fac81 Exception code: 0xc00000fd Fault offset: 0x0000000000189247 Faulting process id: 0xee8 Faulting application start time: 0x01ced2a62f6e5b2e Faulting application path: C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE Faulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\SHELL32.dll Report Id: e25c6b13-3eb4-11e3-be7a-2cd05a597b87 Faulting package full name: Faulting package-relative application ID: I assume that it is some sort of shell extension, but I don't know how to figure out which one.

  • How to Pin Any File to the Start Screen in Windows 8

    - by Taylor Gibb
By default Windows 8 only allows you to pin a few file types to the Start Screen. Read on to find out how you can change that by editing the registry. How to Pin Any File to the Start Screen in Windows 8 Press the Win + R keyboard combination to open a run box, then type notepad and press enter. When notepad opens, paste the following into the new document: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\pintostartscreen] “MUIVerb”=”@shell32.dll,-51201″ “NeverDefault”=”" “Description”=”@shell32.dll,-51202″ “MultiSelectModel”=”Single” [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\pintostartscreen\command] “DelegateExecute”=”{470C0EBD-5D73-4d58-9CED-E91E22E23282}” Then click on the File menu item and select save as… Before you go any further, change the Save as type to All Files. Then give your file a name ending in .reg and click Save. PinToStartHack.reg To use the hack, just double click on the .reg file you just created. When you are prompted about whether you want to continue, click Yes. Now you can pin any file to the Start Screen. Undo the Change If you ever wish to undo the change, press the Win + R keyboard combination and type regedit, then press enter. Then drill down into: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\ Finally delete the pintostartscreen key. That’s all there is to it. • Pinning a Java application to the Windows 7 taskbar

    - by Paul Lammertsma
Original question I use Launch4j as a wrapper for my Java application under Windows 7, which, to my understanding, in essence forks an instance of javaw.exe that in turn interprets the Java code. As a result, when attempting to pin my application to the task bar, Windows instead pins javaw.exe. Without the required command line, my application will then not run. As you can see, Windows also does not realize that Java is the host application: the application itself is described as "Java(TM) Platform SE binary". I have tried altering the registry key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\javaw.exe to add the value IsHostApp. This alters the behavior by disabling pinning of my application altogether; clearly not what I want. After reading about how Windows interprets instances of a single application (and a phenomenon discussed in this question), I became interested in embedding a Application User Model ID (AppUserModelID) into my Java application. I believe that I can resolve this by passing a unique AppUserModelID to Windows. There is a shell32 method for this, SetAppID(). (Or SetCurrentProcessExplicitAppUserModelID?) Is it possible to call it via JNI? If so, would this even resolve the issue? On a side note, I was curious if any of the APIs discussed in this article could be implemented for a Java application. Edit after implementing JNA, as Gregory Pakosz suggested I've now implemented the following in an attempt to have my application recognized as a separate instance of javaw.exe: NativeLibrary lib; try { lib = NativeLibrary.getInstance("shell32"); } catch (Error e) { Logger.out.error("Could not load Shell32 library."); return; } Object[] args = { "Vendor.MyJavaApplication" }; String functionName = "SetCurrentProcessExplicitAppUserModelID"; try { Function function = lib.getFunction(functionName); int ret = function.invokeInt(args); if (ret != 0) { Logger.out.error(function.getName() + " returned error code " + ret + "."); } } catch (UnsatisfiedLinkError e) { Logger.out.error(functionName + " was not found in " + lib.getFile().getName() + "."); // Function not supported } This appears to have no effect, but the function returns without error. Diagnosing why is something of a mystery to me. Any suggestions? Working implementation The final implementation that worked is the answer to my follow-up question concerning how to pass the AppID using JNA. I had awarded the bounty to Gregory Pakosz' brilliant answer for JNI that set me on the right track.

  • Function for getting localized path?

    - by MartinStettner
Windows 7 (and probably Windows Vista) display localized folder names using the LocalizedResourceName entry in the desktop.ini file. For my Documents folder, this looks like [.ShellClassInfo] LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21770 IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-112 IconFile=%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll IconIndex=-235 (see this question) This way the explorer displays the path "C:\Users\Username\Documents" as "C:\Benutzer\Username\Dokumente" on a german Windows. I wonder, if there's any build-in shell function to automatically get this localized name or, even better, transform a whole path into its localized form (best would be anything in .NET)? This is even more interesting as the LocalizedResourceName entry is only documented for Windows CE (see here). Thanks Martin

  • Python not Working in Vim

    - by jdg
I have a new install of VIM from the automatic windows installer: gvim73_46.exe I have Python 2.7 (32 bit) installed. If I open gvim, and type: :set python? I get E518: Unknown option. If I try typing: :python 'hello' Vim crashes. What could be wrong? Here are the contents of :version in case they are helpful, although python is installed, and it is using Python 2.7. I also checked, and C:\Windows\System32\python27.dll is where it should be... I am really lost here. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is going wrong? • Win7 - Opening "Programs and Features" as Admin from command line (logged in as regular user)

    - by user1741264
We have Win7 machines on a domain that we'd like to open the "Programs and Features" control applet via the command line while a regular user is logged in. Heres the catch: I know how to do this using runas from command line BUT after "Programs and Features" opens, I dont truly have the ability to remove a program. I am told that I need to be an Admin to do so. Here are the commands I have tried: runas /user:%computername%\administrator cmd.exe then in the new cmd window running: control appwiz.cpl runas /user:%companydomain%\%domainadminacct% cmd.exe then in the new cmd window running: control appwiz.cpl runas /user:%computername%\administrator cmd.exe then in the new cmd window running: rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL appwiz.cpl runas /user:%companydomain%\%domainadminacct% cmd.exe then in the new cmd window running: rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL appwiz.cpl I have also tried all of the above as one long line of code instead of launching a cmd.exe as Admin As you can see, I have tried running the command using both a local admin account (Administrator) AND a domain admin account. I have alos tried launching the runas command as one long command (opening the "programs and features") AND 1st launching a cmd.exe with admin rights and THEN launching the "Prgrams and Features" window. The result is the same: The "Programs and Features" windows opens but when I try to perform an uninstall, I am told I need Admin rights. Thus I am lead to believe that this instance of "Programs and Features" is not truly being run as an admin I am trying to avoid logging the regular user out. I am also aware that every program has its own uninstaller, I do not want to uninstall that way. I want to use the uninstaller in "Programs and Features". Any help is appreciated.

  • Why does RunDLL32 process exit early on Windows 7?

    - by Vicky
On Windows XP and Vista, I can run this code: STARTUPINFO si; PROCESS_INFORMATION pi; BOOL bResult = FALSE; ZeroMemory(&pi, sizeof(pi)); ZeroMemory(&si, sizeof(si)); si.cb = sizeof(STARTUPINFO); si.dwFlags = STARTF_USESHOWWINDOW; si.wShowWindow = SW_SHOW; bResult = CreateProcess(NULL, "rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL modem.cpl", NULL, NULL, FALSE, NORMAL_PRIORITY_CLASS, NULL, NULL, &si, &pi); if (bResult) { WaitForSingleObject(pi.hProcess, INFINITE); CloseHandle(pi.hProcess); CloseHandle(pi.hThread); } and it operates as I would expect, i.e. the WaitForSingleObject does not return until the Modem Control Panel window has been closed by the user. On Windows 7, the same code, WaitForSingleObject returns straight away (with a return code of 0 indicating that the object signalled the requested state). Similarly, if I take it to the command line, on XP and Vista I can run start /wait rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL modem.cpl and it does not return control to the command prompt until the Control Panel window is closed, but on Windows 7 it returns immediately. Is this a change in RunDll32? I know MS made some changes to RunDll32 in Windows 7 for UAC, and it looks from these experiments as though one of those changes might have involved spawning an additional process to display the window, and allowing the originating process to exit. The only thing that makes me think this might not be the case is that using a process explorer that shows the creation and destruction of processes, I do not see anything additional being created beyond the called rundll32 process itself. Any other way I can solve this? I just don't want the function to return until the control panel window is closed.

  • Linking problems using libcurl with Visual C++ 2005: "unresolved external symbol __imp__curl_easy_se

    - by user88595
Hi, I am planning to use libcurl in my project. I had downloaded the library source, built and integrated it in a small POC application. I am able to build and run the application without any issues with the generated libcurl.dll and libcurl_imp.lib files. Now when I integrate the same library in my project I am getting linker errors. 6foo.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _imp_curl_easy_setopt 6foo.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _imp_curl_easy_perform 6foo.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _imp_curl_easy_cleanup 6foo.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _imp_curl_global_init 6foo.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _imp_curl_easy_init I have researched and tried all manners of workarounds like adding CURL_STATICLIB definitions , additional libraries , changing to /MT even copying the libs to the release directory but nothing seems to work. As far as I can see the only difference between approach #1 and #2 in my steps are #1 is an console application using the libcurl.dll while in my main project this is another dll which is trying to link to libcurl.dll.. Would that necessitate any change in approach? Can I use the same generated multi threaded DLL /MD file for both(Tried /MT also with no success)? Any other ideas? • How can I read kindle book under xfce(ubuntu)? (using chromebook)(wine not working)

    - by yshn
I'm using chromebook, dual booting xfce(ubuntu) and cr os. The ebook I bought on amazon is not supported on kindle cloud reader. (Under xfce)I downloaded wine and tried installing kindle for pc under wine, and after couples of times of trials, it always said installation error and could not install kindle, and it's been giving me: Unhandled exception: unimplemented function msvcp90.dll.??0?$basic_ofstream@DU?$char_traits@D@std@@@std@@QAE@XZ called in 32-bit code (0x7b839cf2).
