  • Rosetta Stone Network V3 doesn't recognize built-in microphone in OSX Lion

    I am using Rosetta Stone Network V3 on an early 2011 MacBook Pro running OSX Lion 10.7.3. When I log in, select a language and level, and then a lesson, I am prompted to select a microphone. The built in microphone doesn't show up, yet I've used it multiple times for other applications. I heard from another user that it doesn't work if headphones with a built-in microphone are used. I have not yet tried a USB microphone. Is there some free work around to this? I would prefer to not have to buy a USB microphone, but if that is the only solution, then I'll live. Edit: I noticed that Rosetta Stone tells me that if I don't have a microphone I should disable speech to move on, but that option is grayed out for me.

All rights reserved MatheMagic – Guess My Age – Method 1 The Mathemagician stands on the stage and asks an adult to do the following: ·         Do the next few steps on your calculator, or the calculator in your phone, or even on a piece of paper. ·         Do it silently! Don’t tell me the results until I ask for them directly ·         Compute a single digit multiple of 9 – any one of 9, 18, 27, … all the way to 81, will do. ·         Now multiply your age by 10 ·         Subtract the 9 multiple from this number. ·         Tell me the result. Notice that I don’t know which multiple of 9 you subtracted from 10 times your age. I will nonetheless immediately tell you what your age is. How do I do this? Let’s do the algebra. 10X – 9Y = 10X – 10Y + Y = 10(X – Y) + Y Now remember, you asked an adult, so his/her age is a two digit number (maybe even 3 digits), thus reducing it by the single digit multiplied by nine is still positive – the lowest is can be is 100 – 81 which yields 19. Now make two numbers out of the result. The last digit and the number before it. This number is X – Y or the age minus the single digit you selected. The last digit is this very single digit. This is always so regardless of the digit you selected. So… Add tis digit to the other number and you get back the age! Q.E.D Example: I am 76 years old and here is what happens when I do the steps 76 x 10 = 760 760 – 18 = 742 made of 74 and 2. My age is 74 + 2 760 – 81 = 679 made of 67 and 9. My age is 67 + 9 A note to the socially aware mathemagician – it is safer to do it with a man. The chances of a veracious answer are much, much higher! The trick may be accomplished on any 2 or 3 digit number, not just one’s age, but if you want to know your date’s age, it’s a good way to elicit it.   • HTTP Headers: Max-Age vs Expires – Which One To Choose?

    Caching of static content like images, scripts, styles on the client browser reduces load on the webservers and also improves end users browsing experience by loading web pages quickly. We can use HTTP headers Expires or Cache-Control:max-age to cache content on client browser and set expiry time for them. Expire header is HTTP/1.0 standard and Cache-Control:max-age is introduced in HTTP/1.1 specification to solve the issues and limitation with Expire  header. Consider the following headers.   Cache-Control: max-age=24560 Expires: Tue, 15 May 2012 06:17:00 GMT The first header instructs web browsers to cache the content for 24560 seconds relative to the time the content is downloaded and expire it after the time period elapses. The second header instructs web browser to expiry the content after 15th May 2011 06:17. Out of these two options which one to use – max-age or expires? I prefer max-age header for the following reasons As max-age  is a relative value and in most of the cases it makes sense to set relative expiry date rather than an absolute expiry date. Expire  header values are complex to set – time format should be proper, time zones should be appropriate. Even a small mistake in settings these values results in unexpected behaviour. As Expire header values are absolute, we need to  keep changing them at regular intervals. Lets say if we set 2011 June 1 as expiry date to all the image files of this blog, on 2011 June 2 we should modify the expiry date to something like 2012 Jan 1. This add burden of managing the Expire headers. What do you like best about performing in front of a live audience?A. I love to bring the music to the people! It's all fun and games in the studio, and I love it, but the time comes when the world needs to hear it and it's nice to see their faces when they are hearing new songs. Q. Do you prefer smaller, intimate venues or larger, louder ones?  Why?A. I like the smaller ones sometimes, but it really depends on who is in the audience. I prefer it regardless of size when the audience is with you from the start and they dance and let the music take them over - as it does me when I'm on stage. Q. What about your fans surprises you?A. Not a lot really, they have always been very very sweet and polite and giving and loving. It doesn't surprise me because that's what the effect of music is. For the most part they are beautiful people. The Last digit is obviously 5, the other 2 (or 3 for a centenarian) and this number is the age + 3.     In your opinion, what is a great example application which demonstrates the best techniques for its language and problem domain, and could be used as a reference for other programmers? Please provide answers where the source is readily available for viewing (i.e. open-source projects), and provide a link.   • Age verification forms and crawlers

    I have created a website about some beer brand and had to include age verification page. The verification script is written in PHP and uses sessions to store verification variable. The script works the way that no matter form which link you will try to enter the website it will take you to the verification page first. The verification is very simple. There are 2 button: "I'm under 21" and "I'm over 21". If you click the latter, you can browse the website. After some time I discovered that the web crawlers are not able to get past verification page. I checked the website in Google webmaster tools and the only text content scanned was from the verification page. I read somewhere that crawlers are not able to submit form buttons, is it true? Considering the fact that age verification pages are useless anyways, maybe I should just leave it as a starting page but don't forbid going around it, e.g. from links to the subpages?

    In need to find the age in days - months - years in OpenOffice. There is DATEDIF() in Microsoft Excel. You can use it to find the difference in days/months/years between two dates. Age Calculation You can calculate a persons age based on their birthday and todays date. The calculation uses the DATEDIF() function. The DATEDIF() is not documented in Excel 5, 7 or 97, but it is in 2000. (Makes you wonder what else Microsoft forgot to tell us!) Birth date : 01-Jan-60 Years lived : 52 =DATEDIF(C8,TODAY(),"y") and the months : 4 =DATEDIF(C8,TODAY(),"ym") and the days : 30 =DATEDIF(C8,TODAY(),"md") One can calculate by below formula, but it is cumbersome to calculate months. Another way to calculate age This method gives you an age which may potentially have decimal places representing the months. If the age is 20.5, the .5 represents 6 months. Birth date : 01-Jan-60 Age is : 52.41 =(TODAY()-C23)/365.25

  • 2 Birds, 1 Stone: Enabling M2M and Mobility in Healthcare

    Jim Connors has created a video showcase of a comprehensive healthcare solution, connecting a mobile application directly to an embedded patient monitoring system. In the demo, Jim illustrates how you can easily build solutions on top of the Java embedded platform, using Oracle products like Berkeley DB and Database Mobile Server. Jim is running Apache Tomcat on an embedded device, using Berkeley DB as the data store. BDB is transparently linked to an Oracle Database backend using  Database Mobile Server. Information protection is important in healthcare, so it is worth pointing out that these products offer strong data encryption, for storage as well as transit. In his video, Jim does a great job of demystifying M2M. What's compelling about this demo is that uses a solution architecture that enterprise developers are already comfortable and familiar with: a Java apps server with a database backend. The additional pieces used to embed this solution are Oracle Berkeley DB and Database Mobile Server. It functions transparently, from the perspective of Java apps developers. This means that organizations who understand Java apps (basically everyone) can use this technology to develop embedded M2M products. The potential uses for this technology in healthcare alone are immense; any device that measures and records some aspect of the patient could be linked, securely and directly, to the medical records database. Breathing, circulation, other vitals, sensory perception, blood tests, x-rats or CAT scans. The list goes on and on. In this demo case, it's a testament to the power of the Java embedded platform that they are able to easily interface the device, called a Pulse Oximeter, with the web application. If Jim had stopped there, it would've been a cool demo. But he didn't; he actually saved the most awesome part for the end! At 9:52 Jim drops a bombshell: He's also created an Android app, something a doctor would use to view patient health data from his mobile device. The mobile app is seamlessly integrated into the rest of the system, using the device agent from Oracle's Database Mobile Server. In doing so, Jim has really showcased the full power of this solution: the ability to build M2M solutions that integrate seamlessly with mobile applications. In closing, I want to point out that this is not a hypothetical demo using beta or even v1.0 products. Everything in Jim's demo is available today. What's more, every product shown is mature, and already in production at many customer sites, albeit not in the innovative combination Jim has come up with. If your customers are in the market for these type of solutions (and they almost certainly are) I encourage you to download the components and try it out yourself!   • Offline apt-get update to age of cache

    I have a script to quickly upgrade a Live or fresh system from cached files on a flash drive. In essence, it looks like this: # *Code to remove and symlink /var/cache/apt/ if currently empty of packages.* sudo apt-get dist-upgrade # Quick offline cached upgrade; not limited by slow WANs. echo $'\nMake sure Internet is reachable and press enter for complete online upgrade.'; read sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade # Complete online upgrade. The problem is that the ‘cached upgrade’ seems to ignore the cached pkgcache.bin and srcpkgcache.bin which is where I assume apt-get update stores its changes, so the upgrade completes as if the system is up-to-date. Useless. So in that case, I need some code to apt-get update to the age of the package cache on my flash drive. This code would be placed between the 1st and 2nd lines of the code above.
